Monthly walk – PipeLine Ramble 2, Sat 2 Aug 2008

Date: 02 August 2008 (Saturday)

Start Time: we shall start the walk at 4.15pm sharp! Do plan to arrive punctually.
Duration:  3 hours.

Meeting Point:
Bus-stop at Farrer Court, Farrer Road (near Holland Road/Queensway, not Bukit Timah)

Getting There:
Buses available along both sides of Farrer Road: 48, 93, 153, 165, 174, 186, 855 and 961 (check it out!  Need guidance, do drop me an email with your contact, it is easier to explain over the phone).

Leaders for this walk:  JeffreyLim & ChristinaCL Chan.

We did the 1st ramble "PLR-I" in April 2008; the trial ended at Farrer Court.  So, in continuation the ramble shall begin from where it ended………

The terrain is undulating.  It is not the “usual walk in the park”. There are some rough sections.
It is exploratory. It as a Mini Trek!

This 2nd segment provides some excitement as there are at least 2 obstacles to challenge perhaps, our spirit of boldness; a leap/step of faith into the unknown!emoticon

One challenge offers a short "slide" down the side of the huge pipe, then "lift" or "heave" oneself up  4-feet wall; your very own HAND POWER or strength is required together with a little aid from our macho guys!   emoticon

Ladies "meinui" — dispense with the "genteel"; be ‘tom-boy’!  It shall see you through! it sure did for me!

Guys "suike"–  an extension of your hands or perhaps a lap-stool, surely comes ‘handy’       hehe                    I shall say no more… let the suspense hype up!

Let me assure you that the challenges are not as difficult as it seems; besides there are OPTIONS for you to take the easier route.

The walk shall end at Turf City where a variety food is available – Indonesian/Japanese; seafood restaurants, Muslim/Chinese eating houses; pizzas; cafes; etc.
I recommend the famous Curry Garden.  They serve chicken briyani, thosai, dum briyani, masala chicken…
& fish head curry($16) – one of their signature dishes, the half-hour wait was worth it, so SEDAP!

Register here.    :D

*** Those who wish to have the fish head curry(4pax to share) please tell me as I will try to book in advance.

NOTE:
1)  If the mozzies always like you, do bring the insect sprays.

2)  There are no ‘toilet’ facilities & no shelter from raindrops.

3)  Complimentary half-hourly free shuttle bus services is available from Turf City to Clementi & Toa Payoh Interchange.

Stay cool!  Be cool!    emoticon     C ya!

Background of this Trial:

What is this PipeLine Ramble?"

Most of you would know that a water pipeline runs from Johor to Singapore but have anybody thought to trace the route"?

The entire trail of approx 21 km will take around 8 to 9hours! We had intended to introduce this trail in 3 separate segments but after the 1st ramble; I think we will need more time not because of the "km" but to truly enjoy this exciting, challenging trail in 4 segments.  Each part of the route has a different terrain and each opens up a part of Singapore seldom seen. The 1st segment was from Pearl’s Hill to Farrer Road, approx 7 km.

  2. Hi Christina;

I would like to join in he walk, but the two challenges frightens me a bit, especially to heave myself up with my hand power. Is there an alternative way to overcome this wall?

    Please count me in.

    Thanks

  3. Hi Christina Chan,

I LOVE challenges esp. the cycling at Pengarang, hope there will another to Desaru soon.

I will join you in this ” RAMBO ” challenging walk along the pipelne and hunt for Mas S but have to find out 1st. where is Farrer Court.

……. There are no ‘toilet’ facilities.
NO problem , I will bring along a few plastic bags and do it in the bushes in case of emergency.

Tim and Wong KT ,pls.look out for me. Ha! Ha!

  4. Hi Christina ,

And I missed out my favourite food.

I would like to join you for the fish head curry.
The last time I had was at Muthu’s curry.

  5. Hi Chris,
Glad that you notice I’m a regular. Credit is due to yours and the team’s hard work in organising monthly walks which are enjoyable, fun and a chance to chat with others, not to metion the walking exercise.

On the upcoming walk, I’ll be taking the bus travelling from Lornie Road. On Farrer Road do I wait at the bus stop facing Blocks 2,3.4 or at the next bus stop after Spanish Village which faces block 8. Please advise.

Forgot to metion that I’m also interested in the curry fish head. Thanks. Cheers

  6. For those who consider the 4-foot wall obstacle too challenging, bring a foldable stool along. Jeffrey & Christina won’t mind. ha ha ha

  7. WOW!!! This seems so challenging…not sure if i can make it. Would like to give it a try…I love the fish head curry.. Pls register me.

  8. Aiyoyo mati lah, where is this meeting point (Farrer Court)Bus-stop for this Sat walk? My house got bus no.153, how long is the journey huh? where to alight ????? yo…I better go together with my same kampong buddy, Melissa.

    Ah Nee

  9. “…….better go together with my same kampong buddy, Melissa.”. Well, ANee, if yr kamopong buddy isnt available, go look for yr childhod bf kampong ducky Munmunkia and re-live the yesteryears when you 2 waggled thru the streets from 6 mile to golden mile………..enjoying, along the way, curry head fish and coconut head chicken.

  10. Thanks for all who had registered; indicated “dinner” too.
Please note that I dun own that stall hor, I hope they are open for biz this Sat so you guys can sample their food.

  11. #14 Charles, foldable stool? good suggestion but it will be more for resting. The ledge might be too narrow for the stool how as I had indicated, LAP-stool would be better hehe

hey, we need you macho guys esp for this obstacle… or perhaps mmmh

  12. Dear All,

no worries lah! the obstacles are not as daunting… we SHCians very helpful 1.

#7 King Seng, always an option! there is a easier route so need not ‘heave up’ the 4-feet wall.

  13. #23 Ah Nee, no headache lah, I think Melissa knows her way around. If not, I’ll see if I remember to look for the map, scan in & have it emailed to you.
    Also, check website: sbstransit.com.sg

Bus service #153: alight at Spanish Village bus stop & cross over, meet at Farrer court bus stop.

  14. Dear Participants,

those who did not indicate “dinner” I’ll assume that you prefer other selection of food at Turf City instead of the fish head curry. :D

    Thanks much, ChristinaCL Chan

  15. ,,,,#7 King Seng, always an option! there is a easier route so need not ‘heave up’ the 4-feet wall.

No problem for me. I just leap over the wall.

Hope I will not miss Pipeline Ramble 3 again.

    Appreciate your hard work!

    Veronique

  19. Hi Christina,

So…sorry, Ah Nee, Susan, Aaron and myself cannot make it for the walk. Kindly, cancel the curry fish head for all of us including Molly and Ronald L. Thanks.

  25. Hi Chris,

Thousand apologies, I need to cancel this walk as well as the fish head curry. Manage to secure an NDP ticket which I’ve being longing for….you know this ticket is hard to come by.

    Cheers
    Mike and Alicia

  27. Hi Christina CL Chan and Jeffrey Lim,
A big THANK YOU for organising this walk. As always it was interesting and well-organised. I look forward to the next ‘Pipeline Ramble 3″. Perhaps we can then follow the pipeline to JB for dinner?

  28. Hi Jeffrey & Chris,

A short note to thank both of you and say we enjoyed today’s walk very much. It was great fun. Would suggest that you combine Rambles “3” & “4” and let’s rambo from Turf City to Woodlands (or even, JB as Charles suggested) in October.

  29. Christina & Jeffrey

Thanks for the well-organised “Pipeline 2 walk” . EVen I was “Force” to go , but I enjoyed it very much (haha)

I am already looking forward to the 3th walk and will be too happy to have dinner at JB and we can shop till we drop.

    Good Night

    Karen Thio

** Bobby … we will go down to Turf City for Ice kacang again

  30. Thanks to all the organisers of the pipeline walks.

if only we had more time crisscrossing the pipelines,it would be more FUN and CHALLENGING.

Thanks also for recommending us to eat the Fish Head Curry at Turf City.

This curry without coconut milk is not only more HEALTHY but the spices they used actually enhance the flavour. MO TAK THENG! yummy!

  31. Christina & Jeffrey

Thanks so much for organizing such an interesting ramble walk along the pipeline.

I thoroughly enjoyed the walk as well as meeting the wonderful people.

Great Job! Let’s make the next one soon, OK!

  32. Hi Christina & Jeffrey

Thank you very much for organising such a challenging and yet very interesting walk.

I thought I would not be able to make it, but with encouragement from members I made it at last.

I look forward to the the third and final segment of the PipeLine rambal.

    Very good work done.

  33. #49 AliciaSoh & Mike, if you remember the trail do 1 more time. We might repeat this particular trail next year… we shall see :D Thanks for your presence.

    Warm regards, ChristinaCL Chan

  34. #50 CharlesC, Thank YOU! for your kind thoughts. Hey, didnt see you do the 1st challenge leh. the PLR 3 will be on 11Oct… make your calendar! as we MIGHT take your suggestion to have dinner across the border hehehe

  35. #52 KarenT, let’s say you could’nt resist some “sweet temptation” hahahah The trail proved itself! I saw it in your smile :D Thank you.

  36. #53, 54, 55 Steven, thank YOU! I know you truly enjoyed this healthy version of FHC as I heard you said it a couple of times :D and the walk. Nice having you. Did you do the challenge? ai ya, I didnt see it… Did you leap over or walk over huh?

  37. #56 PatsyL, you bet! the next walk is on 13Sep & the PipeLine Ramble 3 will be on 11Oct.

Our monthly walks are held every 2nd Saturday of each month.

Look forward to seeing you again.

    Warm regards, ChristinaCL Chan

  38. #57 KingSeng… steady lah! Since the 1st walk that you came, you have built the pace.

Show the pix to your children, they will all go “wow” seeing you “webbing” thru the fence! and up the steep slope, all in 1 breathe!

  39. On 1st Aug Friday night, I was told that 6 had withdrawn, I thought mmmmmmh the trail must be too tough & daunting after all. Perhaps, we should shelf the PLR 3+4 ):

On Saturday afternoon, I was pleasantly surprised to see the more than expected no. of participants — 31! Several came without signing up (naughty nice ones!) & amongst these were new members Rose Lim, Jenny Hong; as well as return of some regulars …see them in the soon uploaded photos.

Most of them took to the challenges with “gusto”! which includes webbing thru the fence; which I had purposely left out mentioning in my post teeheheheh It was FUN! right guys

My heart was greatly warmed seeing: fellow SHCians helping 1 another thru the challenges; the beaming faces after we have completed the challenges.

I was surprised too that we finished the walk half-an-hour earlier than estimated… well done guys!

It was indeed a wonderful Saturday afternoon well spent!
Thank YOU to each of you in helping to make this Rambling memorable.

As CharlesW said, we had said several times to take a long long break, but we never get to do so…. because of these “BEAMING FACES” which says much!

How about…. be more Active? Join us as EOs for the Monthly walks. we sure need more help and ALSO share with you the Gladness!

    a HEARTFELT THANK YOU GUYS!
