Monthly Walk – 25 April 2009

Dear SHCians,

Lets continue walking… it’s on Saturday, 25Apr.’09. We’ll cover the trails of Southern Ridges and cross over to Keppel Island.

Where to meet: At the base of Alexandra Arch, leading to Hortpark. (Alexandra Rd, junction of Hyderabad Rd)

How to get there: Bus service # 51, 61, 93, 97, 100, 166 and 963

Time: 4.00pm sharp

Leaders: Joyce Tan & ChristinaCL Chan

Our Routes:

Forest Walk – Not to repeat the earth trail this time, we’ll take the elevated walkway which span 1.3km. You’ll come face to face with the rich wildlife of the secondary forest : flying dragon; asian koel; hanging bat; squirrel; spider; carpenter bees etc. (just to name a few). As you pass thru this soothing sanctuary of greenery, do watch out for huge nest of weaving ant, and try to spot the different types of fig tree. Know what’s the national flower of Brunei?

Alkaff Mansion – Take a break at this historical site which stands at the top of Telok Blangah Green. It commands a panoramic view with the sea down below.

Henderson Wave/Mt. Faber – Many of us have visited before, we’ll walk thru these seamless link to…

Marang Trail – Work your legs a bit on this steps & shaded foot path…the decending way… 0.8km only…

Keppel Island – Almost the southern tip of Malaysia Peninsular, sitting at the end of a newly built bridge, you don’t have to take a boat to reach this beautiful place. With floating docks that can accommodate upto 200 yachts, it’s a safe haven for the international boating community.

While looking down the turquoise sea, count the number of jelly fish & other fishes swim freely as this area is a ‘no fishing’ zone. Look out to where the ships sail from/thru and watch the changes of colour in the sky during sunset. Enjoy the sea breeze with swifts flying by and the breath-taking sight of the reflection of colourful lights.

End of the walk, you can choose to rest & relax at the chic & cozy ‘Prive’ waterfront cafe/restaurant/bar, or,

a Japanese restaruant and TCC (at the bay) are also welcoming you.

Alternatively, just dine at any eateries you prefer at VivoCity on your way back.

Total Distance: Approx. 7km

Total duration: 2 to 2-1/2 hrs depending on the pace we takeemoticon

What to bring: sun block; cap; umbrella (just in case); small bottle of water

  1. Hi Joyce,

Thanks a lot for organising this walk.
This coming walk seems like a very exciting adventure.
I’ve been to Southern Ridges several times and the serene
nature ever fail to entice me to go back for another visit.

However, I believe there’s a herbal dinner on that day in which members who signed up have to be there by 6.30pm.

Would it be possible to shift the timing a bit to 3pm?

    james

  2. Hi James,

Thanks your interest in this walk. Compare to PLR, this trail is so much easier.
Guess you must’ve missed the latest update posted by SuZhang re herbal dinner, we did look into the timing and it’s no longer an issue now.

    Cheers,

  3. Hi EOs:
Please count me in. Thank you

It is pity that the herbal dinner is called off since the restaurant had closed presumably fallout of this current economic downturn.

Calling all Makan Kakis how about detour instead of makan then join the walk……health is wealth.

Hello Daisy Yeo, how about it? Come lah,,,,,Hope to c u.

  4. Hi Maureen

Have been thinking of you lah. Wondering how come you’ve not been joining cycling on Saturdays?

Don’t mind doing this walk with you but can’t help but notice the rain has been pouring in the afternoons the past few weeks. But okay, got chance to play in the rain then.

Thank you for organising the very exciting walk. Although it is very hot, I enjoyed myself very much.

    Regards King Seng

  22. Hello Joyce & EOs

    Thanks for leading the walk.

I had fun, sun, was tanning and panting but survived the interesting walk nevertheless. There were bridges, trees, flowers, monkeys, birds, pavilions, people, the sea, sunset, boats, luxury homes, belly dancers, helicopter etc. etc etc.

    Cheers
    Daisy

  23. “Thanks for leading the walk…….. There were bridges, trees, flowers, monkeys, birds, pavilions, people, the sea, sunset, boats, luxury homes, belly dancers, helicopter etc. etc etc.”

Wow, it must have been riotous…….even things like pavilions, boats which cant walk also walked with you people……….obviously, the EO was gifted with magical powers or, to the supersitious, possessed. Hee, since the Piped Piper, I have not read, heard or seen another…………..

  24. Hi James / KingSeng / Daisy,

It was real hot having to stay outdoor under a temperature of 36DegC. Not wanting to be burnt, i was trying to move faster but the group seems unfazed… Glad you enjoyed the walk.

The unexpected items added at Keppel Island was a trade off with Jerry fish & swifts as the day coincided with the boat show.

Personally, i prefer morning walk in the greeneries but not sure about other walkists?

To the photographers, any photo to share?

    Thanks & Cheers to all,
    Joyce

Thank you for your comments. I send the photo to Oi Cheng on Tuesday, but I informed her that there are other photographers as well. She might be waiting for the other photos before posting on the web.
