  1. Hi Yew Kwong,
I am looking forward to this tour. Please put my name down for it. Btw which part of BHG are we meeting??? There are quite a number of entrances to it.
    See you then and thanks………….Jie

  2. Hi Mary

The designated entrance is the one tat faces direction of Victoria Street n Bugis Square. If U r refering 2 the one facing Raffles Hospital, its the rear entrance. Just enter n walk straight 2 the front entrance.

  3. Hi YK,

It must be years ago, and I cannot remember where the Chendol stall is. But, if we find it, Chendol for everybody is on me.

I look forward to meeting everybody who has an interest in participating in the SHC Flea Mart.

Wow, you have 3 events in one weekend.

    Terence Seah

  4. Hi Yew Kwong,

Please count me in will definitely be there.

Hmm yummy chendol, will be even more yummy cos it’s on Terence ha ha.Thank you Terence in advance for that hee hee.

  5. Hi Fleas,

For those not into cycling after Dim Sum, there is a flea market on Saturday 4-10pm at Home Club Riverwalk. Besides the usual, they have a “Swop Corner” where you can bring 5 items to swop at a $5 fee. I think it is a very interesting concept.

Also, just for interest, there is a a Flea Market at Zouk, Jiak Kim Street from 2-7pm. consisting of 70 stalls on Sunday.

This is only for this weekend….you can be quite fully occupied with others like the Red Dot { this one is more into handicrafts and cottage industries as opposed to second hand goods/flea bitten wares }at Tanjong Pagar or Tanglin Mall, at various times of the month.

Going to them will be a kind of eye-opener for our future SHC Flea mart. Anybody game to go Riverwalk to walk off the Dim Sum lunch????

Anyway, see you at lunch on Saturday…….Jie

  6. Bzzzzzzz …. I will explain the noise later…

Tks to YK for his very educational tour.

Hope everyone has worked out the laksa on line dancing like some of us. Input equal to output to be healthy enough to enjoy your new Lifelong Income hybrid annuity program.

(Food critic note: Sg laksa soup is a little watery and thin. I like my laksa thick enough to skate on. Try Katong laksa for comparison. Don’t expect too much. Perphaps it is the sign of inflation. But if laksa has seen better days, ingredients have definitely shrunk by more than the reported 5% inflation. Either the laksa seller is profiteering or the statisticians have made a “mistake”. And again.)

Don’t worry. You won’t be eating out anyway too much on a $650 per month like most of your peers. Unless you stay in a two man tent from Carrefour, you will probably be missing out on a few meals out per month to make ends meet. You will also taking more walking excercise to save on motorised transport. This is probably why we are all expected to live longer with less. Unlike the good old gluttony days, we will not be able to afford to eat ourselves to an earlier grave.

Back to the “Bzzz” noise. It is the sound of my laser experiment to burn tiny letters on circular silver discs. According to unnamed expert sources, such artistic expression can sell 20 cents worth for $20 for a 10,000 % profit.

Hard work to try hustle at every turn. What to do. Every cent now counts. Real inflation means heavy discounting for present value of future dollar.

PS your $650 per month in ten years on an inflation of 10% per annum is worth $250 today. With $250 per month, you have to give up even your tent for the underpass. Instead of eating, you will be “Ohmmm-ing” under the stars.

Highly unrealistic. What? The $250 per month or the real inflation rate.

What was the increase in your bowl of laksa. What was the increase in your NTUC grocery bills just last few months. You say-leh…

  7. Hi Guys

Tks 4 ur participation. Hope e tour hd given U an idea wat flea mkt at Sg Rd is like.

Jie n Ah Nee hd picked up some best buys. Wat they hd bought, U ask them lor.

We all look fwd very much 2 participate in our upcoming SHC’s flea mkt.

If wat U hv seen 2dy is not enuf, we can arg 4 a pte tour e nx rd 2 China Sq n HV’s flea mkt. Likely 2 fix up on a Sun late morn in Mar 08.

  8. Dear Yew Kwong,

I didn’t know where Sungei Road Flea Market was until today. Although it took me a long time to find you guys (keep getting lost in those one-way streets of Little India), today’s tour was very interesting for me as I have never been to that vicinity by foot before. Thank you for organising.

  9. For the participants who had expected the Sungei Road Chendol, I apologise for not being able to find the place. After talking with taxi drivers and people who work around Sungei Road, I guess there has never been any famous chendol stall in the last 20 years. Well, we try again.

  10. During the Sungei Road tour, a number of interested participants in the Flea mart have expressed that we should start small, and then move along to improve the ideas.

I have also discussed with KT Wong, about the possibility of using the space behind the bus stop at Bali Lane. This is a small area, but it would do fine with 15 tables.

My thinking is the 1st SHC Flea Mart will also be the monthly SHC gathering. Hopefully, the SHC Flea Mart will provide another platform for SilverHairsClub members to meet new and more friends.

KT, can you please ask the venue to work out the logistics for tables, chairs, lights and cost. I shall ask for help in the next one week. The exact date and time will be decided sometime this week too. I would prefer we start this project idea small.

For those who are thinking of participating, please identify your partners who would share the same table. I think we should combine and run the Flea Mart with some fun, meeting friends and selling some of our wares.

  11. Hello Yew Kwong & Terence,

Sungei Road Flea Market is a place that will never be in my shopping venue. If not for the guided tour by Yew Kwong, I don’t think I will go there. It’s interesting to browse through the street with so many street vendors selling all kind of things. We stopped by a stall selling bicycle & accessories, while Lily & I choosing the bicycle bells, we heard the lady vendor scolding the Bangladesh workers, “don’t adjust my bicycle, adjust your bird”……ha…ha..ha….we all really had a good time laughing. The Bangladesh workers continued meddling the bicycle, this time we heard, “don’t touch my bicycle, touch your bird”…..ha…ha..ha…almost “pengsan”. It was an interesting and enjoyable tour with good bargain and good food (Laksa & turtle soup). Don’t see, never buy, see already must buy……guess what I buy!

Thank you Yew Kwong & Terence for initiating the Sungei Road Flea Market Tour. Btw Terence, Lily bought the bicycle bell is meant for you.

    Ah Nee

  12. Yeah Yew Kwong,

I most certainly got a few good buys for next to nothing. Like Ah Nee said its not a place I would go alone except for this outing you organised. The crowd looks kind of rough but there was fun and safety in numbers.

I am looking forward to the next one in March 8 or 9. Is it an outing for us again?????

I really am finding out more and more of Singapore…..and I find it fascinating.

    Once again, thank you………….Jie

  13. Hi Yew Kwong,

Thank you for conducting the guided tour to Sungei Rd Flea Market. I hv enjoyed myself very much. I didn’t realize that there is so much to see at the flea market.

    Regards, Peng Peng

  14. Terence : “……..please identify your partners who would share the same table……”

She/he must be a stoical partner to want to share a table and not a bed with you………..but love overcomes all.

  15. Hi Terence / others, @ 27

Talking abt. SungeiRd Baba /Mamak Chendol,

    How abt a substitute?

    Suggestion :-

I had eaten this chendol more than 10 times
( my favourite). This THAI chendol is called Rommit. A bowl costs $2/ nett.

It contains shred jelly, red rubies, jackfruit slices, sago and coconut milk.
    Very delicious. yummy yum yum.

Try it to get yourself convinced.

Venue : Shaw Towers ( Beach Rd ) at ground floor called Ah Yat Thai.Near the ex food court which is no longer there.

  16. Hi Terence,

In two weeks time, that means you can join the wind & dine party at Andrew’s Condo on 1st March, right? he…he…he…the whisky pourer (Molly)is coming also…Cheers!

    Ah Nee

  17. Also, you will be spoilt with many choices of food just opposite my estate: Laksa, Klang bak kut teh, fried & soup prawn noodles, HKG roasted meats (chicken, duck and ham), tze char, wan ton noodles, kambing soup….Chinatown porridge

After tennis, swimming, gym …..either we have potluck or stroll across within 200 metres to five food centres and have/pick your choice(s).

Then, wine and chatting by the pool, pond and play grounds…..cool, windy and breezy.

Will be updating this “gathering” under the Swimming and Gym – Anyone? thread next week. Please indicate interests there!
