For those who have done part or all of the Pipe Lime ramble series, this is for the masochist in us. The Pipe Line Ramble X-treme is a 4-in-1 combination of the four walks. Total distance is about 25 km walking through a variety of ground from pavement, parks, scrub land, grassland, forest, people’s backyard and of course on the pipe line at certain sections, if you are so inclined. The terrain at parts will be hilly with a few streams to cross and a few walls to climb too.

There will be a lunch stop around Turf City or Sixth Avenue. We’ll play it by ear on that day exactly where.

The walk will end at Pearl’s Hill around 5 or 6 pm. From there we can adjourn to Keong Siak Street for dinner at the either of the famous zhi char restaurants, Kok Sen or Tong Ah to put back all the calories we burnt that day!

The walk will be quite rigorous and be prepared. Wear trekking shoes, if you have otherwise make sure that what you’re wearing gives good traction on uneven ground. Also make sure you are comfortable with walking for 9 hours at a sustained brisk pace before signing up.

Monthly Walk – 25 April 2009

Dear SHCians,

Lets continue walking… it’s on Saturday, 25Apr.’09. We’ll cover the trails of Southern Ridges and cross over to Keppel Island.

Where to meet: At the base of Alexandra Arch, leading to Hortpark. (Alexandra Rd, junction of Hyderabad Rd)

Our Routes:

Forest Walk – Not to repeat the earth trail this time, we’ll take the elevated walkway which span 1.3km. You’ll come face to face with the rich wildlife of the secondary forest : flying dragon; asian koel; hanging bat; squirrel; spider; carpenter bees etc. (just to name a few). As you pass thru this soothing sanctuary of greenery, do watch out for huge nest of weaving ant, and try to spot the different types of fig tree. Know what’s the national flower of Brunei?

Alkaff Mansion – Take a break at this historical site which stands at the top of Telok Blangah Green. It commands a panoramic view with the sea down below.

Henderson Wave/Mt. Faber – Many of us have visited before, we’ll walk thru these seamless link to…

Marang Trail – Work your legs a bit on this steps & shaded foot path…the decending way… 0.8km only…

Keppel Island – Almost the southern tip of Malaysia Peninsular, sitting at the end of a newly built bridge, you don’t have to take a boat to reach this beautiful place. With floating docks that can accommodate upto 200 yachts, it’s a safe haven for the international boating community.

While looking down the turquoise sea, count the number of jelly fish & other fishes swim freely as this area is a ‘no fishing’ zone. Look out to where the ships sail from/thru and watch the changes of colour in the sky during sunset. Enjoy the sea breeze with swifts flying by and the breath-taking sight of the reflection of colourful lights.

End of the walk, you can choose to rest & relax at the chic & cozy ‘Prive’ waterfront cafe/restaurant/bar, or,

a Japanese restaruant and TCC (at the bay) are also welcoming you.

Alternatively, just dine at any eateries you prefer at VivoCity on your way back.

Joyce Tan – Profile

Greetings…

I am Joyce, a commoner. Born in an attap kampong hut 50 years ago. Single parent with 2 grown up children. Used to practice Yoga but stop 10 years ago upon doctor’s advice after my neck injury. Not good in talking, feels more comfortable participating in physical exercise.

Begin to feel the ‘Empty Nest’ now. A nature lover, I missed those days when I sneaked out in an adult’s bicycle at the age of six, roaming alone in the greeneries of the kampong, racing with dragon fly and butterfly, and waddling thru rising water with sea creatures, like sea snakes; crabs; shrimps and plenty of fishes, to reach home during the 3rd & 18th day of the (chinese) month (due to high tide)…..

As I’m working full time and due to my age, not sure if my muscles still can support me in activities like long distance cycling & hiking etc.  Hope to be able to join you guys in some activities some day when the timing match.

Cheers to all active SH
