SHC September news update, 2013

Dear SilverHairsClub members,

Since 2005, SilverHairsClub has been running almost without much changes since day 1.  However, I have since become very busy with my work schedule and travel.  As you know, I have been looking for someone to take over the running of SHC.  This has not been forthcoming, and in mid Aug 2013, I have decided to pass the operations and most of the management of SHC to a committee.  The Club invited members to come join the committee, and a few members responded.  As of Aug 2013, the committee was formed.  This decision was taken after a brainstorm meeting on how to set up the SHC committee.  The thinking and planning are all documented and reported in the Club’s forum.

The committee will manage the Club, instead of under a single person, myself.  A committee might be slower in response, but I believe it will be more efficient.  I hope to see more imagination and great creativity in the way, SHC runs.  Our aim is to have between 7 to 9 members in the Committee, under an elected Chairman.  This position of Chairman will be selected by the committee members.  A new Chairman will be decided on 01 Feb 2014.  Currently, we have only 5 committee members, namely Lily Ho, Caroline Gee, Geraldine Ting and Dolly Lim and myself.  While the committee will run the Club, each committee member has a specific role.  The current committee has a tenure of 2 years from mid Aug 2013.

I like to elaborate on the roles.

1.  Geraldine Ting – this role aims to promote and increase website readership and participation of SilverHairsClub.com.  We have a readership counter, at the bottom of the website.  The Club leaves it to her imagination and creativity as to how to increase readership and participation.

Geraldine Ting also takes over the role of media contact.  She will be the sole contact with the media, and this role aims to promote SilverHairsClub to the public and external organisations.

2.  Dolly Lim – this role is to increase our “One member, and one EO activity” target.  I like to make it clear that this role does not require the committee member to organise activities, although she may organise EO activities, as an individual member.  Again, the success of this role is depended on creativity and imagination.  It also depends on the support of all members.  If you have not organised an EO activity before, please speak with Dolly.  The monthly gathering is a strictly EO event.  EO events are strictly for members only. Something might just pop up.

3.  Caroline Gee – this role is to increase and promote EC activities.  Many members have their own hobbies and interests.  If you organise an activity to share with other members and your friends, this is an EC activity.  EC activities are generally left to the imagination and creativity of each individual member.  If you wish, to share with other Singapore Silverhairs, your interests, organise an EC event or speak with Caroline Gee.  EC events allows you to interconnect your non-member friends with your newly found SHC member.  The aim here is to identify and encourage members to share their private interests, eg potlucks, crafts, tea sessions, etc.

Caroline is also the SHC committee secretary.  The Club committee meets once a month.

4.  Lily Ho – this role requires the person to moderate, approve and resolve issues within the content of the SHC forum.  Lily can delete and moderate or change any text in the forum, with special emphasis on the club taboos and other current guidelines.  Lily jagas all spams and illegal entries in the Club.

5.  Terence Seah – the current Chairman.  As agreed at the brainstorm committee meeting, this role will be appointed by the committee members, the next being 1 Feb 2014.  I shall give as much of the decision making processes to the 4 members of the committee.  I shall still continue to manage the PaperClips project, the Men’s night and the Business round table which have yet to kick up.

6.  The 3 other roles to engage non-active members, finance projects and corporate membership are still waiting for someone to hands up. More details later.

So, please welcome the new committee members, support them and speak with them.  They have different ideas on how to manage the club, besides each of them having their own style of speaking and thinking.  Let’s give the committee a chance to work, for the next two years.

Just read this. Congrats to all of you! Terence has chosen wisely indeed.
Wish I could find the time to participate, sigh.

    Terence,
One suggestion. Perhaps one or two men besides you, could be included to strike a balance?

    1. Hi MaryC,

Yes, I would like very much to have some men participation in the committee.
So far, I have yet to receive men participation. I still keep the options open.
So, on MaryC’s call, if any men has read the role scope, and is interested to join the committee,
      please write to me.

  8. Tailo Yew Kwong, Richard and Mary – Thank you. :)

Thank you too, to those who sent their best wishes and congras in private.

    Mary
There were guys being invited to join the Committee but none of them take up the offer. One state his condition – that he Heads the Committee. So you see, it is not that we do not want to have men in our Committee. It is a thankless job with certain amount of time commitment that not many are willing to take up.

It there is anyone willing to take up the remaining posts please feel free to raise your hand and write to Terence at : Admin@Silverhairsclub.com

  9. Thank you partner, Richard and Mary C for your well wishes and support. Very much appreciated.
Mary, we would love to have some thorns amongst the roses. However, not the type that will poke you till you bleed. But the type that will “protect” and grow together with us.

    Cheers
    Carly

  10. Congratulations Lily, Dolly, Carly and Geraldine.

It’s been awhile since I visited this website so perhaps that is why I am not on the mailing list?

Have checked my profile, no change in email add.

  11. The committee is formed because Terence is extremely busy and is unable to run his club 24/7.

The criteria to be on the committee is TEAM SPIRIT.

We must work together as a team and the only objective is for the good of the Club; no agenda or for personal glory. The committee is not here to be bowed to or kowtowed to.

Members support and encouragement is our motivation.

So, if any male member feels he is able to take up one of the remaining roles and is a team player, do contact Terence at : Admin@Silverhairsclub.com

  12. Aiyoh Lily, who is that man? He wants to head the committee?? Better not to have that kind around.
    Caroline said it perfectly.
I wish you all success and lots of fun and who knows? One day I may be able to join in an activity or two. Right now, the two kiddies are my priority, especially now that my daughter has gone back to work, part time, with her hubby, who is travelling quite a bit.
    Cheers

  13. Thank you, Oi Cheng.
Like you, I did not receive the news letter too and I haven’t changed my email address. May be the system detected I have more than 1 email address?

Whatever is the reason, for those facing the same problem, simply write to Admin@Silverhairsclub.com to confirm your preferred email address.

  14. Dear fellow members,

Please be informed that Geraldine Ting will no longer serve on the SilverHairsClub committee. I like to thank her for what has been done earlier, and hope she will continue as a member of the club.

The work of the committee continues.
