come join me in Yangon this Nov 6-10 or 12

Today Sun is probably one of my 15 trips this year to Yangon, the commercial city and former seat of the Myanmese government. I was so tired after a late night on Friday, enjoying the drinks and food, and celebrating Singapore Nation Day at the famous Sedona Hotel. It was kind of nostalgic celebrating our ND, with the dignitaries and ambassors in a foreign country, and listening to Majullah Singapore. And today, I spent the entire Saturday with a friend, enjoying the food delights of Yangon Chinatown. I had a rich tasty bowl of minced duck porridge, a big peech, a durian which is different from that of Thailand, a grilled fish, perfect in everyway, two solid meat bakchangs and two ang gu kuays.

Reflecting on the last two days, I sensed for many of us, the scenes, the food, the people and the old ways, would bring back memories 35-40 years ago.

There are many Singaporeans who have set up home in Myanmar. There is a Singapore Club called SAM, and there is a Singapore kitchen for anyone who is homesick. It’s the home of Singaporeans. Many speak Myanmese, as fluent as I speak Thai.

It daunts on me that Myanmar is the last country to open itself up to the world. Other than N Korea, Myanmar is the place to explore now. Myanmese love Singapore and Singaporeans. Because there are hotels built by Singaporeans, there are Singapore banks and there areSingapore investments. Singapore offers education to Myanmese and many work and study in Singapore.

See how the gals apply a natural powder on their faces, tightening their skins and how pleasant they are. The guys are handsome, if that’s what you are looking at.

A bowl of streetside noodles would cost 50 cts to 1 SGD. Enjoy the taxi without aircon, and for an extra USD1, you get the aircon turned on.   Many famous temples all over the country. If meditation is your like, Myanmar is the place. Off design jade at USD1 per piece.

There are two ways to get to Yangon. Direct from Spore on Jetstar, or from the old Bangkok airport Donmuang. Booked the right time, the air tickets are a great price for now.

Obviously, being an old city, it has cockcroaches, big ones too. No super highways like the KPE, it’s still a very nice old place. Yangon is growing, and before long, it will be like HCMC.

Take this opportunity to see Myanmar The markets are plentiful, plenty of Jade, no need to worry about fake jade.  The girls no longer wears jeans. They wear skirts, just like every young lady in Singapore.  Come speak Mandarin and Teochew.

I plan to go in Sept, but the more suitable date is in Nov. Weather is cool and dryer, so you can bring a jacket. I have also found a 4 star hotel, with a live band, where you can dance the whole night.

So, if you like to join me, please let me know. We will find a way to organise ourselves.

  1. Hi, Terence.
I’ve been there about 2 years back, but only once, and enjoyed the stay very much. Will certainly like to go there again preferably in Nov when it’s cooler.
    Thanks,
    Ronald Swee

  2. Any details of the trip in term of itinerary planned. I have been to Yangon, Inle Lake and Mandalay in 2012 on our own with personalised tour guides. Nice place to visit and took some photos too. Wanted and looking into some business ideas there but need partnership to consider. We stayed at Traders Hotel in Yangon city. There are lots of places to explore and see the “olden days Singapore” equivalent in Myanmar.

  3. hi Terence
have been wanting to visit Myanmar pls keep me in the loop too once the date is confirm.

Danny: am interested in the”business idea” too

    1. Why is Nov a good time to go to Yangon. Myanmar rains 4 months, with Nov being the start of the dry season. For many Asean countries, Nov is off peak. In Dec, you have to fight with business people, school holidays and holiday makers. So, it’s a Nov. Anyway, I go every month.

To start, not to dissuade you, but the two most expensive items are flights and hotels.

First, I would say a likely schedule for you is Sin/RGN/SIn, or
SIn/RGN/Bkk/Sin. Flights are Tigerair, jetstar, and Airasia (between old bkk airport and RGN). There is alo Flyscoot. Look carefully, and you can get a 300+ SGD for Sin/RGN/Sin.

Second, the hotels are out of the world pricing. There is a lack of hotels in the 4 and 5 starts. For business people, the pricing for a 4/5 star is around 150 – 280 USD. For tourist travel, I would not book any 3 star hotel. Not only cockcroaches, the staircases are flimsy, the toilets are for those who can float, and the rooms are usually musti or musky. What’s the word?

Luckily, today, there are a number of 3-star new hotels. Maybe, lack of amenities but thebedsheets are changed and clean. The walls are white and not colored brown. A 3 star hotel is around USD 50-60 per night for a twin room. We just have to plan ahead.

Taxis, food, supermarketing, you can afford them, no worries. Streetfood is about USD1 per bowl. A grilled BBQ fish with 36 bones, costs about SGD2. A durian costs about USD 1 or 2 each.

I have no intention of bringing anyone on a 4 or 5 star trip. 3 star years, but it must be clean. For those on business, ok, let’s do 4 or 5 star travel.
Streets are guaranteed to see cockcroaches and rats, don’t worry, they are edible and they tend to come from nowhere.

Think about it. The trip is 51% ON.

  4. Frisna,

Yes, I m looking into some business availability in Yangon. There are many opportunities out there but have to be very careful with the plan as we r not familiar with the business setup and costs analysis. Need to do a thorough planning before can embark on it. We can discuss when the opportunity arises, maybe Terence can help out in this way as he travels there every month as mentioned.

As for hotels, I still prefer the 4* rather than the 3*. Security is one main reason and next, why want to save on that little $ after all we are not going to stay there for 1 month or so. I can contact my Myanmar agency there to get for me hotel which might be cheaper than you walk-in. At the same time, I also would like to make some sight-seeing too for my photography if time permits. Still all in planning and have not finalised anything. Let see how Terence go about before I can embark on it.

  5. Hi Terence

Find your description of Yangon v interesting. I’m keen if the trip is in mid – end Nov. Pl keep me in the loop on details of the trip ~ number of days etc.

Prefers 4* hotel .. however, will follow the majority. May need a room-mate.

    Regards…

  6. Bro terence ,

    If timing match me….will 99% join u…been there almost 15 yrs ago….

Let go for de cheapest deal in everythings…

    Thks bro…..

    Cheer bro sam goh

  7. hi Terence
bira is interested too but please put both of us on tentative (when is the deadline?) first

Danny: I have got some idea what business we can do there (either via SHE or individually) will discuss with Terence separately

    1. Everybody’s comments noted.

Currency: Might sound strange but the Myanmese Kyatt is not easily available outside Myanmar. Some available at Peninsula Plaza.

Besides the Kyatt inside Myanmar, the common currency is the USD. You can get 1 USD = 1000 Kyatt at the Yangon airport.

      Inside Yangon, 1 USD is 900 – 950 Kyatt.

      1 SGD is 850 kyatt.
      Good luck.

If you are keen to join me to Yangon, note u need a visa. Go to St Martin Drive, opp Tanglin mall. Costs SGD 45. Apply before noon and you can get your passport back betw 4.30 and 5.30pm same day.

Bring 2 photographs, photo copy your passport and your IC both sides.

See you at the airport. Importantly, start finding a partner now.

      Terence Seah

    2. I guess many of you may not know. We have William chew. He is one if the co-founders of SHC. He lives in Yangon for more tan 20 years. Speaks fluent Myanmese. You will meet him and many other Singaporeans when you join me on this trip.

      Terence Seah

  8. Terence,

Is William Chew running a business in Myanmar (Yangon ???) ? Would like to get in touch with him to gather more info on the setup of small business and housing there, any email which I can discuss with him directly ? Thanks.

    1. Hi Danny,

During the trip, I would be pleased to introduce the group to William.

If you write on the forum, I am sure he will read it. Many Singaporeans ask him all sort of questions, and you can imagine how he feels. He is very busy every day. Hope you understand.

I will likely organise a lunch or dinner meeting with other SIngaporeans during the trip.

      Terence Seah

  9. Terence,

Is this a business “analysis” trip or sight-seeing trip ? Any confirmed details of arrangement or itinerary for planning ? Am keen to consider if the arrangement fits with proper planning.

From your write-up, if I did not read or understand you wrongly, we are suppose to meet you at the Airport (YGN or SIN) ? Flying there is no problem on my part as I can get the ticket easily provided the period is not heavy, just need advance booking. From there, are we suppose to gather together for a meeting to discuss business opportunities or for a sight-seeing trip or both ? Not clear on your explanation or I did not understand you.

  10. Halo bro danny lye & all

A very good morning.dont worrry about bro terence .

I have been on his previous thailand trip ,it real awesome & wonderful trip!

    Slow & steady…he will reveal more details..akan datang ….
Dun worry ,be happy…. Hope bro danny pls dun get offend ,my humble apologizes if i do ….

    Cheers from bro sam goh

    1. I am trying to work on the details of the Yangon trip. If you have some interests, please do say so. Dont be shy.

Hi Sam, glad you are alive. And you are right, I try to make trips different and enjoyable. I do release as much info as i know the moment i have them.

Hi Danny, i read every single word you write. I dont know what questions you have, but i can guess them. Will give a brief business on the Myanmese scenario for small business start-up in another comment. Go ahead and discuss your interests and questions here. I am sure there are other knowledgeable folks on Myanmar in SHC too.

      Terence Seah

      1. Thanks Danny and Frisna for igniting business ideas in Myanmar.

In recent years, many Singaporeans and entrepreneurs have established contacts and set up relationships in Myanmar. These businesses ranged from anything, small to big. A lot of startup monies enter the country.

There are concerns and these include many business laws which have not been passed. The second main reason for the current quiet pumping of more money is 2015. This will demonstrate how serious and democractic Myanmar will be. Because this is an important unknown factor, foreigners as well as Myanmese are unsure.

In short, I would describe the investment climate as, put in 10 to 20% of what you would, start slowly until mid 2015 and then bring in your balance.

What are Singaporeans involved in in Myanmar? Name it, from food to coffee mix, from logistics to manufacturing, from car washing to engine oil, and larger projects like hotels, construction and mining.

I am a member of SAM, Singapore assoc of Myanmar. You get invited to golf, laksa parties, wedding banquets and Singapore business groups. That’s where you meet people quickly and establish new contacts.

I wont say it is a poker game now, but if business is what you see, you need to establish a 51% foothold.

Although this trip is intended as a social and leisure trip, I shall include a business network meetup for those who are interested.

Myanmar citizens are mainly poor. The country is huge. The resources are huge. As the country grows, it needs many things.

We have a Singaporean who has set up an international school. You will be surprised atvtheir success.

We can have a golf day for those who are interested. We can have a sotong mee lunch. Maybe a visit to an elderly home, as a co visit with a major hotel run by Singsporeans. We sing and entertain the elderlies and the hotel provides transport and food. You get to mix with English speaking Myanmese plus the Singaporean management.

        More thoughts to come.

        Terence Seah

        1. I will adjust my stay to meet your request for firmed dates. Here’s my suggestions.

          Fly sin/bkk/rgn/sin or
          Sin/rgn/sin.

Must include a Sat and Sun, as traffic is good.

I think an Outbound Wed and a return on Sun is good. Airtickets are lower in price.

For those who have the time, check the flight costs and advise. Saves me headaches.

Let’s do this. The 1st 4 persons to suggest a firmed Out Wed and back Sun, i shall use the dates.

          Terence Seah

  11. Terence
I’ll be joining you on this Yangon trip; hope you could firm up the dates.
I have no problems with accommodation or food.
    Mega

  12. hi Terence,
Five of us Interested to participate subject to availability of travel dates, itinerary & some idea of activities… Marg Tien , Bessie Lam, Peggy & Arthur Yap, Charles Wee.
    thanks for organizing.

  13. You mentioned only the days Wed to Sun which is nice. There’re 4 of us – me, Peri ,Theresa and Ann, provided the dates are suitable since some of us are outstation in some parts of Nov. We pray for good dates. Cheers!

  14. Hi Susan,

I understand everybody is busy. If the 4 of you fix the dates, then we will use it. What would the group prefer?

Others can join a day or two before the 4 days.

The Myanmese rats are coming out.

    Terence Seah

  15. Hi Susan,

I am off to Guangzhou tonight. If your group of 4 is still ok with the dates, within 48 hours, then the dates are confirmed.

Others can add 2 days before or after the 4 days.

    Thank you for the response.

    Terence Seah

  16. Terence,

My wife and myself will consider to join the group provided she can be released during that period as end year is approaching and she has to do her year end accounting. Suggest another alternative dates 13-17 Nov should be good too, anyone agreed ? Are we only staying at Yangon and not moving to other areas eg Haho, Mandalay, etc ? If there is a schedule itinerary to guide us on the trip will be much better so that we can plan better.

  17. hi Terence for business not urgent just look see first.
for dates I agree going 6th back 10th I might leave on 4th first. wonder if we can all do it together for 1 week and include Mandalay?
silk air fly to rgn too

  18. Hi Terence,
This trip looks interesting. Please count me in. I am trying to reschedule my flight so that I can fly with group from sg.

    Thanks.
    Ivy

  19. Hi Terence

Wd appreciate if you could confirm the dates of the trip ASAP? Hope date of departure will be anytime from 6 Nov 2013.

    Tks & regards.

  20. Trying my luck… how about 20/11 to 24/11/13. Anyone with me on these dates? Its the last week before school holidays, and its about the only slot in November I am available for travel.

  21. Hello globe trotting Terence,

    Dates double-confirmed 6 – 10 Nov. Thanks v much.

Dear Frisna, wish I can go for a longer stretch, sorry about it. Maybe you can form a group which can stay longer and we will join you half way in the itinerary?

    1. The Yangon trip is ON. Dates are:

      * Arrival Yangon: Wed 6 Nov 2013
      * Departure Yangon: Sun 10 Nov 2013 (4 nights) and for those who have the time (extended to Tue 12 Nov 2013 – 6 nights). We will not go to Mandalay, but the extension may see us go to Napidaw, the much talked about Administrative Capital of Myanmar, so huge, it will be difficult to imagine without seeing it.

Thank you DaisyY and SusanT for helping with the ground work.
I think this is a good deal, and you should take Jetstar.

Leave Wed 6 Nov, the Sin/RGN price is $88 which includes baggage), you may not need it. Take this date, because I would like you to enjoy weekend in Yangon.
Leave Sun 10 Nov, the RGN price is $76.65 which includes baggage, and you definitely need it.
Leave Tue 12 Nov 2013, the price is about the same.

I will make myself available in Yangon Wed 6 Nov to Tue 12 Nov 2013. However, I shall go to bkk instead.

At a return Sin/RGN/Sin, the jetstar fare is a good rate at $164.65 (include baggage).

When you book your tickets, please let us know here on this forum. Also share with us the price you paid. It would be interesting.
Please also book a room mate. If you cannot find a partner, we will find you a c..kc….h partner.

No guarantee, but if you wish a 3 in 1, I think it can be arranged. Do say so, and we will try to arrange the room as such.
More info about rooms in 1-2 weeks time.

Dancing is included everynight, if you are not tired. So bring your dancing shoes.

      Terence Seah

  22. On this post, you will have noted that a rock has been added. Simply called the Golden Rock by Myanmese citizens. I had visited the Golden Rock twice, the first was with Ivan Lim two years ago. Ivan and I headed for the Golden Rock, approx 4 hours from Yangon. The journey is unbelievable bad, but I fell asleep along the way. Well, what I like to tell you is when we reach the foot of the hill, we had to change vehicles, not from car to car, but from car to truck. I am very familiar with these trucks, as I use to see them being used to ferry buffaloes and cows from one location to another. I just checked, it’s about 48 pax per truck, you know the type with 6 big wheels?

I am not too old. But Ivan is the younger guy. The trick is how to get up the truck without any stairs. Dont worry you will be safe. I almost sweared I wont go up to the Golden Rock again. but since you have not experienced the wonderful view, you should go up. Arrangements being made. EyvonneC, the wheels are higher than your height. I wonder if we can hoist you up the truck.

And, IvanL, if you are reading this, please give us some tips.

    Terence Seah

  23. Hi Terence,
Thank you for organizing this Mynmar trip. Sound interesting although I had been there once many years ago. Do count me in and if anyone looking for a room partner can email me at bobby88@gmail.com or wat app me. Don’t mind going 2 day earlier on 4 Nov 2013 or stay back for another 2 days if airline flight schedule and price fits in nicely. Cheer..
    Bobby Bok

  24. Dear SHC Friends,

    We’ve just booked Jetstar Flight 3K 585 (6 Nov); 3K 586 (10 Nov). $164.65 (excluding check-in luggage). Pay about $15 – $20 extra for check-in luggage (1-way).

    Cheers!

  25. Most people go up to the Shwedagon Pagoda, either in the morning, or afternoon. We are likely to go up at 5am, approx 15 mins from hotel, and return in time for breakfast. The pagoda lies to the west of Kandawgyi Lake, and dominates the city skyline. It is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda for the Burmese. Taking shoes off is a must.

This will be part of our travel.

    Terence Seah

  26. For those who have indicated strongly they are coming, your name is in the Post. I have no closing date yet, but shall work on it. I guess I shall do so once we identify the hotels.

There is no plan to go to Mandalay, but you can fly there after Sunday.

    Update.

    Terence Seah

  27. Hotel update on the Yangon trip:

There are two hotels which I would suggest:
    1. Hotel Summit Parkview – agoda gives you about USD 180. This is 4 star. I shall speak with the Singaporean GM, and we are likely to get a good rate, if there are rooms. I stay there often, and should meet most of your convenience. As our website is open to the public, I shall email those who are thinking of coming the estimated price. If I forget to email me, you can email me. Wireless internet is free. The quickest way to get an estimate of the room rate, is to email me.

    2. The other is a hotel, not well furbished, but is clean, bright and smacked right in the middle of Chinatown. This is also right in the city. You can get to eat from 6 am to 10pm, from grilled fish, to durians, porridge, bakchang, etc. for about a USD 1 each. Then, two shops from this hotel, you can have Jassmine tea or others for about USD 0.50 and chat the whole evening through. between the two hotels, the taxi fare is about USD 2. Hotel name is Kaung Su San Hotel. There are only 15 rooms in this hotel. The price is about USD 50 – 55. Wireless internet is free.

My recommendation is to stay at the Summit ParkView. I have not spoken to them yet, but for those who wish to stay 3 in 1, let me know. I believe it can be arranged.

Thousands of tourists and business people are flocking to Myanmar by the plane loads. Hotels rates have gone up from USD 60 to USD 260 in a short span of two years. Foreigners come here, invest in old buildings, renovate the place and offer them on short term lease to foreigners. So, to answer the question of when is the deadline, the quicker the better. When I get stuck, I shall let you know.

    Terence Seah

  28. Just a note to make your trip more comfortable. Terence has posted a picture above of the “Golden Rock” which is a must to visit when travelling to Myanmar. Not sure how many temples you all are visiting, but do take note that going into the temples require you to take off your shoes and walk around barefooted. Bring many packs of wet tissue to wipe your dirty foot before putting on your shoes after that. Also bring a pair of slipper, just in case you need to go to the toilet. Imaging going to the toilet barefooted…urg…..
Also on the day that you are going up to the top of the “Golden Rock”, it will be more appropriate and comfortable for ladies to put on pants/ jeans because you will be climbing up and down the truck……hahaha…have FUN :)

    Ah Nee

  29. Terence,

Your first paragraph ” If I forget to email me, you can email me.”, kekekekee.

Let us know when you forget to email yourself and we’ll email you………

  30. Hi Terence,
I have booked Jetstar flight 3K585 on 6 Nov 2013 and depart back flight 3K586 on 10 Nov 2013. It cost total $196.65 including additional 15kg of checked in luggage on return flight and additional $16 booking fee by Visa card. Look forward to the tour on 6 Nov. I had been up to the Rock before. After the uncomfortable trip by truck I recalled we still got to climb up for another hour or so by foot to the top of the summit. I understand some may not wish to undergo this rugged climb. Anyway we shall hear from the majority and it is fine with me with your itinerary for which I know will always be well planned and cater to our needs. Please also let me know if anyone need to share room. Best regards..
    Bobby Bok

    1. Hi Bobby,

It would be nice if we share the room. ok, with you?
      Keep your sharing coming in.

      Hi Ann Giri,
May sound disappointing, but wont be able to change the dates. We have moved ahead.
      Perhaps, another time.

      Terence Seah

  31. Oops, I forgot that sweet pie Peri & Ms Congeniality Ann are leaving Yangon on 12 Nov, not on the 10th.

Terence, can you kindly make the change? Thank you so much, and looking forward to my first time tour under our very own super EO. But I’m very scared of the extreme itinerary leh.

    Cheers!

  32. Hi Terence,
Thank you for your fast response. Yes I will be more than happy to share the room there with you although Daniel also email me to express his interest in the tour. But due to his tight schedule he is unable to confirm whether he would be able to join our tour and ask me to go ahead with my alternative plan. Cheers and best regards..
    Bobby

  33. Hi Terence

My daughter has helped me book the tickets but the price has gone up today ~ $218.65 altogether (with 20 kg check-in luggage and $16 visa charge). She’s my ticketing agent. Haha.

Do let me know the hotel when you have made the final decision.

    Tks and regards.

  41. Hi Terence,

    Jetstar 3K 585 (6 Nov) and 3K 586 (12 Nov).

  42. Hi Lin,

While updating the names of confirmed trippers, I saw your posting.

Please let me have the email addresses of the 3 of you to update regarding hotel room rates.

    Thanks and Best Regards,

  43. Hello Susan

Sorry to have ‘stressed’ you with the rejected emails. You see, I’m no longer at the workplace email. Please delete it from your contact list.

I’ve indicated my hotel preference in my email (the same email which I have registered with SHC). Thank you for co-ordinating.

    Rgds, maywoo

  44. Hi Terence,
Bira, Evon Lim and Meng Wai confirmed joining this Yangon trip 6-12 Nov.
They have booked with Jetstar flight 3K 585 and 3K 586. Thank you.

  45. I am shocked to see so many participants to the Yangon triip. We will endeavour to make it fun, enjoyable, romantic, relaxing and nostalgic. No other promises.

Please note we cannot take in anymore participants.

    Thank you so much.

  46. Now that the Yangon trip group is closed, I am more relaxed. Susan Tan has been cordinating with the Chinatown, and so far so good.

There are many markets in Yangon, and although I have been there many times, I have failed to explore the markets. Myanmar is full of jade, so take your time to look for a piece that you like. I believe you can get one from USD 1 to USD xxx. Dont worry about fake jade. It is not worth their producing fake jade.

Really, I dont think you should bring along nice shoes. A good pair of snickers or walking shoes would be good. Of course, a pair of dancing shoes too.

We will also spend half a day at Inya Lake, weather should be nice by then. Maybe we go boating, small boat.

I look forward to all who are coming and participating. In the spirit of SHC, the fun is to go out together, get to know one another better and the spirit of friendship.

  47. The small hotel has only 14 rooms – so far we are booking 10 rooms. We’ve got 21 registered so far.

I am told that the rooms are clean. If there are late comers they might have a problem getting a room.

  48. Dear Terence,
I had received an email from you that I am not a member of SHC. Kindly note that I had been a member since 2006. I am together with my buddies, eyvonne, maria, mary, josephine, clara, linda, dolly, yew kwong, tim liu ( just to name a few). I had also been in several SHC activities with my photo in the posts.
I had booked my air tix, paid my deposit of S$100 for the yangon trip.
Had there been a lapse somewhere, please enlighten me.

    Regards
    Julie

    1. Hi Julie,

I am most happy to have you and the group join me in Yangon. So, no worries about the trip.

The issue of membership is another issue. All members have been repeated asked to update their email statues, the moment they use a different email address. If the member does not update the email address, the membership lapsed. The Club does not remove a membership, except for failure to observe the Club taboos. A membership has been sent to you.

On this note, I would advise all members to update their email addresses in the Club profile and inform Admin accordingly.

  49. Hi Lily,

I am so touched that you still remember me. Yes, I enjoyed that very first trip and that was also the begining of my long and valued friendship with many other SHC members.

    Cheers
    Julie

  50. Hello,

For those who have yet to book your air ticket to Yangon, Jestar is offering one way fare at $48.00. Enjoy and happy holiday to ALL.

    Cheers

  51. Please be informed that we cannot accept anymore participants to the Yangon trip in Nov. We have already 21 pax. If we take anymore, the roads will collapse under the weight of our van.

There will be a briefing for all participants on this Yangon trip. The likely date will be the monthly gathering in Oct, once the EO has the date set. We will have an overview of Yangon, the places we have plans to visit, and where we can spend the whole day eating, sightseeing and enjoying the roadside activities.

Meantime, the group is discussing how to apply for the Myanmar visa, quickly and efficiently. Ideally, go at 1130 am M-F and you can collect the passport back by the same day between 4.30 an 5.30pm.

Susan Tan has been helping with the coordinating work; she is very efficient, so this has made my job easier.

  52. Dear Eunice Tay
Instead of starting a new post, I have pasted your comments here.

    Hi Friends,

I have registered for the Yangon trip to travel from 6th November 2013 to 10th November 2013. However, due to some reasons, I might not be able to go and looking for a lady to replace me on this trip. I have bought the air ticket travelling by Jetstar. If you are interested in going, please contact me for more details.

    Thank you.

  53. The Yangon trip has about a month to go.

In brief, we have our schedule in Yangon as follows:

6 Nov – Wed, arrival, Explore Chinatown
7 Nov – trip to Golden Rock (whole day)
    8 Nov – Yangon
9 Nov – Sat, Swedagon tourist spot, explore city, markets
10 Nov – Sun, time to leave for 1st group
    11 Nov –
12 Nov – Tue, time to leave for extended group

** 7 Oct, Golden Rock – this is almost a 3-4 hour trip, north and then south-east, to the base of the hill, followed by changes to trucks. We can also have people to carry us up. Now, this is a tough journey, and may require you to jump up to the trucks. Have to be relative fit, or we need people to carry you up which is recommended.

Some of chosen not to go for this trip. Those not going, please let me know by 15 Oct 6pm. A guide will be around to assist those who will remain in Yangon.

** traffic in Yangon can be terrible.

** Currency – if you can get Kyatt, go get it. If not USD. SGD is not as easy to change, not impossible. Money changers are not easy to find on a Sat and Sun.

** Visa – I hope everybody has applied for it.

** airport to Hotel – not many taxis know where is our hotel. Instead of a coach, we shall group in 4s, take a prepaid taxi, around USD 7. This is a small and difficult to find hotel. Please select a head for each 4 of you. See you at the hotel.

** Hotels in Yangon are very expensive, as limited. Our breakfast is slice of bread, a hot drink, maybe instant noodles on 2nd floor. Internet is excellent and free, as for password at reception. Make sure you have whatsapp, viber, etc to connect friends. Note this is a 3 star hotels, so expect cockroaches, crowded Chinatown. Ideally, for breakfast, there is a bakery 3 doors to the left of hotel, surprising not expensive. Further down there is a korean or Japanese rest, not expensive.

Plenty of fruits available as this is chinatown. Buy for your own room and share. Remember it is noisy and fun.

** All bills we settled daily, do not hold because it is complicated by exchange rate differences. Do so in small groups of 4, even for small tiny meals. There is so much to eat in Chinatown. We may have only one meal as a group and that is at Singapore kitchen, a local spore food court.

    * so the likely expense is the tour coach and entrance to Golden Rock and the entrance fee up to Swadagon temple and any tour guides.

    * hotel can speak Teochew or Mandarin. Few speak English especially young people.

    * Taxis anywhere around between 2500 to 5000 Kyatt.

    * Eat local, it is safe. Porridge, grilled fish, durians, tea, chille paste, we will have one lunch at a very local clean myanmar food. If you don’t mind, again small groups of 4 and share. Hundreds of choices. Leader please.

Everybody, it is your responsibility to carry your own bottle of water, can buy from supermarket. It is not convinent to buy and carry as a group.

And finally, when in trouble, please be patient. It can be chaotic. Light clothes, except pants or jeans when visiting temple. Temples you have to be bearfoot. Good to carry two plastic bags which fits your shoes.

    Have fun.

    1. Hi Ah Nee,

At the moment, our schedule is planned to be out the whole day and night during the whole period.
So, wont be able to fix any time. However, it is likely we can meet when we go dancing the first night at the Summit Park Hotel.
Will keep in touch with Michael.

      Terence Seah

  55. Wow dancing…..
Terence, it’s always very FUN to join your organised trip. I will inform Michael of the exciting happening at the Summit Park Hotel on the night of 6 Nov. Enjoy! :)

  56. The Yangon trip seems to have taken a toll on Susan Tan. She lost 0.5 kg trying to fit us into the number of hotel rooms. I think she deserves it, I mean to lose weight.

About 5 of the travellers have opt out of the Golden Rock trip because of wobbly knees. Another 17 pax will continue to go to the Golden Rock on 7Nov at 5am, after a night of dancing.

All of us will land in Yangon on Wed, and will spend the day eating, eating and eating in Chinatown. If you have been to Yangon, please share some tips and ideas for us. Any body knows where to buy jade for USD 1 a piece?

Michael emailed me that it has been raining the last few nights.

  57. Got a reality check when I saw myself on Taipei Night. Thanks to you for giving me this job, not only do I shed off some kilos, some hair too. You lor (pointing finger), just luv to throw this kind of shock and riddles. Ok la, I must do my part also.

  58. Hi Terence and Susan,

Thank you for organizing the Yangon holiday for us. Otherwise I wouldn’t have dreamt of going to the Golden Rock and praying at the great and magnificient Shwe Dagon Pagoda. And of course not forgetting having lots of fun with the seow seow SHC members, and looking forward to the next holiday at Sri Lanka.

    Cheers
    Jane Tan

  59. All travellers to Yangon are back safely in Singapore. I am in Bkk. One of the most exciting trip was the adventure to the Golden Rock. Most of us had to hold on to the railings attached to the truck. I was worried some of us would vomit, but the guys and the strongs girls got ourselves up the steep slope.

You may not believe it but I was lost at the Golden rock while everybody thought I knew the place and was snoring somewhere. They did not look for me. They even had lunch with me.

Let’s hear fron the other travellers.
