Proposed Picnic Site

Hello fellow SHCians!

I plan to organize with the help of a couple of other members, a picnic in the month of May or July. June is out as it is a school holiday month. I did some research and I am picking the Kallang River Park as the first venue for SHC’s first? Picnic.

The day will most probably be on a Saturday afternoon.

I hope to get some responses and if I can form a group of at least 8 members, I will proceed to set up a post with the day/date
firmed up.

Picnics are relaxing activities where we can chit-chat, play some board games and enjoy kueh kueh, sandwiches, cakes, etc
(light snacks). The purpose of holding a picnic is basically to build and foster stronger relationships amongst members of SHC.

This is the site I picked. I will recce the place as soon as I get the ‘thumbs up’ from you guys to go ahead.

  1. Dear Ros,

Thanks for the initiative to organise a picnic for us. The venue seems ideal. I am planning the May Monthly Gathering and wondering if we can combine and make it a success.

Frina, shall we go for it?

    Dan

  2. Dan, the monthly gathering usually draws 50-70 members and if that’s the case, a permit needs to be applied with nparks.

Then, there’s the matter of picnic food……

    Ros

  3. Ros,

We can opt for pot-luck as in our previous gathering at Botanic Gardens, East Coast Parkway and Pasir Ris Park. On this scale logistic may be an issue provided we get enough support.

We are trying to do it differently from the usual monthly gathering. Let’s physically recce the venue and move from there.

  4. Hi Rosalind,

Thank you for conceptualising the idea of a potluck picnic. Somehow, our recent survey indicated that many members love potluck. I think this potluck picnic is a great way to get to chat and meet new friends.

I have just learnt how to make “Tau Huay” and likely this would be my contribution to your Potluck picnic.

And, hi fellow members, do raise your hands if you like to help out Rosalind in the organising of this event.

    Hi Dan,

You too. Thank you for starting to think about the May monthly gathering.

  5. Thank you Dan, Terence and Gabriella for giving me your support. It’s scary you know. Having to find out that fellow members either do not approve the activity or do not favour me as a person. The silence and absence of responses is disconcerting to say the least.

    Ros

  6. No No Rosalind Dearie, I fully support your excellent initiative. I would love to do a chicken with french loaves and other ideas for potluck but I hope my arm fracture will heal soon, that’s why I hesitate to say yes. Hope your date does not coincide with another event that someone has been edging me to go.

  7. Dear Ros

Thanks for coming up with this fantastic idea! I love my picnics so will register my attendance if nothing important has been planned for that day.

Looking forward to making something tasty for the potluck.

Appreciate very much your initiative. In SHC, its the norm with a slow start and the momentum picks up along the way.

    Jia yiu!

    Cheers

  8. #07 Susan CH,

Get well soon Susan! Do not strain your arm for a couple of months at least. Fractures take time to heal.

    #08 Caroline,

Carly, I naughty ya? Making members feel pai seh for not responding. Hehehe

    Cheers

  9. Hi Rosalind,
I would love to participate in your potluck picnic but I will have to see if I’m in town, as I’m planning to go away for a period of time in July.
    Cheers

  10. Hi Rosalind #6,

Cant help wanting to tease you here since you spoke your mind about members’ silence & absence…I would like to help BUT.. am afraid…if you dont like me, you might ‘super-glue’ me to a tree or others might hantam me, kekekekeke!! Mmm…wont subject myself to such risks altho I’m so used to it liao, hee.

See you at our next Easterlies’ gathering –
we might be best of frens, hehe.

  11. Thanks Ros, but life goes on I still have to exercise my arm. I have a helper at home to blend, chop, slice, squeeze, everything, so it’s not too bad with the cooking. :)

  12. #12 Pearl Wong,

Pearl! I am vocal online but in person, I ‘don’t know what to say’ (quote a MP)…. :p

I’ve been immune to gossips since I was in my 20’s and although I look snobbish in person, I’m not that bad a chabor lah! Not everyone can click with anyone but we might have something in common with everyone and time will reveal what it is.

It’s natural to find someone irritating but we never realise we ourselves might be irritating to others, right or not? Sooooo…this forthcoming potluck picnic will not be solely organized by me. I cannot do it alone. It’ll probably be a co-EOs kind of event.

    Wanna help?

    Cheers
    Ros

  13. Dear all,

Dan and myself and ??? (whoever wants to come along) will be recce-ing Kallang Riverside Park soon to ensure the venue is convenient for SHC members to commute. We’ll also see if there’s an ideal spot for 50+ members to gather; have seats for those who cannot tahan standing too long and also if there’s shades in case halfway the sky lets go rain water.

If all goes well, a date will be firmed up and this potluck picnic will be linked to May’s monthly gathering EO’ed by Dan. Hahaha….. I will be busy preparing assorted sandwiches and hence the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign will be hanging over my neck. :p

    Cheers
    Ros

  14. Hi Rosalind,

I can visualise you as a chatty & fun person too and yes, sometimes we dont know what to say especially in ‘sit-down’ gatherings where people around you are not chatty. Thats why I prefer to organise drama, karaoke & dance gatherings where people are simply engrossed watching, busy singing & dancing than talking. If one needs to talk, he/she needs to shout, hahaha.

I’m not so much an outdoor activity type but I can help to ferry food or barang barang for your picnic from the East. So..anyone from Bedok Reservoir to Tampines Mall back to Marine Parade can tompang lah, ho boh?

  15. #17 Pearl,

Wahhhhhhh I want to cry! You are so kind to offer transportation of food/barang2 for the potluck picnic! Thank you, thank you. I so happen to live in Bedok Reservoir…*dancing a jig*

    We’ll be in touch, Pearl.

    Cheers

  16. Hi Ros and Dan,

Good idea to have a picnic.

The cycling group had a ‘similar’ potluck cum cycling sesssion in Changi Village. There was so much food, they only cycled 20 mins and ate for 2 hours.

So I think if you organise it as a potluck, you will save yourself a headache and not have to worry about the food logistics.

If you hold it in July, the cycling group may also join you for the potluck picnic. So my suggestion is, if you don’t mind, to hold it on a Sat, together with them, in July or later. But only a suggestion.

BTW I can help with the recce as I also want to recce the possible routes to Kallang River. I am familiar with the place. There is a canoe club and many people ski there on weekends.

  17. Ros Dear

Its quick thinking and not being naughty. Just do it, whatever it takes to get it moving right? And….. you are doing fine :)

    Gambate!

    Carly

  18. Hey Rosalind#18,

You are a drama mama too wor..can join our drama grp lor, kekeke. So, you live near me ..we are neighbours! Mmm, if you need help to buah lo ti, call me, hee.

  19. Hi there Ros

May I suggest, or you may already intend to, that you recce on a Saturday during the time you intend to have the picnic. I’ve read in the papers, although a long time ago, many Thai foreign workers would gather in the park especially near the Golden Mile, for their weekend break. It could have been on a Sunday though and there again the Kallang River Park is quite a long stretch.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers
    Daisy

  20. #28 Daisy Yeo,

Thank you so much for alerting me about sharing the park with foreign workers on weekends. Indeed you are right. If they chope the entire stretch of the park then it’ll be really inconvenient for us. Not say we look down on them or what but overcrowding is not a good ambience for picnics or potlucks.

I’ll check if the venue is convenient in terms of commuting first……

    Cheers
    Ros

  21. Hi Daisy/Rosalind,

Maybe you get the day wrong. Saturday not much foreign workers as most of them still working. For Saturday it’s the students who will be there for their canoeing and other activities.

But on Sunday there will be quite a few foreign workers there as most of them have their day-off on Sundays.

I can help to recce if requested. Normally I jog/cycle through the area in the morning although I do not do it regularly for the last few months due to neck injury.

Kallang Riverside Park is quite big – which side of the river are you referring to? If you go to more quieter area it should not be a problem as regard to foreign workers chopping the area even on Sunday.

For commuting wise it should not be problem. There are bus services (toward city – 2, 7, 12, 13, 32, 33, 51, 63, 67, 80, 100, 197 and Kallang MRT which you need to walk a slight longer distance – about 400 meters away.

  22. Hi Ros,

I would like to join your picnic. What shall I bring and
for how many people? Also, how do we get to the Picnic site?
    Appreciate your advice,
