roller-blading

Hello, skating enthusiasts,

I posted my response to you at Outdoor Activities, having decided that I posted my earlier comments in Forum, which might not be appropriate. I was also  not allowed to cut and paste, so, I’m inviting you to read my response at Outdoor Activities, in case some of you think that I had not responded to your queries about this Sunday.

I will be 55 on Sept 11 this year, 2012! Been busy as anyone would be esp near/around exams, which is never far one from the other. Oct-Dec would be mths I'm less busy. My household is myself, my dog and a tenant. My hobbies are few: table tennis, roller blading, movies/tv (selectively), and taking my dog on walks.

  1. Hello, Caroline, Ah Nee, Nor, Ronald,

I had a wonderful time at EC with you all. Age is no barrier to learning anything! Caroline, you’re gutsy and you pick up fast! The rest of you have also picked up the theory part, since you haven’t got your skates yet.
    Here’s the site: http://www.skateline.com.sg/newsletter/20070817

Even for me, sometimes, I have to deliberately fall down just so I remember to get into that position. What do you think? if you practice falling down often, would you fall less? ;)

  2. Hi Hannah,

The last time I put on a pair of roller skates was ions ago! Afterwhich, I bought myself a motorised mini scooter and was happily scootering along the EC for some time. Till one day, a park warden stopped me to warn that I am not supposed to ride it in public parks. So, I gave it to my Pastor to scoot around his campus!

Hope to find a used pair of motorised roller skates with cable and hand controls.

    Have fun,cheers! Edwin Chen

  3. Hi Hannah,

Thanks for sharing your roller blading experiences today. I hope I can master the skill soon so that 3 of us, Caroline; Nor and myself will skate along EC and say hi to Hannah and Ronald! :) he…he…eee will this dream comes true……

    Hi Edwin,
You are so cute… if I am still very lousy on my roller blade, could you kindly pass your motorised roller skates to me. Let me experience the thrill of scootering along EC leh.. can? :)

    Ah Nee.

  4. Hi Hannah,

Thanks for sharing some tips it was fun trying to follow what you do.

Will join you all again when I can, keep up the good work to coach Nor, Ai Nee and Caroline, but dont let them overtake me too fast lah.

Ai Nee, in roller blading it is to use your own body power so that you work out at he same time, no other power unless it is your body heat.

    Cheers

  5. Hi Ai Nee,

You are really gutsy huh? Just like me, I will try anything new. Alright, I will surely pass you the motorised skates when I have it. Meanwhile, try to skate the usual way. It gives your body a good trim. If you like, I will try to skate with you..but tuesdays or thursdays only!

By the way, if you can’t find good balance on roller blades, try roller skates first. Starts you off with more confidence.

If you can swim, next try water skiing at the Ski Club, its fun! Twin skis first!

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  6. Hi Hannah,

Thanks for the great learning experience. I really enjoyed that first outing on the blades. Though I had three great “bumps”, surprisingly they did not cause damage to my enthusiasm, though the arm is still a little sore from falling “wrongly”.

I am looking forward to the next lesson with Ah Nee and Nor.

Thanks again Hannah for the great time.

Btw Hannah looks at least 10 years younger than her age. So if roller blading keeps you fit and looking younger, I think more of us should put on the roller blades and start cruising.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  7. Ooops!..im the only one havent ‘cakap2’..busy lah morning2

Hannah…thank you so much for our racky lesson,
    u such cool woman..soft spoken,gentle & yet tough!
    Caroline..u’r a great ‘student’u skate quite well on yr very 1st lesson!..bravo!
Ah Nee..think we better borrow our kids’skates lah..don buy yet, when get the hang of it,then we ‘invest’ ok
Ronald, how can we take over..u will always be yourselves what?.the ‘Charles Bronson’ of SHC..the macho guy!..but u must ride a Norton, not Edwin’s scooter lah!…hahaha :)…sori Edwin!

  8. Hi Norlinda,

Some few years ago, a friend of mine started a small shop near Clementi Central importing and selling mini-scooters. Two models were available. Model 1, single stroke petrol engine.Very noisy. Model 2, electric motor powered by a 12volt battery. Silent. Also started a kiosk on Sentosa offering rides. It fizzled out, he went bust!

The business did not take off partly because of LTA’s over zealous regulations and rulings governing the usage of such leisure vehicles. Otherwise, you will see me joining forces with him to offer more interesting motorised practical mode of conveyance similar to the ones currently in use everywhere else but…. Singapore.

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  9. “…….it was fun trying to follow what you do”.

Ronald, it wont be fun to see you doing it seated alone when all of us still do it standing side by side….

  10. Ladies, thanks for your compliments! I don’t know that there is 1 single element that makes one look youthful; some form of exercise that involves workout helps a lot; keeping in touch with oneself (involves processing your thoughts, feelings) keeps one mentally/emotionally stable and alive; and others…

Caroline, I do have a few scars to show for myself after all these years; thankfully, nothing serious. Don’t make it a habit to look down, keep your head up. When you get trained enough to glide on the main path, there will be other ‘obstacles’ you need to keep your eyes on.

Yes, Ah Nee, I also think it’s safer if you wear a helmet. The lady in her 50s I told you about learned it all on her own reading a hobby book borrowed from the library!

Nor, the key to not falling is keeping a low CG (center of gravity); bend your knees slightly, hold your arms out for balance (like surfing), + short people already have a low CG (I’m also referring to myself :))

Ronald, you are also gutsy. I don’t think you’re there yet, but, I know of a 60-something yr old man who rollerblades at EC.

    :) hannah

  11. Hello hello,

Welcome the sports-mad Renne to join our East Coast Crazy Kakis. As Caroline is one step ahead of us, I am very happy you could accompany me to fall……:)

    Looking forward to roller blading.
    Ah Nee.

  12. Hi, Rene,

You are welcome to join the roller-kakis after Oct on Sunday. I teach all day Sat till 5, so only Sunday for skating.

Ah Nee and Nor may wish to borrow a helmet if that makes you feel secure. Otherwise, I suggest you practice falling properly several times.

I hope the weather permits us to do it again this Sun.

    :)
    hannah

  13. hi Hannah..
any chance of doing sunday afternoon than morning?…nvm if cant, just trying my luck :)
Ah Nee/Caroline…can stay back till later so that i can join pls…i shud be back by 3pm?.. boleh tak? :)

  14. hello, Nor

I usually get my housework done in the afternoon, then, go out to dinner with mom. We can give it a try, this Sun start around 2, finish by 5. How’s this timing with the rest of the ladies?

  15. Ai yo yo Nor. 2pm very hot hor. Kena pangang like the BBQ chicken wings at the Lagoon hawker centre lah!

I dont know about the rest but I will give this lesson a miss.

See you all the next next lesson.

    Enjoy :D

  16. Dear all,

The timing is ok for me, but not ok for Caroline. Lets compromise, instead of 2.00 pm, may be starts at 3.00 pm, not so hot by then. Also that place we are practising are shaded by row of trees at the side, so I think not that hot lah. How?

    Ah Nee.

  17. Hello all,

Can everybody make up your minds? 3 is too late for me. Morning in fact as early as possible is best but sometimes I’m also not so disciplined. 8:30 was my earliest. 9nish is just nice.

Cannot please everybody. I hope to see some of you this Sunday morning.

    Hannah :)

  18. Hi Hannah,

Back to the original plan, we will meet you at the same place, same time..SPST:)See you

Btw Caroline, if you are driving, should park your car at EC carpark F1. That’s the place we learn the roller blading.

    Ah Nee

  19. Caroline,

The carpark directly at the end of the learner’s track(where I took you) is a free car park, if you get a lot. Otherwise, the nearest paid car park is the one just outside the Hawker’s Ctr.

Ah Nee, the visor at Tampines bazaar is selling at $8/piece.

see you ladies tomorrow around 9. use sunblock!

    hannah

  20. hello Ah Nee, Caroline,

You both are an encouragement to all ladies over 45! No need for gung-ho attitude, just put on proper guards, and you’re on the way. That stretch is good for some gliding (Caroline, you’re catching on fast), until you’re ready, I will be telling you of the many ‘obstacles'(both human, nature) that you need to be aware of before you get on the common bicycle track. You’ve already heard some; it takes practice to ovecome them all! one obstacle at a time of course…

    see you tomorrow…
    Hannah :)

  21. Rene,

Lai leh, you and Norlinda sure no problem wan. Both of you very sporty, one scale mountains and the other climb trees, how to leave you behind. Come and join us soon hor, very fun you know :)

    Ah Nee

  22. Hello hello,

Calling all the roller blade enthusiast, is time to fall in and start rolling. Our roller blade pro, Hannah has reminded me yesterday to resume our roller blading. Caroline, Rene, Norlinda & the only guy, Ronald Wie, where are you all? Better start exercising to keep fit and healthly. Hannah said she will be at the usual roller blading track every sunday at 9.00 am. :)

    Ah Nee

  23. Wei wei Ah Nee

I want to go back to roller blading. But I still get the occasional dizzy spell leh. I will take one week at a time. I will walk over to ECP with my blades and if i feel ok, I will roller blade, otherwise, i will sit out the session.

    Hi Hannah

Welcome back. Hope you had a great time in Australia. Will arrange with the gang and meet you there.

  24. Hello,

Ah Nee, remember your words in this post? you set yourself a goal in rollerblading…go for it, girl…doesn’t matter how much time, with just the right amt of attitude, determination, you’ll get there some day!

Caroline, you certainly know what you need! You took the initial challenge, now, it’s moderating yourself around the sport!

As for the rest, everyone has their levels of fear towards this sport. Recognizing the fear is 1/2 the prob solved. I’m not a ‘pusher’ of anything, I usually do ‘reality checks’; either you tell me you’re ready for it/more, or you’ll know it yourself and ‘roll’ with it.

As for me, I believe I almost made 3 km on Sunday, discovering the new park connector joining EC with Changi Coast up to Pasir Ris. The on/off drizzle/rain at times kept me on my toes, either to avoid being totally drenched (not wash-out) or avoid the wet puddles (as opposed to just wet) all skaters must be careful of. I didn’t make it all the way – unfamiliar paths are better explored dry, not slippery! Although there are some cyclists, this path is relatively new, quiet and secluded, not for learners.

What was exhilarating was the long stretch of smooth tarmac for gliding on!

Ok, Caroline, Ah Nee, Nor, Rene, etc…, are you ready to ‘fly’ like the wind?

    hannah
p/s as for my time in Australia, will share when we re-group again!
    :)

  25. Thanks Hannah. The weather recently makes it so much more difficult for us learners.

Yes, we will meet and roller blade and then makan and you can tell us all about your trip.

    Ah Nee, Nor and Rene???
