Introducing Corporate membership to SHC

Currently, we only have individual membership in SHC.  The objective of SHC is to provide a platform for SilverHairs to meet new and more friends.  To some members, this objective has been met, and consequently smaller groups are formed, and they continue with their own objectives and interests.

Some members have organised activities for themselves as well as for other members.  They play the role of Event Organisers EOs and Event Coordinators ECs.  The costs are usually shared.  The organiser makes all the decision.

SHC is a moderated club; and its rules does not permit discussion on politics, sex, race and religion.  It also does not engage in direct selling and MLM.

However, I do notice an interesting pattern.  Many members like to see events being organised; but few would raise their hands to organise one.  When the EOs organise an event, there is a general request for more items to be added; but very few realise that the work in the background has to be done by somebody or a group of people.  Besides the current activities, there are other activities that we can focus on.  Many EOs put in their own time, money and effort, and yet many would quibble in the background that someone is making money out of the activity.  In a number of travel activities, some members even question the need to pick up the share of the organisers.

For some time, I reasoned this behaviour as attributed to the lack of time as one needs to still work and support their well being. I also think that we feel we should behave well above the general population, that we should not be cheated, and that if we have the money, we can do what we like to do.

When SHC started, it was conceptualised as a club whereby membership is free.  This works well, because we do not have costs and manpower to burden us.  We also do not have a clubhouse or society to add to our month’s burden.  This concept has worked very well for the last 5-6 years.  And, we will continue so.

However, we hit into snags when EOs want to organise an activity; but find that that the inertia to get the minium count can be a non-starter.  Add in some negative feedback, and the EOs can really feel dis-heartened.  We have many supporters in SHC, and they are the ones who help encouraged the EOs to continue with their plans.

I have always objected to corporate membership within SHC, although I dont think I know why.  I am beginning to think that maybe corporate membership can be one way of increasing the number of activities in SHC.  Here’s what I think of Corporate memberhship.

  1. Corporate membership would be a new category with SilverHairsClub.  Membership is usually termed for one year.  Corporate membership would not be free.  By Corporate membership, I refer to a company.
  2. Corporate members that support our activities would have to fund the activities that they have in mind, as long as it supports the concept of SilverHairs age group, retirees and seniors.
  3. Indidvidual members are not allowed to advertise, although Corporate members would allowed to advertise but will not have access to the club’s membership database.
  4. Besides activities, it is very likely that we will be able to increase our club’s membership significantly, with the support of Corporate members.
  5. SilverHairsClub.com will continue to run as it is running now, with a Club manager.

Now, I dont have all the ideas to get corporate membership moving.  However, if you wish to participate in this idea on Corporate membership, please feel free to let me know.  As members have not offered to take over SHC, I have decided to put SilveHairsClub under an entity sometime this year.  It is very likely I will appoint someone to run this entity.

  2. LOL!!
Here is the translation of the above post using Google Translator:

    While they,
    That the tube tomorrow, right?
Think a clear conscience to seek advance,
Is a blessing of natural precious,
    A curse without deep regret.

In the SHC, not as long or short four years, I once again through life’s “joys and sorrows.”

At first, I was “smash feces” and many people recognized the “strange capsule class”, playful, specifically looking for people Laishua, one is not happy to find someone to scold, “dead” in my hands is also not one hundred ten. Gradually, I feel it is a waste of twilight days of youth, very boring.

There together, but also separate. When sweet love, breaking up the left touch Melancholy memories.

Observe the principle, not to please people, but hate other people’s flattery, unless from the genuine. Is really also be the test of time to tell the difference. This will not change.

No matter how the future, thank you, SHC.

  3. Haha…well done Ivan, to join in I have this verse from a song by Sam Hui, the great Hong Kong singer in the 70s(in Canto) and, for value-added, have the translation by Google. HOPE it makes sense. ENJOY !!!

    ?????????????????
    ???????????????
    ???? , ?????. ???????????????? – ????????????????.

    Translated:

Annual meetings at 68 feet rheumatism in his back are crisp gas decline. People to stifle two peanuts I have to swallow the left channel sound bone. Sigh under the double-distilled, playing cards pumping water. Looking back the past song of sentence is always drunk with the wine should be at the present – always looking back over the last song should be at the present period have drunk wine.

  4. Hi Daniel

Laughed reeli loud at this atrocious translation of the classic cantonese oldie. Think Sam H will faint at this.

What the fook is ‘annual meetings at 68’??!! and ‘feet rheumatism in his back are crisp gas decline’?? Kekekekkeee…..

This happens to be one of my favourite songs and even singing it now is still so meaningful, beautiful and right on and to think it’s been translated or rather disected to such an unbelievable level is just ludicrous.

Wonder what is the translated title? Let me guess, ‘Have alcohol should this morning drunk’? Kekekekee again……..gosh.

    Nice sharing.

  5. Haha Geraldine…sharp as usual.

I didn’t pay much attention to the comment until you mentioned it.

Reeaally….we should ??????? lor which will be easy for me since my level of tolerance to alcohol is non existence….heee

  6. Ivan-L’s Google translation has made my crack at writing reflections – my prelude to a memoir (every chinaman, malay, indian writes memoirs today) into a donald duck quack. Reading it, I too burst into laughter.

But of cos, what I said in Chinese @ #1 essentially means this :-

” Hello wine, come make me drunk today?
For I care not what cometh tomorrow,
Think before do, then there’s no cause for repent,
Cherish it if it’s bliss that comes?
Regret not if it’s catastrophe that greets.

Over these not long not short 4 years in SHC?I have again journeyed thru the “Happiness, Anger, Sorrow and Joy” of life.

At the beginning, I was Terence and many others’ unmistakable “kwai lan kia”, given to playing a fool and mocking others. In a bad mood, I wd find someone to berate. Those I “killed” if not in the hundreds, must be in scores. Over time, I realised I was wasting away the shine and vibrance in my autumn years? So silly of me.

Every Meet comes with an Exit. In love, it’s sweet; sadly, exit dont close the door to memories.

Adhere to my principles. Wont go out of my way to please another. Even more repugnant I feel if flattered by another unless it comes from the bottom of his heart. Whether it’s from his heart has to be tested over time. I will not change this attitude.

I ask not what the future is but to you SHC, I say, thank you for the beens. “

  7. Wow lau Tim-L!
U veri profound n “chim” wit ur manda-rim.
    So hd 2 ask google 4 a translation…
Anyway, wit d boss writing such a LONG post n putting effort/time, he wil b short-changed if there is only jus ONE post n in “chin-na” some more.
So I cho-cho n ka-ka-jiao-jiao a bit to rattle some interest to this thread lor!
Now, i m beginning to sound n write like Ah Huatx3 oredi!!!
    Hahaahhaaa..

  8. Ivan & Daniel:
You guys certainly bring and let us know a whole new meaning
    of “loose translations”!

Firstly I was just scrolling down the English translations,
not really able to decipher the “mambo jumbo”.

With my reading glasses on, scrolled up to read the Chinese version of #1 & #3, wow……nearly fell off my bed!!!!

    Have a nice day, everybody.

  9. Cin Cin, Lily!

Yes, ‘have alcohol should this morning drunk’ indeed.

Once we are ‘annual meetings at 68’ kekekekee (if we even live that long)and start reflecting/look back and go ‘I have not lived; what the fook have I done to my life?????’……..so sad. Totally.

  10. Am very pleased that many creations get many more others to laugh, nvm that I may be the brunt of the joke or a catalyst.

Personally, I am uneasy with changes. Corporatising SHC is a mammoth change, a direction if taken, is hard to reverse.

But if this is the direction to go, I will only say that I have had great times living thru SHC as it was and within its taboos and parameters.

The future is too long a time to live thru or for anyone to tell what it is…….so we buy insuarnce against abduction by durianas for a 1-day trip for some security vs the unknown.

So be happy with what it is today. Drink and get drunk. From me, one who drinks milk siew dai fresh from the udders.

  11. Hi Tim,

Yes, I note your comments on corporatising SHC. However, that’s not exactly what I plan to do.

What I was hoping to achieve is that besides individual memberships, which we currently have, we will now have corporate memberships. Let’s say that there is a Tim Liu PLC. The company has an objective to be part of the longer term interest of SilverHairs in Singapore. If TL Plc sees something interesting in SHC and worth participating in, it can join as a “Corporate member”.

As I had mentioned before, SilverHairsClub.com will move on as it is now, with a club manager and its own team of EOs and ECs. Membership concept remains unchanged.

Hopefully, the new Corporate members can help SHC achieve its objectives wider and further. The conditions are still being worked out.

    Thank you.

  12. Hi Terence

Whether it’s SHC.com or Corporate, what i see is we’ve a bargaining power (but never use it?) to approach any company whenever shc members using their services (in a group of 5 or more). We can also “test run” new set ups especially ‘elderly’ related products and food outlets. We give them business (hence help them to survive) in return of special discounts, sponsorship or other remuneration…

  13. Hi Frisna #12,

I am glad you raise the topic of engaging companies with the aim of providing discounts to SHC members. Perhaps, I have been too cautious, and have not entertained such ideas in the past. I was concerned with an overdose of advertising on this forum.

Would you be interested to work with me, on bringing this idea further? You can be sure, I will say yes, if you say yes.
