SHC Business Networking session, Sat 29 Mar 2014 (1100 – 1300 hrs), Hans Cafe, Upp Pickering.

network3networking1   networking2This year, we shall organise our Business Networking session as follows.  During the session, members are encouraged to discuss business opportunities, share ideas and plans, make business friends, exchange business name cards and find partners.  Rules of the Club apply.

In previous years, we had the Business Round Table, where we gather around a dinner table, at a restaurant and members take turns to introduce themselves and their businesses. Sometimes, early comers have to wait for the late comers.

This time around, participants will mingle as and when they like, and with whoever they wish to discuss with.  Participants can sit or stand anywhere. Depending on the venue, there may be pre-arranged food and drinks.  If not, you can always buy from the counter.

For all Business Networking sessions, there will be a non-refundable administrative fee, $3 per person. Unregistered participants pay $5 per person.

The coming session will be held on Sat 29 Mar 2014,  from 1100 hrs to 1300 hrs.  The place will be announced soon.  If you are interested, please register your name here. The place is now Hans Cafe, Upper Pickering.

  2. For the SILVERHAIRSCLUB Business Networking session, you are encouraged to discuss:

    1. Business opportunities and ideas you have, find like-minded partners and develop your plans.

    2. Listen to available ideas, if you have intention to participate or invest.

    3. Find other members with your required skills, experience and interests.

    4. Find something you want to do but may not have the resources. You never know.

    Keep yourself active.

  5. During the SHC Business networking session, some members would like to form a group to discuss a F&B venture. Ideas and suggestions can be wide and varied, and if you are interested, please come to the meeting, and you may find similar like-minded people. If you have a solid plan, you may also raise it during the gathering, so that other interested members can team up with you.

While I have yet to look carefully into some of the suggestions, some retired members have felt that SilverHairsClub with its size, should group together a business project so that they can participate, keeping themselves active, while able to have some financial income. Many retirees have seen their money flowing out faster than the interest they are getting. We keep our options and ideas open.

You may raise your thoughts, and suggestions here. Or you can join the Business Networking session.

  6. hi Terence I have informed you that I cant log into silverhair long ago and lost my password. I cant use Sylvia Ang at all. and whatsapp you today. You suggest I register again. So need a new ID (other than Sylvia Ang) to register at SHC again. SO I use Balloonist Sylvia Ang. Kindly register me as Balloonist Sylvia Ang and remove (sylvia ang) or see if could merge the data. thanks.

  7. I have attended a fair bit of such business networking of a larger community and more formal and professional bodies. A good moderator is needed to get the group to share and and for all to have equal air time to express their aspiration and inspiration. Some may be existing entrepreneur, some aspiring to. 90% of new business fail. So those with experience can advise those to avoid certain pitfalls.
I have evaluated a fair number of business opportunities using my own template.
Many proposal fail to pass my evaluation criteria. Still there are lot of business
“opportunities”. Interesting concept also of why not SHC start a business venture
among members. No special rule apply. The key success factor still apply in the merciless market place. I hate to see retiree losing their saving in any venture that supposed to bring more income, active or passive.

I hope all those who attend fully share their views, proposal, fears, uncertainties.

    regard

    1. Hi Leon,

Thank you for your advice. However I like to clarify the objective of this business network.

The SHC Business Networking session is intended as a meeting point whereby members find partners, share opportunities, create ideas and ways to generate some income for their SilverHairs years. I intended to hold this sessin regularly.

I have not intended this session as a meeting point whereby members start giving advice as to whether to go into business or not? It is also not intended for members to listen to the pitfalls of going into business.

This business networking session is for members who have some ideas or interests to go into business. I hope that this session will bring together likeminded individuals.

During the session, I will give participants 2-3 mins to speak what they have in mind, what they are looking for and introduce themselves; and when the group has finished their intro, all participants will disperse into smaller groups to carry on their networking. Hans Cafe at Upper Pickering is ideal for quiet small group discussions. Feel free to switch groups anytime.

Examples can include consultancy, F&B, IT training, travel, repair, house services, baking classes, etc. MLM not permitted.

$3 admin fee will be collected for this session. Food and drinks, you can buy from the counter.

      1. As a clarification, and our relaxation with some of our policies. The SHC Business Networking sessions, which I intend to hold month, will be for the purpose of discussing business.

However, the Club’s forum is not for promoting personal business, company names, URL and selling.

Only Corporate members may promote their business and invite members to participate in their products and services. For more info, read about Corporate members in the forum.

  9. An interesting business discussion came up. And that is how SHC as a Club can generate funds and be self sustainable.

The first suggestion came up because SHC is financially not viablel, even though we have been operating 8 years. The suggestion was to collect membership, on a figure around $20. Sure, if the Club has funds, running activities would be a lot easier. Yes, I would hope to hear further your thoughts. However, personally, I am against the idea of collecting membership fees. Two reasons – collecting membership is too complex and SHC is unlike the many physical clubs in Singapore. And I am too lazy to think further this direction. Let’s keep the options open if someone likes to draw up new boundaries. In the meantime, SHC remains a free membership and a social virtual platform on the World Wide Web, where EOs and ECs run activities for Seniors.

Secondly, while the Club is virtual, there are costs involved in maintaining it. If you have been tracking the movement of SHC in the last 9 years, you will know that SilverHairsClub.com is owned by SilverHairs Enterprise Pte Ltd. I dont plan to fund SHC costs indefinitely; although I like the idea of making SilverHairs Enterprise Pte Ltd profitable. With today’s group, I did not draw any firm ideas, although over the next few years, I intend to make SHE profitable as I plan to go into retirement. If you would like to be involved with this process, do contact me or join us at the next SHC Business Networking Session.

    Thank you for the ideas.

    1. When Kairos Yu told the Business Networking session that he owns a medical supplies retail business, it reminds me that there are other members with such businesses too.

What strikes me as a possible self help and as well as a way to keep track of our blood pressure, glucose or ketones, is to monitor these figures monthly. I thought if we have someone who would bring along a blood pressure meter and blood glucose meter at every monthly gathering, members can have the BP and glucose levels checked. That person can also keep records for us, as many people are “the no worries type”.

For the service, we can pay that person $2.50, covers the BP and glucose equipment, strip, effort and time. Of course, not everybody needs to run this test every month, only for those who need too.

Tracking Blood pressure, blood pressure and glucose levels are life and death issues. If there is someone among us who can provide this service, please let me know.
