Valentine ideas?

SHC is large enough to allow ideas to surface and to make ideas come true.  2010 is unusual in that both Valentine day and Chinese New Year eve fall on the same day.  We never had a Valentine day.  But, this doesn’t mean an event on this day won’t work.  We just need to put the thinking process inplace.  After all, why not?  Maybe a Valentine lunch?  Heh, this is a Sunday.

Will you join a Valentine event, with red misleto fruits hanging above, hearts, and roses?  Ideal for couples, those in love or just wanting to share sometime out with a friend.

I think we can think of an event, maybe 10 – 15 couples.  I hope we can make it happen, and anyone likes to help me to make this event come true.  We have organisers and we have participants.  How’s that?  We close the dreaming process on 18 Jan 2010.  Then we make the event come true.

Now, seating and dreaming on a porch, facing a huge lake in Thailand Uttaradit province, with mirrored images of trees on the still waters and tall trees on both sides.

  1. Hi Terence
Your serene surroundings made you wanting to match making eh? I’d volunteer to be the EO if it can be held 2 days later i.e. 16 feb. possible? (i’ve many games for the singles to warm up or married couples to cozy up)

  2. Hi Geraldine,

I actually think that Valentine Day falls on CNY eve. Great, now I know from you that Valentine Day and CNY 1st day are the same day.

    Hi Frisna #2,
Date is still not set. So, you would like to be the games organiser, not the EO. You may like to know that an EO starts from place to registration to activities. Are you ready for that?

  4. Hi Frisna,

I am sure you will be able to put up a Valentine event. In this case, can I ask you to organise the Valentine day event. Choice of dates is yours. Give it a go. I shall ask you to be the EO then.

  5. Hi Frisna and SHCians planning a Valentine date,

Valentine Day is coming soon. A few days ago, I made an inquiry on the price of roses during this romantic week. The shop owner tells me that roses are going for something like 12 stalks for $80 and two dozens for $150. I forgot to ask if the roses are individually wrapped.

Frisna, plse pick a date, and try to organise an event for fellow SHCians. I wont be able to join this round, as I would be away for a few weeks from Feb 19.

  6. Dear Terence

I’ve to attend Palace garden party on my original proposed date i.e 27/2/10, that leaves me with Sat 20/2 to hold the gathering but i might need to travel right after CNY, so i’d better not start the ball rolling (esp without you around to back me up). my sincere apology. perhaps other member can make this “lovely” event happen?

  7. Hi SHCians,

I have a request for a couple to be interviewed on a Valentine story. Please read the text below, and if you are interested to be interviewed, please contact me.

The writer is from The Straits Times Life! section. She is looking to work with SHC for a story for an upcoming Valentines Day special. Basically it’s a story looking at marriage at different stages of life and she has been tasked to interview couples who have been married five, 20 and 40 years (or thereabouts).

Writer is aware SilverHairsClub is a club for active over-45s and she is hoping to find a couple who could fit into the latter two categories? She is aware SilverHairs will have interesting things to say as they are like an active and open-minded group of people. She is also hoping that the couple can pose in their cabaret costumes.

The story aims to look at real accounts of how a couple needs to work together to make a marriage last for this long.

Please contact me if you are interested to be interviewed.

  8. Hi Frisna,

Looks like the thread on a Valentine event didn’t catch on. So sad. I was hoping we can organise a huge Valentine dinner. I guess Chinese New Year is far more important. Sometimes, I wonder how the kids split themselves to attend the family reunion dinner and joining their peers or their Valentine dates.

A week ago, I read the latest copy of DUET. It’s for singles, and published by, I think, SDS/SDU. I love reading how to bring singles in Singapore together. And if you share the same love, and easily get excited, do write to me. My latest interest is to bring the many singles working along Shenton Way and Robinson Road together. I really hope single Singaporeans don’t just work. They should have have a life that they can enjoy. I hope Valentine Day gives them this opportunity.

And to SHCians who are courting, it’s always an experience. Have a good memory.

So Frisna, no organised Valentine event this year. Let’s try next year.

  9. Dear Terence #11

    Just my 1 cents worth…

Reunion dinner – Some “compartmentalised it, few hours here and few hours there!!

Single Singaporeans don’t just work? I think majority finds it hard to juggle especially if one party is “too needy” and truly “job security/stability” attracts. I am quite ‘sensitive’ to the Singles/Divorcees when they cross my path….Happiness is reachable if they can spare time, effort, and have the WISDOM what to do to make themselves HAPPY

‘Happy valentines to all the couples! And Single awareness day for all the singles’

    cheers

  10. C’mon, be real…….who can be so cork-sure (yes, no typo there) that the SHC Reunion Dinner is not also a Valentine Day dinner, please raise yr hand.

See, some Valentines like to do it in the open and be seen; some prefer not the shriek or shrill of love but shroud it in secrecy to add a bit of excitement & suspense, and feed the rumour mill.

Seriously, do we need to contribute to the tinkle of cash registers by spending more than fair value for purchases and squeeze ourselves, at our age with fragile bodies and brittle bones, to compete with young no-tomorrows at a Valentine Day celebration, in restaurants or whatever?

If there’s love, every day is VD. Conversely, without love, even if you crawl round the candle-light table with 99 stalks of roses planted in yr hair and belt at a VD dinner, it draws only laugh and maybe a loud blurp from him/her.

Btw, Terence, do buzz me b4 you round up all the Raffles Place/Shenton Way singles. Like at all soft launches, one gets the best, juciest and meatiest pick there…………not least, the preview of who these lonesome singles are, should thrill, hehe………..

  11. As a gift, the color of the roses can convey different meanings for the person who is receiving …..

Red roses are the most commonly chosen color. Red signifies love and passion. True red is the rose for lovers. Fiery red roses signify passion, while cardinal red symbolizes desire.

White roses represent humility, purity and innocence, the white rose – often referred to as the bridal rose – is associated with young love.

Yellow roses once meant jealousy, but today the yellow rose signifies friendship, familiar love, and domestic happiness.

Pink roses signify elegance, gentility, and poetic romance, without the seriousness signified by red. A deep pink conveys gratitude and appreciation, while pale shades connote grace and gentleness, admiration and happiness.

Purple roses represent majestic glory and can symbolize eternal love, while lavender or lilac roses signify love at first sight or the beginning of true feelings.

This is what I observed while helping out in my sis’s florist shop.

•Most popular & in demand are the red roses (husbands bought for their wives)

•Next are the blue roses (white roses soak overnight in blue dye), well like by youngster….and they called it puppy love…….

•Many young executive would prefer to give white or light cream roses to their new girlfriend or just beginning to date their dream gals.

•You can give a bouquet of pink roses to your mother, mother-in-law…they will be the happiest people on valentine day!

•Never give your girlfriend a bouquet of yellow roses, it means love will never last. This must be true because most florist shop don’t keep stock for yellow roses during valentine day.

For me….I will made a bouquet for myself to bring home to give to hubby to give it to me…hahaha….very funny.

May I wish all in advance “A very Happy Valentine day” :)

    Ah Nee

  12. Ah Nee,

You just prompted me to get some roses from Chenai, as I will be arriving Bkk this weekend. This will be for my wife and son.

I think all of us should make that little effort to get a stalk of rose for one’s love ones. It makes a world of difference, altho it may be the most expensive flower of the year.

    Tim,

This Sunday, do go out and get some roses. Ah Nee has given plenty of recommendations. Give these roses to someome whom you like to be a friend. You never know. Love is impulsive. You might find true love again.

And for all others, I wish you a meaningful Valentine Day too. Or you can send your Valentine wishes here too. Don’t be shy.

    Terence Seah

  13. Hi Ah Nee @ 14,

It is good that you share with us the different colours of the roses and their significance. You have almost all the colours Red,Blue,Purple ,Pink,White and Yellow listed down.

How abt creating and marketing “black” roses ?

Just meddle with the genes, this will one day prove possible and you will be laughing all the way to the bank. :)

  14. “Tim, this Sunday, do go out and get some roses……..Give these roses to someone…you like…..You never know. Love is impulsive. You might find true love again.”

Terence, usually you’re a goodman but targeting it at me and me alone makes you a batman hours before Vday. Batman attracts only catwoman but if you look at her closely she’s really Cat Yeo strapped, squeezed and bundled in a catwoman suit. Not Julie Andrews or Lei Hiong Kum.

With so many I like, it cannot be a case of “someone” so with this plenty many, no choice, I’ll have to give them cheaper flowers like mimosa or touch-me-knots.

You’re also right to say that love is impulsive so if I were to fall oin love with a man, blame not my inclination but my impulse.

Frankly, I think I am already in love……………………………with you, attracted by yr smile, yr teeth all seem to run out in a hurry to kiss me. That must be yr way of telling me how true love manifests itself.

Btw, 2 nites ago, I was having a good ecstatic time on my bed doing the “S” thing. It was so good and I wished it cd go on forever. Then everything came to an abrupt end when “beep beep” came a sms witching me “Happy CNY”.

Despite his good intent, wasn’t it kind of cruel of him to get me away from the mood which needed a long time to build up, at my age?

Go kick his butt for me………..altho I dunno how you can ever do it as it’s physically impossible, hehehe.

Since I hv declined by bro’s invite to his house, Sunday will be a quiet day for me, however, roaring back to life again on Monday when at least 2 private casinos have asked me to join them. I have emailed you an airticket so do use it to fly home ina cessna and join us in the fun.

  15. Terence, nobody will buy a stalk of rose for valentine day. Usually it’s a bouquet of a dozen of roses. Only students will get a stalk of rose for their teacher on Teachers’ Day.

Steven, black roses are symbolic of death…..avoid sending black roses, it’s bad omen as it does not exist in nature. How about Tulips, White Lily & Gerbera. They are very beautiful, especially the Tulips which will cost a “bomb” during valentine day.

Hey! Not necessary guys send flowers to gals…I have seen my male colleagues receiving flowers from their wives on valentine day too. ;)

    Ah Nee

  16. Hi Tim Liu @ 17,

    Sek Pau Moe See Choe.
Beware the cat woman will “scrawl” you beyond recognition and no amount of extreme makeover can give you back your once “normal” face. Ha! Ha! :)

  17. Recently, Straits Times carried an article of two of SilverHairsClub members. They are Robert Quek and Kristy Ng, a loving couple. I encourage you to read this article. The link to this artaicle can be found here at http://www.divaasia.com/article/7528.

To those who highlighted the article to my attention, thank you.

  18. Valentine 2010 came and went like any dull and listless day. So I cant help but be reminded of what one of my ex exes said, you dunno how to appreciate a woman, go love a man. And I am warming up to that suggestion.

Come Valentine Day 2011 and I hope I could retire by then and celebrate Valentine with my new found love.

Ivan-L, Dennis the Har ha, Yew Kwong…………..are you all in this forum and reading?
