Sweeter Smell of Durians

It is about time that the King of Fruits is rehabilatated. Can this great local fruit  be nice to eat  and yet good for health.

Is it just a old wives tale that mangosteen is antidote for durians. Is it true that rinsing with durian shell will get rid of the smell.

What is the truth and what is myth. If the truth is known can we now eat, eat and eat.

Yipeeee…

  1. The good news first. Durian helps lower cholesterol !!!

This is according to a study by Ray Sahelian, M.D.,Warsaw Agricultural University.

“The contents of dietary fibers, minerals and trace metals at different stages of ripening were comparable. Total polyphenols and flavonoids in ripe durian were significantly higher than in mature and overripe. Antioxidant capacity in total polyphenol extracts of ripe durian were significantly higher than that of mature and overripe samples. Then 35 male Wistar rats were divided into 5 dietary groups each of 7 and named Control, Chol, Chol/Mature, Chol/Ripe and Chol/Overripe. During 30 days of the experiment the rats of all 5 groups were fed basal diet (BD), which included wheat starch, casein, soybean oil, vitamin and mineral mixtures. The rats of the Control group were fed a BD only. To the BD of the Chol group was added 1% of cholesterol. The BD of the Chol/Mature, Chol/Ripe and Chol/Overripe groups was supplemented with 1% of cholesterol and 5% of the mature, ripe and overripe durian as freeze-dried powder, respectively. Diets containing ripe and to a lesser degree mature and overripe durian significantly hindered the rise in plasma lipids and also hindered a decrease in plasma antioxidant activity. Ripe durian contains higher quantity of bioactive compounds, has higher antioxidant capacity and nutritional value. It positively affects the plasma lipid profile, the plasma glucose and the antioxidant activity in rats fed cholesterol enriched diets.

Therefore, the ripe durian supplemented diet could be beneficial for patient suffering from hypercholesterolemia and diabetes mellitus. “

  2. Mangosteen antidote for durians – fact or fiction?

Durian is traditionally considered a “heaty” fruit and mangosteens are eaten as an antidote to “cool” the body down after one has consumed too many durians. This “heaty and cooling” way of eating the delicious fruits is well known to durian connoisseurs in Malaysia and many believe it works.

It is common for people to fall sick or suffer from sore throat after consuming excessive durian. Interestingly, recent research on phytonutrients in mangosteen seems to indicate that the traditional claim may have some truth after all.

In recent years, the identification of xanthone in mangosteen has prompted the health researchers to take a second look at the fruit. Xanthone is able to support microbiological balance in the body and it also keeps the immune system in a healthy condition and promotes joint flexibility. Although xanthone is mainly located in the pericarp (skin) of mangosteen, eating the inner pulpy flesh is certainly a more pleasurable way to enjoy the health benefits conferred by the fruit to reduce the risk of getting sick or a sore throat.

Durian, an aromatic, nutritious fruit, is packed with proteins, minerals, antioxidants and other phytonutrients. On the other hand, mangosteen, a “cooling” fruit, has a delicately flavoured sweetness and mild acidic taste.

The organic fruit acids in mangosteen help in digestion and give one a comfortable satisfying feeling.

  3. Durian shell mouth wash? Here’s how.

A traditional practice is to drink salt water using the shell as a container. The shell is slightly alkaline and the result is an instant mouth wash that would enable you to get rid of the lingering odour in your mouth, which can be quite offensive.

  4. Hi WongKT at 4 ,

….have a durian ORGY and not feel guilty about it.

    In the past,durians come in seasons.(abt 2? )

Nowadays, almost everyday durians are sold at NTUC supermakts .

    How come ?
These durians are “pumped” with flowering hormones and chemicals to accelerate the durians to flower more and ripen faster, not a natural process.

i.e. why “organic” durians is so much more expensive than the induced ones.

And consuming too much of these “unnatural” durians will not be good for our health in the long run similar to GM food.

  5. KT – durian festival is beside Carefour on the way to kota tinggi but you must know how to bargain.
Steven – the way you indulge fresh is better but as a dessert not a meal, goreng durian is refreshing, good for foreigners too.
Beer is a natural cooling drink esp the USA brands with lower alcohol. Liguor is heaty so cant drink after eating durians.
So now, Steven you can enjoy, enjoy but keep a good exercise routine too.

  6. Dear All,

Just like to confirm personal experience on how to remove durian odour after consuming it.

Believe it or not, if you just slice the centre soft white part of the durian shell and use it like soap on your hands, it’s true that you’ll remove almost all trace of the durian smell on your hands. Try it!

As for drinking salt water from the durian shell to remove the odour, I guess it’s less effective. One thing’s for sure, is that you cannot deny having taken that fruit as the smell stays in you and expels the most disgusting pong if/when you do belch, but who cares right, just enjoy and eat the fruit if you love it – I certainly do, so count me in if there’s a durian tour coming up. Rgds, Lisa

  7. Steven @#5

    Absolutely right.

There is no simple solution. If you are worried about GM and non-organic processes, then the only way is to buy expensive organics. But then, how do you ensure that they are really organic.

This applies not only to durians but every fruit and vege sold without an organic label.

There is one way. This comes from the retirement village idea. Buy a co-operative mixed farm or book fruit trees.

For the former we can ask Gibson for his landbanking expertise to apply here. Let him earn a professional fee if he wants to and start acquiring farm rights at landbanking terms. (Landbankers use options and not outright purchases in most cases.) Make a product takeoff deal at the same time.

The ideal place would be Malaysia for ease of transport (post MS) and surrounding islands. In Singapore, hi-tech farms are available like Mrs. Ivy Sing-Lim ‘s Bollywood Veggies. In Kranji, nine farms and a pottery have banded together.

    http://www.wildsingapore.org/news/20050102/050121-1.htm

According to the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority, there are 114 farms there, fewer than half the 277 farms in Singapore. Singapore’s rental of agriculture land is expensive with short 20 years leases. But like in the Kranji case, there is a potential revenue stream from tourism and event organisation.
“….. has drawn up a tantalising farm tour for couples …. with a ‘steamy sex diet’ talk to raise the heat. ”

Tim, you’re in charge of the sex-diet event.

    ” …hey, you’re not Simba… don’t play with your food…”

  8. Alcohol and durians – a lethal mix of bad company?

There is little published science on this. Traditional explanation in terms of heatiness would imply that eating mangosteen could be a antidote. As discussed earlier in #2 there is some scientific basis for the mangosteen to durian relationship.

Anyone game to try? Perphaps, we should set out alive experiment on our durian fest trip to JB.

The other speculation is the belief has something to do with drunken indigestion. A causal speculation may run like this –
Eating durians make one feel good and to drink more. Excessive drinking and indigestion leads to a carbo peak. Resulting in choking while under the influnce of alcohol and accentuating existing illnesses like diabeties and heart problems.

From the narration, you can see that the alleviated risk of harm can come from a number of scenarios and may vary from case-to-case.

    What do I say?

Forget the mumbo-jumbo until science makes its case. If someone “pao chia” then the rest can “pao chiak” and binge. We have only one life. And there is no guarantee in after-life that we’ll get durians and booze from beyond.

  9. Lisa,

I like durians, but it’s precisely the persistent ‘pong’ that puts me off.
If and when I do eat durians, I use disposable gloves to handle the fruit as I can’t stand the residual smell on my fingers. Hehe.

I will try your method of removing the smell next time.

  10. Huh, KT, myth and more myth from you. Ok, let me give the facts then.

Farmers are working on crossing durian with mangosteen. In 7 years’ time you wont find any thorny durians but smooth dumangoriansteen, with the 2 types of fruits alternating in the compartments.

Easy and better to remove the smell before, not after you eat durians. This is how it’s done.

With 2 negatives, you produce a positive. So, with your negative body odour normally found at places where you keep hair that is least shown, hold the durians there for at least 60 minutes.

Then serve the fruits……trust me, aromatic not only to durian-lovers but also to the angmohs, pekmohs……..cos the fruit has gone thru the process of moh-rification…………

  11. Hi Mary Chan at 12,
Just finish eating my home cooked durian glutinous rice. Yummy!

Ok back to work…… ….when I do eat durians, I use DISPOSABLE gloves to handle the fruit as I can’t stand the residual smell on my fingers.

    Disposablegloves?
Looks like Mary is handling a LEPROSY durian.

    The smell is fantastic.

Like KFC, it is finger licking good. So lick the residual flesh of durians from yr fingers next time.

The more pungent the smell is (arises from the fermentn of fruit? ),the better the quality of the durians.

    Best variety is bitter sweet.

Huge size Thai durians looks great but lose out in its smell compare with smaller size Msian durians.

    Malaysia Boleh!

Apa pun boleh! that is why the BN lost its 2/3 majority.

Everywhere you see signages of Selamat datang when you pass thru every state ,looks like Mas Selamat is hiding in Msia?

  12. Walk the talk is better than talk the talk.

Clinically clean with nature is being clean at wrong places.

Beauty and excellent taste come from freshness, purity and original sweetness.

  13. Well guys,

Do you know how to choose good and tasty durians?

Shake it? knock its husk? Smell it? or See the textures?

Further challenge will be at finding the “Chiu Chee” and “Ang Ba”. Also try to find the “Kor Ba” or “XO taste” type of durian.

Who is expert at this? maybe we should have a competition to find out who is our SHCian – Durian King or Queen.

I had experienced trying to eat durian with Beer. Guess what happen? My stomach simply get bloated.

But dare you try drinking Stout with eating durian. What do you think will happen?

Much have said, so Tim, are you going for the Buffet on 29/3/08 (Sat.) at 11 am at Bali Lane? Anyone else joining in the Buffet perhaps we can proceed to eat durian at Geylang after the Buffet.

    Regards

  14. Hi Pat Yeo at 16,

After buffet can still go to Geylang to eat XO durians . OMG you had a huge apetitie.

For me to do the same, I will lou sai.

Perhaps we can separate buffet from durians and we set it on 2 different occassions.

But certainly not today , I do not want to suffer from indigestion and miss our anxiously annual D n D tonight and our lovely mermaids/mermans.
    Ha! ha!

  15. Hope you guys had a riot of a time at the D&D. I am totally spaced out at deal making. Can’t sleep. So let me share some durian dreams.

A durian connoiseur is like a good value investor. He uses his knowledge of the product/prices to make a good buy at the best value. This is the same with anything of value that is important to us eg stocks, properties, cars, wine etc. Forget the jargon and the mathematics. This is the essence of value trading or investment. Let see how we deploy value trading to buying durians.

    First the product knowledge.

To date, there are more than 100 durian clones available in the region. The few popular grades and their ‘features’ as follows. Prices indicated are per kg and may vary depending on demand and supply. But the price ranking between different types can be used as a benchmark. Test prices by using a standard reference type eg D24.

    – D4 Whitish yellow, fleshy, small seeds Bitter $8

    – D13 (and red prawns). Orangy color, small seeds, sweet (very mild bitterness.

    – D24. Creamy color, rather soft, bitter sweet taste. Usually 2 seeds max per side, one good D24 may contain only abt 4 seeds. Strong aroma. Darkish yellow, fleshy, small seeds Bitter-sweet $10 – $18 per kg

    – D101. Orangy color, small seeds, bitter with some sweetness.
Both D13 n D101 has similar color flesh. D101 has better durian aroma. Reddish, fleshy Very sweet $10

    – D666 (cat mountain). Yellow color, some spicy tangy taste. Thick flesh, strong aroma, reasonable seed size.

    – XO. Real XO durian has similar gas effect up e nose like as drinkin XO. Usually very bitter, very nice flesh, it’ll hit ur nerves. Bright yellow, fleshy, small seeds Bitter with a slight tinge of sweetness $18

    – Hongxia Reddish, less fleshy Sweet with slight bitter aftertaste $8

    – Golden Pillow Golden, fleshy, small seeds Sweet with slight tinge of bitterness $8

    – Ganja Bright yellow, fleshy Sweet $8

  16. Hi KT at @ 19

The Durian Connoissuer with six main varieties of durian.

Would you like to lead us to taste/enjoy 2 or 3 type/class of durians in each excursion or all six in one trip ?

One congenial occasion during May to July please?

    Cheers,

  17. A @ #20

As in the flea market, we would like a generation of EO’s to step forward.

This time it is different. They have the full legal and commercial resources to bear to make their projects successful. There is teeth to the organisational activities which otherwise will be KIV or be another still-born idea as a result of many small operational details.

As an organiser yourself, I think that you are fully aware of the issues. Although it is seldom highlighted or even appreciated, many organisers have gone out of their way to organize their projects. In Terence case, he underwritten costs personally to the tune of one or two hundred dollars for the flea market in my estimate. In your case, I suspect (although I have not been to your sessions I know what it is like being in a MC) you have to stick your neck out to make your condos common areas available to members for classes; and may have to underwrite some other entertainment costs.

Of course, it is one thing to say that your efforts are deeply appreciated as they should be. They may be others who may be willing to give for common good but who can ill-afford to. It will be unfair to demand. Anyway as an organisation capability and continuity, it is unsustainable.

Scorebot is there if members need to use it as a support prop. Until the time that SHC is itself a legal entity or has other legal alternatives, this “one-club, two system” approach is good enough for all practical purposes. It is one of the original reasons why Scorebot was put together.

A bit clumsy as an organisation structure. But it works fine now. The club through its proxy organisations can raise, collect and be responsible for funds for its projects properly like any organisation.

So volunteers for EO, please. To start, can Steven and/or yourself take the charge of the durian fest project. Your projects can be as small or as ambitious as you wish to be.

  18. Yo, Steven and Ron. Or others.

Anyone interested in heading the Durian fest as EO’s. You’ll get unprecedented assistance. It’ll be a walk in the durian park.

We are looking for depth in our organisational leadership and execution capability. I will just be as, if not more, busy, helpful and committed to the success of the project. You will not be alone.

But if noi one is porepared to talk the walk, we will just talk until there is. Keep it a bit “unorganised” if need be until something arises.

  19. Lina @ #24

I don’t mind except that there is more at stake strategically. My direct involvement will mean that the experiment has faltered.

The original question is whether SHC can grow organisationally with just its own resources. If leadership is thin on the ground for other than the highly successfully local social dances and parties, where do we go from here?

Why don’t you help out as EO here. It is very easy with full unprecedented support. You will help SHC to move forward over and above just the durian fest.

  20. Hi KT,

I cannot be EO for anything, lah. So, I beg you or anybody else for that matter not to even suggest it. For a start, if I going to be EO for anything, I won’t be able to sleep and for all the nights following. And my sleep is very important to me.

Just class monitor/treasurer for Andrew’s Chinese lessons is aye OK. Nothing more than that.

  21. Lina @ #26

Hmmm… Didn’t I meet you at the Origami meeting at Scorebot? You look every the part of the beauty and brains to me. A little JB jaunt shouldn’t make a dent into your beauty sleep.

Anyway, we still wait for SHC’s towering infernos -Ron and Steve to throw in their lot into the hat. Actually, one tower and one short chimney.

Don’t worry guys. Just volunteer. At the very least, I guarantee that “cheng-kay will not top up” under my watch.

But if we can’t, we can’t. It’ll the first time, I will be very sad to win a bet.

  22. Hi Wong KT,

Aaiyah! Why bother with all the durians jargon
    D1…D101, XO etc.. ?

When I buy durians , I sniff every packet closely for a strong aromatic odour , press gently on the flesh and made sure it is semi- dry ( wong yoke kuon pau ).

Pau chiak! and that’s it,a sale is done.

Why bother to talk abt investments and trading on durians ?

  23. My dear KT

Just be the EO for the durian walk so that everyone can savour your quality picking skills mentioned under #19 with almost 200 words.

Yes, and pick a place, date and time in May 2008.

Otherwise you have caused mercilessly everyone who reads this thread to have salivary overflow in vain.

We can arrange a Treasurer and Class Monitor for the excursion.

    Cheers,

  24. Romancing The Durian

Like a rolled-up hedgehog in defence,

The spiky, young, green durian hangs,

Like a little circular fortress, on a tree.

Below, a swain looks oft at it longingly.

    Comes the day, a strong unique scent radiates;

    The love-struck swain impatiently waits.

    Big and ripe, the durian he sees, fall;

Rushes he to the precious thorny ball.

    A grin – he has got his love;

    Bereft now the branch above.

  25. So sweet are thy flesh

    Fragrant is the airs

But where is the flesh to taste

    So much talk

    Still waiting for the prince

to pick the sweetest of them all

When will he show the fruits to savour?

Or, just another Nato, nato and nato!

Let the ants show the street where the Queen lives, we shall find our real XO and Ds.

  26. A @ #29

Sad isn’t it. Everybody’s waiting for each other to volunteer.

Come to think of it. Why don’t you EO the durian fest ? Be the prince and lead by example.

I can still be very involved in a supporting role. So the EO will not be alone.

  27. Hello KT

I am keen to have healthy Durian Trail or Feast.

Am thinking either end May or middle of June 2008.

    1) Durian Trail/Breakfast Fellowship : Famous Bukit Timah Hill Durian Trail, next to Rifle Range (early morning picking up fresh durian and eat them in the jungle)

    2) Durian Feast & Sumptuous Dinner Fellowship : Either Queen Street or Sims Avenue (taste at least three varieties before dinner)

Taking fresh fruit before meals is healthy and to ensure maximum absorption of useful minerals/proteins into our bodies.

Will be posting the events to gauge interests towards end of next month.

So SHCians out there, your input is important: go or no go.

    Cheers,

  28. A @ #33

    Good idea.

Suggest that you open a new post and ask people to join. We can see the interest.

Suggest a budget of $20 to $30 per head. We bulk “pao chiak” purchase for better value than if we go on site and bargain. Save buses. If cannot finish can take home.

Possible to alternatively arrange for a durian party at Scorebot (like the flea market) or your condo/club. We will arrange for seller on site.

We can have buffett and programs. And your duet.
Give you a chance to win the bet.

    Ha-ha.

  29. Hi KT / all SHCians

    1) Will you (KT) be the first to commit $20-30 per head with your wife, non refundable ?

    2) If have at least 30 interested SHCians, can consider having a Durian cum dinner feast end of May or middle of June by the poolside, not by the roadside along Bali Lane.

    3) Will start a new thread next month, 2nd D&D just over and Cycling at Pengarang next Saturday.

  30. Thanks, PatrickY, for calling me last Saturday to remind of the buffet.

Alas, when told that you’re coming, the food operators shuddered and grimaced, saying that for you, the drinks @ $1.50 can be buffet but not the food, too scared that you wd eat them up after cleaning up the buffet table. So we’ll hv to wait for a EO to fall from the sky & fete us with a durian fest.

Meanwhile, inspired, here comes my ode, copied-righted.

    “Flagging his ass

He says, here is the flesh to taste

So much talk but where is Mr Cock ?

    He’s waiting for the sting

The prick that gives him the sweetest & much more

When will he show up : be it a brute or the devil?

Or, he just stands there taking foto & more foto.”

  31. Hi Wong KTand Dennis Har ,

As your Durian tour has still not materialised ,perhaps both of you take a break at Score bods and can consider joining us for a makan session at Sunset way.

Pls read my post re: BBQ n steamboat buffet for details.

  32. Hi Steven

Patience is an excellent virtue. There are seasons for everything on this part of heavens.

The durian harvesting season is around late May to July.

Get both of them to join you in the charcoal steamboat fellowship lah!

  33. Hi Andrew Kuan at 40,

…Get both of them to join you in the charcoal steamboat fellowship lah!

Cannot force them to join leh!

( Ou um yam shui , tim gum tuck ou tau di ) Cantonese

translated if cow refuse to drink water, you cannot force the cow’s head down.

  34. Don’t need to, hoping for the best, Steven

Even you forced the cows to the water, if they are stubborn, it would merely waste all effort.

Also with obnoxious ones, no amount of sense or meaningful mention or a kind word will help.

After five attempts, best to ignore.

One pithy wise Chinese proverb : a single palm cannot made noise. Just leave them alone to talk profane things and hot airs. Sensitive people are able to discern.

  35. Hi Yew Kwong, Robert, Ronald Tong, Charles, Jonathan, Kenneth, Dan, Douglas,Dennis, Ronald Wie, Boon Liang, and Terence and many many more like-minded gentlemen.

And Lina, Ah Nee, Rene, Molly, Caroline, Pheng Sok, Nor, Jessie, Rosalind, Joy, Christina, Annie, Alicia, Joyce, Jie, Sophia, June(s), Margaret,Grace(s), Dolly, Suzanne and many many more charming ladies :

Are you keen to be part of this in organising the durian feast or trail too?

  36. A @ #45

I am committed to eat a lot. Lots and lots of durians especially if it is one price, eat all.
    hee-hee.

If you ask for comments, you may be running around in circles not getting anywhere. The answers minus the jokes and wisecracks may not be deterministic enough.

BTW, why don’t you post a venue, description, cost, date and time. Then it is an event that memebrs can subscribe to. Those who respond will respond. If you get enough names on your post, then ask for credit to account. If, later, not enough signup before dateline that you set (in order to finalize arrangements with vendors etc) and you decide to cancel project, then simply cancel and refund moneys.

Same modus operandi as per D&D and other SHC projects.

  37. KT

I am focus on key essentials.

I asked you twice to commit where your mouth is, ie financial commitments of $20-30 per head.

Details will come later, possibly end of April. Am thinking of Durian Feast/ Trail Fellowship in end May or middle June.

Simple and easy to manage for meaningful company and friendship.

    20-30 persons will suffice.

  38. Andrew,
Sorry, a durian feast is taboo for me. I love to partcipate but am restricted by medical reasons. It will only increase my triglycerite and ultimately my cholesterol!
So the “pot-luck” for this Saturday is off?

  39. A @ #48

Post your details as per proposed venue, description, cost, date and time.

Then everybody can confirm and book their own time. Subject to your actual date, I can confirm coming. If you have a crediting account then those that confirm will send their moneys in.

What other kind of financial commitment, if any, are you looking for? I am really puzzled?

  40. Sorry, Roland Tong.

Certainly, Roland Tong is a dear name for the tennis and education fraternity in Singapore.

    Saw your many medals.

KT, be patient for details, wait when time is ripe.

  41. Hope we don’t have to wait long, long.

Back to basics of valuing durians whilst we wait.

Choosing durian comes with few basic tricks.

    – Shake lightly, to feel if there’s a mild ‘thud’ feeling. It shows that the flesh is not stuck to the shell.

-Sniff the durian, but don’t sniff spots that are white (pesticide).

    – Hitting the shell and listen. If it’s hard, it’s not ripe. If it’s hollow, it’s ripe. Same as choosing watermelon.

    – Look at the shape ie irregular and non=symmetrical

    – look at the thorns ie random and not regular

Share your selection technique. If there are enough experts, we can have a selection challenge. Lots of fun. Winner gets to eat for free.

  42. Hi Andrew, tks 4 d invite n durian is my favorite oso but rite nw, dun dare 2 try yet till my skin problem is clear so i shall remained hopeful dat i m able 2 join in closer 2 d date lor.. aisai bo?

  43. Roland

    You said

“….Sorry, a durian feast is taboo for me. I love to partcipate but am restricted by medical reasons. It will only increase my triglycerite and ultimately my cholesterol! ”

On the contrary. New study at #1 shows that “Durian helps lower cholesterol !!! ”

Of course, don’t overeat. Overeating and overdosing anything is bad.

Share. You can try one biteful of every variety. You don’t have to take an entire packet.

Negotiate with Andrew if the cost for full buffett is too much. Perphps he can offer a diet platter for less.

Anyway, it is a social SHC event. Just join in the fun.

  44. Count me in please.
Pau Chiak, bitter sweet and wong yoke quan pau is the best XO durians.

    Durians are my favourite fruit.

If possible it will be more fun picking ripen durians that dropped down from the trees at Bkt. timah trail.

Don’t 4get to bring along a heavy duty helmet .Ha! ha!

  45. Let see the kind of response : a) Durian Trail at Bt Timah Hill or b) an excursion to Queen Street or Sims Avenue follow by dinner at famous hokkien noodles / chi char / frog leg porridge / exotic food along Sims Avenue or Geylang.

  46. Andrew @ #57

    Don’t forget

    c) Private durian fest party for SHC at exotic place like Andrew’s condo or Scorebot. Flexible programs and wider food selection with bufett. Limited by imagination.

  47. Hi Andrew (#46),

    Thanks for the invite :D

I will give a miss as I am unable to consume the fruit. Perhaps some other activities at other times.

    Cheers, Grace Kok

  48. Hi Roland @ #49

For you, would specially include mangosteens (queen of the fruits)which are excellent for the heart, blood, lung and liver, and sweet farm chicken(??).

    Your fellowship is much appreciated.

    Warmest regards

    Andrew

  49. Hi Steven at #58

Yes, real exotic foods along Sims Avenue and Geylang.

If you think of the “other” kind of nature/people : excellent, good , bad/haughty, ugly/pretentious, toxic and obnoxious.

Just do not associate with the last four categories, everyone will be fine and safe.

Stay close and within the excellent and good people, you will be in good company and at healthy levels.

  50. Hi AndrewK at # 62,

    ..…”exotic” food along Geylang.

It was meant as a joke.

After all , that place is well-known as an infamous place.SHCians are clean in mind and soul . Um Mo Tam Sum .

Wait till you see what’s in store for you at Amsterdam.

  51. Dear Steven

There are six categories in every part of this earth including our city state. Just look at any city since Genesis, the six classes are everywhere!

Stay and associate with excellent and good people, one will be contented, safe and sound.

Ignore and do not associate with any in the last four groups, one will be sound, wise, in good hands and company.

????,???? – contact with vermilion makes one red; influence of companionship.

  52. Likely to organise one Durian/Fruit tasting cum Geylang Tour on a Saturday evening around end of May, starting from 7pm onwards and ends around 10:30pm.

    Watch out for the posting on the itinenary around middle of May to savour a) durians, mangosteens and other fresh fruits;

    b) then “exotic” dinner/supper and “Tour” of shopping areas and “business districts”.

Cost of above (a) and (b) will be on cost sharing and/or going dutch basis.

Good to have fruits first prior to sumptuous dinner/supper. Let the nutrients of fruits be totally absorbed into our systems, then solid foods.

A small group of about a good dozen prefers, in two/three sub-groups.

  53. Hi Andrew,

I guess you are going to organise a Durian/Fruit tour in Geylang in May 2008. This is nice, and I would be keen to join, once you have a date and time in mind.

Had some durians two nights ago, and I think the D24 is rather watery. So, please start with a date and time. See u then.

    Terence Seah

  54. Sure, Terence.

Now you are an experienced tour leader, you can co-lead, yes?

I will do my best for the tour in end May.

Was brought up in Kallang Airport; had several teachers, students, friends (incl MPs, classmates and schoolmates who lived in Geylang. We used to watch various happenings and ate exotic foods and tasty fares.

My f-i-law with some partners opened Spore first air-cond restaurant at Gay World where the famed Sin Leong and others once worked.

First visited Geylang Methodist Church in 1970, not far where you folks congregated last evening. So, is ICPAS HQ, also nearby.

So literally, am an Eastern sector person.

  55. Likely date/ time :

    Saturday, 31 May from 7pm to 10:30pm.

Meeting place : Aljunied MRT station, nearer to the durian/fruits row along Sims Avenue.

KT Wong, the durian picking expert must join in too. Otherwise would not consider him in any future project!

Those interested can start to consider and join in.

  56. AndrewK @# 69

Alamak, Andrew, you should have organised it last week when Ron-oz was here! He left S’pore without tasting durian! How can?

There’s a durian eating culture in Geylang – wash basin, proper table and chairs, friendly durian sellers…no squatting beside a drain to eat!.

Hmm.. will let you know if I’m free to join closer to the date.

    JassmineT

  57. Hi AndrewK,

Great, and I have this date in my diary. However, I prefer not to be assistant EO. You sure there are good durians in May?

    Terence Seah

  58. Dear Jassmine/all

The best time for tasting and eating of quality durians is during the natural harvesting season from May to July or end of the year.

Two persons have spoken with me on the phone their interests; including Terence, at this soft launch, we have 7 places left.

At our prime age, let us go for quality durians and Business District Tour in the midst of friends!

  59. Andrew @ #69

    So much theory…..

Of course-lah. I wouldn’t stay away from a durian challenge. A game of skill.

I choose, you choose. The rest judge on a blind basis. (With my popularity, it will not be fair if they choose the winner based on charisma and looks of the chooser instead on the merits of the choice.)

The loser pays the winners share.

BTW. The contest is open to all.

    Hee-hee

  60. Terence & Andrew,

    Aiyah…. goosepimples.

Please-lah you two. Don’t keep passing the durian like this. Sounds like two durian sellers in Brokeback Mountain. So embarassing.

Forget about bilion $ projects. EO for durian trip only-mah. So easy.

Even Tim can do. Just do it.

  61. Hi KT

Let all enjoy the fruit/results of your picking durian skills.

No theory nor challenge, simply are you coming and demonstate your expertise for the benefits of all going on Saturday, 31 May 7 to 10:30pm, meeting place : Aljunied MRT station ground level facing Sims Avenue?

All will go on cost sharing/Dutch basis, including you. No competition but appreciation of your skills.

Let your yes be a yes, a no be a no. No further digression please.

  62. KT

The basic key details are above at #69 and 75.

I have submitted a posting since yesterday’s evening, awaiting Terence/Administrator to launch it.

Before around 1 April, it was easy and non restrictive: just write and click,it is posted.

Just a definite yes or no, no further excuse or digression needed.

Will consider a clear no from you if it is further talk only.

  63. Andrew @# 78

You won’t even risk to take a written cheque. Dun expect others to believe in your blank cheque.

Incredible. Terence held back an event posting from a volunteer EO!!!

    I dun believe it.

What did you put in there. A platform manifesto or a novel about War & Peace?

I’ll be one of the first to sign up when its out.

BTW. Here’s a good idea for a people beneficial program. Since you are so good into fundamentals, why don’t you put together a think-tank and publish our own inflation numbers. Just check popular supermarkets for the basket will do. This will tell us what our real inflation rates are. And what are we to do anything, if any.

Society will be thankful. It may be the bell for the wake-up call that averts the tsunami.

  64. Just a simple posting of event name/purpose, place and time with references to this thread.

Invite 12 keen people, mentioned already five places taken, including Terence.

  65. KT at #79 last two paras

Our Dept of Stats are efficient and have all the materials, don’t need to duplicate efforts, just click/tap into their resources.

  66. The gratefulness from general lot, yes.

Often, it is normal, one will get “g eyes”, and would get unnecessary crude unpleasantness.

Still if benefit the majority, just be courageous and share.

Just ignore the haughty minority – that is life.

  67. KT, terrible lah, my mouse ran away with a donkey owned by the preacher and so for a day I hv been out of a computer, now in Geylang internet cafe sharing one with a TTL.

When i read #73, “With my popularity…” I thot it was either the preacher or his donkey assing heeee, sometime you and I too hv to talk like that……..

Btw, kena hit by the Jade Tech sell-down like Omni Pnrs?

  68. Dear all who are interested in the Durian and Serendipity Trail.

Please join in the second trail on Saturday, 5 July 2008.
