Pictures of SHC March gathering & 1st Flea Mart

The photographs of the Flea Mart are out.  Nice blue skies from late Sat afternoon to early evening.  Event Organiser:  LH Jie.  Spot anybody you know?  The Mar 2008 monthly gathering is also held at the same time.

Tell us what you think?  Should we hold the flea mart again?  Once a month, or once a year.  Any suggestions on improving this event.  Good comments or not so good comments, your feedback is important.  Same location, different location.  Same time or different days?

  1. This is a follow-up to the Flea Market Sales :

I have one more item going for sale .. perhaps we can start an on-line market place here? I have $400 worth of vouchers for SONY Ericsson Mobile Phones & accessories. They are in denominations of $50 each. Expiry date of voucher is 31 March 2008. Can bid for single piece. Going for sale .. bid your price. Auction closes on 21st March 2008, midnight. If you miss the deadline, but still wish to bid, contact me.

  2. Dear Jie/Terence,

Congratulations on the success of your 1st FLEA MART! Nice and pleasant atmostphere – wish I was there. Lovely photos too. Would be better if you can display more items on the table.

Is the yellow tiffin (food container) in photo DSCN7782 still available? Thanks!

    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  3. May I suggest to include the names of our SHC members from the Picture Takened. This will help us to remember and recognise them easily.

Obviously some editing need to be done and I know it is time consuming. Any other suggestions?

    Have a Nice Day

  4. Lydia @ 1

I wld suggest U put ur SE vouchers on Yahoo or Ebay’s auction sites where e responses are spontaneous n gd. Especially they are near expiry date, U may not get gd results here.

  5. Hi Mary [Perth }

Yes it turned out to be a lovely day, despite all the gloom and doom predictions.

The tiffin carrier was mine and a lot of people showed interest in it….before it was finally sold.

Well if we do have periodical flea markets, I hope you will be able to come to one. Maybe, give us some pointers. For a first, we did not do too badly.

    Hope to see you sometime…………Jie

    Ya-lah.

And they say table too small. We have enough room to play ping pong. Hee-hee.

We will like your expert input. From marketing to procurement.

For one, we can improve on range and variety. How about a buying house for flea market. We can exchange Asian with Ozzie artefacts. Scorebot is on Ozone Barter which is popular in Oz. We can opt also to use Ozone point to exchange.

Only need to ship few physical pieces to start. We can generate interest from our on-line flea market link. Sell/auction on-line first and stock supply to demand.

    What do you think?

  8. Hi Jie #6,

Colorful tiffins esp those with flowers and fishes are favourites at fleamarts.

For 1st fleamart, you have done well with nice tablecloths and a nice layout for customers to browse in a relaxed atmostphere.

I really love to join SHC fleamart one day!

    Mary (Perth)

  9. We have received various feedback, and here’s one from Lydia Chin, participant of the Flea Mart:

“The flea market was quite successful, on the overall. However, there were enough human traffic from the public, along Bali Lane. Most the the customers were our very own SHC members. Perhaps the next flea market could be held in a more crowded place, perhaps Clarke Quay. It should start in the morning, eg. 10am. Just the afternoon is not enough time.

It would be nice to have lunch or dinner or drinks prepared for those who are selling. We could combine the flea market event with a pot-luck makan session. Last Saturday, after the event @ 8pm, i was tired & hungry. And there were no food or drinks within easy reach. And nobody could offer to even buy a burger or drink for me! Everyone was busy at the talk or looking after his stall. These are my initial thoughts.”

  10. Hi KT #8

No expert lah – just sharing my love to fleamart.

    The process :
    Identity trend or vintage products
Put on sale (online and/or fleamart)
    Procure based on demand.

So far how is the response to sell/auction online for SHC? Can you monitor & feedback on performance?

Flea-mart provides an environment for SHCians to earn some $$, interact & exchange ideas with the public, meet potential new members and enjoy yourself!

    Mary (Perth)

  11. Here’s the feedback from Siew Eng, who participated as a vendor.

“Following is my feedback in regards to the SHC
    fleamart:

    1) Cost saving-Is it necessary to advertise under the garage sales? Fleamart crowds depend on that day passers-by at that location. You may want to get the activity listed under the “5 Things You Can Do Today” which are likely to attract people who have nothing better to do to come to.

    2) Time Duration – Just right
    3) Support and Sales – Very encouraging sales for majority of the stalls and well-supported by the passers-by and SHC members except for my stall. This is my first time participating in a fleamart, may be due to lack of experience in persuading people to buy the art pieces.Anyway, I just took it as an expensive lesson learnt.

    4) Setting up of tables – Tables could have set up prior to the arrival of vendors.

    5) Weather – Good weather. Thank to those SHC members whom prayed.

    6) Overall – Successful!

    Siew Eng”

  12. Lastly, we have another feedback on the Flea Mart.

“Suggestions – More publicity eg. distribute flyers at nearby bus-stops/MRT station. “SHC Saturday Flea Market at Bali Lane, …….”

Have a more carnival atmosphere – play some music to attract the crowd, balloons, and other fringe activities etc.

    Daisy Tan

  13. Hi Terence #10

For those who flea-mart, an ESKY with drinks (sometimes beer), fruits and snacks is a MUST MUST. Good to throw in a flask with hot black coffee.

Clarke Quay – good spot = $$$ but long day. Outside stall can be very hot in afternoon or close shop if it rains.

    Mary (Perth)

Tanglin mall & White sands – evenings cooler, food aplenty.

  14. Hey Mary Lee,

I do agree with you about Tanglin Mall and Whitesands. Both are cooler and there are lots of food and drinks available.

It might be expensive to have the flea mart inside the shopping malls. I think Tanglin mall would be much more expensive.

Whitesands Shopping Centre has the mrt just next door and there is a continuous flow of people. There is also a covered stretch between the shopping centre, the bus terminus and the mrt. Rain or shine, it’s ok. It is also well-lit and the flea market could go on into the night. I have seen some occasional stalls there.

Terence: perhaps inquiry with the SMRT ?

  15. Noticed a post-flea mart sale @#1

Anyone interested in assessment papers from several well-known primary schools?

2006 Chinese and Math Continual and Semestral papers with solutions. @ $10 and $15 respectively.

    E-mail your queries. Tks.

    JassmineT

  16. I address the points brought up.

    (a) On-line Flea Market.

The thread “The flea market that never ends” gives all the instructions of a on-portal for SHC Flea Market. The on-line flea market continues. You can still post on-line and sell or auction your product.
    http://silverhairsclub.com/2008/03/1504#comments

    (b) F&B for vendors

I absolutely agree. Scorebot has a full range of F&B and a package which could include buffett could have been designed for the vendors. Scorebot can run 24 hours and is a fully licensed liquor outlet serving both wine and beer. It is a very normal practise for any open market. All one have to do is ask. We should do this next time.

    (c) Location

An open market is like a travelling circus. It normally makes a circuit of several selected locations. Scorebot can be one but not necessarily the only one. The selection and venue bidding process should be open and transparent. This is the only way to get the best for the club.

Existing locations should be scheduled and promoted. It takes time and effort to build up any location. It takes time and several events before there is consyumer recognition of a destination for certain event.

Remember that it takes also time to find a new location and even more time to negotiate and set up shop for a group of vendors. So start early.

    (d) Organisation

If flea market is to be a standard feature of SHC, a working committee should be set up at once. There are many things to be organised and to be done. This working committee will be working in almost a professional capacity and requires significant commitment in time and resource.

Another way to do this is to outsource the organisation of the flea market to a professional third party. It is expensive and requires a critical size to ramp. At current market rate, the organizer like SHC could probably outsource to MICE operators For a professionally promoted, marketed and operated open market. Let’s get a rough order of cost and commitment. The base setup would be for minimum 100 stalls at $100 per table for a three days event (NB. they won’t run an event for less days). It would probably be closer to $100 per day if it is in enclosed space with air-con. Are we talking about this level?

Of course, the working committee can hire managers to help it to run the event. IMO, it is very hard to get such a person with the necessary experience and expertise and who is not already a professional in the field. Also, the event is not likely to cost less. In fact, costs are probably higher as there are more risks to cover partly because of formalized lack of internal control and process.

    (e) Product Mix

Some stalls get better reception than others. There is little difference between a operator of a mall, kopitiam and flea market. You need to take care of the product mix, advice your tenants, help them to start-up and carry some of their costs.
Sometimes the main organizer will prodvide seed capital in terms of deferred installament payment and/or performance based fees. Anchor tenants with strong image, good products and USP (unique selling propositions) get much better terms. The good will prosper.

    (f) Funding

You have to start with a budget. This will determine how many locations you can target to build up for a flea market project. Every destination requires a quantum amount of money to set up. For a group of say 30 to 50 vendors, a budget of $10K per destination would be a first rough guess. This will cover, say, 3 to 6 events of 3 days each. If successful the subsequent collection from tenants will be able to cover the cashflow. If you intend to move around before proving one location, you will probably have to fork out the budget for all at the same time. The gamble and risk is so much bigger. Eg if you want to run out three untested locations at the same time, you will probably require a working capital of $30K.

  17. Hi Terence/LHJie

Thx for organising SHC’s 1st flea mart. Would like to hear from those who took part in the sale how successful they are. No need to give $$ figures but perhaps % of sale is good enough for us to gauge if viable to hold the next.
18 Bali Lane looks like a good place since buyers can browse, buy and cool off with some drinks.

  18. Jass, i can take a look at the assessment papers. In previous occasions, those were ass papers with wrong answers some of which were discovered by my kid and the rest by me………wanted to over-turn the salesman’s table but cant find him.

    Can you?

  19. Hi Alicia,

I sold $68 worth of goods. The best selling items include mugs, glass animals and condoms. My teracottas did not sell. Customers were mainly Russian and India tourists, as well as Singaporean passer-bys.

The condoms sell very well, and if I were to participate in the Flea mart again, I would probably bring in a box of condoms, colourful, scented and used.

I will also bring all the other colourful mugs, and maybe price them higher than $6.

    Have fun.

    Terence Seah

  20. Jass @ 17

Just a Question. Are these assessment papers from several well-known primary schools been authorised by the respective schools for sale?

If not, I m afraid the CopyRight Law governing copyrights to work of original authors presides.

  21. Tim @# 20

The ass papers are for P6 level. I’m only a part-time retailer hor, but understand the constraints the setters of the ass. papers faced, so mistakes are inevitable. As long as the kids/parents/tutors etc can spot the errors, no real harm done – only a disappointment at the lack of QC.

Am attending Chinese appreciation class at Tan Aminah this Fri at 5p.m. Will you be there to assist? Can bring the papers for your scrutiny.

    JassmineT

  22. Terence, you turning to be a potential entrepreneur and knows where to source in BKK and market what is saleable.

At the rate you are going, Scoreboard will turn out to be SexBoard selling not only condoms, but sex dolls, gadgets, lingerie, books Tongkat Ali, Maxifal cream(Bkk) with KT and Dennis being the products testers.

Cheers Terence keep it up, your weekly flight to BKK and be fully utilised to bring it more goods for you to fly in business class soon.

  23. KT #16

ESKY is a cooler box – daily MUST for us.
A big ESKY in the car-boot for fish & veg. from the markets and a smaller one for lunch & drinks. I carry my ESKY more than my handbag. HEEEE.

    Mary (Perth)

  24. Hahaha, Ron Wie, what a thought.
So, no sex, but can trade in sexy stuff eh? What about ‘used’ lingerie?? Hehe.
Did I hear some people say, “eeeuuuw!!”?

  25. Mary C #15

    How are you?

Tanglin Mall – fleamart stalls lined the outside walk, cheaper than Clarke Quay.

Whitesands is next to minimart/coffees hops, under RC – contact Herald 9824-1323.

Holland V is also a good spot to fleamart.

    Mary (Perth)

  26. I wanted to pay $30 for the 3 x 4 condoms but no matter how hard I tried to stimulate them, the teracottas just lay there dead to the world. Without trying out the expired condoms, I wont take even for free.

When I asked the gals discreetly peeling the boxes “ai mai”, they said “no need”. Obviously, it feels nicer unprotected.

MaryC, if you want my used unedrpants, anytime : dont hv to hint…….

Jass, YK is right with copyright infringement. Schools dont re-produce past exam qns, let alone selling like garang guni.

Thus, many of these ass papers are fakes, and they usually carry the names of famous schools to lure.

Wrong answers provided will harm the unsuspecting as much as it gives the child who spots the mistake a false confidence that he knows better than the school.

I aint sure whether i cd make the time for Gd Fri’s class at TanAminah but will certainly try……..

  27. EEEUUU Tim liu. (Oh, that rhymes!) I’m not a cross dresser thank you. Neither am I a fetish of any kind.

Btw, what’s this talk about “ass papers”? Now who’s giving children “false” impressions? ;-)

Seriously, you could be right about the papers not really originating from the schools they claim they are from. If solutions are provided, they should be without mistakes if they are genuinely from those schools, don’t you think?

  28. Mary Lee, I’m fine thank you. Will you be coming to the D n D?

Perhaps you could inform Terence about the RC regarding the flea mart. I’m not involved as I don’t have anything much left to sell, after giving away almost 3/4 or 2/3 of what I used to own, to the Salvation Army.

I like your name, reminds me of the jingle, “Merrily we dance along, dance along, dance along…..” :-)

  29. Tim @# 29

It’s news to me that these ass papers could be fakes. If they really are, then copyright laws cannot apply, right?

Anyway they weigh as much as the WEBSTER, so unless you are there to scrutinize them, I ain’t bringing them. Let me know by Fri 12 noon?

    JassmineT

  30. MaryC, fetish can be picked. You’re young, teeming with life and its excitement so yr future is bright.

When assessment papers for pupils originate not from the brains but from the rear, they become ass papers, as good as papres used to clean the ……

Even good schools’ exam papers contained mistakes and I had confirmed the mistakes when my daughter found them. I told her : it’s not important to point the mistakes out to the teachers bcos no adult likes to be corrected but do add another feather to yr cap.

Btw, seems like RonOz is piled with some kind of celebrity status………heee, you shd go in sarong for the party…….

  31. Ron @ #25

    Its too dangerous.

I don’t know about you guys but I am already maxed out. If you test on me what happens if the product actually works. Might kill the poor girl.

What about the rest of you who stop short of long.

    Hee hee

  32. Mary @ #27

Get Ter to run in with a bag of compatible Victoria Secrets from Pratunam. Marks & Spencer at Central Chit Lom also advertised a “Trained Bra Fitting Service”. We’ll ask our BIG members to volunteer to be the resident TBS (Trained Bra Specialists.) Dennis and Tim will pay to work.

Impossible? You’re wrong. Here’s the secret. All you have to do is to act effeminated. How many women will check if they are really gay?

Remember ye ole Bugis street. We’ll station our TBS counter near a mobile toilet in the middle of Bali Square.

Tell me when Ter is coming in. I can’t wait to see his expression when customs, acting on a tip off, open his bag full of undies and rubbers.

    Hee hee

  33. Calling Lydia, Alicia, Daisy, Siew Eng, Jassmine, Jie,

The general feedback from the last SHC Flea Mart from vendors was positive. Some of you felt we can develop this further.

You must like Flea Marts. And, if you like to volunteer to work further with me on this project, please raise your hands. We will organise a meeting soon. Basically, the Flea Mart will be open to SHC members only; and only to those who are interested. It can be held once a week or once a month. The frequency, we can decide during the meeting. We would also decide the location and the timing.

Hopefully, once every 6 or 12 months, we would combine this Flea Mart event with the monthly SHC gathering.

Before anything else, if you are keen to be the Event Organiser of the SHC Flea Mart, please raise your hand. I shall keep this offer open, until we find the Event Organiser.

  34. The following used vcds of movies are yours to keep for a donation of $4/movie:

    1. Message In A Bottle, starring Kevin Costner, Robin W. Penn and Paul Newman

    2. Notting Hill, starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.

Pl. e-mail me if you are interested. Tks.

  35. Hi KT, Jie, Jasmine and all participants of the last SHC Flea mart,

I think it would be sad if we do not follow up on the Flea mart project, altho we are still looking at other locations.

KT, would be able to arrange just 2-3 tables every Fri and Sat night. Late afternoon to early evening.

SilverHairsClub will cover the cost. Once we agree on an acceptable amount, we shall offer to SilverHairsClub members.

Look forward to hearing from you.

    Terence Seah

  36. Hi Terence @#44

    1. A weekly flea mart is fine if there’s enough support. I’ll be a vendor only once a month.

    2. 2-3 stalls (tables) won’t generate a flea mart atmosphere.

    3. While scouting for another suitable location, we can hold the 2nd flea mart at Bali Lane. With hindsight and one experience, I think the 2nd flea mart there could be a more colourful affair.

    My 2 cents’ worth.

    JassmineT

  37. Hi Jasmine,

I do agree with your points. Two or three tables may not be so much of a Flea mart. But, I guess we have to build it up over time.

Well, let’s hear from KT. If both vendors and venue supporter can agree, we can go ahead. IF not, we will drop the idea.

    Terence Seah

  38. No problem. Let’s discuss.

It is always better to have more tables for economies of scale, promotion and the creation of a market atmosphere. The first flea market is at the ideal critical size ie 20 tables.

What you can consider is to host 20+ tables and give priority/concessions to SHC members. Tables not taken up will be rented to public. SHC members can also be employed to run the stalls if they are not interested retailing for themslves.

This time round we’ll encourage more SHC memebers to sell F&B.

Under these circumstances the flea market will grow and everybody will make good money. Money earned by SHC as event organizer can be reinvested into growing the flea market business.

  39. Hi KT,

I believe we will have some small numbers taking part in Flea marts on a regular basis. As I said earlier, maybe 3-4 tables. I tend to agree with JassmineT that a few tables may not make viable sense.

The earlier participants do like Bali Lane for its traffic. Can ScoreBot manage a Flea mart, and take care of all the arrangements, without SHC being directly an organiser.

Last night, I met Annie Loh, and she was one of the initiators of the Flea mart. So, I too like to keep the SHC Flea mart project alive, and not let it float away. As the SHC numbers are small, can you invite other groups. As for SHC, I shall organise an EO to work with you on a regular basis.

    Terence Seah

  40. Terence @ #49

Scorebot can manage the flea market on SHC behalf. I suggest that we join a special labour day flea market. There will be lots of supporting activities including concerts and games in the whole Haji/Bali Lane area. This event will be heavily promoted and advertised in different media and channels.

We can run out 20 to 30 stalls with SHC. SHC can have the pick of the tables at special discounted rates. The event can run from Thu to Sun, if we wish, although the main event is only on Thu 1st of May.

We can plan this to be the first of many regular events. We hope to build a special location for SHC flea market. We can help to incubate small businesses for SHC members in many ways including funding, product line, staffing and logistics. Eg if you don’t have a product, we can find products for you on consignment basis ie you pay only when you sell. If you would like just to invest in a little self-running business or test some business idea, we can help to employ people to help you to run the stall. If it works, you can quickly invest more money and expand the busienss.

As in the last flea market, we will provide a on-line listing for your products. This allow you to sell on-line on an on-going basis. The difference is that customers can physically examine the product and save money on delivery if they pick up their purchases at the flea market. We have an auction facility which will allow limited edition items to be bidded at the best price for the seller.

For those who is interested in F&B, they can test market their food business at the flea market through Scorebot.

Hopefully, members can build and grow a lucrative business in time. They can use this business as a rich source of passive income for their retirement.

  41. If the 2nd. Flea market materialises during Labour’s day, I would like to have 1/2 table for selling food NOT for making profit but to share ideas with SHcians.

I find it very FUN to see the sellers at the 1st flea mkt promoting their products.

I am serious abt this in indoor areas as Dolly has pointed out to me,we need licence to sell unlie in malaysia ,mana tempat pun boleh esp. in the sub urban areas.

  42. Hi Steven

Glad u r going 2 material ur idea. But again, pls chk wif relevant agencies 4 clearance unless all r packed type.

I suggest u share ur food wif us rather than ideas. Tis helps us 2 come out wif beta ideas aft ur stomach r 1st satisfied. Can? LoL.

  43. Hi Yew Kwong at 52,

That is why I can sell packed cooked food/desserts in styrofoam boxes at 1/2 the market price esp. for SHC and u still enjoy the taste right.

You may sample 1st. b4 buying. No obligation.

  44. Steven,
I think u shd liaise with KT on this sin Scorebd hv licence 2 sell foods lor.. like dat, u r still abide by the rule. I m sure both of u can worked out sumthing more beneficial lor..

If u nid lobang for styrofoam boxes, i can help u on tis.. Got 1 Snr Ctzn sellg fried meehoon at market n can ask her 2 chk wif d suppl. Like dat, save sum cost i/o buying directly frm shelf lor, rite…

  45. Thanks Dolly for the lobang for the styrofoam boxes.

Well , let Terence and Wong KT be paired EOs to crack their brains on the 2nd. flea Market.

2 brains work better than 1. Rite?

  46. Steven @ # 55 and budding Food Empire entrepreneurs

In commercial food service there are few more little details to work out. Never mind. Scorebot will squash the bugs for you.

Very simple. Just dream of your recipe and be prepared to back its production. Then just show up on the flea market day tentatively scheduled on 1st May for 4 possible days. This may be the launch of your little food empire.

If successful, you can continue to sell in Scorebot like a concessionary in a hypermart. You take care of your product, pay a rent for space/profit-share and keep all the net profits to yourself. Yipeee!!!…

When Terence gets his act together, we’ll call a meeting very soon.

  47. Steven @ #51

You’re sure you want to share table?

What if you draw to share with Terence expanded balloon biz? Or, I hear, some girls are going to stock toys from Geylang. Don’t laugh. They may be the real big money spinners of all.

What are you planning to sell?

  48. Hi Wong KT,

….Then just show up on the flea market day tentatively scheduled on 1st May for 4 possible days. This may be the launch of your little food empire.

    No thanks.
1 day is enough. I do it more for FUN like SHcians on 1st. flea market.

NOT on a commercial food profit making enterprise or franchise.

What’s the point of having so much money and your health deteriorates as a result of making $ $ $ ?

Don’t forget, TOO much STRESS can trigger onset of cancer as everyone has this little ” time bombs” or cancerous cells which will invade our body systems when one’s immunity is very low.

Not all the $$$ in the world can cure.
    Worth it ?

  49. Hi Steven

One key way to beat unhealthy stress is to have and live out the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self discipline (9 aspects).

You would glow and shine, will be strong, healthy and contented.

Have meaningful, helpful and useful friendship, fellowship and worthy activities in all five balanced integrative aspects: physical, mental, intellectual, social and spiritual.

Build up resilience, strengths and active positive living, working and playing.

Money is important so is money management.

Money is the answer to all things – King Solomon.

Just do not be obsessed with it. Be a good steward with money, gifts and talents.

A strong healthy person won’t have any taint of depressing mood at all and not easily offended. He/she knows how to avoid /ignore unpleasant and unworthy things and activities.

Just move on to the good plane: soar, rest and refill, then soar again, continue in a good cycle and into new dimensions and new phases.

Cast away unworthy thoughts and things and start new fresh chapter(s) daily, and remain grateful, helpful, useful and thankful.

Stay strong, nimble, agile and healthy in all five areas.

    Be blessed.

  50. Hi Steven @# 58

Since you are not profit driven, it’ll be nice to be able to cover costs, including cab fares to and fro, right? Towards this end, may I suggest you sell your recipe to people who are interested to have the recipe for a small sum (50C or $1 ) to help cover costs.

    My 2 cents’ worth.

  51. Steven @ # 58

Do you know how much has medical charges escalated?! A hospital stay is like a 6 star hotel stay along Orchard Road.

With $$$, you can, at least, afford to the best cures that money can buy. Without, you have no chance.

You think Big Brother will help to the end? They will stuff you with pain killers and hope that you come to the end quickly. They need the bed for the next paying customer.

  52. So stay healthy in all five integrated aspects and you need very very little medical care, KT.
