Alan Tham – Profile

Hi folks,

I retired in 08 after 30 odd years with my last employer, an American company with it’s head office and main plant in Ft Worth, Texas.   It was through our long time friend Sockie that my wife Anne, and I signed up as members very recently.  We have a boy and a girl, and 2 grand children, ages 4 and 5.

I have all my life enjoyed the outdoors. First it was snorkeling & scuba diving, then for many years it was distance running.  I have also done my fair share of cycling, camping, tramping and the up until the last few years, sea kayaking.  I used to fish a lot, it was almost an obsession.  Owing to recurring knee injuries, I am now confined to more passive activities like walking and line dance, and I play golf a couple of times each week.  Country music still rank favorite even though I am beginning to learn enjoy Blues and Jazz.  This last Christmas  I bought myself an electric guitar on impulse.  If I continue to put in an hour each day, I ought to be able to strum a few oldies by the coming Christmas! I tried singing, but have yet to find the right key!

My wife loves learning cooking, and we occasionally invite friends home for  simple meals she prepares.  She line dances as well.

We look forward to meeting and making new friends in the club.

Cheers

Alan & Anne Tham

Hi folks, First heard of this club from good friend Sockie (Sock Cheng). I will turn 64 in a few months. It's been a year now since retirement, and I continue to enjoy the new found freedom. Even my health has benefited! Just the other day, my doc told me that my BP has gone down noticeably! I have remained active physically, walking the golf course some mornings and line dancing in between days. I enjoyed listening to jazz, blues and country music. My wife and I have 2 grown kids and 2 grand children from our girl. I certainly look forward to meeting with you folks and the beginning of a new friendship. Cheers Alan

  4. Hi Patrick,

So you love soup, right? We had black chicken herbal soup for lunch today. This at the food court la, not the soup joint you folks are going to.
It must have been during one of those SMs (senior moments) that I’ve omitted my age, not intentionally mate. I will be 64 some time this year. If you intend to buy me lunch, I will let you know the exact date, ha ha! Look forward to meeting you some time.

    Hi Suzhang,

Sorry to disappoint! You ought to see how heads turn each time my name is called in the public…..can be embarrassing sometimes!

    Hi Sockie,

You are always welcome, just as long you come with them crabs and prawns, ha ha!

Also a small note of appreciation and thanks to those nice and friendly folks we met yesterday.

    Cheers

  5. Ya man Suzhang, I really got eyes no see Tarzan’s….. brother….. though you thought he is Roman’s brother kekekeke…..but if he plays the guitar well and learn to croon than he can be Alan T(h)am, the Singing Tarzan LOL

    Sockie

  6. Hi Charles,

Thanks for your welcome note. Likewise, we look forward to
meeting you in the very near future.

    Sockie,

Do you know the origin of Tarzan’s or-ee-or?

    Cheers
    Alan

  7. Only hear people say ‘or-ee-or Tarzan bo cheng kor’ …..soooo I guess something must have happened in his state of ‘undress’ that cause hiim to scream so loud ya kekekekekekek

  8. Hi Alan

Notice you play golf twice a week. Do you have time to join us for a game sometime?
Normally our defacto Golf Captain Ronald Wi would ask you this question but I have not heard from him for awhile. Rumour has it that he has grown 10 years younger and much more handsome. I speculate that he must be busy fending off women or just playing the 19th hole again and again.

  9. The “19th hole” is always played in an enclosed space, hehe !
At our age, the golf club bends easily to hit a “birdie”, hahaha!
Alan, I will be 64 this June like you. Have stopped playing golf since 1999. Now I play pocket billard, hahaha ! Yes! we will go for herbal black chicken soup soon. Good for me ! For ‘driving’ strength.

  10. Hi Alan and all,

Welcome to SHC and to join us for golf. Thanks Tian Soo for covering me as I was busy trying to locate Kitaro up in his tree house. They would not allow me to see him in person unless I shave and trim my hair as I looked too much like him already for artistic and security reasons.

We are having a game on the 23rd Mon PM, at Sembawang, so if you are keen to join us just email me at bswi@yahoo.com .

Hi Patrick and all, Dont worry if you cant drive as hard, and your short iron is no longer straight and if you keep losing your balls. The rules in golf is not how hard your drive is or how straight you short iron is or whether you need to use more than one ball. It is how you play the game using as many strokes as you need that satisfy your needs. That is why there are 18 holes and 3 other friends to help you to arrive to the 18th or 19th hole.

    Cheers

  11. Ronald, sounds awesome, “stroke by stroke” slow and you will enjoy more. Not double bogey, but bogey, bogey, bogey….always par excellence.
The real thrill and ecstasy !! haha.
And do you know why golfers always bring an extra pant to play golf. They afraid they get a hole in one. hahaha !
Guess you have heard this joke before as a golfer.

  12. Hi Ronald,

Thanks for having me in the golf loop. Sounds like my kind of game the way you described it. Unfortunately PM games not good for me as part of my duty as a grandparent includes, but not necessarily be confined to, having to ferry 2 grand kids home each day from school. My wife makes sure they are cleaned and fed before sending them back in the evening.

What sort of rates you guys paying at Sembawang? Are there any Keppel members in SHC?

    Patrick L,
So when are you coming out from retirement? Let’s go hit som balls. Never mind straight or bent or how many strokes, we will eventually find the holes!

    Cheers,
    Alan

  13. Hi Alan & Anne,
    Welcome to the club.
Since you like the outdoors, have you ever thought of roller-blading. I find it a low impact sport which is why I took it up.

    see you soon!

  14. Hi Andrew,

Thanks for writing. Is roller-blading very similar to roller skating? So what do you folks do during a session? Where and how often do you meet?

    Cheers
    Alan & Anne

  15. Hi Alan nice to have another golf kaki, suppose I am the only active lady golfer in SHC, there is a game on for the
23rd by Ronald Wi. I hve arrange a game to JB on 29th of this month with one nite stay back on the 30th tink that
Ronald and his kaki will be playing on the 30th most welcome
to join. Its in Pulai Springs JB. Janet Loo

  16. Hi Janet,

Thanks for writing. Yes, I’ve heard from Tian Soo and Ronald. Unfortunately, I am unable to make it for the game, but I look forward to meeting up with you folks shortly.
I get to play about twice a month when I was working. Since retirement last year, I try to regularly walk 9 holes twice a week. I’m the “spare tire” among my kakis for weekend games. Usually called upon only to make up a flight. Persoally, I rather enjoy the serenity and leisurely pace of a weekday walk and try avoiding weekend games. I have played a few JB courses but never the Pulai Springs. Will keep a lookout for future SHC golf postings.

    Cheers
    Alan

  17. Hi Alan,
Roller blading is similar to roller skating & ice skating. roller blades use wheels like roller skates but these wheels are all in a line like the blade of an ice skate.

Blading is sometimes done within SHC together with the cycling sessions. Ronald & Kathryn blade pretty often on their own.

  18. OK Andrew,

I have roller and ice skated before, but that’s a long time ago. But I guess it’s like riding a bicycle, once you’ve learnt how to balance, it’ll come back quickly after putting in a few hours of practise. I will contact you guys once I am ready to take a few falls, ha ha.

    Cheers
    Alan

  19. hi alan
