  1. Helo Terence..
Im not raising my hands hor!..but please register me…im coming…got EO or takde, the show must go on rite?!..
    Alamak!..no need EO lah…everybody can come & mingle..have drinks..& cakap2 lah…boleh tak?..hehe

  2. Hi,

I tend to agree with Nor that it may not be necessary to
have an EO for each monthly mtg, otherwise you will be
    shouting for one every time.
As long as you call for one, just let the meeting goes on.
Only when we need some1 to plan a special pgm, then we shd
get an EO to raise his/her hand or assign.
We can have an EO to plan something special like every quarter.

What I think the monthly mtgs need are some ambassadors for
the club to meet newcomers. Several newbies I talked to
said they are ‘lost’ if they don’t know anybody there and if
they do, they tend to ‘stick’ to only those they know.

My suggestion would be to have a team of ambassadors who
are active with the clubs for at least 6 mths. All they
need to di is to introduces new members to
the rest of the groups. It’s an easy job for them and
    requires no effort or planning.

  3. Hi

As discussed with Terence, I will be the EO for February’s monthly gathering. Our theme will be board games. Chess, Scrabble, Sor Tai Tee, Gin Rummy and Rummikub are some suggested board games.

I need a team leader for each game. Do let me know if anyone would like to lead a team and also do some coaching. I agree with Terence that getting members to come and play is a good form of building rapport among members.

Almost everyone may be able to play one of the board games. This way nobody will be left out. This manner of meeting may do away with what James Tan suggested having to have ambassadors among us as everyone will be referred to a group.

Hi Nor and James, thanks for your responses. We are open for suggestion from member of the floor, let’s kickstart to a better and fulfilling New Year!

Here’s wishing all a blessed Lunar New Year.

    Dan

  4. Thank you Dan for raising your hand, and be the EO for the Wed Feb 25, 2009 monthly gathering.

Yes, and the focus will be on Board games. If you are strong in one board game, and can lead one board game continuous throughout the year, raise your hand, and those who would like to join you, can meet you at the monthly gathering. In this way, everybody gets to know one another better in ther group. You have to have some staying power to keep the board game alive through the year.

So, leaders, put your hands up first. Learners and players, plse wait for the leaders to surface.

Thanks Dan, and may I wish all the Board gamers active minds and active hands.

  5. Hi Dan,
May I include my card game called “Golf”? I’d love to teach it to those who are keen to learn.
I love Scrabble too, but don’t think I can manage to handle two games. Besides, the Scrabble set I have is big and heavy and I don’t relish carrying it to and fro.
So, can I put up my hand for the card game?
    Thanks

  6. Hi Mary,

Thanks for the support. “Golf” will be included as one of the board game. I want to include “Wei Gi” and “Bridge” games. Anyone keen to lead may come forward and share with us. I will lead the chess group unless anyone can volunteer to take over.

Those of you who are not participating in any of the board games may still come. There will be other member around to meet up with you.

    Dan

  7. Hi Dan,

I like to suggest games that you can play on the internet with Yahoo messenger. It can help some who wants to play with others who are free without having all over Singapore just to have a game.
For a start I can show games like ‘Word racer’ a new version of scrabble and scores are automatically updated along with timing for each player. For those who have enjoyed scrabble you will be amazed at words that you never realised can be constructed with just a few simple alphabets. \
I will bring along 1 laptop and a mobile router for those who are keen and they need to bring their laptops laptop and also have Yahoo messenger installed and have an acoount. Other games available are ‘checkers, reversi, chess, snooker, and many many more.

    Cheers

  8. Hi Ronald Wie,

That would be fantastic! Do bring your laptop and router along. I am sure there are those keen to learn ‘Word racer”.

I will also be bringing my laptop and mini laptop for those who want to learn chess online.

    Dan

  9. Hi Dan @#7,

I had a set of Wei Gi (which I bought long time ago in Japan) but I have forgotten how to play it.

Are you able to play this game? And teach it?

    Thanks!

    Warmest Regards,
    Patsy

  10. Hi Patsy,

Sorry I have not a clue how to play
wei Gi. Let’s hope someone will come forward to teach us.

Wei Gi look like the game of Othello. Anyone keen to play Othello?

    Dan

  11. Wowee! A games meeting… Please register me although I am not a board games enthusiast.

I can see some playing chess, some checkers… some checking out the chess… some puzzling over the Wei Gi, some yelling and squabbling over Scrabble, some trying to play Golf without clubs or green.

Where’s Ah Liu, is he bringing his casino along?

Like Nor, I am not raising up two of my hands… I only do that to dry out my armpits after putting on deodorant! Otherwise “peng sun”!

  12. Howdy, Kenneth my ah Tan? Didnt go visiting yr seniors for angpows but came in here to pow wow huh?

Seriously, workwise, it’s gonna be a very very tough year for me. Numbers have to be maintained altho the demands are to put it mildly, slackening. So will generally not be as active as b4, esp on wkdays.

Was most thankful that just last Friday, we were fined an amount some 75% lower than the prevailing rate (40k vs 150k) ……..the court was very kind altho my long untested advocacy skill and my doleful look may hv helped.

Greatest fear this year is my eyesight……it’s so bad that I cant tell a traingle from a rectangle, and was embarrassed to have wome walking at me as I entered the washroom……………..

  13. Hi Patsy,

Do I take it that you are coming?

Kenneth, thanks for your support and what games are you familiar with?

Tim, can you lead in the Scrabble group? Last I know you were trying to organize a team to play.

There is still not much response to this first ever monthly gatherings where board games are included. Dear fellow member make a date to come. I am sure through playing games and sharing common interest greater bonding will be formed.

If you have any type of games which you want to introduce, let it be known and we can invite interested member to come. Just a reminder that this event is for us to mix together and if you are not into any games, you can to join in too!

    Dan

  14. Dan, lest you’re not aware of it, your adorable half is our reigning scabble champ. For me, it’s unlikely that I can make the time to attend this monthly gathering (but will try) so I cant take on a role and not be around to perform.

    Another time, can?

  15. Hi Dan,

I am not sure about my coming until nearer the date. In the meantime, do not include my name first.

However, if someone can teach Wei Chi, it would be an added incentive to be there.

    Warmest Regards,
    Patsy

  16. Tim, noted. By the way, the reigning champion for Scrabble was Joyce Tan.

Patsy, okay let see if any one will come forward to teach us how to play Wei Gi.

    Dan

  17. Dear Dan

I will not be doing the monthly meeting registration and hope to hand over the name tags to anyone who is interested.

Time to retire and have a new registrar.

    Thanks, JanetH

  18. Hi Janet,

Noted your concern, let’s hope someone will volunteer to do the registration!

Maggie Teo, thanks for taking the lead for CHor Tai Tee. Those who want to play or learn CTT may approach Maggie or Albert for help.

    Dan

  19. Hi Andrew,

Am glad you could join us. Those keen to learn French Tarot come and join us. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn to keep our minds active and sane for many more years to come.

    Dan

  20. Dan, Dan!
Please don’t put me down as “Golf” leader lah. People keep assuming that I play golf.
It’s a card game named “golf cards”, where you play 2 sets of 9 rounds, then total the scores. The one who achieves the LOWEST score is the winner. See the similarity?
So please note, it’s called the “golf card game”. I don’t know how to swing a club, only know how to ‘swing’ a little, haha.

  21. Andrew Thio
I’d love to learn Tarot- the French one that is. Your card game has a name just as deceptive as mine, haha.
The problem is, how to teach one game and get to play another?

  22. Dan
    May I make a suggestion?
I would love to teach my golf card game, but I would also love to learn and/or play some other games, like Tarot and Scrabble.
Could we have a schedule of the games to be taught? After which, the new players can be left to play on their own, leaving us to participate in other games as well as mingle?

Perhaps you could put up a time table of the various games and ask interested participants to register for them?

I personally will be there at 5pm with 2 or 3 decks of cards. So, anyone who wants to learn, please let me know who you are and be there at 5pm. If there are more who wish to learn later in the evening, I will try to oblige or perhaps my ‘students’ can then teach them?

  23. Hi Dan,
Im a fan of Rummy o..wonder if its the same as Rummykub as posted on the website.I can teach this game if anyone is interested.Iwill bring along my 2 sets.I can assure everyone its a very challenging game & definitely will set yr mind tingling!

    gracew

  24. Hi Mary,

As the response has not come in, we may not have enough member around to put up a schedule. This time round it seems that our old and new member are still sitting on the fence. Could it be that Chap Goh Mei is not over yet.

Strange as it may seem, the March Gathering have already generated some response. And here I am hoping for more to come forward to register for the board games!

So Mary, just hold on the fort at the “Golf” table and see whether more SHCians will sign up.

Grace, thanks for leading in the Kummikub games. I have watch it played once and was very keen to learn. It is actually like a combination of Mahjong and Sor Tai Tee games!

    Dan

  25. The Feb monthly gathering hopes to promote Board and table games among SilverHairs. This is very much in line with SHC objective of providing a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends.

We have few formalities; and those who knows of a board or table game, please come in to share with other members. And those, who likes to learn a new game, please let the team leader know.

Please remember to bring your name tag. If you do not have a name tag, a sticky label will be provided for you to write your name, and stick it on your dress/shirt.

    Terence Seah

  26. Hi Dan,
Perhaps you might like to erase the game’KUMMYKUB’because I dont Know how to play that game. The game that I know is Rummy O.Please correct.Thank You.
    gracew

  27. Hi Grace,

Have made the correction, ‘Rummy O’, oh I have not heard. Thought it was Kummikub! I am still looking for someone to teach the game Kummikub.

Boon Liang, wat kind of game to you have in mind to play?

Roger, noted your choice of game!

    Dan

  28. Hi Janet @ #18 and Dan @ #20

As no one has volunteered, I will do the registration for the Feb 09 monthly gathering.

The fastest way to meet a lot of fellow members is to be at the registration desk. So those who are new, do take your queue number for this duty.

    Joy

  29. Thanks Joy for assisting in the registration and Mary Chan for your offer of help at the desk.

Mary, I don’t know how you can manage what with manning the ‘Golf’ group and splitting yourselves!

Dear fellow SHCians, this is our night of coming together and getting to know each other through common hobbies and interest. Terence has negotiated to avail this premises for us. The premises is fully aircon and foods and drinks are available.

Do make an effort to come and participate in the various board games. The games leaders have come prepared to spend the time to teach and guide us.

    Dan

  30. Dan
Ya hor. Forgot about that. In that case, I better leave it to someone else to assist Joy. Sorry. Will help out anyway if I can find the time, ok?

  31. Hi Dan,

Do include myself, Martin Lee, Ben Foo and Cat Yeo for this monthly meet.

We will just mingle and interact with fellow SHCians.

    Cheers!
    Sue

  32. Hi Dan,

I am interested to learn Wei Qi but at such a short time, dun think my brain can cope after a long day leh, anyway, it is just a short walk for me to get there so I should be able to drop in….

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  33. Hi Christina,

I am still hoping for a sifu to come forward to teach ‘Wei Gi’. Otherwice I will go to the Singapore Intellectual Centre at Bishan to take a crash course or maybe I will try ‘Google’!

Instead of ‘Wei Gi’ perhaps learning to play Chess is less taxing.

    Dan

  34. Hi Dan,
Look like it is going to be a fun nite.
Will try some of the board games and catch up with
    the rest of the members.
    Do include us.

    Peggy & Paul

  35. Hi Sekaran,

Looking foward to meet up with you. Do you have any interest in the board games?

Paul & Peggy, good to meet up with both of you again. Do you want to play Card mahjong or any other games?

Gingko, and what game do you have in mind to learn or play?

The following leaders are still hoping for more members to come forward!
Mary Chan for ‘Golf’, Ronald wie for ‘Word Racer’, Maggie Teo for ‘Chor Tai Tee’ or ‘Big Two’, Andrew Thio for ‘French Tarot’ and Grace Wong for ‘Rummy O’

As usual I shall be keen to engage anyone in a Chess game or coach those keen to learn!

    Dan

  36. Dear Dan

Please register me, will come around 7pm after work. TQ

    Jonathan
p.s. Just one suggestion :- Maybe you could post an update so that the Feb Monthly meeting can be seen at the very top of the SHC website & garner even more interest ;-)

  37. Hi Jonathan,

See you and thanks for the suggestion!

Terence, can the post be shifted or I have to do it all over again. What about all the comment, can I upload them too?

    Dan

  38. Sengh, let me answer you to the point and save you from looking here and there, up & down which is essentially the gripe of these last 3 comments.

As the 6 Feb gathering is nearing, and more will be looking for it to read who are the attendees, what’s up, what’s the latest it will be unnecessary challenging to scroll into the next page to find it.

In short, move this thread to amongst the top, if not the top.

If you still dont understand, I shall play tops and marbles with you to make you revive yr youthfulness…..and the good nimble mind of a young man……..If that still fails, you go attend the Feb gathering yourself.

  39. Haha, Sengh, if me smart then you’re mongkang huh? But how can that be when you know that I know that you know what I know and what I know is you’re smarter than a the greenest of kangkong and sweeter looking than sumokong…..heee.

Seriously, if Danz’s Feb Gathering isnt given its due prominence then he might as well give it up and organise a Hainanese speaking tuition in lieu which even without publicity is sure to attract all the crowd at bras basah. Of cos he’ll use the same SMU premises for this. Dont bet that the vasity wont close shop for a day with the dons and professors all quick to learn how to butt thee bo suit thee…..

  40. Dan
I’m terribly sorry, but I have to renege on my offer to teach ‘Golf’ cards.
I’ve just been assigned some classes to teach and one of them falls on the 25th evening. It’s a package deal and I have to accept all the days given or nothing.
My apologies to you and everyone concerned.

  41. Mary,

No problem, your work come first. We will channel Roger to another game.

Hi Caroline Sit, you must be pretty new to the Club, we look foward to your joining us. SMU Admin Building has it own parking where you may park but the charges may be hefty depending on when you come in.

I will check whether there is a per entry charge after 5.00pm or 6.00pm. Perhaps other members may shed light on this issue?

    Dan

  42. Hi Dan,
Am new to SHC. Would like to join in this gathering.
Never been into SMU Admin building. Which part of the building will you all be meeting?
Interested in learning ‘French Tarot’,“golf cards”, ‘Rummy O’ and ‘Chor Tai Tee’
