Collecting old spectacles

If you have some old pairs of spectacles, sitting somewhere in the drawer, and you are not using them, do not throw them away.  There are many less fortunate people who have difficulties with their vision, and cannot afford new specs.  We can give these to them.

I have been working with Ivy Low on the collection of old specs.  So far, Ivy has collected 15 pairs of old spectacles from her family.  We have just started this project, and if you or your family members have some unwanted old specs, please contact Ivy Low or myself here.

I am targetting one hundred pairs of old specs, and once we reach this number, I would give them to a couple of old folks groups in Thailand.  You are invited to join me, once we fix a date.

  1. Thanks, Rosalind, for being the first to support this project. If you are attending the D&D, you can pass the specs to me; otherwise, please email me your contact so that I can arrange for the collection. Here is my address: LKYIVY@HOTMAIL.COM

  2. Let’s assume this scenario………each of the 111 guests attending the D&D comes with 2 pairs of specs, totalling 222 pairs. Hehehe, we might all be excited into humming the nursery rhyme “baa baa black sheep”……..”yes sir yes sir 3 bags full (of specs)”. Maybe, we cd put them up for auction and raise some $ for charity altho the successful bidder may not know what to do with 222 pairs of odd-size, powers specs……

  3. Based on Ah Liu’s scenario, looks like I have to bring some guni sacks to the D&D. It is definitely encouraging to see the support of our SHC members. Specs…specs…the more the better for the needy.

  4. Hehe, Clara, me imaginative meh? See after our postings, Lily came running up with another pair of specs, and yes, Ivy may hv to borrow our friend’s 9-seater benz to send the specs home and will still be busy working on it at 5 p.m., 25 March 2007.

  5. Hi Ivy,

I am VERY HAPPY that the SHC is doing Charity and Social Services to the needy and less fortunate.

The old “ah pek” or ah por”
spectacles can be RECYCLED for Good use and not thrown away.

I had some specs too .
I will bring along on the D and D night.

Btw,how does Ivy Low looks like?
    Steven

  6. Ok, some more specs from Steven, thanks a lot !

    How does Ivy look like?

She looks good, a healthy pink with a blossoming smile. On a scale of 1-10, she easily surpasses 8.5. She likes it plain but when she puts on the make-up, wow wow, guys will start forming queues longer than they did for hello kitty. But most of all, she prides herself with a heart of gold.

  7. Tim, thanks for reminding me of this special service from our dear member, Harvey Campbell. I was just trying to figure out what to do with the “three” sacks of specs and how to pack them to Chiangmai. Thot I’d need Dai Gor (Big Brother in canto)Terence’s advice.

Steven, we are collecting old specs of all types: the longsighted, shortsighted sunglasses etc for the young and old. Curious to know I how I look like? Hmm…you’ll see for yourself this sat…;) I’ll try my luck with Dolly to see if I can set up a little corner for “Old Specs Collection”. Please look out for it.

  8. Havent heard someone calling another “Dai Gor” outside of the family (pls hor, dai gor as in canto, not in hokien) for a long long time. It brings us closer.

When Lei Dai Sor was still around & telling stories, invariably he called a baddy Dai Gor Seng.

Terence is S.K.Seng and he’s our Dai Gor so…………………………….?

No lah, our Dai Gor Seng is a goody who can easily fit into any goodies bag for charity. Yes, he’s that charitable & good.

  9. Hi Ivy
I hv some new spectacle frames (without lens). Do you accept ? If so, I will bring it along this Sat.
I will donate a few old specs too.

    See yah !
    Susan

  10. Ah Liu, thanks for the compliment. Honestly, I like this name of yours. Memory must be failing you. I’m just like any Ah Soh you find in Tiong Bahru market. Dont give other members high expectations, hor.

Susan, dont think the frames are useful for this round of collection. I need to look for an optician who is willing to provide the lens and fitting. Can we have the old specs first? Thanks.

  11. Hi Ivy, mo mun tai lor… I will get the committee to get space for the spec collection la… I will personally do a placard for you for this purpose lor…

Aiyo, beauty lies on each beholder la.. Ah Liu can give you such high mark sure got his reasons 1.. Tiong Bahru Ah Soh also can be Yang Gui Fei mah… right… Liu-san…

  12. Ivy, U must be kidding. I frequent Tiong Bahru market quite often n most times, I see “Tai Tai”. Dont get a chance to see Ah Soul.

If by chance we meet at Tiong Bahru market one day, let have a cup of tea hor.

I wrote this down so that I can pass my old spectacles to the right person as I have not met Ivy before. )

You got it now Tim Ah Liu .

’ll try my luck with Dolly to see if I can set up a little corner for “Old Specs Collection”. Please look out for it.

( Good idea. We can spot you from afar.) and that makes our job easier.

    Steven.

  14. Dolly, so sweet and thoughtful of you. I know you can do fanciful placards. Thank u so much.

Yew Kwong, you can hv more than a cup of tea, on me, no problem.

Steven, I knew where u were coming from. Ah Liu is always “how fa fa”…cos he’s good at using and writing flowery language.

    See you!

  15. Ah liu didnt say good, people want apollo gee; ah liu said good also no good…….must life be like this?

On beauty, I recall what i read sometime ago. Once famous actress lily wa! was said to hv gone for a “skin-pulling” to remove wrinkles, so much so that she had 3 eyes (the centre being her belly button) and 2 mouths after her last pull. It makes me believe more and more in inner beauty.

Yew Kwong, you siao huh, want to see Ah Soul for what? If ah soul sees you and is smitten by yr good looks, follows you home that’s yr problem but if after following you home she also follows you to the D&D, that becomes our problem.

Sure, Steven, I knew fr day 1 that you’d no motive other than good; that’s why i painstakingly described Ivy to you, no intro fee asked.

  16. Hi Ivy,
Wow such a big hat to loop on me lah… paiseh paiseh… No big deal la.. Just doing my part only.

Just let me know if you require any further help….. Dolly

  17. A big hat looped on you & you said paiseh paiseh. Ok lor, take it down, turn it facing up and, starting fr SGCC and into chomp chomp, do a solo charity drive and then what wd you say…….paisi paisi?

Seriously, I admire yr steely resolve and composure even with last minute frights staring in yr face.

  18. Tim,
hahaha,,,,, always thinkg of chomp chomp even till today hor… first, pole dancing, next.. wine opening n now.. charity drive… maybe you can partner me in this charity drive then only me going solo la…

    Har… I so fierce meh….. Anyway thanks…

  19. Yes, Dolly, I do think of chomp chomp.

Altho no more staying in Sgoon Gdns, i still hv many fond memories of the place and that teochew ah sor selling, of all things, xia mien. Caught unaware the first time when she poked her head out behind the food cabinet, I almost fainted. With a yard of powder on her face, she looked more pale than those pale & eerie ang kong kia placed behind lorry heads.

Hope she is keeping well, join our Silvers Club and needless to say, treat us to her xia mien.

  20. Sorry for the late reply. Just got in last night.
Shall be attending the D & D. Will bring 10 pairs of spects and 4 empty spects cases. Is that ok?

  21. Didnt see Ivy lugging sacks of specs home altho the used specs filling her pockets and handbag wd hv made her an easy target for robbers, who then wondered why this gorgeous lass kept so many odd sizes, shapes of glasses………..and believeing that smthg wasnt quite right there, screamed themselves to madness…………and checked into woodbridge for good.

  22. Ah Liu, your estimate was not quite right. Of the 111 guests, some wore contact lens, some had no access to computers and some had PCs but didnt read the blog. Nevertheless, the response was not too bad. We’ll continue with the collection. I suggest you check with Terence to see if he was robbed cos the specs were passed to him that nite. I went home safe and sound ;) Thank u.

  23. Hi Ivy,
Seems like you hv set a password for the spec collection and I try using mine but it din’t work le…

Are you saying that we using our password to log in to read har??

  24. Hi Dolly, I was trying to put up a new posting but faced with some difficulties…dont know what went wrong. I put up a draft but didnt know how to publish it. Am still waiting response from Admin. Do u think u can help? The password thing was unintended.

  25. Hi Jeremy,

We just finished the 1st collection this year, and I had delivered them to the eye collection centre.

For the moment, there is no collection. I am likely to repeat this in two years time. Thank you for the thought.

And, if you have any projects, ideas and suggestions, raise your hands.
