Silverhair got money

I just watched an interesting programme on TV about the business of providing for silverhair age group. Countries like Malaysia, Thailand and China are developing retirement homes and all of them are looking forward to good business.

Actually, we the people over 45 years old, hold the largest disposalble income in the world. From corporate chiefs to the retired, we actually are in control of more money than the younger ones.  And yet the marketing people only consider markets for children, teenagers and young adults, and when it comes to older people they only offer us retirement homes. Even when we discuss the subject here in this site, we thing about retirement home for ourselves. How about the time we have to spend before we need retirement homes. There are still a lot of life left before we sit on the wheelchair and wait for death.

We are still physically active even if we cannot exert ourselves as vigorously as the young. But there are many things we can do and should do instead of lying down preparing for death. The industry should provide for us but this can only happen if we demand it. They will listen because we control most of the money.

I think one of the problem is that most of the time, we tend to think in terms of the future. That is why we are preoccupied with retirement homes and eldercare. How about fashions that can make us look good now as we are…not younger. Entertainment places more suited to our taste. Golf games with fewer holes. Lighter footballs played on smaller fields. etc

OK you guys think of more and maybe start a business to earn some money from the rest of us. I am sleepy now……..maybe a special bed for our age with old partners?

  1. Hi Tian Soo,

Before we grow old, I have always thought we will have all kinds of walking ailments. so, I buy different kinds of walking sticks. Then, I think of how I can have embedded inside the stick, a GPS, a radio, a mobile, a flag, a whistle and a compartment for a map to my home.

Couldnt agree with you more. You are another thinker out of the box.

  2. I think the prostitutes in Batam are much better business people than our businessman with multiple awards. The prostitutes have seen the need for their service to Singaporean men who had just got their money from CPF and they zoom in on them.

They also think outside the box and they don’t even need to get out of their bed.

  3. Tian Soo, Tian Soo…

You are so, so knotty: all tied up!

What happened to your bevy of Mongolian girls?

Yes, we got quite a bit of time before we really qualify for an old-age home, sorry, “retirement” home.

Ok, what about guided tours to Batam? We can get good business ideas and tips there, it seems.

  4. Eyeing the Silver/Golden Pie (since Silverhair got money)

    Business ideas:
    1. Start a mahjong ‘den’ for 55 – year olds and above. For three hrs, participants pay $10 – $12 each. Free flow of water/ Chinese tea. Anyone keen to brainstorm this idea? ………..lol! just joking.

    2. Healthy home-cooked set lunch at cook’s home. $10 – $15 for 3 dishes,1 soup and rice, followed by tea/coffee for group of 4-6. One and a half hour makan time. Can advertise on online flea mart…….lol!

    cheers,

You go to Batam and recruit the prostitutes because you speak Bahasa Indonesia better than me. I follow Ah Nee to CPF talk and look out for old men about to retire. We can have a matchmaking business before Terence starts his. You get commission from the prostitutes and I earn commission from the dirty old men. Don’t bother about what people call us..we will be rich. How about it?

Forget about my Mongolian girls. They came and return last April Fools Day. Anyway there are many rich customers in China now, so they don’t need to come to Singapore.

Seriously, I think your 2 ideas are worth careful consideration. But I am not a good businessman, so shall leave it to the more capable.

  6. I don’t know if “Silverhairs got money” but I certainly have difficulty counting money .
“Jack” a SHC member told me that 3 of his friends wanted 20 tubs of kumquat marmalade each. I duly handed 60 tubs to him and asked him to collect $300 for me, being $5/tub. When he returned with the proceeds, I handed $50 to him for his trouble. “Jack” being a nice guy, decided to keep only $20 for himself and return $10 to each of the 3 buyers saying that there is a 10% discount.
Now I am puzzled. There was $300 in my hands initially. With the discount, the 3 buyers paid in total $270 [ie 3 X $90 (ie $100-10)]. “Jack” kept $20. Where is the $10?.

  7. Hehehe!

    My dear Tian Soo

You are mistaken… Bahasa Indonesia is quite different from Baba Malay. I may get no further than showing your CPF statement to the pros of Batam.

Anyway, I think you can do better with the Mongolian beauties; they are certainly more attractive to Ah Peks and Uncles and they can communicate better.

Meanwhile, extend your search to the private hospitals too; old men about to expire are better candidates than those about to retire.

If you start producing your Magic ‘tongkat’ please also include, an alarm to remind us to eat and pee, an alarm to take medication. Some family pictures to remind us who we are and some xxxx pictures to keep us awake. A pre-recorded announcement to say who we are and where we live.

The technology is already available. You need an OEM producer and marketing. I can help you to collect money.

  9. Hi Hou Chong#6

“Jack” returned $30; tat means net payment $270. You collected $250 net. The difference (270-250) is $20 which went to “Jack”.

  10. Hi Hou Chong #6

You first mentioned the total price is $300 (3 x 100), then after the 10% discount, a total $270 (3 x 90)is paid by the three clienteles. With the $20 took by Jack, there is totally $290, where is the other $10 (300 – 90) going? Will it be dropped to the floor without anyone noticed.

The trick in this question is the $300, which can only be used for calculation when everyone pay $100. But when everyone pay $90, the $300 can only be used to calculate the money you received. The formulas are as follows:

    Money paid by the 3 is 3 x 90 = 270
    Money received by you is 300 – 50 = 250
Money received by Jack = 20
    Money received by you and Jack = 250 + 20 = 270 = money paid.

No money can be picked from the floor.

  11. Hi Janie#9 and Andrew#10,
Both of you are correct of course. As you have each cleverly deduced, there is no $10. Thanks for yr answers. It is frightening how the tongue can mislead the mind simply by systematically leading an illogical argument.
While on this subject, I wld like to urge all of you to check the automated deductions made to your prepaid cards by those electronic readers. Last week, I happened to be looking at my car IU when a blatant over-deduction of $12 for parking fee was made as I exit the c/park. Wonder how often this has been happening.
Silverhair got wisedom and money is better.

Its time of the year again, wishing everyone a very blessed Christmas and to those who also wish for a special bed with old partners, here is a song by Julio Iglesias http://youtu.be/tOifaUXPk4g:
