  1. We would have to postphone this session for those who love to cook and bake.

Maybe, it is due to insufficient time. The number is rather small.

So, for the moment, the Saturday 25 Aug 2007 meeting for cooks and bakers is OFF.

    Terence Seah

  2. If you love to teach cooking or baking.
If you like to offer your specialties, cakes or cookies for sale.

Please see comment #84. As a start, Eleanor has offered her kitchen this Saturday 25 Aug between 3 and 6pm.

    Interested?

  3. In response to SilverHairs with skills, we are gathering a group meeting for SilverHairs who can cook or bake, not for those who would like to learn or taste the food.

As interests are varied, the agenda has not been clearly set yet. However, the objectives would include:

    1. How SilverHairs with cooking or baking skills can impact their knowledge to other SilverHairs? An idea of a kitchen for trainers.

    2. Suggestions on how SilverHairs who loves cooking or baking can market their cakes, pastries and specialties?

As a start, Eleanor has offered her kitchen this Saturday 25 Aug between 3 and 6pm. This activity is not confirmed; but if you like cooking or baking, likes to teach or likes to sell your delicacy and specialties, please add your name here. Please mention your specialty.

If we have 10 people, we will proceed, if not, we may hold the activity on another day. Whatever the number, please indicate your interest to participate. Strictly, for those who would like to teach or demo cooking or baking. And, also for those who can also cater or sell their kuehs, pastries, and different food.

    Comments welcome. Terence Seah

  4. Hi Chef Daniel

Thank you for sharing your grandma’s secret receipe with us. The food was fantastic and really sedap indeed. Luckily you hv boxes of tissue paper for us…he..he..

  5. Yes Daniel I would like to join Gingko in thanking you for a delicious lunch and also your warm hospitality in allowing a group of SHC ladies to ‘invade’ your very private domain.
Gingko has meticulously described everything right down to the texture of the prawns which leaves me to just second her views. But I just love the petai beans and you might just acquire the taste for them in time to come, Gingko. All in all it was a very pleasant afternoon although a little shorter than what we would have liked as we were just starting to enjoy the singing before you really had to go. Like what Gingko said I hope you were not too late for your appointments.

    Catherine Yeo

  6. Hi Daniel,

Thank you very much for the sumptuous lunch. The Beef Rendang was tender & aromatically done; Assam Fish/Soup tangy, sweet & spicy; Sambal Petai Prawns firm yet crunchy. Only thing is I am still learning to acquire the taste of the Petai seeds. Last but not least, the sambal belachan was mind-blowing!

I could see Catherine Yeo was tearing and sniffling from peeling the onions/garlics and had to surrender eventually; Shirley Wong was enjoying her food in a truly basic, literally “finger-licking” good way, and Susan Chang was perspiring through her head from the fiery hot spices whilst it was raining cats and dogs outside. Really sedap, sedap!

It makes me the more appreciative of good food cooked by chefs with their hearts and souls. All it took was only about 15 minutes to eat the meal but the amount of preparation work, choice selection of spices and ingredients that went on in the kitchen was a meticulous and tedious affair, especially for Peranakan dishes.

As for dessert, it was quite a surprise. Your impromptu “drumming” up and Ronald Wi’s guitar, music & mini sing-a-along were a sweetener to end the lunch gathering.

Daniel, thank you once again for your time and the opportunity to invade your home and mess up your kitchen. ;)

Sorry, if you were held back. Hope you weren’t too late for your church music practice and the rest of your day’s programs weren’t disrupted badly.

P/S. One question – Was it Homali or Basmati rice you used?? I like the texture.

  7. Bro,

Count me in, Singapore or JB also boleh.

Fully support the idea of using a chalet, bungalow type in Changi.

Any Civil Servant here who can help book one for the occasion?

    Cheers,
    God Bless KC

  8. Hi UD,

Probly arrange 1 cooking lesson on a weekday at your JB house for those who can make it and get Ronald Wi involved on tpt. Set a date and time and see what is e response. After lesson, we can help to clean up the place also. Just a suggestion.
    Cheers Molly

  9. Hi everybody,

I have not tried Daniel’s cooking, but looking at the pictures of the dishes, I am also tempted. So, perhaps we should hear from him and the 1st batch of participants, after they have sampled the Paranakan cooking.

Meantime, there are so many interested learners. And, sadly, Daniel cannot accomodate everybody. Space, time and costs are the concerns.

Maybe, we should pursue this further. Daniel had put up a suggestion to use a chalet.

How do you think we can further encourage these cooking and baking classes? Please share your ideas and suggestions. Then, all of us can read your ideas, and come up with some workable solutions. Many heads better than one.

    Terence Seah

  10. Hi Jnnyaries,

You’re so serious, puttng me at a loss as to how to deal with you now.

Heeee…….I can read that you share a vision, a very positive vision, and the optimism of growing SHC into a big fraternity, yet free & easy and unfettered by no more norms than the minimum taboos.

I do share yr joy (Joy Chuang is looking since she is dragged in) if 1 day, SHC too is a favourite site for homemakers who will hv more places to frequent that the wet markets and the cots.

I respect yr religion, understand and happily accept it as the usual parting greeting…..

    Cheers !

    tim

  11. Hi Tim,

Please don’t get me wrong. What I meant was that Daniel’s cooking class may pull in more homemakers who are shy and not ready to socialize yet. So by attending cooking classes with SHC ladies members, we hope to be encouraged and be motivated by these ladies so as to re-connect with society.

I have read from a post by Terence that his dream is to have 10,000 members for SHC. So what i meant is when more homemakers are attracted to this program, his memberships will increase.

When i said ‘God Bless’ to Daniel, it is because he did mentioned in his thread that he has to attend church in the morning. It is a common practice for christains to greet each other with ‘God Bless’ :) i am a christain too.

  12. Frankly, while there’s no doubt that if jnnyaries’ wish comes true, it’ll be “good for Chairman Terence” but I aint too sure whether with 10,000 homemakers crowding to learn in his Grandma’s Kitchen – and jostling for his attention – it will bring him tears of joy. Or just tears.

(Maybe, he’d then rather cook for a refugee camp).

Haha, little wonder why jinnyaries signed off with a prayer for him ………

  13. Hi Daniel,

Hope you are able to find a bigger space for SHC members to learn from your ‘Grandma’s Kitchen’ :)

I am sure your cooking class (if successful) will attract and encourage more homemakers to join SHC as members. Good for Chairman Terence, his target is 10,000 members for SHC :)

With such overwhelming responses to your ‘grandma’s kitchen’ and with limited space, it is only understood that only the active members and those that you met in gatherings will benifit.

My second paragraph was just a joke to cheer me up while waiting in line for your bigger class to be opened. (it sounds a bit pushy, i am so sorry)

    Cheers and God Bless You.

  14. Thank you jnnyaries for coming to the rescue.
Due to space constraints and personal reasons I have decided that this cooking will be on an invited basis.

I apologise for any inconenience caused.Unless we can get a larger place, I will put my class on hold for the time being.

    Best regards

    Daniel Kang

  15. Hi Daniel,

Nice meeting you at the gathering yesterday. As mentioned, I would like to join in your baking class/sessions. Plse reserve a place for me.
    Thanks. Peggy

  16. Hi Daniel

We know we are too late for this round. Please put us on your next round of tasting. Die, die must try.
    Cheers

    Jeffrey and Maureen

  17. Hi Daniel,

Something Brewing? I am a home-maker always shying away from SHC activities. I thought your cooking class is the most suitable programme for home-makers to start off with SHC activities. But too bad, registration is closed!

How about adding one more to make it No.8 for all SHC members to ‘FA’ from your ‘pots of gold’. I am willing to pay for your ‘stock price’ from $5 to $10 plus the 7% GST :D

    My e-mail address: jnnyaries@yahoo.com.sg

If I am successful to attend your class on the 28th July, I will come with a bouquet of flowers for the ladies of SHC :) Cheers!

  18. I am keen for all your cooking classes. Hvr, guaging the responses, I knew I’ll never stand a chance to attend any….ever; unless I log into the site 24/7.

Daniel, u serious abt the fortnightly classes? How abt putting my name down as a “life member”? If u’r ok, I’ll gv u my gmail add so u can alert me as & when u’r up to conducting a class. Lament using the off email as this puts us off action for 2 days/week.

Alt, how abt collating headcounts for interested members and schedule yr sessions?

  19. wah!phew!…after reading all the comments & all…I just realised…I missed a rare opportunity lor!..2nite all the ‘char bors’ sure will mob a ‘celebrity!..hehehe:)incl me too..just in case i can hv a place:)as Gingko says..die die also must try lah!!
Daniel Kang..i’m very ‘malu’ now..i cant cook!btw, yr Assam fish can put brinjal?..sounds yummy!yummy!

  20. So, it was a BOS scenario. Understand, but do check this mail box as soon as you have a chance. I need your help for a “private” matter. Keep guessing…

  21. Seriously Gingko, I have two email addresses. The one you have right now, I sometimes check only because I can read it at home and at the office and most times, I forget I have it.

The reason I gave this address is because the last time I opened my office email, I got an avalanche of msg from our enthusiastic members regarding a certain outing.

My boss was standing behind me and I nearly pengsan Ha! Ha!

  22. Hi Caroline,

I have just been told I have “eyes of an eagle”. Such a nice compliment! SHCians prefer to call me Gingko, but then I notice they also like to spell that name so innovatively and differently. Interesting.

Caroline, you get tricked by me liao. That’s the way I get myself invited to your guest book..

Seriously, can you confirm if this is your correct e-mail address: caroline.gee23@gmail.com. Reply me a TEST msg to confirm it.

  23. Hi Ginko & Susan,

Thanks for championing my attendance for Daniel’s cooking and makaning session.

So far, he did not say anything so just let it be. I am patient. I will wait for the next round.

Really the kind of spirit I like. Willing to share and care for each other.

If next time got makan party or tea session at my place, Gingko & Susan surely get invitation first. This is called you scratch my back and I scratch yours hee! hee! Luv it :)

Looking forward to see you tonight Ginko cos I think we have not met before.

  24. Gingko

I believe U hd since graduated from the 1st time U heard those tales. These days its quite ez 2 communicate even wif those in the other world simply by VOIP, IM or email hor. If Singapore is one of his stopovers, we can have ?? 2gether.

  25. Hi Daniel,

So, may we know who are the mysterious
    7 gluttons ?

Wah ! You costs gone up 100% !?
Ok, never mind, maybe food very big portion and very sedap, then you have to provide more toilet rolls, enough toilets not…… ha..ha…

    Ann Lim

  26. Uncle Daniel,

Not only is your cost going up, now you are including toilet paper and contemplating deSERT (wasteland). What are you up to? Susan, I also pa, pa.

  27. Caroline,

Buay peiseh. At times mesti die, die must try. Anyway, I have promised to help Daniel wash the dishes. Since I am offering you a portion of my food for tasting, you can come help dry the dishes. I wash, you dry… cheap labour for Daniel, excellent food for us.

  28. Yew Kwong,

Aiyo, you are always waiting for a chance to scare the wits out of me. I have a very delicate and weak heart, so don’t play play hor. If I have any “dong kua, tau fu” (winter melon and beancurd in Cantonese), rest assured my beloved father from 6-foot underground will come look for you… that’s the kind of SPIRIT you are talking about lor. Hee, hee.

  29. Hello Maria,

Initially, Daniel had trouble uploading his cooking/baking posting and it appeared under “2GREENDOTS RELAUNCHED”. So, the earlier comments were posted there. Eventually, his posting was successfully uploaded under the now “BAKING AND COOKING CLASSES” and all the later comments continue here. You may want to read both postings concurrently to get a clearer picture.

I believe you would hear from Daniel soon.

  30. Aiyah Daniel, since there are so many who are interested, why don’t make it 10 then instead of 7.. so Caroline, Maria and Shirley can come lor. Anyway, not everyone going to cook meh… only 1 chief cook and the rest trainer, watch and then eat, right ? Your stock market already up what, so what is 3 more. Maybe some can help to cut veg, peel the prawn or wash up lah… how, deal ? got free maid service some more…ha..ha..

Alamak, Daniel, why free toilet paper huh? … You mean your food is so spicy until like that meh. Better be prepared lor, ladies. LOL.

  31. Hi Daniel,
Can you post the names of the 7 persons in this cooking session. I was the 3rd to register. Can you also provide your email address please.
    Maria

  32. Hello Daniel,

I am also very new and have much difficulties in trying to get to know the “system”. When you next have a similar class please include my name – at this address: shalom.kok@gmail.com. My late Mum was a very cook, we live separately and never had a chance to learn from her. I really missed Perankan food so please let me know of new class. Thanks. Grace Kok

  33. UD or DU

Notice you are very “liak gu” leh especially among the gals. Cannot resist your charm (in drumming and cooking) Must relli meet you at the gathering tmr to see “What man horse see” (in Cantonese, meh yen mah? loi zhi hor fong?

  34. Daniel

Y costs up??? Due to increase of 2% GST??? Wow, U really following the Govt policies closely.

Free toilet paper. Not appropriate for use at delicious meals like urs. Perhaps tissues are better otherwise U may get them worried abt the meals they consume lor. LoL.

  35. Latest amendment!!!
    Menu and costs.
    Haha ….like stock market…..up.. up… up

    Registration is closed….:)

  36. Dear friends, Tar por’s and char bor’s,

For once in my life I am made to feel so important.I am really glad to be able to share whatever i know with all of you.

Due to space constraints, I deeply regret to inform you that I can only take in 7 participants.

I am not able to propose a schdule because my this is done on an ad hoc basis as it is not what I do for a living.

Maybe in future in can be done at a chalet on a forthnighlty basis where more can participate….just my two cents worth

    Uncle Dan

  37. Aiyoh Gingko, so paiseh leh! I am very thick skin lor. Got good food wat. Lau kui also never mind. Though I have not met you, but I like your style.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  38. Hi Daniel,

I am AMAZED at the great variety of your tempting Peranakan dishes and cookies shown in your photo album.

I would like to learn more from you.

When is your cooking Peranakan dishes starting ?

I would like to register for it.

    Regards,
    Steven Chan

  39. Daniel

Pls remember 2 submit ur activity schedules 2 us, especially Dolly, who do the updating in SHC’s calendar. This enables participating members 2 check updates from one place rather than going ard asking.

  40. Hello Caroline,

Goodness, you are one of a KEEN..ER. Daniel, how could you say NO to this lady? Jiak luck, jiak luck..

Caroline, you are so enthusiastic you overlooked his comment, ah? (See Comment #37, 2 Greendots Relaunched). He has music practice in church at 2pm leh. NVM, I’ll keep some of my portion for your tasting.

I really like this spirit…Cannot, also must try, try.

  41. Daniel,

Ha, ha, first you were afraid to be stalked, now you want to ‘chow lor’. See, how enthusiastic all our SHCians are??

If you must ‘chow lor’, let me know ‘coz I have a good refuge for you. How about the kelong/fishing trip for a breather? Ha,ha..

  42. Eh Daniel. Die die must go this one.

Remember we were supposed to meet together with Susan regarding the fishing cum bbq outing.

So how ah? Maybe I can join in the tasting since got no vacancy for cooking lesson and then we can adjourn for discussion about the fishing outing since Susan got place already?

If cannot never mind. Just trying my luck.

    No obligations.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee
