What is the Internet? Talk on 20-04-2013 (Saturday)

Hello fellow SHCians,

IT For SeniorsFor your information, I am doing a repeat of this talk (last done in Nov/2012) in Leng Kee CC (5-minutes walk from Redhill MRT) on the abovementioned date. The time is from 3.00PM to 5.00PM. For those interested, please go to link itforseniors.wordpress.com or meetup.com/itforseniors for more details. The classroom can only accommodate 20 persons and registration will close at 20.

Preamble: The quest for knowledge is a human instinct.  In our golden years, we are not so able to travel far and long distances. But not to worry, we have the Internet, a worldwide network where we can network with our love ones/friends, find out, enjoy, see a movie, etc., practically anything we can think of, most of it is for FREE and at the comfort of our home. All we need to invest in is a broadband Internet plan and a smart device (desktop/laptop computer, iPad, tablet, etc.). Last but not least, we must know how to use the tools we have invested in.

NB: I am also doing voluntary work with YWCA. At the moment is conducting Basic to Intermediate Excel (4-sessions course). The fees are $20 and $24 for members and non-members respectively. All monies go to YWCA. Those interested can contact ywca.org.sg

  1. Hi! HL

I had tried to register with meetup.com/itforseniors and meetup.com/itforseniors but unsuccessful, cos I don’t know how to progress. Appreicate your assistance, or fix me in the list. Thnks & rgds – Sarah

  2. Hi Hew Lee,

#5 Jac – will let you know when the next class is finalized.

  4. Hi Hew Lee

I do not register for the talk on 20-04-2013, haha

Today surfed your site – “IT for Senior” (sorry, know the site for a period, but just visit it today, because I am lazy). I found the information provided in your site is quite useful for those non IT-savvy senior like me. You should have put a lot of effort on it. Thanks

I noticed one topic “Microsoft Excel for YWCA” of 09/02/2013. I think this event was over.

I know a little bit about the Microsoft Office applications (near all of them). If next time you have to do this kind of course, and need assistance to do some minor work, you can call me. So I can helping as well as learning. Thanks

  5. Hi Andrew,

Thanks for visiting my Blog itforseniors.wordpress.com

YWCA has a computer room that can take in about 10 students at one sitting for hands-on learning. My commitment with them is not on a commercial (but on voluntary) arrangement and they (YWCA) are not allowed to charge commercial rates for lessons conducted by me.

In this Excel course (4 x two hours sessions), the participants are hands-on in learning (or refreshing) their skills on Excel template designs of various objectives.
Tips on how to avoid errors in Excel worksheet are also explained.

The computer room is quite small and not suitable to have helpers walking around the classroom.
If the subject content is relevant, the most one helper is sufficient.

  6. Hi Hew Lee

Thanks for your reply, I understand it is not a commercial event, and I raise my hand just for interest.

So if you got some other classes (mainly on Microsoft Office) to run and need helper for minor work, call me, no charge.

Of course, after the class, we can visit a coffee shop nearby – you buy me a teh-C, I buy you a coffee and you tell me more on the IT, haha.

  7. Andrew, we don’t need to wait for another lesson to have a cup of coffee or tea-C. If anyone of you want to meet up with me, the best day is on Thursday. Just sms me or email me at hewlee@gmail.com.

Active ageing through lifelong learning is not just the 27-letters words. First you need to have “Passion” on things you like to do, then come the “Involvement” (get involved on things you like to do regularly) and last but not least, “Challenge” yourself (organise one EC or EO event yourself). Of course the third part is difficult and put many people away. Why, I think most of us fear “failures” because we have not done it before. But the only way to remove “fear” is to face “fear” head-on and challenge yourself. How, talk to or learn from your circle of friends over a cup of coffee or tea-C.

  8. Hi Hew Lee

First time chat to you in the new designed site, the feeling is much better.

Sure will e-mail you one Thu for the cup of drink (or may be also with one or two pieces of toast).

More see your writing, feel more like you. Always got some useful advice. I don’t understand why you and me are ageing but we are so different – you are active, full of passions and I am so lazy, may be because you are more ageing than me, haha, just joking. Should meet you more to learn your attitude to life.

Don’t waste your precious time to reply me, let talk until we meet. Good morning
