Homestays in Singapore

Hi Terence and All SHC members

It was an interesting article on Asiaone on Homestays in Singapore targetting mature travellers that I read recently. This is something I personally feel that I would like to consider when I make a trip back to Singapore. Does anyone have an idea how to contact those enterprising people mentioned in the article?

  1. hi joan

do u mean u wan to stay at homestay or run one?

btw, any development on the *campervan* idea i suggested at the annalakshimi lunch? still waiting 4 ur email………

  2. Hi Esther

Yes I may want to do homestay in Singapore should I be back in S’pore. This is if I stay for more than a week. If I can rather than be in a hotel, I would like to be in a place where I know it’s comfortable, have no worries about security especially as I tend to travel alone.

Cat Ho did a homestay with Mary here in Perth and from her comments, the idea went very well. I’m thinking of similar lines except that I know S’pore and can move on my own.

Members who have room/s that they don’t use can treat this as a business venture too for short term stays for overseas visitors.

Regarding the campervanning, are you making plans for this year? You need to plan now. Actually, there are good discounts for Sep and I’m tempted to choose this year. However I have plans to go fishing in Aug and later to Kalbarri in Oct.

So I am thinking of a date like Mar/Apr 2009 as it’s end summer/early spring and so will be ideal for driving. So far, there’s my hubby and his cousin. Do you think you can join in next year? I know you mentioned that you are going somewhere next year.

  3. Hi Joan & those interested in homestay,

Tho I must say that homestay is reasonable & secure at Mary’s place, one must be able to be adaptable & obliging to move along wif the family. “In Rome U must do as the Romans do.”

First, we mustn’t be fussy on food & also “Courtesy begets courtesy.”

Second, if both parties are sincere and kind then arrangment could be made feasible.

Mary and I made quite a nos of exchange of e-mails b4 I decide to go ahead.

  4. Hi Catherine

I will remember your tips when I decide to do homestay in S’pore. I will try out homestay should I holiday in S’pore for longer than a week. The last time I was there I was at my own home which was without a tenant.

I think you adjusted very well when you were here. Hope to see you again, either in S’pore or Perth.

  6. The market rates for Boutique hotels start from S$80 ++ per room per night. Unless you are backpacker type you will probably be budgetted at S$120++ prpn.

Mid-range condo stay for 3/4 rooms start from a month and run from $2.5 K to $4.5K per month depending location. HDB is typically S$700 to $1K prpn.

It doesn’t matter. Even if you are homestay you will be bartering values at this level. Any better value would come from a friend / favour.

Have you thought through what you want and how you are going to secure it.

  7. Dear Joan,

Recently, I came across a place called “Hang Out”. It’s some kind of a budget hotel like YMCA. It’s very clean & but no TV or other frills added. (Use ur own HP or public coin or card phone @ lobby.

Knowing that U like reading, all U need is a place to bathe & sleep. It has services for a family 4-5 or couple. For those who’re single, they have the dormitory.

It’s in central of town near Paradise Centre. To know more details,pl e-mail me, lest I’ll be making an advert for them.

  8. Hi KT

Thanks for the useful info. At the time of my post, I was actually wondering if some members had thought of doing homestays in S’pore. I thought it’s a good way of doing a homebased business and meeting people. I haven’t seriosly considered doing homestays myself. Perhaps it’s more myself as a possible customer.

    Joan
