  1. Hi Juliana and Seok Cheng, looking forward to meet up with both of you. Juliana, I do play Chinese Chess, the other member I know also play is Daniel Chan.

I will standby a Chinese Chess set to play with you.

Tim, come and liven up our meeting!

    Dan

  2. Hi Lawrence Lee,

Welcome to the Club. ‘Golf’ game is no more included as Mary Chan is unable to come. Don’t worry, I see you also have interest in learning ‘French Tarot, ‘Rummy O’ and Chor Tai Tee.

The location is at the Cafe on the 2nd floor going up by the escalator. Address is 81 Victoria St. Flank by NTUC Income Building on one side and Allson Hotel on the other side, directly opposite Carlton Hotel.

Terence, can the old post comments be merged with the new. It confusing to get comments from both posts!

    Dan

  3. Hi Dan #4,

Unfortunately, I do not know how to merge the comments. Once a new post is created, the new Post will have its own comments. I would suggest you mention the old Post in your new Post, and close the old Post.

We have 2 travel sets and will gladly bring them along to the meeting (even if it means that we have to lug them with us). You see , we both have to attend another meeting during the earlier part of the afternoon.

  5. Hi Amy and Lynn,

  9. Hi Marilyn,

Welcome to the Club and to our monthly gathering. Yes, you may just turn up on that day and our Registrar for that day, Joy will give you a name tag and introduce you to all the other members.

Have you decided on the Board games you are keen to particpate?

    Dan & Joy

  10. “……. I am a brand new SHC member and am interested in join in the gathering. Do I just turn up and introduce myself?”

Sengh started the then new SHC as a new founder and every one of us had to be new at the beginning but this “new” experience wont be new for too long cos you’ll soon be worn out by the many activities which folks organise such as swinging the golf club on a bicycle from Toa payaoh to east coast, from dinner @ hans cafe to dancing at kovan and maiding merman at kelongs…….

So yes, just turn up next Wed and we being the spontaneous type you’ll hv us turned on easily and finally get our heads turned by yr leaving like cinderella at the chime of midnite…………

  11. Hi Dan, Joy & Tim,

Thanks for your welcome messages. Have not touched board games for many years, but did enjoy Scrabble, Monopoly in my younger years. Looking forward to making new friends next Wednesday.

  12. Hi Ann Lim, Janet Heng, Bobby Yee, Anna Seet, Tan Chin Boon, Shirleen Kao, Margaret Lee, Helen Lee, Alfred Ang, Thomas Goh and Abel Tan looking forward to meet all you folks.

colour card game, I am keen to refresh. Thanks.

  14. Agnes Seow, you are in for chit-chat.

Ann, I forgoten about ‘see sek’, anyone of the baby bloomers still remember, come and teach us.

Sophia, what do you fancy learning or playing?

Daniel Ong, welcome to the Club. We are looking forward to meet you.

    Dan

  15. Hi Dan,

  18. Hi Jie, June Chin, Francis, Catherine and Peter Goh, glad you can come.

To those coming and have not indicate your interest in the Board games, please do so. We need to make some preparation in order to ensure we have sufficient games sets.

Anyone know of any interesting games and want to share with us, please come forward. We are stll looking for somebody to teach ‘see sek’ and ‘Wei Gi’ and ‘Backgammon’!

Games leaders, please bring along the game sets you are in charge of.

    Dan

  19. Dan

Pls note that I can only be at SMU around 7pm. Pls get someone to ‘stand in’ to teach chor tai tee for time being. I am sure there are being good ‘teachers’ around willing to teach.

    Cheers

  20. Maggie, noted your coming later. Hope someone else can teach, otherwise I will do it.

Albert Tan, will you be early, do bring along your chinese chess set.

Jonathan, sorry how could I missed your imposing self. I know you are into chess and checker right?

Chengpun, see you tomorrow and what game is your fancy?

    Dan

  21. If I cd make it, will bring Snakes n Ladders. Be rest assured that the snakes will be of exotic species and for the ladders……no fireman will dare climb them………..

  22. Hi Dan and all,

Dont forget to bring your laptop so that I can demo the game ‘Word racer’ which is an online game. As I think I am fairly good in this game, already played against other online gamers, anyone who can beat me at this game will get a free drink from me at SMU cafe only, max $3 per drink.

    Cheers

  23. Tim, your name still up, play snakes and ladders also can!

    Patrick Yeo, see you around.

Ronald Wie, will lug my laptop along. Anyone keen to take on the challenge with Ron Wie with a higher stake?

    Dan

  24. Sorry for the delay, just got this information for those intending to drive to SMU Admin Building.

  25. Hi fellas SHCians,

Tomorrow is our monthly gathering with focus on Board Games!
Look out for the following games leaders:

Word Racer – Ronald Wie (Need to have your own laptop)
Chor Tai Tee – Maggie Teo
    French Tarot – Andrew Thio
    Rummy O – Grace Wong
    Scrabble – Lydia Chin
    Upwords – Lynn Chan
    International Chess – Dan Huang
Snakes and Laddles – Tim Liu

Tim, by popular demand you can’t help but come!

Don’t forget your name tags. Not into any games but chit-chating, you are most welcome. See you folks at the Wild Pot Cafe from 5.00pm!

    Dan

  26. As you Danz in Joy there’ll always be Joy in (the) Danz but then it’s still not a reason to hang me on death row 12, worst, putting a ladder for snakes to climb and hang with me.

Have not been seeing you guys since the CNY lunch and will certainly make an effort to join you all………if can make it, will be in the 7 pm circa.

Joy, will lead you to a dark corner and show you what a snake can do………I wont mind if Danz stands on the ladder to peep………..and so learn more patterns than what a staid missionary knows. Heeee………

  27. “……..hv jus learn how 2 play rummy-O. Can we hv a game?”

Often, new learners dont play well and the naughty ones tend to cheat a bit.

So in this case, be prepared that he will crouch a little, lift up his shirt, point to his tummy and start O-o-o-oooing away, complaining abt the kopi-O he drank in the morning. Be told, it’s an old trick…..and when you are so distracted to his tummy, his hand slips in and is home & dry with the rummy-O…

  28. Hi Dan

Just got back from my trip this morning and have cancelled my Lince Dance class tonight….sooooo if I am still ‘alive’ by this evening I would drop by for the gathering

    Sockie

  29. Hi Dennis and Sockie,

Never too late, wonderful to have you in our midst!

Sockie, just hope that as usual you will be happily gun-slingling your camera on us?

    Dan

  30. “I’ll look for my old Scrabbles Set…no promise that I can find it…………..” Huh, you better find it otherwise everyone will be very sad, with their jaws sagged, they’ll have your back smacked before putting you into a gunny sack with some rats and then pn top of the garbage there’s where you’ll be stacked until yr darling calls the polis to bring you back all bcos you didnt look hard enough for the scrabble set as you wonder why made the promise and what the heck………………

  31. It was not like the usual gathering with no agenda but chit-chating and meeting new members and bonding with the old! Our first monthly gathering with focus on board games turned out better than expected.

There was about three groups of members taught to play Chor Tai Tee or ‘Big Two’ leads by Dan and Maggie. The ‘Upword’ game similar to ‘Scrabble’ was fully engrossed in by Lynn, Amy, Lydia and Tim. ‘Rummy O’ leads by Grace found a good followings, shout of victory were heard whenever a game was won. ‘Rummikub’ leads by Marg Tian too was just as hilarious when a player scored points!

Andrew Thio as usual have a group learning to play ‘French Tarot’. Without a player to play online ‘Word Racer’ Ron Wie was connected with Robert and Christy who was both at home to play the game with him!

At another corner we have a group of girls eagerly learning to play ‘Gin Rummy’. It may seems we are going through our second childhood but we all enjoyed ourselves thoroughly!

Out of 71 persons who signed up to come, we have 83 persons who turned up. 24 of them just appeared and about 7 were non-members.

I am not sure if this trend of board games should continue, but will let our members decide.

    Dan & Joy

  32. Hi Andrew

Thanks for teaching the French Tarot but unfortunately I did not learn from the beginning and kinda joined in the middle of your teaching. Perhaps you can show me how to play the game at the next gathering.

    Cheers

  33. HI Dan,

We all sure had a swell time last night, didn’t we? Thanks for organising. And specially to Joy, who sacrificed her dinner time @ the registration counter. My special note of thanks goes out to Lynn & Amy, who taught Tim & myself, the Upword game. Now we know that we can use such words as “oe..oa…hea.. squag..” and it goes up all the time. I’m so glad to hv met Lynn & Amy, who has so kindly “given” me a spare set to bring home too… I’m so blessed. I could not find my old scrabble set in the morning, ended going home with a new game. Now.. i’m looking for kakis to play Upword.. Any takers?

    Cheers, L.

  34. Hi Dan
Sorry for missing the gathering last nite and not informing you earlier.

My apologies as I had an urgent family matter to attend to.

However, I am looking forward to the Soo Kee Clan lunch.

    Regards
    Caroline Gee

  35. Hi Andrew,

Thanks for teaching the French Tarot. Gone through the rules of the game, seam quite complicated. Would love to learn further and play an actual game. Perhaps you can call your regulars and show how the actual game is being played.

Grace, Thanks for teaching us Rummy-O. Very interesting game that needs quick mind and wide vision. If you have the rules of this game please email to me at llee@photos.com.sg

Didn’t have time to look into the other games.

Thanks to Sockie who introduced me to SHC, – didn’t see at this meeting!!

Thanks to Dan & Joy for organising this meeting. I vote to continue this board game meeting.

    Cheers

  36. Dear Danz n Joy

Yes, we enjoyed ourselves very much at the Rummy-O game.Must admit that we were quite rowdy cos of the clapping and praise to whoever wins!Yes, the board game should continue.

Thanks to all who were there, JanetH.

  37. Hi Lydia,
Glad to know that you enjoyed the game of UPWORDS with us but I really need to correct you. The words you quoted are not all accepted, only OE is.
OE is a whirlwind off the Faeroe islands (Scrabble Dict)
Perhaps you mean to quote SQUAB or QUAG which we played.
    SQUAB is a young pigeon
    QUAG is a quagmire
Just thought I should let you know before you start forming the other words thinking that they are acceptable.
Maybe you might want to grab a Scrabble Dictionary too.
Lynn and I often (out of desperation)invent words and then take a challenge. You can imagine our joy when we discover that the word actually ‘exists’.
    Have fun.

  38. Hi Dan and Maggie,

I didn’t get to play what I had originally intended.
Instead, I learnt the ‘Chor Tai Tee’.
Thanks for your patience in teaching me.
I agree with Andrew #70 that strategy is indeed difficult.

    Thanks for an enjoyable evening.

  39. Hi Lawrence,
Glad u’v found the game stimulating.I suggest u buy a set at Toys R Us.It costs only $19.90(no share in co.).instead of me emailing u the rules..very lecheh ley..anyway we can bend the rules at the different levels of competence…for beginners an easier set…like we can have a base of 30 pts by combining pts wth other players..if we r more advanced we can change it by just sticking to our own set of 30 pts, no allowance of latching our tiles wth another player. This makes it more difficult for the player .More challenging..dont u think? These r house rules which I think we can bend according to the competence level of the players. You will get the hang of the game if u play it more often wth the different combinations of colours & nos.
    Hi Dan & Joy,
Thanks for manning the Registration Table & organising the Board Games Theme.I think we should carry on as these r powerful stimulators for our brains to keep Alzeimers away from our doors & in good company too!
Thanks for a fun & companionable evening!

  40. Hi Dan,

Sorry I could not make it to the gathering….still recuperating from the Indonesia trip hahahahaha

    Lawrence #74
