SHC website – making it run faster

Currently, the SHC website is moderated.  We get approx 5 spams a week, and usually, they are killed before you see it.  The spams are usually about viagra and online medical purchase.  With this change, spams will appear; but we will kill them, once we spot them.

"Comments" are moderated.  They make take between 1 minute to 24 hours, before they are approved to appear on this website.  Considering the type of comments we are getting so far, I am thinking of allowing Comments" to be approved in real time.  We skip the moderation process.  In other words, if you write a "Comment", and submit it, the "Comment" is automatically approved.  This will make the SilverHairsClub website fast and more exciting.

As for "Post", everybody can write a "Post".  If you have a record of keeping within the rules of the club on this website, your "Post" will appear automatically too.  If not, you can still write, but your "Post" will be moderated.

This means that username "Guest" will have to be deleted.  This also means that a published "Comment" or "Post" can be deleted by the administrator whenver it is found to be unacceptable.

For SilverHairs who have long stories to tell or share with other members, please use Pages "Non-SHC stories, jokes, info".  Do not write as a Post or a Comment.  This is space optimisation.

Effective immediately.  This feature may be withdrawn, if widely abused.  I hope not, as we are all SilverHairs.

(And, if this feature does not work today, I am sure I can get it to work by Monday.  I see a little snag.)

  1. I hope this feature will make the SHC website more interactive. At the same time, many SilverHairs who use this website have stayed within the rules of the club. So, I feel there is no need for moderation.

    Have fun. Terence

  2. Dear All,

Obviously, Terence is counting on our maturity and sense of proportion to free ourselves from someone moderating our comments. But do please be responsible for what we say, and be held accountable to the same.

In any event, the majority of silverhairs opinion & censure should be enough to thrash comments which are trash. It’s hoped that the Administrator wont have to resort to withdrawing this facilitation.

  3. Your comments are now automatically approved, if you are a registered SHC forum user.

If you suspect a comment is a spam, or virus, please send me an email immediately, and we shall send over a team of insecticide killers. Do not attempt to kill it yourself, as the virus may be armed, and therefore, dangerous.

Have fun! so far, most of the virus or spams are harmless. Usually, these viruses are viagra touts. They can also turn out to be genuine Rolex watch sellers. Stay clear.

  4. Hi Terence

I noticed that Andrew’s three comments posted in the wee hours of this morning are awaiting moderation. And my comment which was just posted too.

Am just wondering if “comments are now automatically approved” has reverted back to previous practice.

Hope to hear your clarification here. Thanks.

    Joy

  5. Hi Joy,

Yes, the system has been organised in such a way that comments are automatically published.

However, some comments do go to the moderation queue, if they are flagged for moderation, eg certain words, too many links, virus possibilities, has been flagged up before, etc. If one Post or comment is flagged, all other comments are flagged in sequence too. There is a moderation procedure.

We do have many unexpected global guests from Russia, and they have registered online. I am sure we dont want to see too many medicial advertisements, Rolex watches for sale, and dating ads from other sites. When these comments go to the moderation queue, they are flagged, and the user is quickly taken off the queue.

More than 99% of comments are apporved. Hope this helps.

  6. Joy,

Of course, its automatic. It goes automatically to the censor and returns back automatically.

Whip the monkey in the black box … hee, hee…

We need images in the forum. SHC’s Investment Club (SIC) needs it. Try explaining Ichimoku Kinko Hyo. We’ll just need to be very patient and chorus Bee Gee’s “Words” in the background.

Explore multiple host various high bandwidth areas of interest eg SIC, commented picture gallery in blog form, link to Youtube with a commented video gallery, music clips from Edwin & Gang in concert etc

Online interaction is a major part of what makes SHC. Limit on-line, you limit SHC.

Not fair for “cheng kay” to top up again for upgrading. Anyone with hosting can contirbute.

    “Sound of Silence” ???

Wow, Why you woke up so early in the Saturday morning?

Don’t complaint, The system has to sleep too.

When it is awake, it is automatic and fast. But what can it does when it is sleeping?

Sorry, System, I posted in the wee hours when you’re sleeping, and let our lady Joy find out you are not doing you job properly. Hoping Terence not deduce your salary.

  8. Something new was raised to me, and I did not realise it.

Cheng told me that when someone puts a comment under a Post, the SHC system will send an email to the owner of that Post. The system informs the owner that he/she has an email, even for old Posts.

I have never received these emails, so I was not aware. If you have written a Post, and someone writes a comment, do you get an email, from the system?

    Terence

  9. Hi Joy, Terence,

I like you reply ‘ I do ‘ sounds like a long term commitment.

Terence i thought you already know that, you will continue to receive ‘any comments ‘ to your post through your email. So the owner of the post knows if attention or reply is required.

    Cheers

  10. Hi Terence,

Yes,I have receive some emails after putting up a Post. The contents of each email corresponds to each comment as it would appear in tandem on the SHC web.

  11. Terence

My post is now archived so perhaps that is the reason I am not getting the alerts. Could you take it off from archive. It is troublesome to have to check the post now and then as it is an ongoing event.
    Thanks
    Oi Cheng

  12. Consider a serious makeover. Move away from proprietory engines like the one here.

Skin over commonly available forum engines in public domain. They are freeware or cheapware. And powerful. They give you the stae-of-the-art functionality eg images and multimedia communication to take SHC forward.

Otherwise, areas like Investment Club will have to spin-off their own multi-media forums. Explaining invesment decisions in the current textual form is like playing charade. A single techical graph tells a thousand trades.
