  1. Thanks Terence, this is really efficient. Just tried registering for an event and the response was almost immediate. Does this mean that I need to do multiple smses to register for the various events? Would be nice if I just need to make a selection and send it off at a go. Asking too much, am I?

  2. Hi Amy,

I think the system is pretty smart, in that it can register your different interest kakis. However, it will still send you a response of each of the registration. So, if you register for 5 kakis group, it will acknowledge 5 times.

  3. Hi James,

On meeting the criteria, the EO simply needs to sms me, in the initial stages. At a later date, the EO can sms the SMS manager.

It’s really up to the organiser. For example, the SMS content, 120 characters, can look like this:
I am going for Hi-tea social dance at Orchard hotel this Sat 28 Jan 2009 7pm. Cost is $12. Interested, James 9123-4567.

  4. I’ve been trying to get a SCUBA diving group going but to date I’ve only identified 3 other divers. I have also thought of a sailing group too but again there are only two other sailors in SHC as far as I know of. We’re going to be a pretty small group and perhaps we can combine the fishing group into a sea sports group. After all when you’re out on a boat you can dive, fish etc.

Nice timing, for me, at least. I am now free from teaching for the next few weeks and can join in some of the activities, if there are any materialising.
    Thanks

  6. Hi Oi Cheng,

This is Geok Suan trying to find out more for my friend Nelly Soh who had recently become a SHC member. She cannot get into our Comments page becose she hasn’t got her password from admin. Similarly, Annie Goh hasn’t too. They want to read the comments.

How can admin@silverhairs.com help them? Please send their password etc to them @ their e-mail address.

    Thank you.

    Geok Suan

  7. Hi Geok Suan,

The password is given by the SilverHairsClub.com system. First, go to Shortcuts, which is on the left of the website. Then look for Register. This is it.

However, if you still cannot read the comments, please write to admin@silverhairsclub.com. Have fun.

  8. The SMS system which alerts kakis of programs, organised by members, is growing rapidly.

Event organisers wishing to invite the different kakis groups, should have at least 6 months of membership, or is a familiar face at monthly gatherings and the club’s forum.

For information, every member has a registered name eg SHC608 Jeannie Lim. The 608 indicates the joining date of Aug 2006.

You may start using this SMS alert service wef Jan 2009.

  9. Hi Jeffrey #7

Last month I tried for the 1st time Scuba Diving and thoroughly enjoyed it – such that I am planning to take up the PADI licence. I checked and would probably take the course in Malaysia some time 1st quarter 2009 during off peak period.

The cost is approx M$1600 – S$1800 all inclusive: gear, lunch, transport (ferry etc) and lessons. If I take it with the same company, I might be able to skip the pool lesson as I have done one dive, but who know few months later I will “panick” again and will have to start in a pool. It would be a kind of short holiday at the same time.

I understand in Singapore it will cost much more.

Perhaps next year we can arrange something. There may be other members who might be interested to take up the course too.

    Cheers
    Kathryn

I’m a bit out of touch with diving courses in Singapore but my guess is that it should be around $500. But of course if you take the course in Singapore, you don’t have to factor in the travelling costs.

There are a few qualified but ‘rusty’ divers in SHC and I’m getting a friend to organise a refresher course. If they go for it then we might have enough divers to do a dive trip.

Diving season starts in April and I’m planning a trip tentatively over the Easter weekend. I’ll keep you in the loop.

  11. Hi Maggie,

Be patient. Not only is it pretty dumb but it can be lazy as well. It can take a few hours as I found out yesterday. But I got a reply in the end. Good Luck!

  12. Hi Bobby,

Please feel free to ask anything you like about the SMS system on this forum. Your questions may interest other members on this forum.

The SMS basically involves getting a sim card from one of Singapore telcos. The SIM card goes into a SMS card reader, which is connected to a PC computer. The SMS software, which is programmed on the PC, talks to the SIM card reader, receives and send messages from users like yourself. Unfortuntely, the SMS software is only as smart as what is programmed onto it. Very much, like an email system.

Let me know if you have queries.

  16. When you join a Kakis group, and you receive an alert to join an event, please reply to the person and the telephone number in the SMS.

Do not reply to the system. It is stupid, and wont acknowledge.
