SilverHairsClub adopting the true kampong spirit

balik kampong

I was reading the ST today, and came across the phrase “the true kampong spirit”.  I thought that this tagline is interesting for SilverHairsClub members.  Very often, we engage in activities of the social nature, and we don’t target “self help and caring activities” for ourselves.  We have plenty on makan, dancing, karaoke, cycling, walking, chitchats and travel.

As a Club, we have not done much to harness ourselves for the benefit of SHCians as a whole.  Maybe the “true kampong spirit” can rekindle and strengthen ourselves as a big family.  I remembered Kenneth Tan suggested buying in bulk eg his monthly ovaltine supply, Jassmine Teo’s Teo selling of what’s in our store room, our offering of paid eldersitter services by some of our members, our discussion on retirement living, plus a few others.  But many of us have not responded to work together in this true kampong spirit.

Perhaps, we can help and think of new ideas.  We should support more activities and programs so that we can help ourselves as we age.  Afterall, many of us are reported as “Asset-poor and cash-rich”.

How and what can we group together and care for ourselves?  Please respect the views of others when making comments.  Not all of us are rich, and not all of us are poor.  Not all of us can travel, makan and enjoy ourselves frequently, many of us have still to work.

  1. Hi Terence,

We are definitely not cash rich and asset poor. I think its the other way around… most of us have houses (mostly HDB), and are still paying housing loan for them. So we are asset rich but cash poor

We can also be asset poor and cash poor as some of us are staying in our children’s home and are not working.

But then again, we can be asset rich and cash rich… Those lucky ones in this position have made it!!
