Can you write a motor cycle?

Some of you drive or take public transport in Singapore.  For me, I can bicycle but not motor-cycle.  No licence too.  However, there are some remote areas in this world where there are very few cars.   Take Vietnam, Laos or Thailand, for example.   I think it is a good skill to be able to ride a motor cycle.  Helps one to get around quickly from the house to the provision shop. or just to go out and get a newspaper.

Hi everybody, as a show of hands, can you ride a motorcycle and has a license?  If you cannot, I guess the only way is for you to find someone who can, and you be the pillion rider.  You dont need a motor cycle.

Re your post. Do you mean ride & not write? Anyway, both I also can’t…… don’t know much about motorcycles & won’t dare ride on it. But guess it must be fun if I am being pillion.

  2. Not write, but ride. Smart, eh?

Somewhere on one corner of my brain, I have a plan to travel to a remote place in Vietnam, with one of the longest coastline in the world. Where there are few cars, and only the motorcycle is the main form of transport.

The roads are clear, and one can easily rent 50cc motorcycles for $3 dollars a day. Fresh sea breeze, local seafood and wide open South China sea. Another of my 3 month short-term retirement dreams. For the men, if you cannot ride a motorcycle, you can easily engage a lady motorcycle rider. HoChiMin city will come.

I think got to start looking for a low-cost carrier to HCMC.

Only those who can ride a motorcycle can join. I have to get a Class 2B License first.

  3. Hi Terence

I got my class 2B licence in 2006 when I was out of job. It was my first time in my life that I ride a 200cc bike. It was huge man, much bigger than my bicycle leh.

It was beautiful riding on the road with the air blowing in your face.

At that time I was thinking of riding up to Thailand,Cambodia,Vietnam and than to China and in time for the Olympic It will be FIT for maybe 2years.

I have put it on hold. but the thought is still there.

Terence, Please get your licence so that you could lead us to your second home.

    regards

  4. Hi Terence,

I have license to ride a bike. A friend of mind have a motocross bike and I can borrow from him.

Just fix a date and we are on for the expedition. But you still have to get your license first, unless you want to piggy ride!

  5. Hi Douglas, Dan,

I have updated a list of motorcycle riders. I intend to keep this list, until the next motorcycle holiday.

  6. Hi Terence

I don’t quite understanding, you said “only those who can ride a motorcycle can join” and at the same time, you indicated “if you cannot ride a motorcycle, you can easily engage a lady motorcycle rider” (i.e. to say Pillion rider), so either way, can or cannot ride no problem, correct? Pl clarify…..

  7. Hi RonL,

Veery right. You see, some men are not comfortable holding a girl’s waist, when sitting as a pillion rider. To participate, the men have to ride their own rented motocycles.

I think this is fun, and I am yearning to go to HCMC and the sea resorts again.

  8. I have two regrets in life :

One is not taking up music when I had the chance. (when you’re 6 years old riding bicycles in the back line was more fun than piano lessons). The other is not getting my motorcycle licence when it was so easy then. Those days you just get a ‘L’ plate, ride around until you’re confident enough to take the test.

Once I actually tried to take it up again at the driving school. I took up the motorcycle course but at that time I was so busy at work that I did not finish it.

I can ride a motorcycle though and do ride in places where they don’t check your licence.

Some years back I did a trip on a rented Honda Cub from Ho Chih Minh City to Vung Tau. It’s not a long journey, about 80 km but on a 80 cc motorcycle, the journey took like forever.

  9. Hi Terence,
Long to go HCMC 1 day. Always a pillon rider on motor bike becos cant ride it but I’ve a Class 3 Driving License.

Maybe it wld be good to plan a group trip leh??

  10. Hi Suzhang #3,

I was wondering why you change my “ride” to “ride”. It’s my mistake. It’s “ride”.

And yes Rene, can wait until next year, because the HCMC trip is next year, when the air is cold, and it’s warm and cozy hugging the motorcyclist.

The dates will be determined by the budget airlines. If and when we get a good fare, we go, may 4-5 days. Keep it fun, cheap and easy.

  11. Jeffrey, Janet, Doyglas, DanH, Pearlynn, yes, we go HCMC next year.

Slowly we let those keen raise their hands. When we have enough numbers, it’s quite fun. Those no license, maybe the Nitendo Wii can help.

  12. Hi Terence,

Stephen and I are very keen to join in motorbike holiday. We used to ride motorbike to work during our kampong days.
Also I took motorbike to/from work in Bangkok to avoid traffic jam. The last time we motorbiked was in Pulau Pangkor in Malaysia…really really fun!!!

    Our available dates in 2008:

    17 Dec – 3 Feb
    12 April – 27 April
    5 July – 20 July
    27 Sep – 12 Oct

    Thanks!

    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  13. Hi Douglas,

You are lucky you have so many days of leave to clear. Or you resigning? Do you need pillion riders? Ah Nee, Susan and I, how about that? 3 bikes, 3 girls. Or I go take motorbike licence first?

  14. Hello Lina,

Today I can breathe a little but not so for Suzhang, she is panting in the office. Tell you hor, I don’t want to be a pillion rider nor passenger. Imagine you are expose to the polluted air on the road…..breathe in the carbon mon’oxide from the car exhause pipe and then your face blackened with soot like “pow kong”. Also can be very uncomfortable if the weather is hot and humid. Aiyah….we better go cycling at East Coast lah…fresh air and nice scenery & greenery. :)

    Ah Nee

  15. This riding trip lagi sound fun!..

OK lah…Lina,AhNee,Suzchang,Carly & me will go take exam for motorcycle! If anyone fail, then we can tompang lah..or just ride without legal licence..after all Terence say remote countryside..no mata2!..hhhmmm

Wei wei! Lina..u must be rider, cannot be pillion..bcos u got sexy long legs, when the motorbike stop yr legs sure will touch the ground..& then when the rider zoom without u knowing..u be left behind lor!…hahaha..so very funny!

  16. Hi Ah Nee, Nor,

Why is Susan panting? From too much work ah? So she up to her neck in office work? I went on a motorbike b4 in Malaysia and sure enough when I reached my destination my face was covered in soot! Must cover up like Aminah first! Nor, you are really funny. How not to laugh with you around. But I was thinking some people are so adventurous, hoping to go to China for the Olympics. Too far for us, hor?

  17. Hello Dolly,

Don’t think its practical for us ladies to ride the motor cycle or be the pillion passenger lah. Remember at Bangkok, we hopped onto the “toot toot”….gosh ! zoom here and zoom there, very dangerous & quite frightening though thrill….. not to think about on the motor bike in Thailand with heavy traffic flow !!! Sorry hor guys, I am not discouraging you all, but if you are brave enough…why not?

    Ah Nee

  18. continue……

Oh ya Terence, since no license for motor cycle, I can cycle a bicycle. So when are you back to Hougang, I go and take the foldable bike from you? :)

    Ah Nee

  19. Wei Jane jie mei, if u r interested 2 learn cycling, come n enjoy us every 3rd wk Sat at ECP la.. Lily/Jade and Yew Kwong oso can teach u 1 la.. I m sure u r 2 master tis lor.. ai mai…

  20. I would love to pillion ride leh …. side-saddle …. or otherwise. Looks like this is another fun event for the boyz only ah.? :(

Terence, you very the bias leh …. ^;^ What about girls who dare to ride without licence huh.? Ay sai bo.?

  21. Hi all SilverHairs,

Cycling is such a healthy activity. The cycling organisers encourage you to cycle, it’s a life long enjoyment. Come learn to cycle, one day we will cycle Asia and the rest of the world.

Give it a try. It’s easy.

    Terence Seah

  22. Hi Lily Ho,

I am rarely biased. It has always been a joy to see SHCians enjoy their Silver years. Go ahead, rider or pillion rider. Enjoy our years, and make it possible. See u all when you retire. Also earlier if you can.

    Terence Seah

  23. Hi Terence,

I have a valid Class 2 driving licence but haven’t riden a motorcycle for a very long time. I think I should be alright with some practice.

    Regards,
    Andrew KOH

  24. I have revised the list of SHCians who can ride or who love to be pillion riders on this thread.

The idea is if we can find substantial numbers, we can go for an overseas motocycle remote remote holiday in Vietnam, and enjoy one of the longest coastlines in the world. Few cars, and only us jumping from bay to bay. Have a look at the thread, and let us know if you can ride a motorcycle or can sit as a pillion rider.

    Terence Seah

  25. Back to “Can you motocycle?” I have not forgotten the plan to travel around Vietnam on motorcycles in 2009. Instead, I see we have more pillion riders, and rely on motorcycle taxis. Well, last few days, I am in Ho Chi Minh City for a few days, and I am beginning to have some doubts on the safety of this trip. So, I shall close this wild dream. Another time, then.
