Thur Jul 14, 2011 Monthly Gathering at Riverside

"The aim of the monthly gathering is to enable social networking among SHCians, for new and old SilverHairs to meet one another." – Terence Seah

Hi, Members!

For our July gathering, let’s come away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown city area and meet outdoors at the Sengkang Riverside Park to play kampung games, and fly kite.  Mushroom Cafe in the Park has no walls; it opens out to the rolling landscaped greenery by the Punggol River.

Many of you enjoyed "March 2011 Walk – Sengkang Riverside PCN" on March 12 this year.  Freda Lim liked its "country-like scenery"! If you can, do come early to take in a brief walk among the trails, and the panoramic view from the hillock.

On the agenda is "kampung games" like gasing, chapteh, hopscotch, five stones, marbles, red seeds, skipping rope, paper ball, hantam bola, fighting spiders, kite-flying, etc.  Many of you remembered these games that we used to play in the old days (Read Rosalind Lee’s post "Reminiscenses of the good old days" Feb 10, 2010).  If you have these games or other games, do bring along and we’ll have fun replaying them.

If you wish, can stay after 9.30 pm for line-dancing.  Some of the popular pieces: Electric Slide, Chilli ChaCha, Come Dance With Me, Cowboy Motion, Honky Tonk Stomp, Stroll Along ChaCha.

  • Date : Thursday, July 14, 2011
  • Time : 5 pm – 9.30 pm
  • Place : Mushroom Cafe in the Park, Sengkang Riverside Park, Anchorvale Street

How to get there by LRT : Arrive at Sengkang MRT. Ride the LRT to Farmway Station (2 stops from Sengkang MRT).  Walk 5 mins towards Punggol River. Cross the bridge and walk towards the Cafe with the ‘big red mushroom’ signboard.  There is no bus service along Anchorvale Street.

Bicycle – accessible from Hougang (via PCN), Rivervale, Compassvale, Anchorvale, Fernvale

Program :

  1. Registration and Introduction of SHC members and new members
  2. Fellowship and interaction
  3. Kampung games  (Bring picnic mats/foldable chairs)
  4. Kite flying  (I hope there’s a good wind on that day)
  5. Line-dancing after 9.30 pm (Bring your preferred music/player)
  6. Discussion – next monthly gathering
  7. Any other matters

Please note this gathering is for members only.   If your friends wish to join in, they are welcome to first sign up as members.  Also, do have on your nametag when you arrive; this will greatly facilitate introduction. Its okay if you don’t have one – a sticky label will be made for you.  Thank you all for your cooperation.

July 14 is the night before full moon.  Come meet up at Riverside!  See you there!    emoticon

My staff do the run but I have to verify and reconciled them before emailing to my clents.

  13. I would love to join in as well, probably will make my own way from AMK. I have lots of saga seeds at home, will bring some of that or most probably will make a set of 5 stones….anyone want to play 5 stones?

  14. Hi Yatsing,

I am only a beginner and learning the basics only, so cannot play yet. Perhaps Gabriella can get her kakis to come?

    Alan Tham

  15. Hi Eunice,
:-) if you are unable to join us on July 14, it’s ok; important that you must take care of your business first. No worry, we’ll catch up with you another time! Cheers! :-)

  16. Hi Yatsing
    I’m going. Please register me.
I will bring 2 decks of cards and teach my ‘Golf Card Game’, if anyone is interested to learn.

  17. Hi Feztus,
Re: walk walk. If you can, do arrive early to enjoy a leisurely stroll along the breezy gently-sloping trails criss-crossing that corner of Riverside Park. Clusters of pandan plants give off their unmistakable aroma along the way – you will like it. :-)

  18. Hi Lilian,

Yes i can give you a lift, shall we go early as Yat Sing about the pandan plants giving the aroma .. would love to go for an early stroll.

  20. thanks YS for the option of sensual therapy, but i will be coming after a 2 hours of badminton game so won’t be able to come early.
so what contest is that? do we use mouth, hands or eyes? my legs are too tired, any other sensual therapy without using legs is fine with me

  21. Hi Alan T.

You are a ukulele beginner (I’m not at all) AND an inspiration to us to learn a new skill. Hope you will soon gather a circle of ukulele enthusiasts.

Catch up with you some time!

  22. Hi Yatsing

Wah sounds interesting July Monthly Gathering but too bad I cannot join the fun cos I have to attend colleague’s farewell dinner. Aiyo I like all the games lah especially chapteh, hopscotch, tikam2, red seed etc. Why no one propose play “five stone” which also a fun game to play too hee.. just suggesting.

To those going have fun ok?

    Cheers
    Hamidah

  23. Aslamak? Hamidah, the ganes proposed are already so tame so feminine and you’re proposing another. Might as well add throwing of the betrothal ball.

If there’s a William Tell game, I tell you I am game and will definitely go. And then you must, so I wont miss the target.

  24. Hi Yat Sing

Riverside, mushroom cafe, greenery, almost full moon…seems such a perfect setting. Joy and I are coming.

Come on guys, we are drowned in a sea of pink. Quick sign up.

    Dan

  25. Hi Yat sing,

I think Dan is correct, all those guys who are going to be drowned .. Pink Sea..heehee

  27. Hi to you all SHC “action!” members meeting at Riverside,

I am happy to report that I found chapteh and marbles at the neighborhood shop, and will bring these. Some of these games from yesteryear are harder to find, e.g. gasing, paper puffball. If you have any “games that we used to play in the old days”, do bring along.
I hope we’ll have something for everyone to do at this monthly gathering. It’s nice too, to just sit and chat.

Looking forward to an enjoyable evening with everyone!

  28. Hi Yatsing

No worry, I will bring the paper puffballs.

Anyone know where to buy those little tubes of guey stuff that you can blow into bubble-like balls with tiny little straws? Anyone know what I’m talking about?? I love to play with those.

    Karen

  31. Ya lah Ah Huat

  47. Hi Yatsing

Thanks for organising the interesting gathering. I nearly gave up looking for the place, especially when I have to cross the big river.

Thank goodness Lily, Lina and Hou Chong came to my rescue and I am glad I made it. Had a great time meeting up with old friends and got to know some new ones. My mee rebus was tasty :)

    Have a great weekend everyone.

    Cheers
    Carly

  48. Yatsing
I have to confess before I met you, I wasn’t sure if ‘Yatsing’ was a man or woman. We were kidding in the car about the ‘sing’ being a ‘singh’, hee.
You turned out to be such a sweet and pretty lady. :-)
On hindsight, I think I met you once before, but just couldn’t place the name and face together. This is a sign of aging….
Thank you for organising this get together. It was indeed fun to catch up with some old friends and meet new ones.
    Cheers.

  49. Good Afternoon Yatsing

Thank you for getting us together yesterday at the Mushroom Cafe in the Park, think I call it Quaint corner of Sengkang. Quiet place to eat now that seletar camp are no longer an attractive place to go. Bdw, I enjoyed the 2 mins skipping exercise.

    Cheers
    freda

  50. Hi everyone!

I am glad that so many of you turned up at Riverside. You were all wonderful company and good sport to join in line- dancing, chapteh, skipping rope, etc games. We didn’t get to play balut, or Golf Card game, and others – KIV next time!

Thank you all for your contribution to an enjoyable monthly gathering :-)

P.S. Thank you to all car drivers who offered rides to and from this ‘ulu’ corner of Sengkang.

  51. Hi Peggy Tan,

A big warm Welcome to SHC!

We look forward to meeting up with you at our next monthly gathering. Do look out for the post.
But why wait for that one? :-) Come and join us at Kovan TGIF on Jul 22, Live to Eat on Jul 23, Tea Dance on Jul 31, Bowling on Jul 31.

    See you soon!

  52. Yatsing, there’s 1 more activity in July 2011 which you omitted. It’s on Sunday the 23rd at EZ4U where the greatest crooner of all times sings.

Probably bcos it’s a sell-out long b4 the date, you didnt mention it.

And of cos, those lucky enough to have signed up will not only get to be serenaded by the best but for $12 will get to eat mineral puffs washed down with curry water. It’s not kovan; it’s heaven.
