What are your dreams and wishes for 2009?

The year 2008 has just past, and most of us have made our 2009 resolutions, dreams and wishes.

You may be surprised, but we can help one another fulfil or achieve our dreams and wishes. And one way is to openly share our resolutions and dreams with other SilverHairs.

Whether you are a new or old SHCians, don’t be shy.

  1. My two wishes for SHC this year(2009) are:
    (a) A Tennis Fraternity among SHC
    (b) A Tuition Centre run by SHC members (A lot of discussion in 2008 but no end result!)

  2. First of all, my wish is for a more peaceful, healthier and happier world, no conflicts, no destruction of the environment, and no human and animal suffering, recession will soon pass.

I wish that all children around the world would have a life filled with love and fullfillment of their dreams.

I wish that all people in the world to learn how to love without war.

    My wish for SHC is:
All SHC members’ dreams come true

Last but not least and this is my wish, able to find time to join some of the activities planned by SHC EOs especially the founder Mr Terence Seah.

  3. Hi Terence and all,

Remember the ‘Starhub challenge’ to win the $50k to rent a place to house all our SHC activities ? I still have this dream and so do many others if you look back at the posting under ‘Starhub challenge’ you can find the dreams of many others too.

On reflection though we may not have succeeded totally in having a clubhouse, SHC has not failed also but have also evolved the idea into something much more pratical.

If you now consider many of us are able to almost find a place to MJ almost everyday at the numerous homes of nice SHC people who are willing to host. The homes for MJ, are better than NTUC or other Country clubs with only 1 MJ room which is rather informal, and have fixed timings, rules etc.

Many of the homes like Janes, Anne, Janets and others provide much better comfort, friendly and a cosier atmosphere, not to mention sometimes, good home cooked food too.

For one, I would like to thank Jane for initiating the Xmas pot luck and MJ on the 27th Dec. It was a well organsied event that was well supported with a buffet spread comparable to any other hotel menu, homemade rojak with sotong, fruits, special dried mee siam by Constance, dessert by Ann, and many other treats from other members.

It was creative and well planned of Jane to ensure all those who wanted to attend are not turn away, but welcomed in two shifts with plenty of food and games for all.

Patrick my vote for EO of MJ 2008, Jane, MJ host of 2008 (doing it mostly single handedly by themselves. Not forgetting too, Janet, Anne, JOe and all, thanks for running a MJ enterprise SHC style. A dream realised in mid 2008 and fullfilled.

I also share Rolond Tong’s dream of having a Tennis, badminton, golf set-up that can work just as well st the MJ fraternity. I hope that this will happen in 2009, with more SHC members willing to help in one way or another by volunteering to book tennis or badminton courts in their condos, etc.

Hoping also that a band jam group can gather more enthusiasts and kick off on a stronger beat.

Goodbye to a successful 2008 and looking to a better, exciting 2009 for Terence (who started it all) and all and may all his exciting, sometimes crazy ideas materialise this year.

Let us all be happy, keep on being healthy, continue making more friends and sharing our joys and loves with others.

On this same note for Jan, I will happy to make two weekly shopping trips to JB on Mons and Weds to cater for CNY shopping, etc. Mon 5th is still free while Wed 7th is already booked.

    Cheers

  4. Dear Ronald Wie

Good to see your log-in & Happy New Year. You seem to have time for shopping twice a week for CNY huh but I have not seen yr name attending Star In Concert 11th Jan, how come? Tot you said want to support me ha..ha

  5. Hi Terence and all

My 2008 was made more interesting by joining the SHC activities ! I am impressed by the level of enthusiasm and energy of SHC members, be it walks, dances, trips, charity, talks, makan, MJ or badminton and the colourful people I have met. You guys do every activity with such zest and it is so great to see everyone enjoying themselves whatever they are doing.

Kudos to all EOs who have taken the time and effort to make every event enjoyable and successful sacrificing their personal time and to all the gracious hostesses who have opened up their homes to ‘strangers’ and ‘mess’ their homes:-)

And of course, last but definitely not least, the humour on the website provides me with comic relief when I am stressed or terribly bored in the office. !!

Thanks, Terence, for providing this platform for everyone above 45 to meet and enjoy themselves!

Looking forward to a great SHC 2009 !!

  6. Hi Ron Wie

Sorry missed out something. My 1st dream for 2009 is to see you attending Stars In Concert & support Terence dream event hee…hee. Right Terence?

    Cheers!
    Hamidah

  7. Terence & All,

My 2009 blessings for all SHCians are:-
    Peace in our Hearts,
    Health in our Bodies,
    Wealth in our Lives &
    Happiness in our Homes.

    Jonathan

  8. Would like to use the opportunity to ask about the pic.

“WHY use a few dried dead fish to represent SHC?”

    Rather unceremonious isn’t it?

  9. Hi Hamidah,

Sorry lah if I cant be there but there are more than 100 others so dont disappoint them which I am sure you will not.

You have a range of talent from dancing, singing and acting too so there will be many more opportunities like the next DnD etc for me to catch your performances. The SIC is already happening soon so it no longer a dream for Terence and all.

I have a qualifing round of golf on the same day, to make it to the club team so that I can play the local clubs for free. If not I will have to play overseas professionally ,i.e. a paying professional, paying green fees, buggy fees wasting money, wonder how to support this hobby for long. My travel plans for this year is also dependent on making or not making this selection. This is one of my dreams too.

So cheers to everyone with dreams, and all the best wishes to everyone taking part in the SIC.

Ah hahahaha!! Is that the result of all that smoking?? So smokers beware or you might become one of those dried/smoked fish up there!

In a way I feel a little sorry for all the smokers, who are being slowly ‘squeezed out’, but I’m sure they know that smoking isn’t good for them, AND their loved ones.

Then again, why should I feel sorry for them? Why should one be forced to breath in the foul air that they exhale?

Please note, I’m not targetting anyone in particular. I just can’t stand cigarette smoke.

  12. Dear RonW

If u are referring to me, and not the other Janets, thank you for yr kind compliments.U are a wonderful person and we enjoy yr company at the mj table.Always obliging and a very easy-going guy. That’s why u are always invited to so many members’ homes. This game of mj really bonds so many people together!

    Have a good day, JanetH.

  13. Each New Year, I celebrate this this occasion with the families of my in-laws. And this year, it was held last night in Issan, among the wooden houses in a just harvested rice plantation.

In the evening, my wife held a lucky-draw, where each family member, incl kids, bring a gift worth $4 for exchange. The kids love the gift exchange. For drinks, we had local whisky for $10 a bottle and a create of local LEO beer at $4 for 3 large bottles. The kids and ladies had local alcoholic fruit punch. As the wind blows fairly strongly across the fields, we build a campfire to warm our hands. Temp was about 20C.

Around midnight, my brother-in-law walk into the dried fields with a wooden stick and a battery operated lamp on his forehead. He was catching rice fields rats for BBQ.

Throughout the night, a few kites were flying overhead. Attached to the kites was a nylon bade, which mades a rhythmn as the wind flows by. The sound helps us to sleep.

A simple NY celebration. My NY wish for SHCians if you love wild country living.

    Terence Seah

  14. Dear Terence,

Wow! Your New Year celebration sounds fantastic and interesting, I have never experienced that before, most probably will join you next year for the celebration.:P

Wild country living suits me, I love that, I use to work in fruit plantations like picking durians, rambutans, mangosteens and harvesting pineapples, working in farms looking after farm animals when I was very young, taking care and reproduce all species of orchid plants in Batang Melaka, these are history but the fact that I love nature is still in me,as I love peaceful & soothing environment for reflection and meditation, I love the sound of nature.
Have you ever thought of buying a small piece of land harvesting your own organic vegetables and reproducing your own livestocks in a little farm of yours when you retire?

Cheers to you & God Bless!

  15. Dear Terence & All SHCians,

  16. Hi Roland,

Your tuition centre idea did attract a number of interests amongst some SilverHairs when the idea first came up. After a couple of meetings and visits, the ideas appeared very varied. I would suggest you write in a new Post how you see your idea of a tuition centre being set up, and then this may get others who are interested to come into it.

Of course, others who are interested in setting up a tuition centre are also encouraged to write their ideas in a new tuition centre. If nobody gets this started, it probably means a lack of interests or is too shy to do so.

  17. Hi Nancy #17,

It’s nice to know you enjoy wild country life. I personally love it too. My wife and many of my Thai friends have lived and love the rustic, if not poor life that is common in many parts of North-eastern Thailand.

As for land, I don’t really need to buy any, as my wife and family own many rais of agricultural land in North-eastern Thailand, some 3 hours NE from Bangkok. Most farming here is done without chemicals. I am likely to encourage a group, more for those who want to spend short-term retirement in Thailand. Thanks for sharing your dreams and wishes in 2009.

  18. Hi Daniel #9,

When the picture of the dried fishes was picked for the banner, it was meant to inspire another outdoor activity “kelong fishing”.

There is some resemblance as one of the fishes does look like Tim Liu. In fact, as we acquire more SilverHairs, we can look more dried and thinner. But I must say there are many healthy, fleshier and fashionable ones among our membership.

And, the moment I get to Singapore, I shall look for a banner picture replacement.

  19. Hello Ron Wie

Tks for yr compliments…too bad your golf event falls on same day. Wish you all the best in your game & hope to see you probably in April during 2009 SHC D&D. Stay in touch.

    Cheers!

  20. Yes Sengh, that skinny scrawny fish me was a 2008 foto when I was down to 63 kg……now I am back to 72.5kg so care to display the whale-shark me up there?

    Resolutions…………huh, what resolutions??

400 at Gaza almost saw the fulfilmment of their resolutions but where are they now? 61 had just embarked on their 2009 resolutions but within 30 minutes, they were charred incognito.

For the battle-battered me I have long given up making resolutions bcos living in this dangerous world you just cant predict what will happen next.

Some resolved to make $ and so bought up the property market but soon many will be made to sit on a pile of bricks breaking their hearts and pricking holes in their pockets if home prices tumble.

To me, best if one can see an opportunity earlier than the rest and seizes the day. And when one is in a position to give, do. And remember, there is never a time one has made “enough” so…………….just do it says Nike.

Finally, do promises yourself that when seated in the train pls dont cross your legs and stick out yr foot, or slow down your car to kaypoh & gawk at an accident……….you dont need to make resolutions for these.

  21. Hi All SHCians:
My New Year Resoluton just one:
    Stay healthy cos H E A L T H is W E A L T H,
    Money cannot buy you H E A L T H!

    Hi Daniel #24:
Fyi that cartoon strip is really f u n n y…..ha ha he he

  22. Hi Terence,

Glad to hear that your wife & family own agricultural land in Thailand & the farming is done without chemicals, am sure you are enjoying wild country life when you are not travelling.

Yes, you should encourage a short-term retirement in Thailand sometimes, as healthier living is another facet that the countryside can boast of, besides one can breathe the fresh air that leads to healthier lungs, living in the countryside would give you more access to organic farmer’s food items that are produced, processed and packaged without using chemicals which have more health benefits than conventional food.

Besides that, the delightful singing of the birds nearby, the soothing sound of rustling leaves and being away from the noise and hassle of city life is wonderful & fantastic, I use to have all those when I was very young.

Those who love & enjoy country life are intelligence who are able to recognize, categorize, discriminate, sort, classify and caring about plants, animals and other objects in nature,in a classical sense, attending to flora and fauna in his/her environment, they could be naturalists/observer, according to Howard Gardner’s theory.

    That’s for today.

Cheers and enjoy your wild country life Terence!
