An enriching life

Hi All

I believe most of us now welcome the time we have and the opportunity to do things we missed out. I am wondering how to fill my time now with activities that can still allow for new learning or relearning what was forgotten. Some have found their niches, some like me are still looking. I wonder if any who share this view would like to learn new things or teach things/skills they know to other SHCians.

For the time I’m in S’pore I would like to meet members to discuss this with the objective that perhaps we can get together to hold some of these activities at various locations. An example can be hand quilting which I like to learn or even making sushi/dumplings/mooncakes. Other areas can be conversational Japanese, swimming, ebay buying etc. If there are some who can teach these and some who are keen to learn, we can start lessons. Who knows, this can turn out to be business opportunites for some.

Regards

Joan

  2. Hi Joan,

    Welcome back to Singapore soon.
I believe the 18 Apr 1.30pm date we set are meant for
discussion for exploring a homestay cum education biz at
    your condo.

Is there other agenda you have in mind by opening this up
to the rest of the club? If so, you may want to set a
    different time or date.

My suggestion is our Education discussion should last 1.5-
    2hrs.

    james

  3. Hi Joan,
    I love handicrafts.
Would like to meet with like minded people.
Please let me know when you plan to meet, if there is a change of venue/time as per James’ suggestion.
    Email address is g3phoenix@ yahoo.com
    Let me know the details.
    Thanks & regards………Jie

  4. Hi Joan,
I used to enjoy handicrafts like quilting, crochet, knitting, angpow novelties, even moon cake making. It might be nice to go back to doing them again.
We’ll be meeting on the 18th to discuss what James Tan mentioned in #3, so, perhaps we could talk about these interests after the discussion.

  5. Hi Joan,

I learnt from the onset we have to balance time, health and wealth to live comfortably in the autumn of our lives, more so in Singapore. Play or hobbies will absorb considerable time and energy. Working on things of your interest that at the same time pays will be the better combination. What is it that will set you going for days doing things that absorb your intellect, provides contentment and have value.

They are many that we need to re-discover for ourselves. I hang out on a planned basis at Tiong Bahru Plaza 15th Floor where people of our age group meet.

Care to make arrangement to discover what you can do with others who has a long journey in their autumn?

    Cheers…………..Edwin

  6. Hi Joan

  7. Hi Vivian, james, Grace, Mary, Gwyneth,Edwin and All

Just got back from a short trip to KL and wow to read all your messages.

Yes, we must meet on 18 Apr. I had initially planned to be at my place and if it’s not too inconvenient, we can meet there the 1st time and after that perhaps see where we can have further get-togethers. I will email you my address directly and if it’s not convenient then we’ll meet somwhere more central.

From the comments, looks like some are interested in quilting. I too want to learn that – hand quilting as I don’t have a sewing maching and it takes a long time. I have that now and that’s why I do cross-stitching.

Edwin #8 suggested Tiong Bahru Plaza where he has already a group. May meet them one day too.

For others who just want to contribute ideas and post comments on this post, please feel welcome to on this post.

    Regards
    Joan

  8. Hi Joan,
I wonder if it is an oversight on your part that my name is left out of your comment.
If you need a more comprehensive list of handicrafts that I have done during my ‘ idle-hands’ years. they are crochet, knitting, patchwork/quilting and semi-precious stone jewellery.
I would like to reevive what I know, and maybe learn a few new ones.
Hope to hear from you ……..Jie

  9. Hi everyone,

I would love to join in but unfortunately, I am attending a full day workshop on the 18th. I used to do cross-stitching, knitting, cross-word puzzles (that takes a long time too) and quilting. I have a contact in KL who get volunteers to do quilting and the blankets are sent to boys/girls homes. He has a site where it states how to do quilting. If anyone is interested, I can post the link here.

  10. Hi Joan Wong

  14. Hi Vivian, Jie, Mary Chan, Gwyneth, Annie. Sock Cheng and others interested

We are meeting on 18 Apr at 1.30 pm. The venue now is at Spotlight at Plaza Singapura, top floor (I think) and not Toa Payoh or my apartment. I will wear a red top so it’s easy to spot me. I will try ti stay at the entrance area.

The topics would be on enrichment learning and mainly on craft but can be other things that SHCians are interested to learn or teach. Please feel free to discuss things which can be opportunities for us whether in terms of starting a homebased business or just an excuse to learn things from 1 another or together.

    Regards
    Joan

  15. HI All

So far, a few plus myself have indicated interest in learning quilting. I’m now looking for a quilting teacher. So if any SHCian can teach or knows a contact, please let me know and I will discuss with the person course charges etc.

The trainer can teach at his/her place or if need a training venue, it can be at my home.

    Regards
    Joan
