Here’s the medical evidence for us to stay and think forever young.

“Pioneering research at the University of Sunderland has shown that regular exposure to safe low level infra-red light can improve learning performance and kick-start the cognitive function of the brain.”

  1. “………..infra red light is found (to)turn back the brain’s biological clock and reverse the effects of dementia and memory loss………To be young forever is now just a hat trick”.

Infra-red light isnt an expensive commodity so everyone can therefore become young & elephant-brained.

What you didnt tell us is, we’ll all turn red like cooked crabs so mu so that you need more than sombrero & hats to do the trick of shielding…………………

  2. Let’s couple this with what we commonly know about lifestyle changes that will keep us young.

    1. Walk (or other cardio vascular exercises) regularly with a caregiver or other reliable companion. This can improve communication skills and prevent wandering. There is major evidence now that regular brisk walking can reverse Alzheimer more effectively than methods that just stimulate the brain without the cardio exercise.

    2. Use bright light therapy to reduce insomnia and wandering.

    3. Listen to calming music. This may reduce wandering and restlessness, boost brain chemicals, ease anxiety, enhance sleep, and improve behavior.

    4. Get a pet dog.

    5. Practice relaxation techniques.

    6. Receive regular massages. This is relaxing and provides social interactions.

    7. Related to (1) above is another major finding that “prevention of cardiovascular disease may be the most effective preventive measure we have for the prevention of dementia”

Summary : Go out for regular walks with your pet dog and favorite companion, wearing sunshades without a crown. These are the sports visors or ball hats without the crown.

  3. Tim @ #1

Congratulations. You were nearly right. You nearly hit the gold mine.

Mexican sombrero have nice wide brims. Unfortunately, they have crowns. Unless you cut the top, they cannot be used. But that’s the basic idea.

    See examples in

    http://images.google.com.sg/images?gbv=2&hl=en&q=sport+visors

Protect all parts from the normally harmful effect of the sun but leave the crown uncovered to receive natural sun light.

See here for a wonderful invention. An all-round wide brim adaptor that you can wear with or without a hat.

    http://www.ropewise.com/sunshade.html

Make it with a wide enough brim and you may not even need an umbrella.

Backed by this scientific finding, crownless hats may be a major bestseller and fashion item for summer 2008.

Be creative. There are sunshades with solar powered devices like fan and radios. Add in other exciting options like pulse meter, night torch, GPS etc. Match it with clothing and shoe accessories and you can start a new fashion line.

    SHC Flea Market anyone?

  4. Aiyayayah, KT, why did you pick up that sombrero with crown left behind by David Crockett (or was it john wayne) at the alamo leh ? (Heeee, no prize guessing what you’ll pick from the lamolo)

Since Ivan Allan’s time, his sombrero didnt come with a crown….haha cant imagine his race-horse tucks a crown.

Or maybe shintaro’s topee if you want an oriental flavour to shield the shine of the eastern sun?

Or just grab 1 of the many many banana trees that Terence will be receiving from his valentinas? You can feed on the fruits as you enjoy the shade and contemplate wrapping the leaves round the bottoms.
Be creative and you can start a new fashion line, like you hv said.

Then flee to the SHC Flea Market for cover when woodbridge sends its men to bundle you up…………..

  5. Just want to share the wonders of a natural spice called…Turmeric.

    – Lowers LDL cholesterol, aid blood circulation, treats high blood pressure.

    – May help prevent Alzheimers & Parkinson, even reverse it by dissolving plagues in the brain due to aging.

    – Protects liver, detoxify the body

    – Helps digestion, anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic.

    – Especially for the women, good for healthy skin, PMS, breast health, mood and hot flashes, etc

Google “Turmeric” and see what else it can do for the body…it is really a ‘wonder’ herb.

Prata with lots of curry, anyone??

  6. KT@6

Most scientific studies have mainly been carried out on animals only. Knowing the vested interests of medicine, there is little money to be made in a readily available ‘spice’ that can be found on shelves. Big Pharma would rather conduct human studies on a ‘drug’ that they can patent and then manufacture to reap big $$$.

Take a look here for more info, usage, precautions & interactions etc…

  7. Jon @ #7

    Thanks. I stand enlightened.

Tumeric apparently has a very strong following in TIM (Hee-hee, Traditional Indian Medicine)

Actually, a more humble and easier to blend in cooking spice is ginger. Tumeric is related to ginger and I suspect their benefits come from the same class of active ingredients.

    Compare ginger with tumeric

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginger

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tumeric

Both are well researched but the studies are still on-going. We don’t wait.

There is one strategy for us as individuals. We don’t just let our taste dictate our diet. If we did that we are probably taking too much of the wrong things, too often. We conciously make sure that the good things make up a greater proportion of our regular diet.

  8. KT@8,

No need to stand on ceremony lah….
Anything good all of us just share share with one other…

As for myself, I just started taking turmeric pills ever since I learnt about it’s health benefits (300mg thrice a day, bot fm G*C).

Also, my favourite brew is to drink tea halia (ginger tea) ;-)
Lets meetup soon for a cuppa?

  9. Hi
Think back. Our grandma/ma used alot of ginger and garlic and some wine in their cooking. They do have their reasons for using except they cannot explain to us. Ginger to drive out the wind but at that time, wondering why we got so much wind??
Re: Infra red light.Another use- If I am not wrong, it helps with blood circulation.
Infra red light over the knees. the veins get dilated and helps to relieve the pain.
    Be careful- can cause burn.

  10. I am a ginger lover. Usually when I am in Bangkok, I buy it as a drink, hot, and without sugar, cost $0.30 cents.

In Singapore, I cannot seem to get hold of any 100% ginger in powder or ganules form, without sucrose or sugar. If you know where to get them, let me know.

  11. Hi Terence,

The best way to get real ginger juice is the old tried and true method. Pound or grind ginger and then milk it like you would dessicated coconut. Add warm water to dilute to desired strength, add honey to sweeten it.

Kenneth recommended me to Nona Klasik Minuman Halia Segara – Classic Instant ginger drink, made in Malaysia. You can buy this in any Malaysian supermarket. The taste is very authentic and ginger hot. It is a granule instant drink that I would put in my tea. Unfortunately. it has Sucrose in it, which really doesn’t bother me. It sure beats slaving in the kitchen………………Jie

  12. Hi Jie,

Usually, I would buy a few kgs of old ginger from Thailand, and then boil it on a Sunday. Very very good, when hot. Just sometimes, I get lazy and think the sachets are convenient.

I shall make some someday, and bring it to a gathering.

  13. Hi Terence

If you want pure GINGER drinks you can get it at the Indian Serabat Stall at most of the hawker centres in Singapore. Usually I used to order Ginger Tea with milk, is a lovely drink.
You can also get the ginger in powder sachet-form, at any of the NTUC supermarkets, but they are 3in1.

  14. Ginger is relatively inexpensive. Just buy the cheapest in quantity. Broken pieces even better.

Pounding and skinning is the hard work. No need. Just wash and chop up in smaller size. Then grind if you have a grinder. Drained liquid can be used immediately. Dry the residue in sun and keep in air tight lid.

When you need a drink just boil what you need with the skin.

You can use the residue from drink to cook one more time. No waste.

  15. A ha, that gives my ideas ……so simple and workable,KT.

Will try it out this weekends when I go to the market and ask my usual stallholders.

    : ))) Andrew

  16. Hi guys!

Ginger? What I do (like KT) is to clean and cut up into smaller pieces, put them in a blender with some water. Then boil the mixture, sieve into bottles and they’ll keep for weeks in the fridge. You can make your own “sarabat” or
    “teh tarik” anytime!

The ready packs of ginger “tea” are convenient but expensive, and you can find the “pure” ones (without sugar) at Golden Mile Shopping Centre.

  17. KT

    My recipe for teh tarik?

Don’t use Lipton or even Fortnum & Mason teabags.

Use Train Brand tea dust which you can get from NTUC or some local (Malaysian) tea like Ong Sam Leong.

Brew a hot tea, heat your cup and the ginger juice, sugar to taste and “tarek” from left to right mug before serving! Enjoy!

  19. Hi KT

I would like to know if you have an answer to my problem.

Whenever I am in close contact with any electrical appliaces, be it running on a treadmill or any other gym equipment, massage chairs or hand held massage equipment, eletrical heated blanket etc, I always feel pain in my bones and joints one day after using them and my body will have this tired feeling. The pains and tired feeling will last several days.

I did not think that it is caused by using the electrical equipment. When the pain and weakness were gone, I tried it again and the same thing happened. I did that several times and the same thing happened. Otherwise, I usually feel fine. Most times, when I touch metal things, I get this “electric shocks”. I am baffled by all these effect on me.

I am seeking your help because from the varied topics that you have written, I believe you have an answer :)

    Many thanks.

    Warmest Regards

    Caroline Gee

    Easy-lah.

You may be electrocuted slowly by static electricity. Might be something you have done in your past life.

Other than correcting your past deeds, here’s what you can do.

    (a) Use an anti static mat (Sim Lim or flea market)

    (b) Change the material of your wear eg poly to cotton and vice-versa. Switch around and see if it makes a difference.

    (c) Use moisturiser. Use the cheapest OK like Nivea or Johnson. You just need to retain moisture on your skin through your activity.

    (d) Drink more water. Try to sweat more too in your excercise.

    (e) Take a quick shower before exercise.

    (f) You may be too dry. Learn to crack a few jokes. Attend more SHC meetings at Scorebot.
(This is of course a joke but you never know with SHC. Sometimes you have to explain a joke in triplicate. But this is another problem called boring or early dementia.)

    Hee hee

  21. Thank you so much KT for your prompt reply.

Will do as advised and will inform you if it works.

OK will try to go to scorebot and look see too and will bring you carrot cake if I do go by. (This is not a joke)
