Finding ways to take advantage of the internet

In the past, we rely on letters, postcards, meetings.  Today, we have the internet.  SHC promotes the use of the internet and email.  More than 99% of our members have email addresses.  But, many are not comfortable with using the internet for other purposes.  SHC has tried online webchats; but this has not been successful.  Well, let’s try again.

The benefits of SHC webchats:

  1. A great e-learning activity.
  2. Enables you to contact members from other parts of the world.
  3. Enables you to give small seminars to the SilverHairs, from your home.
  4. Enables you to teach your favourite subject, to the world.

I have just enabled the star-conference software, and if you have successfully downloaded this program on your computer, you will hear a radio program.  Successful users will be invited to participate in SHC webchats, participate in seminars and give talks and presentations.

Successful users, please let us know here.  Click here to start.

  1. WHY IS ONLINE WEBCHAT NOT SUCCESSFUL??

Because, one have to have internet access to be online at that particular time and date. Whereas, email or website forum allows flexibility – one can choose when to read or response as and when time permits.

  2. I always feel that webchat is like too many ppls talk at the same time, as such, at times, vry difficult to concentrate.

Moreover, sound/voice visibility also play a part to a successful webchat.

  3. Some of our Singaporean SilverHairs counterparts live in China, Australia, Vietnam, India, Malaysia and Philippines. A number of them have interesting experiences to share, especially on their experiences on living overseas for short 3 months period. We too have many “How to?” questions.

A series of online meetings will be organised in the coming months. To participate, do test out “SHC Online”, to make sure your PC is ready for these series of meetings.

All programs will involve you having your speakers working, so that you can hear the presenter. Voice and video are not fantastic, so these features are disable. You will be able to contact the presenter via textchat.

The first live and online presentations are likely to come from China, Australia and Thailand. Another great way to meet more overseas Singaporean SilverHairs.

    Have fun.

  4. Its may not be just the technology. Look into creating topics, content and issues which have both depth and breadth.

Watch Ophray, Letterman and even Martha’s talk shows. You will have a idea of the type of topics which can can sustain extensive webchat grouptalk.

Also consider taking smaller less ambitious steps. Start by allowing graphics and photos. Illustrated forums will provide 90% of benefit of multimedia chatline at only 10% the complexity.

Take http://forum.physorg.com/ for example. A single post can have up to 40,000 comments over very complex illustrated scientific issues. If you can deal with this content depth, you can deal with anything.

  5. This forum is still my pick.

Lily is relevant when she opines that “email or website forum allows flexibility – one can choose when to read or response (sic) as and when time permits”.

For making a point I totally agree, she isnt cluttering this thread. Keep them coming……….

  6. The “Introduction to Computers and Internet” is published for public use by the Internet community on GrassRootsDesign’s website at:

Please share it with those who may find something new to learn, irregardless of “newbies” or “knowies” (those who already know ;)
