Cybercafe Project Update

Dear Terence

As you know a few of us has been keen on the cybercafe project initiated by Ronald. I spoke several times with Ronald on the subject; and also with the other members who have posted on his thread. Although we have gone down individually to the location suggested by Ronald, some of us have yet to meet one another. We intend to take this opportunity to meet at tonight’s Silverhairs meeting.

To the best of my knowledge, this project is purely a Silverhairs members voluntary initiative and cooperative effort. There are no corporate sponsors at this stage. No one is trying to sell anything to anyone. This is a good thing.

It may also be a good opportunity for us to present and share some of the findings and ideas to interested members. Many members  may be interested in the business plan but have yet to come forward. Perphaps we can do it towards the end of the meeting when all other scheduled matters have been dispensed with. All those interested can stay back if they want to. Will this be OK?

It seems that Silverhairs lack a convenient and central location for their gatherings and activities. Getting the logistics together for a meeting eg the ecommerce training is a case-in-point. So a member’s initiative for a cybercafe (or to use its updated 3rd generation concept of a chill café) may be just the de-facto clubhouse that is required for Silverhairs to grow to the next stage.

  1. Hi Kong Thean,

I have always like suggestions for business projects, including this one on a cybercafe. There may be some among SilverHairs who would like to take this cybercafe idea with you. Please lead on.

As for a permanent place for SilverHairsClub monthly gathering, I am always on the lookout. But I have to admit I have not been successful. Our members come from all corners of Singapore, and from the comments I received from SilverHairs, there is always a request to rotate the location from Changi to Pasir Ris, Jurong, Sembawang, Toa Payoh and Hougang. I dont disagree with a permanent place, but for the moment, I think we should enjoy the different parts of Singapore. Each new place may bring us different members participation. Let’s take another year to solidify the idea. I am flexible.

Other SilverHairs are welcome to chew on this idea. Afterall, this club is for all of us.

  2. Have SHC join existing Spore clubs as a social affiliate program. No need to build from scratch. If you want to value add the relationship you can consider a physical location in, say, Bangkok where it is cheaper to set up. Does the Spore club there have a location where you can bridge affiliate? The other Spore club can then use its facilities as their affiliate quid-a-pro.

One example that you can consider is the SAF Yatch club. It has three affiliates all including the Changi club where you are holding games. Great ambience and not crowded during weekdays. Free carpark but no MRT only bus.

If you have a social only (without yatching discounts) you may get the price down. If we need the sea sports we can renegotiate on a one-to-one basis.

  3. There is a lot of desires and requests to have a physical location to hold gatherings and for members to meet one another. There are obvious benefits.

However, I am not sure i can do so; but I would welcome any member who can take the lead to bring forward the reality of having a physical location.

I think it is an excellent idea, and if you put forward a proposal, I would be pleased to support the proposal, if we can get reasonable member response.

  4. Perphaps we can raise this at the end of the Blue Helmet meeting on Thurs? Let see if the initiative to find a regular meeting place can take off.

My own approach is to join as a purely social group affiliate to an existing club, F&B group or organisation like an education institution. Group buy-in will give us a good deal. SHC membership can also grow with such a union as the organisations cross feed each other.

The important thing is that we have adequate facilties that we can use to turn out a decent chatroom, seminar or function as the need arises. The MPH place is simply too small. They don’t have any facilities nor even the space to host if we bring our own in.

Members can also think of the possibilities.
