Brief Description:

Terrain is EASY for all ages.
Bring your cameras – very scenic!
Toilet facilities — at MRT station EW25. Next available approx 30/45mins later,
many available at the Jurong Gardens.
Rain or shine, we will be there!

This month, let’s go West!
In the past years, it is rare that our monthly walks is towards this direction.

Where?  in this highly urbanized city we lived in to find a place that flows with greenery, peace, calm and
Serenity…. A gem in the West, of pristine beauty –  Jurong Lake and its Gardens!    emoticon

It is one of the "Destination Parks"  that will get a massive makeover – expect significant development that
will transformed it into the next big suburban commercial hub.

Let us troop down to Jurong Lake, a 70ha freshwater lake and reservoir to enjoy its breathtaking view
before the day draws near where this area is further enhanced, changed forever!    emoticon

Along the perimeter of Jurong Lake, a landscaped sanctuary Park was completed in 2006.
Pause,  take in the sights across glistening waters ……    see families, friends chatting under shade of
trees, strolling at leisure in the park,  children frolic around with laughter, kite flying, fishing……
uhmmm…… breathe in,  to energize the following week’s hustle and bustle.
Look out for clusters of older banyan tress where their aerial prop roots spread out laterally like a small
fence along certain fringe of the lake, where the trunks are covered with an orangy hue – rarely found
or seen in Singapore.

As one stroll into one of the Jurong Gardens found within the Lake, time stood still in nostalgia……….
step onto the ‘Pai Hung Ch’iao’ Bridge, the white rainbow, 13-Arch Bridge;  though this bridge is shorter
than the famous 17-Arch Bridge at the Summer Palace in Peking, it still maintains the magnificent
architectural design of a typical beautiful bridge found in China.

Stay cool Be cool!        emoticon

  1. Dear Christina CL and Serene Low,

You all got a nice spot this month for all the walkers. This place is very difference from all the usual places we have walked. Believe everyone will enjoy it as there are many food centres around Jurong East MRT area and also restaurants at JCube, the latest attraction for the West.

Please register Danny Lye and June Tan for this walk. We will be there to support our home ground.

  2. Dear Christina,

I am new to the club and would appreciate if you could include me in your upcoming monthly walk to Jurong Park. I look forward to meet up with fellow Silver Hair Club members. Best, Tong Wai

  3. Hi Christina

Wait long long until there is a walk in the West, I should be the one to register first

Unfortunately, now I am not in the West of Singapore, or even I am not in the East, South or North of Singapore, I am in HK now. No choice but to give this walk a miss.

When will a walk in the West again? Another 4,5 or 6 years, sigh.

  4. #1 Danny+June – thanks for your support!

#2 TanLiLi — noted also registration for JaneC. I think I did not get to meet you last month, look forward to meet you this tm!

#3#9, SusanCHT — we communicated, thanks!

#4 BarbaraL — 1st walk with us? Look forward to meeting you!

    Cheerio!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  5. #5 LeeTH — haven’t seen you for a while in our walks. Glad you are coming!

    #6 Toon Foong Zhern/Tong Wai
1st – warm welcome to the club!
I see 2 names, can explain?

#7 GabriellaC — good to see you are back to our walks!

    thanks for your support!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  6. #8 Andrew… there better be a good reason for you to be in HKG! tsk tsk

I have no answer to your “sigh”, as the far-distant future has too many uncertainties!

Though Do not be like me –
I have passed Jurong Lake daily for 5years from 1999-2003 saying that 1 day I will visit it again. It was so near yet so far; many other things always took priority! That 1 day is going to happen only on 12May2012!

Even then, prior to the recce for more than 1 month and even after the 2 recces, I was still pondering …. still considering to do another trail because it is not easy to pinpoint the start and finishing line of this route!
One can get to it from several points but where will be the BEST entrance to bring forth this beautiful place …? At last, I found it! trusting that it is the best,,,, :D

    Besides,
    1) if my info is correct, majority of the walkers are not from the West
    2) pple living in SG, seldom, rarely consider to head West because it has been viewed as an “industrial area” what to see! :D

So, perhaps, this is 1 RARE opportunity ….. missed this, this place might never look the same!

  7. Actually there’s quite a misunderstood impression of being “very far” in Jurong which consists of Jurong East and Jurong West. Chinese Garden is at J East(JE). JE is a much smaller town than J West (which extends all the way to Tuas). J East is the immediate neighbourhood of Bukit Batok and will be the future Jurong Lake District.

In terms of MRT station, Jurong Interchange MRT and Chinese Garden are the 2 stations there in JE, and it is quite near to each other you can even walk within these 2 stations.

J West is linked by several MRT stations – Lakeside, Boon Lay, Pioneer, Joo Koon and there will be more extensions all the way to Tuas in the future.

You will be surprised when you come here and see that it’s not too far to travel to Chinese Garden – it’s just 2 stops away from Clementi. And it’s within walking distance to Science Centre, Snow City and there’s a nice Jurong Regional Library (again sounds very far – Jurong hah!).

  8. Dear Eos Christina & Serene,
Please count me in as I am interested in the brisk around the Jurong Lake.Currently, Jurong Lake is among the three great national parks mentioned as great places to indulge in good exercises and brisk strolling.Thanks.See you.

  9. Thanks Christina. Just because my naughty joke, you give me such a detail explanation. Thanks again.

So I must answer your question. The reason I am in HK now is all because of money. Usually I will visit HK to meet my brothers and friends in Oct or Nov every year. Last year I postponed my visit to this year as I am waiting for the HK government give me HK$60000 which I can only get this year. This make me miss the walk in the West I waited long, long, sigh (again)

See you in the next walk. Old friend.

  10. Hi EOs,
Thanks for putting efforts to organise a walk in the WEST this time.
Unfortunately, had a prior appt that day and have to give this NICE GARDEN WALK a miss.
See you all next time…so sorry about it.

    Wow AndrewY #15,
Drinks on you when you come back from HK – yes?

  11. Hi Christina

Yes, it is my first walk with SHC. I am fairly new to
SHC too. I hope I can find you on that day.

    Look forward to meeting you,

    rgds
    Barbara

  12. Hi Christina and Serene

Please include me as my last walk with SHC friends was quite some time ago at the former railway tract.

    Rgds
    Mega

  13. #14 PrimroseK, yo! brisk walking ok but brisk strolling huh? I want to see you doing it hahaha just pulling your leg, can?

    See you!
    ChristinaCL Chan

  14. #15 Andrew, not because of your joke, remember You asked me last month,,,it is your “kampung” mah! so am very surprised! wow 60k! good reason to miss this walk! see you when you are back in SG!

#16 IvanL, mana boleh ini ma’cam?

#17 BarbaraL, no worries, you WILL spot us!

#19 MegaA, that’s months ago! Good to see you again!

  15. Hahaha AndrewY #25,

Does that mean now we can only have either drinks OR bread, not both, at the next meet since the typo-error was discovered?

Hahahaha, dun tell me: “That’s Un-avoidable” …. because that “mister” who said that, got his face slapped left-right-&-centre too on the “NET”.

Cheers! Bro, only kidding you lah! You buy the Bread and I get the drinks – share share we will have both! Hehehehee.

  16. Hi Bro Ivan

Although now the exchange rate of Sing$ to HK$ ia 1 : 6.2

Although I have spent some HK$ in a meeting of me and a HK SHC lady.

I think the remaining Sing$ (exchange from HK$) will still enough for 2 drinks and 2 bread, or may be with 4 half-boiled eggs. So don’t worry. I still owe you a pajamas pant, Bro.

  17. Hi Christina,

From May 9 – ll, I’ll be on a cruise to a Trengganu offshore island named Redang for snorkelling. If I’m not too tired on May 12, I’ll join in the walk.

I’m known for being early in any appointment, if I am not there by 4.30pm, it means I’m resting & not coming. Thks.

    Historical note:

At one time, a bulldozer driver saw a large croc sunbathing on the bank of Jurong Lake. He drove the vehicle over the croc and killed it. It was reported in The Straits Times more than a decade ago.

    Blessings,

    Terry

  18. #30 Terry,
For your info, there are lots of “croc” around in SHC too. So better beware and make sure u r not one of them.

So far, Jurong Lake has no report of croc sighting for decade since the last report you mentioned.

  19. #24 IvanL, mother’s day! huh? I forgot! my son asked today! mmmh, still can make it after the walk hehehe

    #28 JimmyT, I hear you!

#29 JanieL, hi gal, glad you can join us!

It only months/year for West to welcome you all, so do not hesitate to come and support the walk this month. “Chia-yu !”

Looking forward to the next trip.

    Till we meet again…..

    Warmest regards,
    Gabriella

  33. Hi Christina,

Annie & me want to thank you for leading us on the walk to chinese/japanese garden. Visiting two countries in less than two hours and back to Singapore with about 15 of us having dinner and chit chat at kopitiam before heading home.

    Evening well spend.

Thank you once again and all your EOs present.!

    Stay Healthy Be Happy :)

  34. Would like to thank the EOs for organising this wonderful walk even though the group was not as big as the previous walks. The weather was perfect for the day and everyone enjoyed the walks and scenery. Better still everyone did a very good job posing for a good group photo. I would also like to take this opportunity to thanks each and everyone for their efforts. Keep up !!!!!!!!!!

  35. Hi all photographers of the above event:

  36. I have forwarded my photos taken on Sat walk @Jurong Lake to Kin Seng for him to upload to the website for members viewing. Alternative, if you are eager to see all the photos, you are welcome to view them at my facebook : dannylye. If you are enable to view them, you can send me an invite to make you as my friend in order to view them.

Hope you like the photos taken. Quality wise might not be as sharp as professional photographers but at least there’s something for us for rememberance for our monthly walks.

  37. Yes, Danny, I received your photos. I will wait till this weekend for other photographers to send me theirs before I upload them.
    Thanks
    King Seng

  38. #59 GabriellaC
Thank you, too! yup, we will meet again soon!

    #60 JohnnyP
haha what a journey… I think majority were tired due to the blazing sun! Am not complaining as for our walks, better to have the “sun” than ‘rain’ :D

    #61 DannyL,
yeah, we need the encouragement to keep walking!

    #64 DannyL,
no worries on quality, your effort is much appreciated!
In due time, your skill will also improve.

#65 LKS, THANKS! for uploading the photos.

    RGDS,
    ChristinaCL CHAN

  39. King Seng,

Thank you for all your hard work and time uploading all the photos to the SHC’s website for members sharing.

    Rgds,
    Danny Lye

  40. This morning, I could not sleep well, because of this weekend trip to Coastal Thailand. So, I thought I would review the photos of the Jurong walk.

I am not too sure who the photographer is, but I can say the pictures are beautiful and very well taken. I guess they were taken by Danny Lye. And, thank you to King Seng too, who have recomposed and uploaded the pictures for everyone to see.

Christina is very consistent and mati mati a great EO for the walk group. We have to learn from her and the co-EOs how to keep this healthy activity running for years. Sometimes, she would scold me for not paying attention to the walk group; as I have not participated before. I think the banner carries a picture of Lydia Soh (left) and two other ladies whom I have also not met. There are so many faces I do not recognise. Do have a look at the photos, and you will see how the walk group enjoys themselves. A great way to meet new friends too.

I thought this banner picture was a nice shot, so I have put it up today. Thank you Chris and Serene for making the walk enjoyable.

    Terence Seah
