Y2012 1st Cycling Activity – 18 Feb 2012

Hi Cycling Friends

We are going to commence our first cycling activity on Feb 18 for a start for Y2012.  This time, we are going to cycle from ECP to Marina Barrage.   Marina Barrage is considered Singapore’s latest downtown icon, built across the mouth of the Marina Channel. The Marina Barrage is the first reservoir in the heart of the city, 15th in Singapore.  I understand the scenery is also very fantastic..    emoticon

This activity will be lead by Douglas – a very experienced, careful and caring cyclist.  So, come along and join the fun.

  • As usual, we meet @ 4pm : ECP Marina Cove MacDonald (inside)
  • Proceed to bicycle rental kiosk and start cycling at 4.30pm as advised by Douglas.

If you are going to join us, kindly register in the comments section here.

  1. Hi Douglas,

I think most SHC people are going for the charity event, hence the poor response. Nevertheless, if it is till on, I shall be there as I am not going to the charity event.

Hope more will turn up as I think this is a very good route too. Where will dinner be? Any good place?

    Cheers

  2. Alamak, Janie,

You are 1 tough lady. This ride won’t be tough, chicken feet for you. I think it is shorter than the CV route.

    Right or not, Doug?

  3. Douglas,

Sorry lah cannot support you for this first cycling event of the year, leaving for Cambodia on same day.
Will join next cycling event ok.

Charles, yes this is a very interesting route to Marina Barrage, the view is fantastic, remember to bring camera.

    ET

  4. The Charity Event is in the morning which ends at 2pm. After clearing and cleaning up, the most is 3pm.

Our cycling meets at 4pm and start cycling at 4.30pm. There is enough time to do both. In fact, those going from the Charity Event can hitch a ride from those going directly from the event to cycling.

  5. Hi Charles @ #2 & #4
Thanks for your strong support, as we have to return the rented bikes near Marina Cove, dinner would most likely be around that place.

The ride to Marina Barrage is shorter than to Changi Village. It would not be a problem for Janie

    Hi ET @#5
Enjoy your Kampuchea trip, there is always another time.
Don’t forget out ride to Labrador Park and into Sentosa this Saturday.

    Hi AhNee @8
Toss a coin, if head – don’t attend your MAS family day :)

    cheers

  6. Hi Anna
Welcome, what a unique way in announcing.

    Hi BL
Had not seen you in cycling attires for a long time.
I missed those night cycling with you.

  7. Hello Douglas #9

No need to toss a coin, I will rush to East Coast after my event. Just don’t want to miss this new cycling route to Marina Barrage. Thank you for organising.

    Ah Nee

  8. Hi Ivan #19
    Noted

    Hi Bobby #20
    welcome, see you

Bike rental is about $8-10 for 2hrs.
The normal bike shop has closed for good, we will walk to the bike shop nearer to Burger King.

    cheers

  9. Reporting from ECP. New rental kiosk near McDonald in direction of Fort Rd. Bike rental $6 for 2 hrs and $9 for 3 hrs. We are cycling to the barrage today. Therefore we need to rent bike for 3 hrs. Four of us came straight from the charity event now waiting in McDonald. See you soon.

  10. Hi All,
Today, 14 of us had completed our 2hours cycling from ECP to Marina Barrage – is’t this a great achievement… hahaha…

Actually, today, I had a very super bike except dat it shd not be cycled by me.. novice mah… But heng ah, Bira upon seeing me struggling and had offered to change hers with mine.. if not, I really wonder how m I going 2 cycle to MB and back 2 ECP. Thanks… Bira..

Abit of hicups here n there but overall was a fun outing followed by BBQ/steamboat buffet for fellowship…

Looking forward for the next cycling date… Cheers.. Dolly

  11. Right On, Buddy!

We had a wonderful time exploring a new route, and such pictureques sceneries! Though the route was long, it was a breeze on bike. A big THANK YOU to Douglas!

Also, the group suddenly grew in size with the last minute sign-ups and gate-crashers – Ivan, Bobby, Bira, Peggy & Audrey.

Looking forward to the pictures too! Because a few of us came from helping at the charity event, the red t-shirts we had on will brighten up the pictures with an over cast sky. It was definitely much cooler after the rain. LOL when new comer Julian asked whether red was the dress code for cycling……hehe.

Thanks also to Lina, Hou Chong and Lydia Soh for dropping by to say hello at our dinning tables.

  12. Dolly…

This new route take longer time to complete, hence got to start on time. Not so nice to made all the cyclists wait for me mah. I definitely missed the FUN! Oh yeh…. the BBQ steamboat too.

    Cheers.. Dolly

  14. Dolly,

Yes correct, with yesterday’s ride u burned 100 Cal, but definitely added much more than 200 Cal, maybe 400-600Cal on average.
Those who binged yesterday, easily more than 700Cal.

Just for reference: McDonald’s Hamburger 270Cal, Cheese Burger 320Cal, Big Mac 570 Cal
And a can of coke already 140Cal……Hahaha…

  15. Hi Peggy#29
Had clicked on the link above…
Hey!! Pretty cool bike and 20″ wheeler some more…looks good.
    MMMmmmmmm…..should I get one too?
Had google to see what’s the price like..
    Wow! Pds600++ very ex leh!
Let’s see how’s the income 1st by June this year…sigh….sigh.

p/s: Aiyah!! about the calories….alamak!! dun count into it too much leh….cos u taking away the excitement of eating!!

  16. Hi ALL,

Thanks for all the funs and showing me that we have indeed quite a beautiful “backyard”. Would like to be back there again with my cam.

Hi Peggy that’s a pretty n fast bike you have. AS for the BF pocket rocket pro I wonder if there is a used one for sale.
MBS gave a quote as per my spec, too ex.

Hope to meet you one day from Fort rd to CV.

  17. King Seng #31, juz like you to know that we really appreciate your help in the photos uploading job, diligently collating pix from so many emails sent to you by so many photographers.
    Thank you!!

Julian #32, I think rarely will you find any BF PRP for resale. Mostly they love it so much & they can’t find any better replacement.
I think no need to go for the Pro, juz the pocket rocket.

Sure, can ride with you Fort Rd -> CV, I’m a regular on this route.
Anyone else care to join us??? we can arrange…I’m looking forward to this..

  18. JM#32 & PT#33,

Read both posts….cyclists lingo me no understand what talking you both..

    – MBS = ?? (Marina Bay Sands???)
    – BF PRP = ?? (what is this item??)
    – BF PRP Pro = ?? (what is the diff fm above item??)

Lastly, Fort Rd —> CV, like to join but have no bike. So how to rent one and return at CV and not at Fort Rd??

  19. Hi Ivan

MBS- My Bike Shop, located at Clementi West. Sell mainly foldies, includes some top end foldies.

BF PR- Bike Friday Pocket Rocket (BF is the brand, Pocket Rocket is the series or model). Price about $3.5K- top end foldie.

BF PRP – Bike Friday Pocket Rocket Pro. Julian says about $5K plus, for professionals like him…haha..he’s planning to get one.

Ivan, we can ride from Fort Rd or can meet at McDonalds -> CV, then back same route, so u can rent bike from kiosk.

Anna, Ivan, we can do this on Sat mornings together with Julian.
    Let’s arrange..

    Peggy

  20. JM/PT,

Suggestion: Can JM EO the next mthly cycling on 17Mar2012 with route (McDonalds) Fort Rd -> CV -> Fort Rd (McDonalds) and make it at special “MORNING” cycling session instead of evening/4pm..??

I will help out to be the Sweeper at the back and PT can be in between the cyclists…can?

Speed of cycling: say at a controlled speed of about 5-8KM/Hour? Riding slow (is difficult, not easier) will improves each cyclist’s balancing and handling abilities of the bike……and also have the chance/time to see/enjoy the surroundings/scenarios.

How? Can? Think about it? Sleep over it…..and let us know, say about 03Mar2012?

Cycling Team: Pls note my suggestion above. TQ.

  21. Hi peggy,

NOW i know why you look under age for SHC min age of 45…
when i saw you last Saturday at the Charity Event..
Thanks for the ride to the MRT.

    Have an enjoyable-cycling Day !!

  22. Felice

Thanks, & my pleasure in giving a lift.

I will advise against going for expensive bikes for entry level.
For a start, can always buy a resale bike at a price which is affordable, in the region of $100++ to $200.
I think this is good enough.

  23. Hi peggy,

We used to have 2 reasonable good bikes for my younger girl
who is the out door type…but she gave away to her frens
without even informing me since she did not have time to use them….
Thanks for the advice..i think it is safer for me to “cangkul” my little yard for organic gardening..The OLD
backbone can not afford to fall…haha
I used to cycle quite a bit when i was in my teens and my mum was always waiting for me with a ‘ruler’.& your cycling
postings brought back ‘bad &sweet memories ‘with ruler’s mark on my feet …and being grounded for mths in the house
That is why i let my girl go cycling as & when she likes as long as i know where & who etc..Mum just didn’t understand
    what ‘free-spirit’ meant..but i understood her concern..
    feet …

  24. To all cyclists,

If you are thinking of cycling in the morning from ECP to CV and back, you will probably be cycling in the hottest part of the day, ie 11am to 2pm. Just think, meet at 9.00 to 9.30am, wait for stragglers, chat and collect bikes and start, 9.30am to 10am. Halfway to CV will be 11am, start to sweat. Arrive CV and have lunch or snack and drinks, 12noon to 1pm. Start return journey to ECP, 1pm to 3pm.

Good luck. 3hours in the sun, at peak, will age your skin by 3 months, or is it 6 weeks?

But the good thing is thee may be a smaller crowd in ECP when you return.

For those thinking of buying a foldable bike, I suggest you borrow one from some SHC members for 3 to 4 months and trial it out before you fork out money for it.

Another consideration for cyclists who might become interested recreational cyclists, not the hard core type like Yew Kwong, Renee, or Douglas, know the difference between a foldable bike and a good bike which can be folded.

When they design a foldable bike, most of the focus is on weight, foldability and size. Not much consideration to what a good bike should feel. Contrast it with a good bike that can be folded, maybe not so small etc, but it has all the parameters of a good road bike, balance, feel, weight, cycling position, stability etc.

Of course, dont spend too much on a foldie, unless you got money flowing out every time your exhale.

  25. Hi Cycling Enthus/would-be-cycling EOs

There could be those in favour of other timing/day and/or location/route other than the monthly cycling organised by the cycling team.

Please feel free to organise. The idea is to keep cycling alive in SHC and to encourage interest in cycling. Nevermind who’s the EO, where and when.

  26. Hi,
For morning session, suggest we start early like 7:15am, tops 7:45am.
This way, we will avoid the hot sun that Charles had highlighted in #40 above.
And yes, a small group will be more manageable since this will be a slow ride. Especially goods for new cyclist (learning to balance and handling purposes) or for new bike (with cyclist getting to know the bike intimately).
    Cheers!

  27. Hi guys

    Morning, day n night rides.

Cycling at any time of the day has different kind of enjoyment. Morning, u get to see sunrise, hear bird chirping (I think it’s more cock crowling), enjoy fresh air n hv nice breakfast at scenic places. However, u will get some sun over your body. Either u choose not to cycle in the morning or start cycling very early morning like 5 am. Afternoon, we all know the sun is always there but we get to see more life at places. However, u can also choose not to cycle or use stuff like sunblock, sun glasses, hats, longsleeve wear n visor to keep the sun away. Gettomg a plc to sit down n enjoy the food may pose a problem with so many people around at places. Night, nothing to worry but to take precaution, lgihts are compulsory to light up your path as and when needed. Enjoy the still of the night, ride to the beach to watch people fishing, ride to different places in the midst of light or no traffic.

Logistics wise, bicycle rental shops operates as early as 6am at CV n 11am at ECP. Unless u hv your own bikes, the timing can be flexible for morning ride. Bike rental in the daytime is easily available. As for night ride, I have no idea as I have never rented a bike before.

  28. I have cycled to Changi Village from my place (around Farrer Park) quite a few times last year. I start out abt 5.45 am and reached CV abt 7.30 am and have breakfast before I cycled back to reach home before 10 am. Do watch out for joggers and walkers who stray onto the cycling track along ECP.

You do not need an expensive or high-end bike – just an ordinary bike which I bought from a hypermart when they are having sales costing less than a hundred dollars. The possibility of getting stolen will be lesser as I tend to leave the bike anywhere – MRT stations, neighbourhood shops etc. I got my not so cheap and not so expensive bike stolen within a week.

Unfortunately I will not be able to join for cycling for quite some time until my neck and shoulder aches are healed. My nerve around my neck is pressing on my C5 + C6 of my spine and is causing the problem. Have been seeing physiotherapy and acupuncturist to solve the problem.

  29. Hi Steven Ng,

You say: Have been seeing physiotherapy and acupuncturist to solve the problem.

For your info, we have a SHCian who is a physiotherapist himself. Got to know him from a earlier Round-Table dinner event. I believe his name is Paul Phua. Perhaps you would like to seek him out for some advice or 2nd opinion.

Do note that I have NO vested interests in his practice. Just thot that I should info you this and hope that it may be useful.

Do contact him if you are keen to follow up on it because I believe that due to biz ethics, he will not initiate calling/contact you himself since it will amount to being direct selling which is a No-No taboo and not allow in SHC House Rules.

You have a great work week ahead!

    Ivan Lim

  30. Hi Ivan,

Thank you. I am interested to seek unbiased advice from
Paul Phua. Maybe you can let me have his email address to – stevenngpk at gmail dot com (plse replace ‘at’ with ‘@’ and ‘dot’ with ‘.’ and delete the spaces in between. This is avoid spamming purposes from emails harvestor)

    Hi Daisy,

    Thank you.

    Hi Caroline,

I am not considering chiropractor at the moment. I have make enquiry previously and they expect a consultation fee of at least $80 per session and can run into a 3 figure sum. They anticipate at least 10 to 15 session before I can see result.

  31. Hi Steven

My sister and I have visited the chiro and it really works well for us.

One of my sisters was having so much pain in her back and one of her legs that she practically could not walk. She had to drag the troubled leg. I sometimes have very bad pains on my hips but with the adjustments, I am doing fine. Initially, we have to go three times a week. But after about 15 visits, we go as and when we need to get some adjustments done.

After treatment, she has been going on holidays and walking normally.

It may be costly if you pay on single visit basis but if you sign a package, its less expensive. What is important is it gives you a better quality in life.

Whatever treatment you decide to undergo, most importantly is so long as it works.

    Take care.

    Carly
