2nd SHC Flea Mart – Thur 1st May 2008

Hi everybody,

The last Flea mart attracted about 20 tables, along Bali Lane.  A few of the earlier vendors will be taking part in the 2nd Flea mart.  The date is Thur 1st May, from 3p.m to 8p.m.

SHC Flea Mart coordinator is Jasmmine Teo.  All SHC coordinations will be done via Jassmine, in collaboration with KT Wong.  There is also a large Flea mart event going on during the same period, and Bali Lane is expecting to attract huge crowds.

The cost per table is $10; and KT will look at how to lower the cost for SHC members.  There is massive publicity over this holiday and weekend.

If you would like to take part, please raise your hand.  Registration on this forum is strictly for SHC members only.   Any question, please pose it here; and JassmineT and/or KT Wong will answer you here.

Have fun, guys and gals.

Terence Seah/Jassmine Teo/KT Wong

I came to know about the SHC from eNN (Seng Kang). My interests are varied. I write on the forum regularly to improve my writing. In my autumn years, my priority is voluntary service. Hope to meet like-minded people and help initiate a programme/project for the disabled like the hearing impaired.

  1. Hi JassmineT,

This Post will be assigned to you. Feel free to edit the Post as you see fit. Have fun. This will be a great learning experience.

    Terence Seah

  2. Hi Jassmine

I have only a few items left to sell. If you are OK, will tonpang you.

    Cheers,

  3. Hi all,

Kt will give an overview of the main event planned on 1st May (by an event organiser) and explain the place of the SHC flea mart. He will also explain why the table rental for that day is $20/table.

After KT has posted, I’ll post again to provide details that have been left out and provide a clearer picture of SHC’s participation.

Hi AndrewK @# 2, please hold on till KT has posted, for my reply. May be you like the scenario painted so much you don’t want to tumpang anymore. LOL.

    JassmineT

  4. Hi Jass,

Just wonder, this FleaMart is for selling ‘Goods’ only, how abt ‘services’ eg. cooking class, photo taking, tuition etc etc…. (I better give eg, if not Tim will further elaborate for me… lolss)

    I noe my thinking is weird….have fun….hahaha

  5. Hi Jassmine

I have only a few items : a) some books and b) LDs to sell and share table rental cost.

During our first flea market, managed to sell some books, some LDs and souvenirs. Was surprised those books sold then were personally used ones with lot of reading marks.

Would like to soak in the festive ambience and reminisce of my childhood days this time.

Was brought up/played around N Bridge Rd, Kg Glam, beaches along Beach Road, playgrounds and the palace grounds during the 50s.

Like to move around and meeting with friends and some shop owners in the vicinity on Labour Day.

Still, will wait for your reply.

    Cheers,

  6. JaneW, you almost got me there by including “services’ leaving me out of a comment. But you still left out 1 thing to sell.

Heee, other than items & services, hv you not thot of selling Ideas? Money making ideas such as how to rob a bank?

(Yes, come closer, bend lower, that’s right & I shall now whisper into yr ears……find an axe, chankol, sharpen it and scour around raffles pl for a target, then walk in and shout “robbery!” This idea for you is free but when you sell it, it’s not hor. Collect the fees then we go pong chak pong)

An idea isnt a service bcos you teach that joker how to rob, you dont rob. Haha, imagine him walking stylo mylo with a chankol in a financial hub getting curious stares even as he wonders whether he has overpaid you for yr idea mooted by tim tim liu…………

  7. Hi Jane @# 4

Very creative ideas, leh. Let’s wait for KT’s post.

KT, where are you? Cepat post your response.

  8. Hi Mr Tim,

Yes, Ideas can be sold too, I think so , but what u said, is too chim for me hahaha, but I guess is more to a concept , a solution, a plan … dont noe what I am talking also…. :)

    Jane

  9. Hi Jasmine,

  10. Hi Jassmine/KT ,

    Btw,is it confirmed???

I like to join in for the 2nd. Flea market more out of FUN and gaining some experience in selling which I NEVER had a chance in my entire lifetime.

If confirmed , please keep 1/2 a table for me.

I won’t be selling any food items as I need a home licence to do that but selling other uneatable barang2.

Who would like to share with me the other half table ?

With other 1/2 table,Tim, you can offer your consultancy “services” with various brochures stack on the shared table.
    Ai mai?

Terence, you could have the other 1/2 of my table to sell your new batches of expired condms, pussy cat dolls, sweaty “lavender scented” male underwears-hot item in Tokyo, the epheromones guaranteed to attract the opp sx., ps enlarger for those still not satisfied with their natural size etc… LOL

Only main worry, KT if it pours heavily, where got shelter lah along bali lane -so open ???

Any large piece of plastic transparent sheets for us to cover our goods in case if it rains.

KT and Jassmine, I am really look forward to your confirmation of our 2nd. Flea market.

    I believe in action,not words.

    SC

  11. KT

You still haven’t tulis! Mana you pergi?

OK, I tulis first. You still must give an overview of the happenings in the vicinity of Bali Lane.

    We are waiting!

  12. Hey Jassmine,

With the kind of co-operation you are getting,I wish you the very best of luck in this endeavour. Believe me you need it. It will be like Dan banging his head on the wall……Jie

  13. Hi Steven, Catherine, other flea mart enthusiasts and everyone else in SHC,

Keep May 1st free for a rendezvous with fellow members at the 2nd SHC flea Mart at Bali Lane.

    For vendor wannabes, please note:

1(a). We have reserved 10 tables at $20/table on 1st May. If you want to sell on the next two days, please indicate in your posts so I can coordinate with the organisers. The table renal for the other days are $10/table/day.

(b). The table size is the same as those used in the 1st fl mart. (not very big, hor)

(c). Please note that table sharing is a private arrangement between the sharing parties. If you don’t know whom to share with, I will play match maker, but only one name will be listed and that name will make payment.

    2. Payment must be made asap (not later than 25 April) by bank transfer to an account I shall announce shortly.

3(a). If you are selling food, please indicate in your post so that the organisers can apply for clearance for you to sell food. No problems here. (Steven, you can sell your special desserts).

(b). The organisers can also prepare a dinner pack at your request at for you at $5/dinner pack. Please indicate if you want the dinner pack.

    4. Inclement weather. If it rains on flea mart day, all the tables will be moved to the five-foot-way outside the shop houses. The visitor number will definitely be affected, so let’s all pray for fine weather.

5 (a) To catch the lunch time crowd, I suggest the flea mart operate from 1pm. to 8p.m. However, you have the freedom to open your stall anytime you like, from 1p.m. to 8p.m.

(b). To overcome the scorching heat, I suggest we use caps/hats, esp sombreros or just carry umbrellas – what to do if we look weird. lol. (just hope it doesn’t rain instead!)

TQ. Please read the next post.

    JassmineT (Coordinator)

  14. Hi again,(following @# 13)

1(a) I have reserved the first two tables for Terence and Catherine. Are you selling food, Steven?

    (b) Steven and AndrewK, I’ll play match maker for you. If you have someone else in mind but feel shy about telling the whole world, just drop me an e-mail. lol

    2. Jie, one table for you?

    4. The other vendors from the 1st flea mart whose names have slipped my mind, cepat, cepat book your tables, hor.

    5. New vendor wannabes, also cepat book your tables, ya?

    6. Sharing a flea mart idea. Is there someone who has a mobile karaoke set? You can consider selling ‘opportunity to sing your fav song in any language’. Charge eg. $1 for the opportunity to sing one/two songs a ccapella ( w/o musical accompaniment, but you can improvise to keep time/rhythm – can dance also, if you like!)

    OK, folks, CEPAT COMMIT!

    JassmineT (Coordinator)

  15. Hi JassmineT, KT Wong #13 (1a),

The reservation of 10 tables at $20 each is confirmed by SHC. This is the minimum number. So, please go ahead with the planning with confidence.

    Terence Seah

  16. Hi JassmineT,

I had planned to come to the 2nd Flea Mart, but unfortunately, I have to go to Beijing during that week. My apology. Go ahead with all the fun.

Just spoke with KT, and I think the 2nd Flea mart would be a big success. KT would be writing a piece on the bigger Flea mart event soon.

    Terence Seah

  17. News in flash.

Apologies. The main flea market event is OFF. I have just been informed two minutes ago by the main area organiser.

    The website is here.
    http://www.rscblockparty.com

We are involved in the negotiations to try to resolve the issues. Hopefully, we can bring a bigger and better flea market event.

We can set our own timetable. We can still run the event if we want to. We are now not contrained to any date.

Terence, can you please let me know after tonight’s meeting if you wish to proceed irregardless of the main event.

I will encourage SHC to continue to build up the flea market initiative.

There are many advantages that we offer to a budding flea market entrepreneur.

    (a) You can start a business and test market products with ease and small outlay. You cannot find such a business opportunity anywhere.

    (b) We can arrange for a host of consignment products. Take advantage of this even if yuo have your own products. This will help to supplement your range and increase your potential revenues,

    (c) If you need help to man your stall, we can help to engage part-time workers.

    (d) You can sell F&B under our “homecooking” program. Usually, F&B is not allowed in flea markets.

    (e) Take advantage of the internet marketing and on-line listing. This has a auction component to help you sell limited edition items or expensive itmes as well as the more conventional fixed price retail items. You can continue selling outside the physical flea market event. In fact, once started you don’t have to stop selling.

    (f) We have both physical and virtual payments systems accepting all popular modes including NETS and credit/debit cards.

    (g) You can leverage on the group promotions and advertisements.

  18. SOS.

…We can set our own timetable. We can still run the event if we want to. Terence, can you please let me know after tonight’s meeting if you wish to proceed irregardless of the main event.

    Pls.let us know esp.the chosen date 1st.May.
    ON of OFF ?

Thanks. We are anxious to know as reflected by the SHCians comments below.

  19. KT @# 17

Wah, so dramatic! Ok we will have our own flea mart on 1st May and the rental per table will be $10, right (no need to make donations to event organisers anymore).

StevenC, you’ll have one table to yourself for the same price and so will AndrewK

Catherine will get two tables. Combine them for a bigger table space.

JaneW, how about your ‘service’ at the flea mart? One table for you?

TimL, I’m sure you can sell something? How about selling the essential bedroom accessories that Terence was going to sell before his Beijing assignment? Know where to source or not?

4 out of the 10 reserved tables have been taken up. Only 6 left. Those interested, cepat commit then start thinking of pricing your goods or service. Do price to sell, hor, otherwise regret when have to cart unsold goods home.

Now we must create our own entertainment on flea mart day. Any suggestionS?

    JassmineT

  20. Hi Jasmine,

Wah, so good! Pls. reserve one table for me quickly. I like to sell Home Microbrewery System at a special price for SHC members. Normal retail price is $167.0 but members it is only $50.0 per system and limited to 12 system only. It contains everything one need to start brewing fresh beer Today! It’s Fun, Simple and Economical.

    Capt. Sri (94234640)

  21. Hi Kaushal (Capt Sri?)

How interesting. Was thinking you could sell the beer you brew after a live demonstration. Then we will also get to know the quality of the beer brewed from this kit. Yes, one table is reserved for you.

Please visit the forum frequently for updates. TKS.

    JassmineT

  22. Hi Jassmine

As mentioned at#5, am not keen to have a table this time.

Would tonpang you or someone who care to display, market and sell the items mentioned at #5. Will share cost of table rental and profit sharing. Any taker?

    Cheers,

  23. Captain Beer @ #20

This is really exciting. We can now have the original home brew.

Scorebot is a fully licensed liquor outlet. We can serve the original home brew for the special occassion and we can buy the kit home to make our own.

Can we also have some of that spicy beer complements for our servings that you prepared the last time we were at your place. Scorebot has their own chicken wings and nuts/crackers but I love your home cook and home brew.

  24. Hi KT,

SHC will confirm a minimum of 10 tables at $10 each. The date as agreed with JassmineT is on. JassmineT will decide if other dates are required and anything else needed for the 2nd SHC Flea Mart.

I encourage all SHC members who are in Singapore, to look at items or service which you can sell. Have Fun.

    Terence Seah

  25. Jass @#19, bedroom needs “essential accessories” one meh? For me, I am down-to-earth honest, show everything and doesnt need any tools or accessories less than natural.

Capt, miss yr home-brewed beer which isnt gassy. Nice if you can sell some of yr beer there (provided no hassle of getting a permit).

Good if Scorebot will underwrite to buy all unsold brew sets……frankly, I’d prefer drinking not those bottled Tiger or Doggy tongue but home-brewed HarHar beer that brings on the hahaha……..

  26. Steven @# 23

The table size: 4ft by 2ft. ( measurement obtained from 1st flea mart. post). Are you selling food?

    AndrewK @# 22

Hope someone is interested in your proposition – display, market, sell.

  27. TimL @# 26

“…doesn’t need any tools or accessories…” Well, if you say so. What’s your secret to virility and vitality after 45? Can consider selling your recipe orally (prevent photocopies)at the flea mart…ai mai?

Come on, give ‘vendoring’ a try – only $10 for a once-in-a-lifetime experience…unless you get hooked!

  28. KT

What is the a/c vendors make payment to? Hung3 fai ti lah, wei! (Canto). The deadline 25/4 is just round the corner!

BTW, what’s to stop you from taking a table? Nothing, right? So you will take a table and sell….what?

  29. Precisely, Jass, but one doesnt need a 4 by 2 table to sell ideas, standing next to the Scorebot tree will do. What do you want me to do with a rented table which I will hv to stand guard for half a day, paying $10 to be its guard lest it’s broken into pieces for firewood?

Seriously, I’ll be there to make some purchases & lend support as before but I cant be buying from every vendor hor.

  30. Hi all

The list of vendors participating in the 2nd flea mart on 1St May is out. Please make payment when the a/c is given.

As there is no more lunch-time crowd to attract, I think we can start the flea mart at 3p.m. What say you?

Perhaps we could make it a family day at the flea mart. Bring your children, other relatives ..besides friends to socialise/bond there.

For entertainment, I’ll arrange for some music and evergreen oldies to be played from a CD/cassette player. They would surely send you down memory lane! You can also DANCE, DANCE, DANCE if your feet start to itch.

Any other ideas/contributions are most appreciated.

Finally, is there someone interested in operating a ‘singing’ stall? If not, I might do it myself if I can get the equipment so there’ll also be opportunities to SING! SING!, SING!

    JassmineT (Coordinator)

  31. Tim @# 30

How can you dish out secret recipes/advice of that nature standing under a Scorebot tree!. You won’t have any credibility at all!

Impression is most important. You must SIT at a table on which you place some books ..and whatever accessories to create a positive image.

Come on, pay $10 for this new experience.

  32. “How can you dish out secret recipes/advice of that nature standing under a Scorebot tree…..”

Alright, I’ll climb up the Scorebot tree, hang the rubbers and dangle the joysticks from there as i share my mantra, even pronounce men & wife amongst SHCians from that vantage point so still dont need a table.

Heee, but if you really want me to rent a table, no sweat but you hv to keep watch over it cos if it’s stolen/damaged, the cost can me $10 x 10 hor.

Frankly, tables may not sell as fast this time with the novelty wearing thin.

  33. Hi Tim @# 33

One table reserved for you. What do you intend to sell? How about charging a small fee to teach …betting? Do you want to sell ‘opportunities to sing’?

As it’s going to be a family day too, bring your daughter along. It’s not too early for her to start learning how to run a ‘business’ It’ll definitely help her in her composition writing.

    JassmineT

  34. Hi Lina

You can sell your popular yam cake. You will get the clearance to sell. Remember there’ll be tourists passing by too. Let them have a taste of local cuisine.

Come on,give it a try. Mobilise your buddies for support if you have cold feet. lol

    *All Mandarin class learners:

I forgot to mention something I think will interest you with regard to learning chinese. It’s also related to the flea mart (surprise?), that’s why I use this thread.

    Pl read the next comment.

  35. Hi all Chinese appreciation class learners (re.# 38)

Some of you may have known already that I intend to take the HSK conducted Business Chinese Test (BCT)in June.

This is actually a diagnostic (or placement) test(nothing to prepare; no need to study!)From the result(s) of the test(s) (doesn’t matter even if your score is zero), they will conduct courses at your level of entry. WONDERFUL, right?

The courses for Business Chinese (don’t be put off by ‘business’ -it’s not what you think, hor) conducted by HSK are heavily subsidised, so we can expect the fee(s) to be relatively low – something like $120 (if I didn’t hear wrongly)for three months!

Now here’s how this chinese language learning is related to the flea mart on 1st May:

Come to the flea mart and I will show you the application form for the BCT and answer ALL your questions about the BCT and the CB courses. lol.

..can apply for the BCT on your behalf because I’ll be submitting my own application end of May for the test in June.

…can also arrange a visit to the HSK centre, end of May .

OK, come to the flea mart and ask questions, ya?

    JassmineT

  36. KT

    You take one table, ya?

Could you ‘station’ your boys at strategic points, like both ends of Bali lane, Haji Lane…to spread the word about the existence of the flea mart on 1st May?

Also remind them to mention to the regulars in Kg Glam area about the event on 1st May during their and your gossip sessions.

OK, are you going to sell food – porky’s trotters in ginger? chicken claws or …durians?

  37. Hi Jassmine,

I am definitely visiting the 2nd flea market on 1st May to give support to all vendors. If you set up the singing stall, I will be happy to contribute a song.

    Bernie

  38. Jas @ # 37

Ah, the sacrifice for the people…

I have to take care of many things. Too busy to tend to a table. The big picture. And making sure that the half empty jug of beer becomes half full.

  39. KT @39

    You sacrifice meh?

You said you are too busy to tend a table – no worry, I’ll tend it for you. I’m responsible for TimL’s table – one more wouldn’t make a difference to me. So one table for you.

    Hey, where’s the a/c no.?

  40. Hi Bernadette @# 38

Yes, come – on your own, with friends, family members …and SING!

Can you sing in dialect? Songs in languages other than English and Chinese? I’m thinking of the tourists passing by – it’ll be a pleasant ‘cultural’ experience for them.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

    JassmineT

  41. KT @# 39

    (addendum)

Could you bring your portable cassette -cum- cd player to the Flea mart? I’ll get the batteries. This will save me the hassle of lugging this equipment. Now I’ll agree this will be a small sacrifice.

Can or not? Cepat answer. TKS.

  42. Hi Jassmine

I think you might need a Public Performance permit from COMPASS. Do google and find out more.

    Joy

  43. Hi Joy @# 43

Thanks for your concern. The idea of having to apply for a permit did not occur to me at all. I think if busking is exempted, my ‘singing’ stall should not be a problem, but I’ll find out more. May be got to inform the Neighbourhood police.

Hope you come and sing or listen to oldies if we are allowed to set up this kind of entertainment at the flea mart.

    Tks again.

    JassmineT

  44. Hi KT

    Re. @# 43, 44.

Is there a problem if I want to play music from a cd/cassette player or set up a ‘singing’ stall?

    JassmineT

  45. Dear SHC Members,

Nice to know, some of you still remember Home Brewed Beer! Unfortunately, it is not allowed to be sold. What I can do is to organise a small party of about 20+ members and have freshly brewed All Malt Beer with Home Made Chiken Biryani with Rayta (Curd based side dish). I will confirm the date later under ‘Event’.

  46. Thanks, Jasmin. See you all on May 1. Kaushal is my first but I am better known as Capt. Sri.

  47. Hi Kaushal @# 46

You can have your party at the Flea mart. I’ll have your pre-cooked food (sounds so delicious!)as dinner. The organisers will clear you to sell your F&B. But it looks like you’re not selling your F&B. Do hold your party at the Flea mart.

Perhaps those interested in sampling your F&B can make a small contribution which will go towards defraying the rental of TWO/THREE tables!….just a pragmatic suggestion.

    Jassmine

  48. Jas,

If you intend to burst out in spontaneous song at your table, there’s no problem. Try to bring your own portable karaoke system. The ones with keys and all.

No point singing inside for an outside audience. No one will believe its not a recorded piece anyway. So either you are “on stage” or we might as well play recorded pieces.

As I said before you can use the AV equipment as is. If your table is right outside Scorebot then you will have max reach both inside and out.

  49. Captain Beer @ 47; Jas @ #48

Exactly. My thoughts completely. We’ll host a catered party for SHC. The second of a new bimonthly SHC meet which is in conjunction with the SHC flea market.

Suggestion. We’ll do as we did in previous booz up private parties. SHC will charge one price for all food and drinks in a normal SHC “pot-luck party” for those members not bringing food. The only difference is that the venue and time is at Scorebot on its flea market day.

Until the barrel runs dry or until the last man has fallen. If the cock crows before the last cup empties, we’ll fry the chicken. Scorebot will charge the private party corkage of $1. Simple.

Now that will be something to really look forward to.

    Captain Beer. Are you game?

  50. Hi Jass,

We’ll like to participate in the flea mart on 1st May, please allot us a table each.
If the ‘pot-luck’party is confirmed, we will contribute an item, ie greenbean with durian dessert.

    Cheers
    Anna Seet / Ann Lim

  51. Hi Jassmine,

Sorry. I can sing English and Mandarin songs effectively. However, I can sing simple Cantonese songs. BUT I can’t sing in other languages if you mean Thai, Jap, French or German, Malay or Indian ??

Hope that your singing stall can be set up and if you need help in running it, just let me know.

    Thanks, Bernie

  52. Hi Anna and Ann @# 51

Thanks, ladies for your participation. Are you selling costume jewellery again? I remember, at the 1st flea mart, your stalls attracted a lot of interest.

Ok, see you on 1st May 3 p.m.

    Jassmine

  53. Bernie @# 52

    Hi Bernie

Why not you get a table and sell something? In-between selling, we can sing songs. Good idea?

    Jassmine

  54. Anna & Ann @# 53

    (addendum)

There’s no pot luck party, but bring your greenbean and durian dessert to the flea mart to sell. This is a delicious dessert.

    Jassmine

  55. KT @# 50

My idea of Captain Sri’s beer party is an outdoor one (not in Scorebot). This means he may have to rent two or three tables to spread out the F & B including the beer-brewing kit.

You can have the indoor beer party on another occasion.

    Hi Captain Sri

Bring your food and beer besides the brewing equipment to the flea mart on 1st. May, 3p.m. I’m sure we won’t mind making a small cash contribution to sample your delicious food and beer and this contribution will go to pay the rental of two/three tables.

So do you want to rent another one or two tables?

    Jassmine

  56. Hi Tim,

I suggest you get yrself a table to sell the $3 MahuBurrow cigarettes from Geylang Rd ( Cost Price )and sell them at $8 each making a profit of 266% per pack.

Or why not join hands with Terence to sell “vibrators” or pussy willows. Ai mai?

  57. Hi Jas, Ann Lim, Anna Seet,

Thank you for your support. The SHC Flea mart is gathering interest, and I wish you success. Mind you, all of us are learning with Jassmine, how to make Flea Mart a success for SHC. As you were the initial vendors, other members are also looking how a crazy bunch of SHCians can make Flea mart different and yet able to make a meaningful idea into a SilverHairsClub culture.

Jie started the 1st SHC Flea Mart, and that was an absolute success too. We now need to work the next step.

Hi CatherineC, StevenC, Kaushal, have fun, and I wish you all success too.

And KT, thank you for supporting the Flea Mart with all your crazy ideas and suggestions. JassmineT is our coordinator, and she represents all SHC’s interests.

  58. Hi Mary Chan,

Influence by the “humsup” postings and following the footsteps of my Tai Loh Tim Kor after a trip to “Gayland” or is it the D.O.M tour to “Wonderland” LOL.

  59. Hi Steven Chan,

Don’t mention where you intend ro buy the Mahuburrow cigarettes from! I am sure you don’t want the police to knock on Tim’s and your doors!

    Hi Jasmine,

Do I need a permit or a table for selling ice-cream at the flea mart.

    Danz

  60. Hi Danz at # 61,

It was meant as a joke. And I myself is anti-smoking campaigner.

My dad ( active smoker )died from lung cancer since he has quit smoking for 20 yrs but alas too late all the tar and carcinogens had infected his lungs .

My mum ( a passive smoker ) a poor victim who has to inhale my dad’s smoke has died of lymphatic cancer , so painful that the doctor has to inject morphine into her body to desensitize the pain.

And to those who are addicted to smoking, I know it is not easy to quit but with strong determination you can overcome it.

Think in terms of saving lots of $$$ and feel healthy too. 1 packet of Marlboro cigarettes is now priced at $10 or above.

Within a yr,I estimated you can save 1000s of $$$. Right?

Better not talk too much otherwise all the smokers will boomerang me with all the f@%&*^%ku remarks.

  61. Hi Danz,

    ..selling ice-cream. Excellent idea.

You had potential customers with “sweet tongues” like, Lina,Ah Nee,Dolly, Carly G, Gingko,Veronique,Susan Nor ,myself etc.who crave for your yummy ice cream.

    Hi KT,
If say KT applies food licence for us,do we need to pay a share for the licence or does KT applies for us in good faith?

Btw,KT how much is the food licence, pls. enlightened us interested food vendors if we had to pay a share.

    Thanks,
    SC

  62. Jas @ #56

All those who wish to have F&B MUST contact us directly. Serving al fresco style or outdoors is OK. It has to and seen to come through Scorebot.

  63. Hi Danz,

…Steven Chan,Don’t mention where you intend ro buy the Mahuburrow cigarettes from!

There is no such cigarette brand Mahuburrow. It was more as a tongue in cheek. Had no fear Tim, police will not come knocking at your doors. They are too busy hunting for Mas Selamat.

Btw, the HOT news is on Mas S and how he manage to escape in today’s NST as reveal by a panel of judges.

It is high time that we need to know too how a No:1 terrorist like MAS can sneak out of the prison toilet.

    SC

  64. Hi KT,pls reply the posted comments below.

…Hi KT, If say KT applies food licence for us,do we need to pay a share for the licence or does KT applies for us in good faith?

  65. Steven,

There is no additional F&B costs. Other considerations – ops and logistics apply. Talk to us. Perphaps Jas can organize a meet up.

  66. Steven/Dan,
No permit is needed if these tables are closer to where Scorebot sin they oredi had F&B licence lor but how much Scorebot charge is ??? lor…

Dan, selling i-cream mit a good idea unless u intend 2 invest heavily on dry i to prevent melting of the i-cream esp on the vry hot day. Moreover, if u intend to sell 1 box/1 tub types, customers mit not b attracted 2 buy cos 2 troublesome.

  67. Hi DanH @# 61

A great idea selling ice cream. Even on cold day people eat ice-cream, so rain or shine, you have a ‘foolproof’ business!

You need to rent a space to sell your ice-cream, so one table (space) for you. Hope your ice-cream includes ice-cream burger – ice cream ‘kiapped’ between bread. Yummy!

    Jassmine

  68. KT @# 64 & 67

    KT

I will meet you on behalf of all the vendors selling F&B. There should NOT be any charges levied on them for the ‘permission’ to sell F&B for THAT was NOT made clear to me when we discussed the selling of F&B.

What information from the ‘vendors do you need? Eg i/c no? I’ll get all their info ready and submit to Scorebot when I meet you to pay the table rental.

@# 67 – What are the ‘other considerations..and logistics” that apply?

    JassmineT (Coordinator)

  69. Hi Potential Food Vendors

Perhaps its best 2 wk 2gether wif ScoreBot on a profit-sharing basis. Win win 4 both.

  70. Hi all,

1 imported GENUINE crocodile skin hand-held business VIP pouch for cheque book, credit cards , ATM and VIP cards. Very New condition.

    U.P. $300+
    Flea price: $88.

Hurry be the first to come to view and also a range of assorted foreign souvenirs and accessories.

Busy marketing and pasting my price tags for this exciting event of my lifetime selling goods.

    SC

  71. Jass @#34, “One table reserved for you. What do you intend to sell?

Well, alright I’ll take 1 table for $10 and will pay @12 when i see you on 010508. You can use it to rest yr barangs or put yr singing equipment, no sweat. Otherwise, you can print a foto of me fr the archive, set up and altar in memory of tim tim liu….anythg can as offerings -bananas, papayas, joss sticks, amulets – I hv no religion preference. No sweat too. But if it’s not to be used at all, then suggest you place it at the end so that it wont look like a “closed-shop” unsightly to buyers thus affecting other vendors’ bizes.

Betting depends on intuition/hunch, cant be taught. But looking at you, think you hv Lady’s Luck for the rest of the year.

Tks for offering to teach my kid composition but think she’s quite precocious for that & is quite there already. Heee, was ssurprised with her “..pity the serenity devoid of divinity….”

There wont be any corkage for KT to charge. I’ll take my cock in a cage to scorebot, release the cock and put KT in the cage until all bottles are opened.

Steven, mind supplying me with yr $3 mulberry cigarretes? You seem to hv a mulberry farm somewhere making those cheap cheap cigarettes but if you cant supply, trust that I’ll multi-bury you under cigars & rats……………….

  72. Hi all 2nd flea mart vendors

I’ve posted the account number at the lead post for you to make payment. I’ll repeat the a/c here. POSB, savings account 091-01377-0

I’ll reflect the payment status on Sat 26th April. Thanks for your patience – we’re almost at the home stretch now. You can start getting your barang2/food or both ready.

The flea mart will operate from 3p.m. to 8p.m.

Wishing us all the best, right?

    JassmineT

  73. Hi TIM # 73

I believe your daughter heard you mumble ‘..pity the serenity devoid of divinity’ in your sleep and used it in her composition.

Your 5th para (abt corkage), there’s a possibility your precocious daughter may accidentally read this para. and come running to you for the meaning (she wants to use some of the vivid phrases in her next composition). lol

For your table -you want to set up an altar just for a few hours? Can’t get much donation lah. Really impressed you’re not superstitious – tian bu2 pa4, ti bu pa, zhi3 pa you3 qing2 ren2…your type, right.

Why do you want to pay a premium for the table rental when it’s $10? The a/c no. for payment has been given; use it, hor.

Do also consider subletting your table to a vendor wannabe..or use it as a gossip table!

    Jassmine

  74. Jass @ #75, seems like you’re a believer of many things, the latest being that I had mumbled in my sleep and she heard it (Heee, more likely you get to hear my mumblings than she wd, she not sleeping with me). The truth is quite different tho.

The ‘..pity the serenity devoid of divinity’ was in the context of refugees in a land they thot was haven but were persecuted & bullied…………

If she comes running to me at Scorebot, it’s bcos she wants to charge KT for the duration of his stay in the cage which is home to her pet.

Whatever donation you cant get out of my altar, please donate it to Scorebot as seed $ for its fidelity fund, and yes, I aint superstitious here as it’s good to hv a contingency fall-back.

With so many pa in yr “tian bu2 pa4, ti bu pa, zhi3 pa you3 qing2 ren2…” some in SHC are sure to think that you’re looking for some kind of a papa and so audition for it.

Well, what Jass says is really this : he isnt afraid of Heaven or Earth but does hv a soft spot for the sentimental………”

    You do know me.

It’s interest over the next 9 days, not a premium. Whoever wants to use my rented table, please do. The user(s) need pay nothing – no commission, no % from sales. Frankly, I wd be delighted that it’s used I’ll drop by later, abt 6 p.m. when it’s cooler and do the sales call for you. Also free.

  75. Hi Jassmine/KT,

Can we bring along extension plugs to tap electricity from Score bots?

Esp. in the afternoon damn HOT, thought of bringing along a very small table 8″ in diameter, fan for comfort. OK???

    Pls. reply ASAP.
    Thanks.

  76. Hi Steven @# 77

No,cannot do that. Use batteries instead. How about the ‘pang2 hoon’ (prickly heat powder) to keep cool?

Use a wide-brimmed hat. Stand under a leafy tree if there’s no customer at your stall…
let me think of other ways to ‘beat’ the heat.

    Jassmine

  77. Hi TimL @# 76

You also believe what I wrote, right? “Touche” you say?

Ok, will use your bare table for my equipment.
If the heat is keeping you away, use the “pang2 hoon”. Looks like i need to buy a can and place it on your table for all heat-wilting souls to use. lol

    And there’s ice-cream too.

  78. “Touche”, no. “Touch me”, yes. You hv touched me and I am touched but aint complaining.

Seriously, I told a fellow SHCian who called that she should feel free to use it for her sales………..leaving it to Dennis the Har Har to sit on top & whilstle at passing gals is an option but not the best.

I may do some fortune reading there when I drop by later and only if it’s not used……..

  79. Tim @# 80

I hope your shen2 mi4 nu3 lang2 (mystery lady) will let me know if she’s definitely selling so table won’t have the ‘closed shop’ look as you rightly pointed out. Otherwise it’ll most likely be placed at a central position for optimal reach of music and songs from a player.

Won’t it be too dark to read…cards? palms? etc at 6p.m. So don’t forget your lantern!

    JassmineT

  80. Sure, Jass, I shall check with her closer to the date; right now my gut feel is she’s serious with using the table to sell books. Haha, not shen2 mi4 but just according her due privacy for now.

The tim brand of fortune-telling needs only a torch, shining the person from under her chin……..eerie, yes but one gets the truth from the twilight.

  81. Hi Jassmine,

    Re : @ 54,

Since I have nothing to sell, I am not interested in renting a table. However, I am definitely coming down to enjoy the music and food.

    Thanks

    Bernie

  82. Steven @# 84

Appreciate your swift action. Have noted the ref no. but will confirm on Sat 26 when I go to the bank or ATM.

So we have no chance to taste your delicious dessert. Looks like we have only ice cream to eat. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Lina or Caroline will sell some food.

    Jassmine

  83. Bernie @# 83

Hope you sing a Cantonese no. besides Mandarin and English songs. See u there on 1st May 3p.m.

    Jassmine

  84. Hi Jassmine,

I thought we need food licence for clearance to sell food to the public.

    Pls. enlightened me.
    Thanks

    SC

  85. Hi Jassmine,

I am still negotiating on the supply of ice-creams! Will confirm with u in two days time.

Have not done it before, but willing to try!

    Danz

  86. Hi Steven @# 87

There is no more issue about whether we can sell food at the flea mart. The answer is yes. However, there is a concern about whether the organisers will charge vendors for giving them permission (not permit/licence)to sell at their premises.

(I’m still waiting for KT to clarify – mana dia pergi?)

So will you sell your desserts? Make some, lah.

  87. Hi KT,

..However, there is a concern about whether the organisers will charge vendors for giving them permission (not permit/licence)to sell at their premises.

…(I’m still waiting for KT to clarify – mana dia pergi?)

    Pls. clarify.
    Thanks
    SC

  88. Hi DanH @# 88

Regardless of the outcome, you’ll be richer for the experience. But I hope you get the ice cream consignment – hey, do include the ice cream burgers.

    Jassmine

  89. Hi Jassmine,

Thanks for the support! Certainly the burger or wholemeal bread will be included. I will also consider home delivery if the demand is there!

Look out for ‘Jams n Kaya session soon’!

    Danz

  90. (a) Account for crediting.
    Scorebot Pte Ltd, UOB, 383-300-7376
Confirm with Jasmine once you paid or note it in this thread.

    (b) Steven @ #77 – Jas/Terence has decided not to wire up this time. It costs less than $1,000 one time and most of the fixed assets can be reused like wires, connectors and poles for hanging wire. Next time.

Bring a hand fan, or better still perphaps set up stall to sell them. The handpainted ones are beautiful. Or battery operated ones. Big market if hot sun. Set up another table to sell umbrellas and raincoats. We have it all covered.

    (c) F&B – Jas/Steven – Have the vendor meeting asap. F&B details cannot be worked out on this forum. Time is short. Go direct. I don’t have to be in the loop. For direct co-ordination and meeting, contact Marcus at Scorebot h/p.

Marcus and his team are F&B and logistics professionals. He has handled huge projects from total logistics in large fast food franchises to the current Beijing Olympics. So you are in very good hands. But please do not delay.

  91. Hi Wong KT at # 93,

I am not into huge projects mass selling of desserts.

I am just testing the market with a few samples for sales that appeals to the SHC / public.

No need to talk of logistics. OK?

  92. KT @# 93

    1. Check (the lead post) before posting your a/c no. I’ve already posted my a/c.no.

(vendors who make payment to the UOB a/c, let me know, k?)

    2. I called Marcus twice this morning but he seemed uncontactable. I then msged him and am still waiting for his reply. Could you alert him to my call/msg?

    3. There’s no logistics involved in the selling of food at the flea mart. It will be sold on the tables already reserved. We keep it small and simple.

I feel a molehill is becoming a mountain!

    JassmineT

  93. Hi DanH @# 92

Wow! you have a lobang. For home delivery (like pizza?)I suppose you need a minimum amount. Will you be riding a scooter? lol.

What’s the ‘jam & kaya’ session? ice-cream feast? Don’t think it’ll be popular with weight conscious members.

    Jassmine

  94. Hi DanH

Will you consider selling things/service if there’s problem selling ice cream? Please consider alternatives to ice cream cos I worry molehill becomes mountain where selling food is concerned. TKS.

  95. Hi Danz,

Why not sell dancing /ballet shoes for the guys/gals who attend your regular dancing class if no yummy ice cream for sale is allowed.

  96. Hi Jassmine,

Okay, I can still fall back on costume jewellery n tupperware n my collection of books. No need to scoot aroound, can drive!

You heard of ‘Jams n Butter’. Look out for ‘Jams n Kaya’.

    Danz

  97. Hi Wong KT,

Sorry for the late response. I will try to best to make the occasion a memorable one. Once closer to date, I will confirm what I plan to do on May 1. Hope, I am not too busy a day b4 May 1.

  98. Hi DanH @# 99

Costume jewellery! Tupperware! I least expect you to sell these things! Will you be using a portable mic in your demo/explanation of Tupperware uses?

I hope we have the opportunity of selling from our car boot. If we park at an HDB carpark, for say 6 hrs, we need pay only $6…hmm worth a thought.

    JassmineT

  99. Hi Jassmine,

I am doing it just for the fun of it! I get costume jeweleries n Tupperware from friends on consignment.

As for ‘Fruits in ice-cream’ I am testing whether it can be a worhwhile investments!

Having to do it in HDB estate from car boot? Not sure, unless I can afford the time.

    Danz

  100. Hi DanH @# 102

Ya, doing a little of this and a little of that is interesting and educational. The experience accumulated will stand one in good stead when a good opportunity comes a-knocking.

The car boot sale idea is also on ad hoc basis, like the flea mart.

You seem to be very enterprising and know a lot of lobang. Do you know of a shop/place (preferably in Toa Payoh) where I can place on consignment or sell good, used clothes, etc to the not-so-rich? I hope to raise funds for an organisation to help the poor and needy. This is a project that interests me.

    Jassmine

  101. Hi Jassmine,

Will keep a lookout for you to sell your ware. Can you give me an idea of the size and budget that you are comfortable with.

  102. Jassmine @ 103

Perhaps u can gv more details on ur charitable project as there r guidelines governing raising funds 4 orgn. U may oso coordinate it as SHC’s activity 2.

  103. Hi DanH @# 104 & YK @# 105

My idea of selling is simple and doesn’t entail budget, official guidelines… it depends more on the ‘goodwill’ of the tenant/lessee/owner…of the shop/space.

    Let me give an illustration:

There is a 2nd hand airpot (Takada – 3litres) that we want to sell for ,say $6. Cash converter will not buy from us for $6. They may perhaps give us $2 and sell in their shop for $10.

Now if there’s a shop willing to let us leave the airpot there , we’ll let the seller know that we want to sell the airpot for $6. He sells it at $9. He keeps the difference.

Alternatively, we rent a space outside the shop for $20-$30 for several hours, and we bring our goods there to sell (like in a flea mart). We can do this once/twice a month.

So as you can see, it really is a simple win-win situation for both us and the seller, but we don’t have such contacts…may be one day ..

    JassmineT

  104. “2nd hand airport (Takada – 3litres) that we want to sell for, say $6”. First world airport we hv one at changi but a 2nd hand one at Takada not Jakarta which is measured in litres & goes for $6, heeee, like to place a firm order now.

Of cos it was a typo as, reading further down yr posting, confirms it but still thanks for the laugh…………

Seriously, arithmatically it goes that way you hv put it but realistically, that kind of obliging & generous shop-owner is hard to find. But I do like what motivates you – a desire to do charity.

  105. Hi Tim @# 107

Heng ah, I’ve got edit function. But that makes your reference…meaningless. Want me to delete it?

Ya, it’s difficult to find a shop owner who’s interested in such an arrangement, but if the shop owner is a relative, friend or is himself/herself involved in the project, than it’s more than possible, right?

We just have to be patient.

    JassmineT

  106. Tolong x 2, dont delete hor otherwise I kena made to look silly & incredible like having a window without grilles or a mouth without teeth.

Wrong. The answer can only be correct if that person too has a heart of benevolence, and that kind of heart is usually found with people living in huts………the humble kampong folks, quite unlike the urbane type who bets $thousands on F1 but will hv no hesitation to f when approached to do charity………….

But you said it, we will hv to be patient and we will, even if it means waiting for the cow to come home.

  107. Dear Jas and Steven

I can only advice on F&B. If you don’t make suitable arrangements with a licensed outlet then you’re on your own.

The authorities is vigilant on F&B in ordinary times. Now that we hav dengue and foot & mouth desease, things are even moreso by the book.

  108. Hi KT @# 110

No one will be selling food. But there’ll be songs and music from a portable cassette/cd player, placed on a reserved table. Hope this is ok with regards to copyright music and songs. There might be ‘spontaneous’ singing when the mood turns nostalgic!

    *Hi Steven and Dan H

Do not sell any foodstuff, hor.

    JassmineT

  109. Hi Jassmine,

How come no ice-cream? I am committed to the buy the ice-cream and to rent a freezer!

  110. Hi DanH

If you cannot reject the ice cream and freezer, all is not lost. The problem is all food has to be sold inside Scorebot and the vendor will have to meet the F&B person of Scorebot (Marcus).

Would you have the time to go and see him? You can try and see if you could place the freezer just outside the shop. His contact: 96808359.

I can go with you to see him tomorrow afternoon (Fri) about 4.30p.m. Do let me know asap. My contact: 94518601.

  111. Hi Jassmine,

  115. Hi JassmineT, and other Flea mart vendors,

There is a fair bit of organisation and thinking work to make the Flea mart successful. I have to apologise I cannot participate, but for those coming, enjoy the May day Flea mart.

For those planning to sell F&B items, and cannot do so this coming event, let’s try again in the future. This is something we have to work with the venue owner.

JassmineT, thank you for the effort. I will see you in 4 wks time.

    Terence Seah

  116. Hi Steven @# 115

Wow! You can be heard a mile away!. Tks. for your enthusiasm. May be if you sell your desserts, more would come. Anyway we could get ice cream. Keep our fingers crossed.

    JassmineT

  117. Hi CatherineC @# 117

    Noted your payment.

The table is not very big and two table space is , in my opinion, just nice to spread out our barang2 in an attractive way.
If you are getting rid of things, price them at rock bottom price and they ‘ll be sold in a jiffy.

    See u on 1st May – 3p.m.

    JassmineT

  118. Hi Terence

Ya lah. Will miss seeing your wares more than you. lol

We ‘re all raring to go!

  119. Hi KT

As agreed, by today (Friday 25th ),I confirm the number of tables. I confirm 9 tables and will transfer the rentals paid to my a/c to your UOB a/c most probably by tomorrow.

Could stools be provided like at the first flea Mart? Tks.

    JassmineT

  120. Jas,

Terence specifically said no to chairs the first time. So the option was not inluded. We have several chairs which you can use.

  121. Hi Jasmine

I would like to take some photographs of the event on 1st May. Is it O.K.

If yes, can someone teach me how to:
    orgaise the photos into an albm form;
    upload to our website; and
    create the link.

By the way do the photos need to be QC by anybody before they can be uploaded?

    Regards

    King Seng

  122. Hi KingSeng,
Anyone can take photographs for any SHC events/activities. But upload these fotos will be handled by Terence himself. All u hv 2 do either pass him d SD card or email him test fotos and he will do the rest.

    Cheers… Dolly

  123. Hi KingSeng #20,

As Dolly said, for monthly events, if you are a photographer, you can email me the digital pixs. I shall then arrange to have them uploaded. QC?, not really, if they look good, we can publish them.

By the way, I luv closeups of individuals. They are quite fun.

    Terence Seah

  124. Hi Flea Mart vendors

Please refer to the lead post for your payment status. To date, CatherineC, StevenC and JassT have paid.

Those of you who have yet to make payment, please pay to Scorebot Pte. Ltd. UOB 383-300-7376 asap, hor.

    JassmineT

  126. Hi Terence & Jasmine;

I will try to take as many pictures ahowing different tables and SHC members in action as possible.

  128. Hi Jassmine,

I love to cook, brew and have party. I will try to organise one on May 1, if I have some time tp spare.

  129. Hi Captain Sri @ 137

Food has to be sold inside Scorebot( a kind of pub). If you are ok with that , than contact their F&B person called Marcus (96808359). I think you need to meet him personally. Do let me know if my help is needed. (Please refer to comment 113.)

As time is running out, you’ll have to hurry settle the food problem. I really hope we can have a party outdoors. If you sell indoors (in Scorebot), I’ll buy your food for dinner and have a taste of your home-brewed beer,

Ok, let me know your progress. Tks.

I didn’t know we have late birds. If you are definite about taking a table each, I’ll try to reserve another two tables with KT. (We have actually closed the booking of tables).

*Karen, I should think it’s alright to have a non-SHC member as helper.

Ok – I’ll write to KT now.

    JassmineT (Coordinator)

  131. Hi KT

Is it possible to reserve another two tables (making it a total of 11 tables)?

    Jassmine

  132. JassmineT

Reserved a table for me. Please confirm so that I can transfer the $10 or Can i pay on the actual Day. Thanks

    karen

  134. Hi Jass/KT

Transferred payment $10/- to Scorebot UOB a/c,
    Ref: 392, time: 1846hrs today.

    Regards,
    Ann Lim

  135. Hi Jassmine,

Is it true that those involve in serving foods need to go for a typhoid injection!

    Danz

  136. Hi Jassmine Teo / Ann Lim,

Would you like to join us for bbq buffet next Sat.
Pls register. 1 more vacancy left.

    SC

  137. Hi DanH @# 142

I think the typhoid jab is compulsory for hawkers and food handlers who work full time ‘handling food’.

    JassmineT

  138. Hi Steven @# 143

Tks for the invite. I have an engagement this Sat so am unable to join you. Another time, perhaps.

  139. Anyone who needs a table can take over the one marked in my name but if not, I’ll pay $12 (cost + $2 interest) only on 1 May 2008……..not that I am any special but just that I fumble with e-$ transfer and so has added interest for the late payment.

I hv nothing to sell at my table…….maybe will use it to tell some fortune but wont mince my words if there’s only misfortune to tell.

  140. Hi Karen @# 149

Hv e-mailed KT. The man seems to be very busy and has not replied. Hope we can get the answer by tomorrow.

    Jassmine

  141. Tim @# 147

Spend the $2 ‘interest’ at my stall. I have a 500-piece jigsaw puzzle of two koala bears. Product is from Australia. It is unopened and I’m selling it for $3. I’m sure your daughter would like it.

    Jassmine

  142. Hi Karen, Amy Kor (+partner)

Both of you get a table each. It’s confirmed. Now we have eleven stalls in the flea mart – not bad!

Please make payment to the a/c given in the lead post asap.

Tks all, and see you on 1st May, 3p.m.

  143. Hi DanH

Please inform Amy Kor + partner that they’ve got a stall at the flea mart.

    Are you selling ice cream?

    Jassmine

  144. Jass @ #151, thanks and in that case I’ll buy you a drink. Will see what else I might pick up from yr stall but unlikely the koala bear cos kid has out-grown that stage and if at all, she wants the real thing.

The tide has changed and KT must be busy catching the wind……..in fact this is the time to enter the mart which will ride thru some ups-n-downs but with the downside risk contained.

The lady who wished to use my table to sell her books, sorie, i dont hv yr number to call to confirm so if your’re still keen to use it, kindly call me by 7 p.m. tomorrow so that i cd hold it for you? Thanks.

  145. Hi Jassmine,

Yes, I am selling ice-creams direct from the Philipines. We have yam, coconut n coffee flavours to name a few!

  146. “Yes, I am selling ice-creams direct from the Philipines.”

Well, if that’s the case, you dont need a table but a very long bamboo stretching fr the Philippines across the subic bay over the malacanang palace with some of yr ice cream melting & dripping over the kelong you stayed recently in the south china sea.

How much will you price yr ice cream?

  147. Hi Tim @# 154

You buy me a drink, I buy you an ice cream (you3 lai2, you3 qu4) and Danz will be grinning from ear to ear.

The mystery lady will be selling some of her books at your table. Don’t know who else will be using your table.

Ok – see you on 1st May.

    JassmineT

  148. Hi DanH @# 155

Don’t forget the bread. Any ice cream with real red beans?

    Jassmine

  149. Yalor Jass, wu lai wu ki…………..if we get to bounce on DanH’s long bamboo hard we might catapault him over fr Philippines to Scorebot and we fly in the reverse direction for free ice cream and a holiday at pasangan……

Hope to hear from her by tomorrow otherwise will release my table for others’ use……….

  150. Hi Dan H,

Good to hear you selling ice cream after all. Why all the way from Philippines when you can easily buy Magnolia and Walls from Spore ? Must try out your unusual ice cream from Filipinas.

    Cost of 1 orig. VCD/Movies = ?

Pls help as I need it to price label them Now.

    Thanks

    SC

  159. Hehe Dan.
“Tom and Jerry”? that must be another new one. The one I know is “Ben and Jerry’s”. ;-)

  160. Hi Steven @# 164

It looks like pre-flea mart jitters that caused you to rise before dawn . Won’t happen again after your first experience.

It’s good to publicise what you are selling so we’ll try not to sell similar things – we’ve other things from our storeroom to sell.

My observations (from selling at the 1st flea mart): Generally cute/interesting/practical items costing about $1 attract a lot of interest and sell well too. So price your things as low as you can if they are your white elephants.

Besides the SHC community, remember to target members of the public and tourists too.

Salvation Army sells cds at $1 each. I think your watches are interesting.

If you have a plastic table cloth/shower curtain.., you can use it to cover your wares if it rains. Vendors can creep under the tables for shelter. lol! Hope King Seng won’t shoot that kind of action!

Our stalls will be quite close to one another, so should you need to disappear for a few minutes, I’m sure your neighbours won’t mind keeping an eye on your stall.

    Happy packimg!

    JassmineT

  161. Hi Danz,

….Tom n Jerry i ice cream . never heard of must be your own concocted brand.

If I am not wrong, I thought they were cartoon characters a cat chasing the mouse.

Have to report for voluntary work now.

Pls. reserve 1 of your Tom and Jerry ice cream flavoured ice cream for me lah!

    See ya besok!

  162. DanH @# 163

Your exclamation mark tells me there is no bread…Hmm,I suppose it’s better than no ice-cream! lol.

    Might try a mango FIC.

    JassmineT

  163. Steven, perhaps you cd use this tagline “Priced At Cost, Sold At Bargain” which will obviate the need to price yr goods realistically…..let people bargain and you can say to some of them “Chee sin huh? Sor lo leh ge……….”. Even if you dont get to sell, you get the fun of scolding people.

Breaded ice cream is child’s play for DanH, too elementary. He’s going to show us chucky’s play, wrapping his ice cream with roti prata in devils’ curry, a sure cure for the long suffering constipated.

  164. Steven

Mayb tis more realistic tagline will boost ur sales tremendously. Jump Block Sale, Selling Below Cost.

  165. Hi DanH

Don’t forget your ice-cream bell, pl ring the bell loud n clear, n we’ll be like ants crawling to your table.

With us, SHCians your first customers, in no time your ice-cream will be kosong, with or without bread. Further more a BIG umbrella, will be handy for you, especially with the HOT HOT sun glaring down on you n your ice-cream.

    RonLai

  166. Jass, since I still hv not received her call, kindly release my table for anyone who has need to use it. Absolutely no charge or impost. Thanks and see you tomorrow………..rushing off now for an engagement.

  167. Steven @ 182

    Guess u r wrong. They r now overstk n take-in price is ard 30 to 40 cents.

  168. Hi Jassmine,

Could you pls. laon some stools from Score bods, otherwise by the end of the day, all the vendors will be “Hunchbacks of Notre Dame” LOL.

    SC

  169. Hi Amy @# 183

    SC

  172. Hi Steven #189,

Re your flea mart sale, what did you sell, and were the items saleable? Trying to get you to share your experience, so as to encourage or discourage future flea mart vendors. How much did you make?

    Terence Seah

  173. Hi Terence at # 90,

Thanks Jassmine for being the EO to give us a chance of selling at a flea mart.

Just to share,my experience at 2nd. flea mart and you can choose to agree or disagree.

To participate in this 2nd. flea mart I was prepared NOT to make any profit but to enjoy the fellowship and experience of selling. If there was any profit made, then it would be an added bonus.

…..Re your flea mart sale, what did you sell, and were the items saleable?

From the list of my items sold, I wrote down to gauge what items are saleable or not.

    1 ) VCDs
“collector’s” movies such as Mary Poppins, Blue Hawaii,Funny Face were all sold to 1 customer who even yearn for more.

    2) Korean popular VCD movies,

    3) Foreign souvenirs such as a wooden catapult , cute Tibetan dolls as key holders, Panda bear carrier bag for children

4)Original famous branded watches, original normal brand watches

    5)Latest Crocs sandal

    6)Genuine brand perfumes.

    …How much did you make?

    Net profit = 4+6+1+3+10+8+1+4+10+4+1+6 – 10 = $48

    Room for improvement:

1)Should have shelters in case of heavy rain otherwise the vendors will scramble for covers and the flea mart dampened spirit.

    2) CARNIVAL spirit was absent although there was heavy rock metal music at Straits Record a few shops away from Score bot that led me to a headache with its constant shouting and screaming noise instead of music.

Would be better if Scorebots could substitute with some pleasant music or pop songs outside their premises.

3)In future, if there ever be a 3rd. SHC flea mart, why not have a NIGHT flea mart and the stretch of walkways where vendors are to be lighted up by many lanterns that will add a romantic carnival feel to the whole place.

    4) Yesterday was a fine sunny HOT,
HOT day. I was so DISAPPOINTED to see Danz selling books instead of ice cream at his stall.

There was NO ice cream on display at his table except for a sign that said ice cream is sold.

Any potential customers that pass by would have definitely MISS the ice cream but see books instead. If not that I had read in his comments that he was selling ice cream from Philippines, I too would have MISS his yummy ice cream.

And so when I went over to his stall to buy the ice cream,I was shocked , no ice cream on display.

He told me to wait a while and came back with 2 scoops of ice cream in a cup from Scorebots.

At least Scorebot could provide Danz with a small freezer to store his buckets of ice cream instead of making him walk inside Scorebots to get his ice cream everytime there was an order.

Moreover, yesterday was a very HOT day , more customers would have bought Danz ‘s ice cream if they see ice cream being sold in his invisible “freezer”.

For future vendors, I suggest you bring in FOREIGN items that are not too expensive becos locals are BORED with seeing so many local goods displayed at the pasar malams all over Spore. that they don’t even bother to take a look.

    SC

  174. Steven @ # 191

Thanks for your valuable feedback. Exactly my thoughts.

We are very pleased with the result yesterday. As an outlet, we made record sales. Another record. One lady down 7 bottles of beer all by herself. Wouldn’t tell you who. Lucky I didn’t offer to buy her a drink.

The non-SHC vendors who paid market price also did very well. Their tables were crowded with customers. The difference is in merchandising. Theirs was selected consignment stock carefully targetted for maximum demand at the right demographics.

Yesterday have shown that the idea of a free concert and a flea market is a runaway winner.

My comments to your post are as follows.

    – Net profit = 4+6+1+3+10+8+1+4+10+4+1+6 – 10 = $48

You would have made much more if you stayed later to say 10pm. The place was even more crowded at night.

1)Should have shelters in case of heavy rain otherwise the vendors will scramble for covers and the flea mart dampened spirit.

    Yes, we should have this.

    2) CARNIVAL spirit was absent although there was heavy rock metal music at Straits Record a few shops away from Score bot that led me to a headache with its constant shouting and screaming noise instead of music.

You can’t deny that the Y generation music pack in the kind of youthful consumers who will buy value knick knacks typical of a flea market. We can try the next time. I am thinking of two types of bands in a musical festival in the field opposite. This will create an open air concert of the type famous in Hyde Park of London. BTW, the band was arranged by courtesy of Scorebot although it took place in our neighbours place. We will get a permit to dance and also get our line dancing girls in action.

3)In future, if there ever be a 3rd. SHC flea mart, why not have a NIGHT flea mart and the stretch of walkways where vendors are to be lighted up by many lanterns that will add a romantic carnival feel to the whole place.

Suggested but turned down. We’ll try it next time. But vendors must also up their act. There will be additional costs which can only be justified with more revenue. Note that the Arab street “Balek Kampong” carnival behind our flea market charges $250 for 4 nights. They also don’t have extensive night support.

    4) Yesterday was a fine sunny HOT, HOT day. I was so DISAPPOINTED to see Danz selling books instead of ice cream at his stall.

I said this a thousand times. F&B must be pre-arranged. If you sold F&B in an organised fashion to the concert crowd last night you could have easily made $500 to $1,000 yesterday.

There are many considerations which sound simple but have onerous consequences.
For Dan, just invest in a small ice cream push cart. You can easily restocked from Scorebot in batches. You will get much more sales faster instead of running in and out of Scorebot carrying ice cream cones. Another detail. You should not be taking out cones from the freezer one by one. You could compromise Scorebot’s F&B frozen store by regular exposure to room temperature.

Its not that we are not trying to help. We turned both eyes blind to accomodate everybody yesterday. But it is totally unnecessary. It is better for all to find some time to sit down and have a proper operation plan.

  175. Hi KT, Steven,

The feedback sounds like we have had a good Flea mart experience yesterday. We need to learn from our experience. i could not turn up, but how was the crowd?

Calling Dan, Ann and Jass, please share your experience and give us your feedback too. Once we have all the feedback, we can decide how or if we proceed further.

    Terence Seah

  176. Hi KT @ 192,

What did the non-SHC vendor sell? What sort of crowd did we have? i.e. the age group of the crowd, locals, tourists or domestic helpers. Am trying to do some studies here and hope to participate in one of the future SHC flea markets. Thks in advance.

  177. Steven, this is my last & final warning to you – pls dont pester me ever again to buy yr x-rated vcds…………….what big deal to see animals like elephants naked?

Scorebot obviously did a roaring biz, with myself spending a princely of at least $20 in there alone when, which I have calculated, the cost was no more than $4.78216. Little wonder why KT who usually hides only his eyes hid all his nose, ears in his laughters yesterday.

Thanks Jass for buying me a Dancing ice cream which tasted great and attested to what I hv been told : Filipina milk is heavenly.

  178. Tim @ #195

What happen to the table that you were suppose to book.

I notice that the band yesterday took a long time just tuning their instruments. But the crowd seems to be entertained and continue to build up in anticipation.

So here’s how you can help. You can do what you do best next flea market. We’ll get you to tune your instrument in between bands to build up the crowd. Remember your chest wig and the last shirt button-up at the navel.

    Hee-hee

  179. Hi all

A note of thanks to all who participated in the 2nd flea mart as vendors or as visitors.
Thanks too to King Seng who volunteered to be the photographer.

The flea mart enjoyed a modest success thanks to all of you.

    Once again, THANK YOU.

    JassmineT (coordinator)

  180. “What happen to the table……” KT, you ask me, I ask who?

You were keeping watch of that table and doing a fine job loading it on yr back like the 1-time craze ninja turtle as you walked abt shaking hands with the band members and shaking under the weight of the table.

It’s a wonder there’re still people out there who dont know how much you can do for a friend.

  181. Terence @ #193 & Ivy @ #194

If you ask me the band sounded, uh …. unusual. Funny thing they are suppose to be a reputable band that had been playing in front of packed audiences at the esplanade. Someone remarked that they seem to have a cult like fan following. I was told it is some kind of fusion raggae. The band cut their own mixes and they sell their own CD’s. It is sort of underground music.

I am thinking of adding busking like breakdancing and skate acrobatics next time. SHC can contribute dancing and singing. Captain Beer’s demo and origami will be big hits too. I think this program will really thrill the crowd and sell containers.

    Here are my demographic estimates.

At times the crowd was so thick that you had to push your way through through the sidewalk. But that is good. Automatically, the crowds started to pause and looked at things on sale at the flea market. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a big enough presence and the range of goods were relatively small.

    (a) Besides the SHC supporters which made up perphaps 10 % of the traffic, the rest were a mixed, cosmopolitan group.

    (b) I would say that 60% were of the young people of the Orchard Road; hang-out; arty-farty; dressed-up; cool-gang variety. There are many groups of larger than five. It was like a street party. Many people seem to know each other. All are generally well dressed and fashion concious.

    (c) 10% are family members on an outing. Very few children.

    (d) Adult tourists make up for the balance 20%.

So it is not your normal NTUC grocery day, family crowd. I think there is enormous appeal for entertainment, fashion wears from head to toe, apparel wares, body paint, fancy hair cuts and lifestyle products. Portable consumer electronics from music players, handphones to handhelds would be great too. F&B with pushcarts and popcorn trays for snacks and drinks would be very lucrative.

  182. Nora,

I believe I had a fascinating chat with you and your daughter. She seems grooved in to the scene. Can we interest her to be our merchandising consultant.

This position is open to anyone who can identify with the taste and times of the crowd at the flea market.

  183. Hi Steven

Well done! You actually sold $58 worth of goods. Not bad for a first timer. I sold $30.50 worth of goods but felt satisfied as I was in the flea mart for the experience.

    Feedback:

It was a noisy flea mart. The live, heavy metal music attracted the Y generation which was good, but many of them were smokers and we, vendors nearby, became passive smokers!

    JassmineT

  184. Terence,

I want to JV in your next container of exotic rubbers from Thailand. That will solve Steven’s “balloons to line the street” problem..

    Tim gets the blow job.

I will be too busy marking out the field into king size lots. Landbanking for short time rent.

How? Simple. Just like old days marking out SJI football field in Bras basah Road. For all those MRT boys and convent girls.

    We still have your photographs!!!

    Hee-hee.

  185. KT, you see the big DHL balloon flying near where Scorebot is? I inflated it so if you need to runaway when things are getting a tad hot to handle, let me know and I’ll just blow you & the
‘bot to where the selamat is hiding, heeee, very safe, even the gurkhas cant find you to scald the ‘bot.

Any mention of soccer will bring back the keen rivalries btwn our schools in the 70s. A soccer (or hockey) match was a carnival with the Infant gals shouting themselves hoarse for attention. And it worked as during the half-time break, we wd locate the gals whom we fancied and arranged to meet after the referee blew the final pee pee. The rest is history.

  186. KT @ 199,

thanks for the valuable feedback…I’m getting a clearer picture now. I’m also thinking how SHCians could fit into the y generation crowd. With the hot sun over our heads, F&B seems to be best option…perhaps homemade lime soda and soyabean milk in addition to ice-cream/gelato on waffles. Your suggestion on apparal also makes sense but not sure these young girls would be interested to visit stalls man by aunties and uncles…No offence hor, I’m just thinking out loud like Terence. Must do some head-cracking…

  187. Hi Kt/Terence,

My focus was om the ice-cream rather than the books. The books n comic was only a front!

Since no F & B was allowed, I have to move the ice-cream selling indoor. Marcus has kindly allowed me to keep the ice-creams in the freezer indoor.

Really, I suffer a lost in this venture. But it’s also for the fun that I devoted the time n energy. I even went for a typhoid injection so that I can serve food!

I do learn some lessons though. Next time should I peddle ice-cream again, I will return in style with a tricycle and a bell on the street!

  188. Hi guys!!

I was there at 7.30pm and only saw one long fellow snoring away on the sofa in ScoreBot!!

Obviously i’d missed the action, and also the heat! It was a tremendously hot day!

But all the action was in the roads and lanes around Arab Street and they even closed part of Bussorah Street. Parco Bugis was also crawling with revellers and the restaurants were jammed-packed too.

Was it a good day to run a flea market?

  189. Ken @ #206

Was an excellent day. And night. The concert at night drew even more people.

Unfortunately, it was decided not to extend the nite and into the weekend.

We get Steve workout on the treadmill for a week before the next event. Two hours and he’s pumped out. I am planning a bigger and longer extravaganza the next time round.

So watch out for this space. If you are not in it already, get into a Home Entrepreneurship program. We are talking about some serious passive income that you can retire to now.

Ready for some heavy metal rock and roll?

  190. KT,

Noted your concern. The question is whether F&B is allowed or not!

I have suggested to Shirley n Marcus to take over the ice-cream that I paid for on consignment basis. Due to lack of manpower they felt it is not feasible.

I felt that your outlet also stand to gain because those who consume the ice-cream also order hot n cold beverages!
