MJ Club

The  primary intention of this  MJ (not Michael Jackson fan club)club is to link like minded members who like to play this game for fun or token bets.

If you feel uneasy responding in the forum you can drop me  a private email  and I can discretely link you up with members in the same vicinity with similar time availability and stakes range.

We have 2 ladies in Jurong area and 2 ladies in the Katong/Kembangan and myself in the Bedok area.

The popular stakes range at the moment is 20 cents/40 cents. However if you are interested in the 10 cents/20 cents or 25 cents/50 cents range do indicate what you prefer. We are not encouraging it but if you have no partners to play with in the higher range do make a request and I will advise if I can connect you.

Please indicate if you can only play on weekendsFriday nights,Saturdays and Sundays only) or if retired or housewife that you can play during the day.

Please  advise if you will  want to play with ladies only  leaving poor little old me out of the picture!

Please indicate if your location is able to host the game for free?

When you respond please advise name/sex/area/stakes preferred or within acceptable range/time availability on weekends only or anytime/all ladies game condition/hosting capability.

My email is at insiders111@yahoo.com.sg

MJ is a healthy  activity  that is highly recommended  for the Silverhairs age group to prevent the onset of dementia. If you are interested in learning  I can try to get fellow members to teach you and play games with no stakes involved just for fun.The stakes involved may not be enough for your winnings to pay for you taxi fare(if you do take a taxi) but you will have the thrill(cheap) and boasting rights.I hope this posting meets with Big Boss’s approval.

P.S. Robert…any MJ playes in Bishan area?

  1. Hi Patrick-K
“MJ helps to prevent onset of dementia” – it’s a fact.

I’m interested in MJ only for its mental health benefits. My play ability is elementary and I rarely play.

I play for points. Can consider very small stakes and would like to play with people at the same level of MJ ‘competency’.
(An experienced player would ‘die’ of frustrations playing with beginners!)

I’m from the Serangoon area. Would appreciate it if you could match me with players in my ‘category’. :)

Tks for initiating this MJ club.

  2. I already have a response from a lady in the East (Pasir Ris area) who is in the 10 cents/20 cents stakes range and is willing to play host(on request basis) with no restrictions on Men players and available during the day on weekdays as well(subject to availibility).

  3. Ref #1 Jassmine Teo
Pls respond to all categories of info requested ie
is your home available for hosting, don’t mind playing with the male species and presume you want to play in 10cents/20 cents category. Are you willing to consider 20cents 40 cents category if there are insufficient people in 10/20 cents category.I also presume you are a weekend player.

For the 10cents/20cents category the 5 double limit will be $1.60/$3.20

For the rest who respond please also drop me your hp nbr thru direct email(Jassmine I have your nbr already so it’s OK)

  4. Patrick-K, I dont think I fancy you doing the MJ, or what they call the Massage Job, on me, knowing how difficult to make you stop. But shd you decide one day to do the BJ, haha, I have someone, rather smthg, for you, nvm that Steven-C’s pet dog is gone.

  5. Hi Patrick

From relationship advisor to mahjong organiser! So versatile! :-) I am in the same category as Jassmine Teo and around the same area. Unable to host. No difference in sexes. Only on weekends’ nights. Email me if you need further info.

  6. Although I had 2 wins and 1 loss over the weekend fellow MJ players can testify(impeccable witnesses who are senior members) that I am poor or average at this game(can’t be good in everything but do have wide interests). The truth is that I have an awful memory but I do enjoy the game and seasoned players like Danz won’t have the patience(due to my slowness) to sit on the same table as me.Thankfuly I was not labelled slow by the 20cents/40 cents group.I guess Lady Luck was with me over the weekend.

  7. You can’t have a home for free. Usually ‘coffee’ money is encourage.

I am keen to play 30/60 cents up to 5/1. Anything less than that i need strong stimulants to keep me awake!

    Danz

  8. Ref #7 Danz

What is the amount of coffee money did you guys regularly collected for 50 cents/$1.00 game per round of 4 winds.

What do you recommend to collect for a 10/20 cents game
    …a 20/40 cents game a 50/$1.00 game at half price(ie 25/50 cents) a 30/60 cents game.Please advise.

  9. Leave it to the host. Some host will not charge realising that the kakis come from afar.

Some hosts will even go to the extend of providing coffee and snack free just for the pleasure of fellowship.

Mahjong may be a cure for dementia but be aware that it is also a test of character. You will know your friend very well after 4 winds!

    Danz

  10. Patrick Khoo.

Thanks for starting this thread. :-)

I’m interested in Jassmine Teo’s ‘category’ of MJ, either playing for points only or with very small stakes. For me, mahjong is a game, not a competition or money making event.

I think if someone were to host, then it’s only fair that the other players contribute in some ways. They could bring some snacks or contribute to pay for drinks and snacks.

Another approach could be to put all the winnings (or losses) into a common ‘pot’ and then adjourn for a coffee or food later.

After all, the idea is to get together and exercise our minds, apart from socialising, although there ARE people who play to make money, which I’m not into. It does not foster the ties of friendship.

So, like minded people, let’s MJ. :-)

  11. “Anything less than that i need strong stimulants to keep me awake!” Haha, where is Joy?

“You will know your friend very well after 4 winds!”. Without a doubt, yr nose must be hard of smelling. For me, the moment he/she breaks the first wind, I’ll wing and take off for dear life………………

  12. Hello Patrick Khoo,

Upon a fellow SHCian’s advise, is good to pick up this indoor game (brain teaser) in case I no longer have the stamina to do outdoor adventures. Please enrol me in an elementary course with those who are slow players or beginners. Need to enrich regularly otherwise I will mistaken “1 unit Bamboo” as the “Flower bird” again and game happily without a passport. How to host? I don’t even have a mahjong set and a mahjong table. Let’s me learn more about – the rules, winds and counting of “tai”. Aiyo, I am lost.

    Dan,
Will you have the time to conduct intermediate stage and care to explain and play strategically

I am residing around Bedok area and agreed with JasmineT and MaryC philosophy.

    Cheers

  13. This posting really made my day. Most interested to join the MJ Club. Can play for points, money, or pool money and go makan. Nowadays, very hard to find kaki for small stakes like 10/20 or even 20/40….so count me in for such stakes. Cannot find kaki, so have been playing on-line MJ. Am staying in the East, so prefer locations in the East, but if hands itchy can also consider other locations. Can sometimes offer my place too, subject to certain conditions like husband out of town and exam period over. Preferably Friday/Saturday nights. However, after Oct 9, any night also can……exam period over for the year…..finally free! Wah, I sound so desperate!

Must now go to store room and “spring clean” the MJ table and MJ set and locate the chips (it’s been ages since MJ was last played at my place).

Rene Leong/Jasmine Teo/Mary Chan – don’t worry friendly MJ players will have patience. After a few sessions, you will have no problems. I was like that in the beginning too…….only that time not so lucky – nobody played just for points (unheard of)- had to “pay tuition” to learn MJ…..not like now with SHC can find socialising MJ players……..so count me in for this MJ Club.

  14. Thanks for the warm response. You guys and ladies make me feel useful and wanted again after all my recent boo-boos.
For the beginners don’t fret we will get you to observe the 10/20 cents group and learn the basics of completing the game.

With more experience you can learn from the experts like Danz(hopefully they have the patience to teach us).For once I declare I am a novice in this subject unlike the other subjects.

Still don’t know if somebody is pulling my leg but Newpaper might intewrview(despite my poor start) me for this Satruday’s match between Chelsea and Man Utd.I shall verify this and talk about it in the soccer advisory column.

    Ref #13 Ivan
Want to join the party ?…or maybe we should arrange a MJ pyjamas party just for you.Let us know!

Hee, somebody said this, not me. I only abridege it.

See, what is innocuous can become suggestive just by removing some words, adding none, and not changing the order of the sentences.

  16. To Tim Liu – May have met you at the last gathering at Hans Cafe on Sep 9, but don’t quite remember your face. However, you make new members like me wary of posting comments, after what you have done to my comments. Either that or you got nothing else better to do while having your breakfast. You do this with words………can’t imagine what you would do with pictures!

  17. Patrick-K @# 3

I’m unable to offer my place but will try to help find a suitable venue.

Is there a member who is eligible to book a Changi Holiday flat? I understand the rental is very low.

To all who are interested in the MJ club, let’s keep our fingers crossed.

    Cheers,

  18. Ref #16 Tim Liu and #17 Caroline Sit

Caroline do not be alarmed as Tim is one of the endangered species in SHC,an oddball,a buffoon, our official court jester.

To be fair,I can vouch for him that he did it in jest, much like Lily’s welcome for Nancy.Treat it as ragging or welcome initiation.Taken in this light I can see that I was a little harsh with poor Lily(my humble apologies) and a little over protective towards Nancy(at least I am neutral or try to be by dealing with issues and not side with people because of who they are).If Tim can do it to Caroline I will be practising double standards so Nancy and Caroline do take it on the chin in the right spirit.

I have 3 suggestions;ignore him, shoot him(preferably in the back and at the side)and return sniper fire with humour and make fun of him in return or 3 …get a white knight (like myself…even for me it’s tough to manhandle him) to do the job for you.

I hope I don’t get shot by the 4 protagonists that I have mentioned.Otherwise my one shoe collection will grow larger.I know I won’t get any shoes from Tim as he wears cha-kiaks and I know he won’t throw them at me either because he loves me or he loves his cha-kiaks more.

I trust the 4 of you will enjoy the piece and understand SHC culture better.Tim is priveleged as he does get away with murder sometimes!

  19. Caroline Sit.
I don’t think I’ve met you. Thanks for your reassurance. I’m glad there’s someone who thinks like me about MJ. I’d love to have a game with you.

    Rene Leong.
You sound like you already know MJ but haven’t had much chance to polish your skills. Perhaps we could get together for a game too.

    Jassmine Teo.
If you don’t mind playing with a novice, why don’t the 4 of us have a game then?

    Patrick Khoo.
So we have our kakis now. On with mj then. :-)

  20. Ref #20 Mary Chan
Mary has kindly consented to play host on 27Sep 3.00pm-9.00pm at pasir Ris area.No fees to be charged.Participants are encouraged to bring either bottled drinks(coke for me..Ha Ha Ha),pastries or curry puff for 4 or tidbits. The stakes will be 10/20 cents at 5 double limit. The 3 mentioned people please confirm your availability to Mary direct and cc me or contact me by email or hp and I will co-ordinate with Mary.Mary can’t sit still for long hours and will need replacements either from the rookies who are prepared to loose but who knows if Lady luck smiles on you or myself as last resort standby. If there are 10/20cents players they can be on preferred standby with me as last priority.
Mary has kindly consented to invite the rookies and i will bring an extra set and chips and play on large coffee table(anybody has spare portable MJ table or spare MJ table?)Any senior Mj players care to volunteer to train them.If not they have to learn basic gaming skills from me(very rudimentary poorly qualified so looking for better instructors).

  21. Caroline-S, with Patrick-K’s #19, I am placated, vindicated and….constipated, thanks for saying them all so kindly. For that, the next time you will get to keep my chakiaks after carrying them for my next outing.

Carol-S, just for a few minutes, forget that you were the writer of the original post, which was a good piece showing enthusiam and excitement to friends sharing yr hobby. Then read the tattered one…if you were not the writer of the first post, will you not say what a idiot he is and break into a smile………?

I dont do anything to pictures, not unless you teach me..starting maybe with how to hang foto on lorry heads?

Heee, if Mary-C doesnt shut her door on me, I shd be there not as a rookie but as the bookie. My odds offer will be very good.

  22. Ref #15: Patrick, if I join the MJ Club, I surely kenah han-tam until boey-jin-choo. Bcos don’t know how to play. With the current financial crisis, can’t affort Tuition fee also leh! Maybe I shld just wear the pyjamas and serve tea/cofi/snacks while you people ken-ka-liao on the MJ table……..

  23. Tim Liu.
I won’t shut my door on anyone, but do let me know if you will be turning up. Firstly, because my apartment is not big. Secondly, I would prefer not to have too much noise and distraction when I play.

    Patrick Khoo.
I don’t mind another table, but I don’t have the space for it. If you want to ‘teach’ the game, you will have to use my coffee table or dining table, but be warned. They have got glass tops and will be very noisy and may possibly get broken or chipped if someone got too excited. So you will be liable. Hee hee.
Also, can you bring lots of MJ papers to act as padding?

  24. Rene, Jassmine and Caroline Sit.
I don’t mind playing with money, but wouldn’t mind playing for points either.
Let me know if you are keen to make a table so I can ‘prepare’ my apartment to welcome you, hee hee.

  25. This is from Mary-C to tim :

    “Tim Liu.
I won’t shut my door on anyone, but do let me know if you will be turning up. Firstly, because my apartment is not big. Secondly, I would prefer not to have too much noise and distraction when I play. ”

The following is tim’s reply to Mary-C :

Marry (if you hv a) Chance.
I won’t shut my mouth on anyone, but do let me know if you wont be turned on. Firstly, because my appetite is not big. Secondly, I would prefer not to have too much poise from you and discretion from me when I play.

    Heeehee……………

I definitely am talking about MJ. Don’t know about Tim. Certain words can make his brain go southwards and he turns gibberish. Everyone knows that by now. Don’t you?

    #29. Daniel. You too?

  27. Hi Mary Chan
Tks for the invite, but the 3-9p.m. time on Sat 27 Sept is not suitable for me. I’ll support the MJ club’s ‘inaugural’ game by sparing my MJ table if Patrick-K is prepared to cart it from Serangoon to Pasir Ris.

    Patrick-K
My MJ table is not foldable but can fit into the back seat of a sedan. It’s felt-lined and in pristine condition. Take good care of it, hor.

    Cheers,

  29. Mary Chan – Am not able to make it for Sep 27 (have prior appointment). If I can host MJ at my place on Fri, Oct 10 (6.30 pm onwards), would you be interested? Also, invitation extended to Rene Leong/Jasmine Teo/Patrick Khoo.
Let’s start with 1 table first….or else my neighbours will think that I’m starting a gambling den.

  30. Hi Mary Chan @25

    Thanks much for your invitation.
Per JasmineT and Caroiine-S responses, think Sept 27 MJ session will not materialise.
Should we have a chance to play, can we warm up with points first then follow by small stake when I am more certain with the rules?

    Caroline Sit
Thanks for your invitation too. Which part of the East are you residing?
Oct 10 is a Friday. Not too sure whether I can join you.
Please email rene.leong@gmail.com for your address and exchange of contact no.

    Cheers
    Rene

  31. “…….. I don’t mind playing with points……….” Neither do I mind.

The human anatomy is very interesting. Lying on the back, the points stand up nicely. I am sure playing for 20 cents or 40 cents is a steal and they’ll be many takers – those who know as well as those who dont know how to play MJ.

  32. Hi Caroline-S
Tks for the invite. Wish I’m from the East. Most MJ ‘novices’ seem to hail from the East.

It’s a big rush for me to get to Tampines on Fri 10 Oct, so am not sure if I should make the dash. If you have the required no. of players, do carry on without me. If there’s a “3 minus 1” situation, then I’ll consider making the big dash. Nyway, I think there’ll be enough players.

Keep me in the loop. My email: kdaae2005@hotmail.com

    Cheers

  33. Dear Patrick,
Apologies for my ignorance – Interested in knowing more abt MJ. Any diff between Tarot & MJ. Just got “hooked” on Tarot – 1st session on 9th Sept but day & time not suitable so has “abort” it.

Dont mind joining MJ – sounds interesting. Prefer Friday nites. Am staying @ Toa Payoh so prefer places nearby if possible such as Bishan, AMK. Can consider town area such as Orchard, Novena.

Do keep me in the loop. Send to my personal email : pearlynn_tan@pacific.net.sg

    Cheers :)

  34. Hi,
Oh! MJ is mahjong session – now I know the diff!! Haa! I’m a novice at this game. Usually play for fun & stake very small – each win is just $1 with 50cts for “flower”, “animal”, etc… dont play 20/40, $1/$2, etc.. Usually play during CNY with family members. No pref on sexes!!

If I’m still welcome, let me know. Hee!

  35. ATTN all MJ players.

I will compile the compatible players(price/location) list by tonight. Will all those who have responded please give the requested details directly by email if you have not done so.

After I compile the list I intend to email the full details of your data to each other in the list.If u consent or object pls respond privately by email(email addr in 1st posting at the top of this page) directly to me.Initially for each category I will arrange the 1st game. After that I suggest you contact each other directly to co-ordinate the games. For those in 20/40 cents category don’t forget to invite as 4th choice or 1st reserve!

  36. Hi Patrick

I am a newbies, joined 2 days ago, still trying to figure out your website on posting.

I am interested in learning MJ. Have tried a couple of times, really very raw and need to polish up if I want to join in to have some fun and interaction with SHC.

I dont mind playing with gals/guys,small stakes and living in the east/kembangan area . Available to play on weekends public holidays (eve oso boleh).

    hope to hear from u!

    thanks

  37. Rene Leong.
Nice to see you again last night. I wasn’t able to have a chat with you about MJ as I had to hurry off. Are you still keen?
I believe you are still working, so you can only play on weekends right?

Meeting up last night made me want to start MJ again.

    Anyone else interested?

  38. Hi MaryC @# 45

I’m interested in playing MJ for points, but so far no opportunity to play yet, so am playing chess and learning CTT instead.

    Cheers,
