  1. Ha, ha, Clara Chay you are very very fast. I was going to alert you, but you are a step ahead of me.

Now, you can meet and sing a duet with your “Singapore Cowboy” .

    Have fun!

  2. Hi Joy

Thanks for the info. The group sounds interesting, but 8-11pm is quite short right ?

Not sure if I still want to go Zouk, as expected, it’s going to be very crowded especially on weekends. After the last experience, I actually told myself, once is enough. I prefer Dragonfly.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I shall give this a miss.

  3. Hi Joy,
Yeap, thanks for the info.. I don’t really prefer Zouk but the last time was really enjoyable, I guessed it is company of frens that went with us.

For me, I prefer to cheong at different places so I will also give this a miss liao..

I think you should able to gather some crowd go along with you lor..

My dear susan, 8-11pm only for concert la, after that still can continue jogat jogat la.. hehehehe

  4. Hey Joy

I take offence with the term “party animal” leh. And you??? going to Zouk??? You??? whose eyes close shop at 11pm??? haha. No lah, enough of Zouk liao. Prefer to try different place lor. Thanks for taking the lead. Hope you and others have as much fun as we did the last time we were there.

    Cheers
    Lily

  5. Hi Joy,

We would like to join the party. We can take in 3 early birds in our car. Please sms to register for the lift. Pick up point will be at Junction 8.

    Regards,
    Robert & Kristy Quek

  6. Hee hee Lily. Party queen? Actually I am usually in bed by 10.30pm on weekdays.

Thought I could have some company to experience Zouk as the programme sounds interesting and I have not been there. Not in the habit of visiting night spots.

Thanks Clara for your interest. Let’s see if any others would be keen to join us.

  7. Oh hi Robert

Just read your comment. Thank you so much for offering a ride in your car. Count me in. I will SMS you so that you have my number.

  8. Hi Robert,

I would like to be your passenger too..to take a ride in your car also..I suggest to have dinner together before proceeding to the venue. Do consider… Thanks *

  9. Ok, now we have two hitch-hiking birdies. We can meet at Bishan Bus Terminal at 6.30 pm and proceed to the nearby Foodcourt for dinner. How about this, Joy and Clara?

    Robert

  10. Hi Joy

Alice and I will join you and the group to the concert, especially the Singapore Cowboy will be there. We know them since long, many many years ago when they sang at the Shangrila Hotel. After that we went to hear him sang in many other places, the last time was at the Serangoon Garden Country Club. His singing will definitely bring back memories of the past, since the time when he first started singing after coming back from Nashville, U.S.A.

    CHEERS

    Ronlai

  11. Hi Joy

Jeffrey Fong and Maureen Tay will be joining in. It is great to hear Vernon Cornelius and Matthew & The Mandarins on stage. Those good old days.
    Cheers
    Jeffrey Fong

  12. Hi Robert

The concert starts at 7pm. If we set aside, say, 45 mins to have dinner, xx mins for the journey there, then we know what time we should meet. Don’t want us to be rushed and frazzled.

Look forward to enjoying the night and concert with our group of lovely people…

  13. Hi Joy,
Count me in on this. These are all familiar and will certainly bring back memories of good times. Am going to be the third birdie hitching a ride with Robert and Kristy. Robert will walk in like a sheik with 4 lovely women in his harem.

  14. Oldies are goodies………mulling over it, if still cant decide by early next week, will toss a coin (but nobody shd grab it until it lands) and let fate decide.

Dont they say, life is fated??

  15. My car passenger space is now fully taken up and we are going to have a nostalgic time listening to our local greats. It’s going to be ‘Thanks for the memories’ all over again.

    See all of you guys.

    Robert, the ‘Sheik’

  16. Haha, Robert, I know you’ll be quick to jump at my seemingly resignation to fate. I know it’s contentious & will certainly ruffle a few feathers & at least one strand of silverhair.

The “they” are folks who are no longer around to explain or justify. Yes, it’s kind of hearsay….they say so i say altho I too know of many braves who will argue that fate is in our hands.

Robert, I am fated to meet them occasionally at nite when they place soccer bets with me. I’ll let them hv yr hp to call and you can ask them for some hot 4-digits……invariably spot-on and win you big $ if yr fate says so. If they give you a dud, that too is fated.

No doubt you’re a sheik but my worry is, with yr car fully loaded with pretties eager to shake anywhere they’re in, not sure whether yr car can shake all its way to zouk without shaking some wheels off.

You may be too shaken on arrival to shake the hands of Mathew or accept the milk-shake shaken off the cowboys’ pet udders, with yr face still alternating shakes of white & green.

Call that fate invited aboard ?

  17. Hi,

I would like to join in the fun. Anyone staying at Tampines and dont mind picking up a hitchhiker? Sori a bit thick skinned, haha

  18. Hi Jie,

We meet at Bishan Bus Terminal at 5.30 pm and proceed to the nearby Foodcourt for dinner.

    The bus services are: 52 – 59.

    Robert

  19. I threw up a S$1.00 coin, caught & covered it with my hands. When I opened my palm, the queen stared right in my face, unsmilng………..

So pls count me in otherwise who knows what the queen will do after changing the crest to her face.

  20. Hi Robert

Oh yeah. I had posted it as 8pm! How on earth did 7pm come into my mind? Maybe I was thinking too much of 07/07/07.

Ok, we can meet at 6.30pm instead for dinner.

Will get my ticket online too. Thanks.

  21. Hi Joy

Are U purchasing tickets for and on behalf of all of us and paying you, if tickets have numbers and we have to group together. Otherwise, then we have to buy the tickets ourselves.

Bro Tim, how nice to have U to come along, it will definitely brighten up the group, especially, as you hv said, neither there is a smiling or unsmiling Queen, but at least U get the better half, the Crest is good enough, luckily not the Inche I…..hehe

    Ronlai

  22. Hi Joy, Clara & Jie,

I too have bought and paid for our own tickets through the internet. Jie, how about yourself? Don’t forget to print out the receipt to exchange for the original ticket on the 28th.

    Robert & Kristy

  23. Hi Ron,

Vincent & I are interested. How to go about registering or do we need to do our own booking. Hope there are some more vacancy. Anyway, can we hitch a ride home from you (very thick skin indeed – ha, ha )

  24. Brudder Ron, pe-97 HK$5 shd be abt S$1 only if I got to keep the coin….. that queen has gnawed thru my pocket & must hv eloped with that fella who changed my coin when I tossed it.

Ya hor, me forgot abt the tickets. Any gallant knights, queens getting tickets in bulk order?

Otherwise fated to wait outside zouk to shake yr hands then bade you all gdnite when you leave.

    See, Robert, everythg is fated……………

  25. Thanks Robert, bought my ticket on line last night.
Meeting at 6.30 pm is fine for me, am very flexible on it. But by the time we have our dinner we would just be on time for the opening at 8.00pm. Robert, hope you have or will be recce the parking situation. It sure will save a lot of headaches.

  26. Hi Jie and All, Can park you car at Grand Copthorne Waterfront, then walk across to eat at the Zion Road Hawker Centre opposite Zouk. Got some nice food there. Enjoy!

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  27. Hi Joy

Have already booked on-line liao. C U there that very evening.

Hi Nora/Vincent the post was done by Joy, anyway U can book online thru’ the website. Please refer 2 the above Robert’s comment No 27 for booking of tickets, and don’t forget to print out RECEIPT for exchange of concert tickets at ZOUK.

    REGARDS

    Ronlai

  28. Ya Robert,
See you at Bishan at 6-30.
Caroline has kindly pointed a way to ‘chope’ a parking space before the actual crowd comes in.
I leave it to you whether you want to take advantage of this pointer….after all you are driving. I ain’t no back seat driver.

  29. Dear fellow Zoukies

Sorry to have been missing in action for a coupla days. Have been busy.

Thanks to Robert for providing the link to the online booking system.

I suggest we get our own tickets. Thanks.

  30. Hi All

This has reference 2 Suzhang’s comment No 3, please note that the concert may be only for 3 hrs at ZOUK, ticket holders are allowed to stay on after the concert, as they have paid the entrance fee together with one standard free drink.

    REGARDS

    Ronlai

  31. Hi Robert,
For your info.. Nora/Vincent/Julie have bought their tickets online too. As we are staying in the East of singapore, we are going together in a cab.. Thank you for your offer. See all soon !

    clara…

  32. Dear all

Shall we meet outside Zouk at 7.30pm sharp on 28/7 so that we all can go in together? Whether you go for dinner or direct, we should meet there. Is it Ok?

    Cheers
    Jeffrey & Maureen

  33. Hi Robert

We have booked our tickets. Thank you very much for yr help. Sam, Alice, Liu and I will certainly have a night of fun with you all there.

    Janet

  34. Hi

Wow! Nice big group we have now. Thanks to Robert for helping all those who needed help.

We all got our own tickets. So if you have not gotten yours, you may wish to do so.

    Joy

  35. Hi

Janet here. My hubby forgot that he has to fly on that day and that means I have an extra ticket available. Anyone interested to get the ticket from me? My no. is 93894918. I will be most happy to wait for you at Zouk’s entrance at 7.30pm. Thanks.

    Janet

  36. Haha, so finally Mr Liu gets to go with Mrs Liu to zouk bcos Mr Liu will be flying that nite but if there’s a change of plan & Mr Liu is grounded then Mr Liu is happy to step back & let Mr Liu accompany Mrs Liu otherwise Mr Liu will wait for Mrs Liu @ 7.30 pm outside zouk.

  37. Thank you so much, Mr Liu. How all this ended as such is very hilarious. Me and my hubby had a good laugh! Anyway, I’m impressed by all the quick work and response. See you there, Mr Liu.

    Janet

  38. Other than the hilarity, you can look forward to a darn good date with Mr Liu.

Jokes aside, thanks a lot, Mr & Mrs Janet Liu for being such great sports !

  39. Wah, what a coincidence! Imagine if Mr Liu and Mrs Liu have a son Tim Liu. This would be more spooky than 266.

Anyhow, glad to have so many wonderful people to share the night with…

  40. Too late, Tim Liu has already been trade-marked but tim tim liu, tim yong liu, yow tim yow liu, liu ng tim, tim ng sai mun mun liu……….all still available so go approach liu woon ying for immediate registration.

  41. Help! I have just registered myself tried to post my note of newbie but cannot see it on the forum general. I would like to join this concert could someone please help me with the registration and payment please. thanks.

  42. Hi Joy and Robert. Would like to join you all on
28/07. Have bought 2 tickets on-line for myself -Philip Ong and Anne Ng, thanks to Robert for providing the link . See you at Zouk !

  43. Hi,

I am Kalah and would like to join you guys. Please advise me on where and whom I should contact for the payment? I am very new to this. Thanks. Have a wonderful day!

  44. Qn was : ” See you & all outside Zouk. What time??”

If you want to see mr liu, anytime, anywhere.

If you want to see the ceremony of Mrs P.H. Liu handing over her ticket to mr liu, then it’s 7.30 pm outside zouk. There’s no need to register.

Otherwise, we shd be standing outside zouk close to 7.30 pm, and when the gate is opened, cheong ! Remove yr shoes if the heels arent sturdy……..you can run faster holding yr shoes………

  45. Hi Agnes

I am meeting Robert, Kristy and Jie for dinner at Bishan at 6.30pm and then heading to Zouk in Robert’s car.

I think Mr and Mrs Liu will be there earlier than us for the handing over ceremony at the gate. There is a gate?

Those who are there early can chope some precious seats for our group to take turns sitting on, otherwise we will have tired legs at the end of the night.

    Joy

  46. Ooops, me never been to Zouk so thot it’s like any other danz club, pub housed in a building that comes with a gate.

But of cos Zouk is an open field like the Padang but unlike the Padang, it has a lot of bushes where a lot of pushing can be done in there……………..

    Wrong again?

  47. Hi Joy, Jie & Lin,

Lin will also be joining us for dinner. She is replacing Clara. See all of you outside Bishan Bus Terminal Control Room at 6.30 pm and let’s have a nostalgic time at Zouk.

    Regards,
    Robert & Kristy

  48. Dear All,
Zouk has 3 Theme outlets – as its weekend, its always crowded. Moreover, its patrons are mostly youngsters & working adults not more than 35 years of age.

If really want to hangout, I would propose you go Dragonfly @ St James PowerStation, Harbourfront. This is a very nice place – the ambience is good, music is great (have Canto pop & William Scorpion, etc..). Must book at least 10 days in advance If go on a Friday nite after dinner say around 8.30pm should be OK. For yr consideration.

    Pearlynn

  49. Dear Pearlynn

Thanks for the info, but we are going to Zouk specially for the CONCERT which will feature music veterans performing music from yesteryear.

    Joy

  50. Dear all

Heard over Gold 90FM radio this afternoon on this coming Concert at zouk that the response is overwhelming. Hope all be there by 7.30pm sharp this Saturday with your tickets.

    Cheers
    Jeffrey & Maureen

  51. Dear fellow Zoukies

Oh wow! Maybe we can have a recruitment drive for SHC membership that night.

By the way, anybody knows what ladies wear or don’t wear to Zouk? I’ll have to see what I can beg, borrow or steal…

    Joy

  52. Hi Joy

I would like to join your Zouk Nite event. Coming with some friends. We have already bought our tickets online.

Seeya at 7.30 pm this Sat.

    Ele

  53. Hi everybody,

I am a new member, very new to all the activities, well Zouk nite event seem pretty good with oldies, anyone can tell me where can i get the ticket or is it too late………….

    Jojo

  54. Hi Jojo, I am grateful to Janet for selling me her hubby’s ticket. Understand that she, like most others, made their purchases on-line and you can check how it’s done by scrolling up.

Hope you manage to get the last ticket. Otherwise, maybe you can wait for me outside at abt 11 p.m. when the show’s over for my narration of what has happened in there.

  55. Hi Yew Kwong and Tim Liu,

Tks for all your prompt informations, infact I did scrollup later on and went to the website, but after second thought thinking it is a concert must be a real real big crowd. Contemplating, well it is a good old days concert,I am sure u guys and ladies will enjoy that evening. Tks Tim for yr concern but 11pm is too late.

  56. Yew Kwong, indeed. As the family grows and we getting younger at heart, there’s a pressing need to look for father figures so maybe you can do us this favour when you reccee P Ubin this wkend…..and dont miss the tree-top bcos at their age they shd be very active.

Jojo, I attend bcos Mathew had promised me a beer 36 years ago when I was then underaged so I’ll let him keep his promise even tho 11 pm is also very late for me.

  57. Tim Liu,

I wish to join u guys, to be honest I have not been to Zuok, all the while my thought of that place is a big area ,somewhere around river valley. Maybe shld try and make a point to this place. Mathew used to sing at the Negara Hotel two years ago, are you there as I was there very frequent most of the Friday evening.

  58. Jojo, I am more a mandarin song man, admirer of the true-strength (shi li pai) singers not those who are hyped as heavenly kings/queens who, to me, are no more than heavily embroidered mannequins.

Yes, i was aware that Mathew continued with his shows at H Negara but believed no longer with the same ensemble of Manadarins.

Occasionally, I went to the caravan at york to watch the thunderbirds but that too was eon years ago. Now, my favourite past-time in the evenings is to study primary school subjects.

  59. Thanks, Jojo, we all hv the same hope (otherwise why pay $28 each, sacrifice sleep to go?).

Privately, I harbor another hope…..hope that I cd get Mathew to become a SHCian in time for Concert 2008…………….and then we hv even better reasons to price the tickets higher.

  60. Aiyo Tim, you not enough sleep lah! Ticket is S$12 and is on 28 Jul hor. You better discipline yourself to sleep early from now, otherwise you are seeing Mattress instead of Mathew! Ha..ha..haa

    Ah Nee.

  61. Ooops, I let the cat out of the bag…..yes, it includes the angpow i m going to give as inducement for Mathew to join SHC, and now also ANee’s mattress for Mathew…….wow, really lucky, man !

  62. Jojo, if you wish to come and have not purchased a ticket yet, I can give you one. In fact, I have 2 extra tickets to give away. Please sms me at 8123-8542 if you want to take it.

  63. Hi Janet, pls see Joy’s #99 reminder.

Can this faithful believer in fate, leave his fate in yr good hands ?

    Tks……………………….

  64. Yes, Tim.Last night,I was telling Ron,Alice,Robert and Kristy that I will give you a complimentary ticket. It’s my way of thanking you cos it’s a waste not to enjoy the night, right? So, see you tmr evening.

    Janet

  65. Heee, if we travel back in time to kiddo days when we gave each other things then yes, pls give me that ticket & I’ll give you an angpow.

If not, a direct sale-and-purchase is crisp.

Seriously, thanks Janet, pls let me buy it from you. You can treat Mr Liu to something when Mr Liu has something in mind.

    Ok?

  66. Hi Folks
Tomorrow is the day. Remember if you drive don’t drink and if you drive don’t drink. Have fun.
    Cheers
    Maureen & Jeffrey

  67. Hi Joy

It was a lovely evening at ZOUK, although my wife and I manage to meet only a handful of the Silverhairs because of the tremendous crowd, we had a wonderful time, going back to the good old days, on hearing the beautiful songs of the 60s, 70s n 80s. With Brian Richmond’s questions n answers session of the days gone by, it really brought back memories of the past.

    CHEERS

    Ronlai

  68. Dear all

Some thoughts about the event :-

First, the night was an educational trip for me. $13 for three hours is fair for a peek into Zouk and put a face to the performers’ names, non-stop entertainment that blew my senses away, a bottle of evian mineral water and good company.

There were not enough seats, but we created many for ourselves. We sat on the steps, on the floor and anywhere where we could rest our butt. It was crowded and I suppose the SHC members plonked themselves in small groups throughout the place. With me were Clara, Agnes, Lin, Dan and Maria.

I had showers of blessing from above when the guy behind me (are you from SHC?) spilled his drink on my head. Maybe he wanted my seat on the steps.

I spied with my little eyes (errr, maybe a little sleepy by then). I saw Vernon Cornelius kissing Caroline’s hand and putting his cheeks to hers. Hee hee…

Finally, the official receipt should be on one page to save paper and it should function as the ticket as well.

Hope it had been worth the trip for all who went.

    Joy

  69. Hi everyone,

Yes, it was a wonderful evening. Its been a long time since I expose my ears to such loud drumming and noise but it’s worth it.
Was surprised to see quite a number of young ones in their 20s present. Pity did not get to see the other SHC members…

    Regards

  70. Hi Joy and everyone who went to Zouk last night.

I was comfortably seated on the podium in front with some people I just met – they came and sat with me because the other SHCians did not want to join me because they feel its too close and it will be too loud. Sorry that I miss meeting some members whom I have not met before because it was so crowded and dark.

Anyway, I had a really good time, singing along with the familiar tunes and got a chance to dance a bit when Vernon decided to jump on our seats to perform so got excuse to stand up and do my thing.

Joy you were not dreaming. Vernon did kiss my hand and muah muah my cheek. I have known him since I was in primary school. He used to come to my place to chit chat with my sisters – he was their friend. My eldest sister who won the “A-Go-Go Queen” contest, used to be a dancer with the Trailers and my second sister used to sing with a band and did a recording too. Zul from Tania, and Patrick and Freddie from Speedway were my school mates.

So someday if they come and kiss my hand and muah muah me, dont be shocked.

Hope you all enjoyed yourselves very much because I did. Glad to have Maria as company on the way home :)

    Have a great Sunday!

  71. Hi Caroline,

Yes lah, i say you been captivated and reliving those good old days, good thing Vernon stopped at just that.

No wonder lah , so difficult to get you to join me , Daniel and Edwin for any sing along , as we are not up to any of your idols’s mark.

So you should be a sikit atas singer lah, dont want to sing, until some well known musician appears in SHC group lah ?

Ok getting to the point, when can we have the next maken gathering at your place or rather this time we should just order your food and cakes for the next Pot Luck ? Once again , thanks for the last makan , this time should be on us lah.

    Cheers
    Allrounder

  72. Hi, it was a wonderful evening for Anne and myself. Music was great, especially the country and western hits from Matthew and the Mandarins. They still sounded as good as before. Pity not all the SHC members could group together to meet each other. So crowded and even standing room was limited. Maybe the 7.30pm meet-up was not good (early) enough. But I am sure many of us went home happy after the enjoyable evening. Thanks and see you again the next time. Best Regards … Philip

  73. Hi Joy

My wife and I enjoyed ourselves very much. Great music and songs and drinks were cheap at 1 for 1. Sad that we do not have a chance to meet you except for a few SHCs including Robert & wife. We were there at 7.15pm and found the place crowded. Thanks and hope to see u again next time. We will be going for the “Elvis” next month. Hope to see all of you there.
    Cheers
    Maureen & Jeffrey.

  74. Hi Ron Wie,

I appreciate your leaving me out of this idol worshipping. In those earlier days when I played at the Changi, Seletar RAF air bases, my band boys had our trousers almost ripped off by frenzy screaming young british girls! Daniel and his previous band members may have also been given a dose or two of this! Thy virginity threatened!

Those were the early days of “Beattle Mania”, Siva Choy and his brother(The Cyclones) were our fronting singers. Goodness,we went through that patch in life without a scratch!

My band disbanded in 1963 as most of us left the country for further studies. This was the case for many others too such as the original, The Quests,The Checkmates.

Matthew & The Mandarins, Vernon,Paul Cheong and many others surfaced from the years that followed. Some made it a career choice but none did well. Real sorry for them that flopped!

    Regards,
    Edwin Chen

  75. While most of you were busy clapping in unison, I was busy tapping – rather checking the common taps outside the wash-rooms. There were 8 taps, all push-taps & all working well.

In the case of Mathew’s fortune, I take a different view.

He was successful for an artiste of his times when arts & music were largely a hobby otherwise ignored and not given the active support & recognition they get today.

He still had a fulfilling 17-year run at shangrila’s peacock, to me a feat unparalleled in itself.

Perthaps, country music wasnt catching on so he had to finally step aside for the screamers annointed as kings & queens fr heavens without having to do much to impress………..If he had a bit more biz acumen & luck, probably he wd hv succeeded like Wang Ching Yuen, Wang Li….. regrettabe but not in anyone’s control.

    Fate?

  76. Hi Joy!

Thanks for being the first to draw our attention to the concert. Although I was late and only managed to catch Vernon’s performance, I enjoyed every minute of it.

The tune of “I can’t get no…satisfaction” was ringing in my head as I made my way to work on Monday morning – it’s a nice way to start a new work week. I hope that they will organise more of such concerts in future.

  77. Hi Angela

Hope to meet you at one of the upcoming SHC activities. I told my colleagues about my visit to Zouk and you should just see the look of disbelief in their eyes. Then I told them about the oldies (but goodies) performing. Hee hee..

    Joy
