Looking for Montfort School classmates

I started my Primary One at Montfort School in 1962.  If you have been in this school for the six years of primary education and four years of Secondary, come join in.  I remembered some of us still have unfinished fights behind the wall, and the good old days when we go down Ponggol Road to catch "Bua Ki crabs".

For those who do not know, in those days, Montfort School is a boys school, all the way to Secondary Four.  Then, that’s when we get a shock to find girls during the next two years of Pre-U.  And, that’s when the results start to drop.

  1. Is it an invasion into a monk’s fort that brings such state?

    Joyous or higher purpose, haha?

Then the family planning institute started not far way along Dunearn Road?

  2. Terence, i didn’t know we had links that far. You said you were in Pr.1 in 1962. Incidentally, that was the year when Montfort School had its first batch of Pre U 1 class under the late Bro. Philibert& Bro Thomas. I remember there were four girls in the class. They were recruited from St. Joseph’s Convent after completing their ‘O’ level. And that was the first time Montfort School had girls in their classrooms. Yes it was an unusual sight but i don’t remember it affected adversely the school’s academic performance. In fact, there were two Colombo Plan scholars in my year and those that did their ‘O’ level whilst i was there, also did pretty well. Lim Boon Heng, Lee Boon Yang, Augustine Tan, and many others scored in their results. Yes ,the school had inculcated strong Christian values in its students. It had also given Singapore quite a number of priests, including Archbishop Nicholas Chia. Its motto “Age Quod Agis” – Do well in whatever you do.

  3. Charles,

Sounds that you are 10 years my senior. But you definitely look young. I love the school’s motto, and I remember it to this day.

I had a teacher Bro Anthony. He used to tell his students “Study hard and you will do well. But if you do not, it does not mean you don’t have a future, you just have a different future”.

In my class in Pre-U, we had 2 girls. But I was always eyeing the girls from the Arts class. Maybe that’s why I did not do well. I had 5 distinctions for my O Levels, don’t mean to show off, but if I don’t, nobody knows. Then, I had a one A, one B and one C for my A levels. Spent too much time chasing girls.

Let’s see whether got other Montfort students. We should catch up at the next old boys gathering.

  4. So you were also imbued with Christian values and teaching, Terence.

Those days in the 60s to gain 5 distinctions, esp A1 are rare. So you were a rare breed. 6-8 pointers are precious lot!

Today results are different with all the convenience and availability of … in a first world country.

Charles does not look like in his early 60s!

  5. Hi Charles,

You owe Terence and AndrewK a cup of coffee each. They are full of compliments for you. Hey, you not on PC. Tell us your beauty secrets. Start a new thread, eh, on keeping youthful. (I think he can’t sleep tonight).

  6. Hi Terence,

I was an old boy of Montfort School too from 1965 till 1974. For your update, Bro Anthony Loh left the Gabrielite Brothers and had since got married with a son. He had been a Senior Inspector of School and appointed Principal of various secondary schools like Clementi Town Sec School. Now, he is known as Dr Anthony Loh.
