Online Flea Mart & Barter – November 2013

As the heading declares – the flea mart has expanded to include barter of goods and services .We are getting beyond money! Is there something or a service you need or wish to acquire? What can you offer in exchange? Do place an advertisement here and who knows, you may just find a match!

You can also offer knowledge in exchange for something from the people who are interested in attending your class.  The something will be an item from your wish list, so you must make known your wish list. Barter of knowledge was reported in the S.T. recently. It is a meaningful and fun idea.

Spring cleaning for Christmas and the new year is round the corner. Anything from your store room to give away or sell for a token price?  Do advertise and see how much fun and satisfaction you can get, especially from giving away your possessions!

A gentle reminder: When placing an advertisement, do be guided by the guidelines. Okay, looking forward to your advertisements especially if you are giving away stuff!. :)

Guidelines on placing advertisements

1. NO corporate/company/shop advertisements. Only advertisements of personal belongings and personal services are permitted.

2. Two advertisements per month per member.

3. Each advertisement must not exceed 10 lines.

4. No telephone numbers allowed. Only e-mail addresses

5. Advertisements on barter are permitted

I came to know about the SHC from eNN (Seng Kang). My interests are varied. I write on the forum regularly to improve my writing. In my autumn years, my priority is voluntary service. Hope to meet like-minded people and help initiate a programme/project for the disabled like the hearing impaired.

  1. Jassmine – I do not use the word “Barter” as it implies a “trade”. So with trade, it has profit or loss. I would be more comfortable to use the words “mutual help”. This actually is practised in Germany, among senior neighbours (as I visited them once). For example, one family may go for a vacation and every family in the town is responsible for clearing the snow falling onto their walkway. He seek help from his neighbours. So, one day, the other family may need help to change a light bulb. Being seniors, is not advisable to climb heights, so the family being helped before will send his son to help out in replacing the bulb (instead of calling the repairman which will cost $$).

For myself, a senior, is still busy helping out my grand-children’s needs – therapy.
If someone can help me “occasionally” when I really needed it, it will be great. In return, I can help out in home DIY or IT knowledge. In this kind of arrangement, I termed it as “mutual help” – we cannot always take and never think of giving.

  2. Hi Hew Lee, I recognise your concern from a caring point of view. But I disagree that the word “Barter” should not be used here. Why not? The Dictionary defines barter as, “To exchange goods for other things other than for money”. Profit or loss is not in the equation.

Your definition of “mutual help” applies to services only. Life would be so much better here if many people (in HDB) were to subscribe to such a philosophy. Comparing us with Germany, while far-fetched, can be a wishful incentive.

A service is usually a need while a piece of hardware is a want. Simply, one man’s trash is another’s treasure. Instead of sending it to the bin, somebody may appreciate it. If I help my old neighbour up the steps, I expect nothing in return. If he does help me on another day, it is a bonus. But if he wants my used LCD TV, I don’t feel ashamed to ask him for something in exchange. I know he has several high-res cameras. That is barter – trade or otherwise.

I am going to search my store room now.

  3. Hi Hew Lee
so interesting what you shared about mutual help in Germany. And agree it’s not barter but favours done and favours returned or helping one another.
So what is the service you may occasionally need? I may need some home DIY. LOL!

  4. Hi Daniel
Spot on for definition of barter. So have you found any white elephants in your store room yet? LOL!

  5. An attractive unused SEIKO gent’s sports watch, 100M silver, dial diameter 4.5cm, purchased around 2010, is to be cleared at only $200, which is about 50% of cost. It’s still in good working condition, and packed in a nice gift box.

I also have a few pieces of Myanmar Jade Bangle, diameter 5.5cm, and some necklaces – silver cross set with also Myanmar precious gemstone(s) such as jade, ruby and sapphire, all to be sold bet $50 – $100/pc. All items come with a nice gift box.

Big soft toy – Pooh seated, in red raincoat, blue cap and blue boots. About 1 ft height. (email for picture (unable to attach the pic). It’s a little dusty from sitting too long on the shelf.
