Handy-man? Mr Fix-it? Fix-it enthusiast? “Fixing stuff as a Hobby”?

Are you a “handy-man”? Are you a “fix-it enthusiast”? Do you enjoy the challenge of repairing household items and getting them to work again?

If you answer "yes" to any of the above questions, here is good news!

I have several household items that need to be repaired, and can be put to good use again.

If you are "Mr Fix-it", and you can repair TV, washing machine, stand-fan, microwave oven, please come and take them away. FREE.

OR – If you know someone who is connected to an old-folks’ home or orphanage, that has an in-house handy-man who could repair and put these items to good use, please ask him to come and take them away.

The external conditions of these household items are well-kept, and look better than the ones you’d find in second-hand dealer’s stores:

Washing machine, fully-auto, Samsung 5 litre load.

Problem: It moved very slowly and made a groaning sound as it tried to swirl clothes.

TV, 32 inch, Toshi, color.

Problem: Went blank. One small dot of white light.

Microwave oven, Farfella.

Problem: inside’s turntable and light work fine, but “no heat”.

Stand-fan, Mestar, has timer and speed control.

Problem: fan blades rotate slowly.

  1. Hi Jac,
I think hor, u did your post in word n cut/paste 2 post rite as the start of your post showing lots of unreadable words leh.. Dolly

  2. Well, Jac-H, you cant expect to find in an old fart the same raging bull performance of a young upstart raring for more bite?

So, you shdnt expect yr old mate to go on washing for you indefinitely or sing “ooo ooo yea ye yea ye, I love you mroe than i can say” but to groan for attention & sayang.

That tv….didnt you consider yrself very lucky that no woman with hair covering face walking out, like it was in “The Ring”?

The microwave oven…”no heat”. Well, honestly, after so many years together, you still think of heat, want heat? Some had it worse…the companion “turn cold”.

So accept the Cycle of Life. Dont look beyond what you already have. Most of all, Mr Fix It will also get old one day, and when that happens, another Mr Fix It?

So, if you finally see what I see and dont ask for Mr Fix It but look for Mr Garang Guni, I have a few lined up for you. Not very handsome but they all pay.

    Hehe………..

  3. Hi Jacqueline Han,

All the electrical problems listed from you from those electrical appliances prove one thing ” Soon Choong ” .

Not worth repairing at all. Even karung guni men are selective nowadays.

  4. Hi Tim,
Thank you for suggesting the karang guni man. Actually, I was about to call the Karang guni men listed in the classifieds, then, I remember an “old uncle” (an elderly neighbour). He would pick up discarded household items from the rubbish bin area: toaster, microwave oven, PC monitor, fans, etc. His hobby is to repair them and get them working again. Then, he’d give them away to his needy neighbours. Genuine kindness is very rare, thus, I remembered him. He has since moved away.

Another “uncle” who is the husband of an old friend, also has similar interest. The wife complained that their house is filled with junks. But, the husband really enjoyed the challenge of fixing stuffs. He also enjoyed the joy of giving away the stuff he has fixed.

Sigh. These two “uncles” are truly rare, indeed. In this modern day of affluence, nobody bothers to repair stuff. Everybody prefers to discard the broken one and buy a new one. I appreciate your philosophical perspective on this.

Thank you for sharing. Have a nice day.

  5. Hi Dolly! Already replied to you via email. Thanks a lot for your help. I just want to thank Yew Kwong for rectifying the “missing text”.

Hi YEW KWONG – THANK YOU very much for “putting right what was wrong”.

Both of you: have a great day! Cheers!

  6. Hi Steven! Pardon my ignorance – what/who is “soon choong”?

Thank you for your opinion. I agree that those “out of order items” are not worth repairing: Repair labour charge is expensive. In our affluent society, we prefer to pay a bit more to buy a new one. That’s the reason why my post is calling for a “handy-man”. I was thinking that the “handy-man” can save money on labour charge.

Usually, I’d call the karang guni man to come and take away these “need-to-repair-items”. But, yesterday, as I was about to call him, I remembered two “uncles” who would “turn useless stuff into working stuff”. [Please refer to my reply to Tim at #4]

The Karang guni man is a clever businessman. He will take everything for a few dollars. Repair whatever he can, and resell at a profit. Those that he can’t repair, he will sell them as “scraps”. Clever man! I will call him, if there are no “handy-man in the house”.

  7. Jac-H, you hv put me in a fix….now, what shall I do with you?

I came into yr thread as the usual KLKia and yr reply to me was so soothing that it totally disarms me, and if you allow me to be honest, almost “dis-dress” me too. And you still thank this KLK somemore,,,,,,,like that, no fun lah.

Seriously, the other items can be taken away by a handyman to repair. However, the 5kg washing machne is a bit heavy to carry around, in & out of lifts, up stairs. And if it cant be repaired, the reverse process all over again.

On garang guni man, it reminds me of that poor lass Constance C who was not only cheated of love by a GG man but also her life savings. And, mind you, that fella hasnt even the look of a G-glow man !

So, no, Jac, I shall not lined up any GG man for you. Perhaps, good if any folks in SHC will respond and take on the challenge to repair the appliances which can then be given away to whoever has the need.

  8. Hi Jacqueline,

    …what/who is “soon choong”?

When someone says Soon Choong in Cantonese, it is NOT a
pleasant word. Not to worry, I refer that term to your electrical appliances.

Soon Choong means “the time is up”
And for someone’s birthday, never soon choong :- never offer a clock.
