Reflection – Cafe Training

Since coming back frm Haikou, hv been klkk 4 almost a mth n finally concluded dat I shd keep myself occupied if not, will b gaining lots of extra kilos liao.  So I kar kar approached Terence tellg him abt my intention 2b trained at d cafe so that I can mann d Cafe on every Saturdays.

For d past 2days (Mon n Tues), hv been under training by the 3 Shi-Fus (namely Venika, Margaret and Rebecca).  Wahpiangz, manning a Cafe is reli not as ez as I tot.

Learning from scratch, right from opening door, switching on about 20 power points every morning without fail is a must for us.  Making coffee is also a kangwho especially 4 sum1 like me whom dun drank cofi at all.  Shi-Fus told me dat I must learn 2 taste these differences so tat I am able to tell what is d difference btwn latte n mocha, etc etc.. heng arh, at least hv some hands-on to brew a few kinds of cofi n tasted them liao.. Hmm… not 2 bad 4 a start lor..

But I must admit, making different kinds of sandwiches is still a great hurdle 2 me… Blur blur but Shi Fus were reli patient n giving me a lot of practices lor.. Holding a knife 2 cut bread oso proved 2b a great challenge 2 me hor.. But m sure, will definitely able 2 clear these hurdles soon… :)

Heng-arh, Sat operation only 4 drinks and sandwiches.  If hot meals are included, I will hv 2 surrender liao..  Just by looking at Venika preparing all these stuffs oredi saw lots of stars stars liao… But I did promised them dat once I m ready, I will definitely going 2 learn these as well.

My 3 Shi-Fus told me dat in order 2 enjoy working at d cafe, we must hv d passion, if not, we wun b hapi as there were indeed lots of works around every mins 4 us 2 look into.  Hence, I reli saluate them 4 their passion.

In order 2 make sure dat I still remembered what I hv learnt from Shi-Fus, I m going back again this Fri for a refresher course lor..  Wish me luck… everyone.. Cheers… Dolly

  1. Hi Dolly,

Belated welcome back to Sg. Admire your courage to learn all those new skills and to man the cafe all by yourself. If you need a toilet break, how? LOL …just joking.

All the best. Am sure you won’t let your boss down. :)

  2. Hi Dolly

Good for you! Great initiative and I am certain you’ll be preparing hot meals with your eyes closed in no time.

All the best and will drop by when I next visit to try your culinary skills.

    Take care,

  3. Hi Dolly,

You may not know me here as I’m a newcomer.Just got myself enrolled with SHC yesterday. Btw, I would like to wish you all the best in your training and I am sure you would one day succeed by sheer willpower. If there’s a will….there’s a way.

    Happy training.
    Wella

  5. Hi Dolly

Few days ago, I was passing through the café . You waved your hands from the café. So I went to the café for the first time.

From that time till I left, you as the person-in-charge of the café, took good care of me.

Even under training, you are very good. Best of luck.

    Francis

  6. Dolly

The best job I had so far is driving a van delivering vegetables to houses in Singapore. It even beat the years I spent in Fleet Street, London, wearing 3 piece suit to work each day.

I think you will enjoy being a Kopi Ah Soh if you like it yourself. Remember that you are working for yourself and not for others. If you are happy, it will be contagious and the work will be light.

  7. Dolly,
You will do well in whatever you do and wherever that may be.
    Wish you the best.

Life is too short not to eat good food or drink great coffee.
Will come to the cafe when I am in town.

  8. Dear Dolly mei mei,

I agree with all other SHCians who encourage you to ENJOY what you do. That is very true because being happy depends on how you see the work you do. I believe you can do it as you’re very good with people. Working alongside others in a tight constrainted space can be stressful at times (langah here, langah there) but the joy of working in a cafe is you get to meet new people (customers), be of service to them and see them enjoying their drink or food. Satisfying tio bo?

I admire your willingness to learn and that’s what life is all about for those of us who wants to keep our minds active.

    Jia you! Jia you!

    Cheers
    Ros

  14. U go girl…U sure can one….I wil surely come (albeit not often :-))if u are on duty weekdays.

  15. Haha, Steven-N, what a comparison tho there’s an thinny whinny wee bit of snide in it but that’s alright.

Dolly-L is 1 of the first SHcians I know and to me she’s an extremist. To some, she’s extremly charming; to others, she can come across as a pecking hen.

So, she will always have her share of friends giving her all the encouragement she deserves.

  17. Hi,

Just Kaypo and a friendly guidance…..

In Japanese culture,”GAMBATE” is a word in Japanese that persons of higher rank use for persons of lower rank, though this is a bytalk in Japan.

  18. Steven-N, that I have mis-felt a man;s feeling has to be true otherwise I cant hold my head up and be counted as being still straight.

    ????????????? ?????????????????

    ??????“???”??????????????????????????????

  19. A quiet Sat morning. Understand there was only one customer before me.

Tried the latte ……mmmmm not bad… much to my liking.
Had chicken pie & curry puff … something simple so that Dolly have time to chat with me rather than spending time preparing my lunch. Just as I was finishing my lunch, Daisy came to lunch too. Yay…..

To the si-fus, you did a great job in training Dolly.
Buddy, you are doing good! I shall come for lunch on Sat as long as you are there.

  20. RonL, tks u 4 encouragement. Chin chai la, whether word use 4 higher rank to lower rank or vice versa, still an encouragement 2 me lor, tio bo?
