You too can pick up card tricks from Thomas Lau

Many of us have always been amused by card tricks.  With a pack of aladdin cards, someone with one year’s practice and effort can easily get the young and the old, eyes focused and glued onto the table, hands and cards.  You too can learn card tricks, and win the hearts of kids and adults.

Today, I joined a small group and met Thomas Lau.  Although he claimed to start learning card tricks a year ago, he was very much an expert, fooling all around him.  Thomas entertains elderly seniors at daycare centres.  He is also a great origami paper folder.  Well, I remembered he said he could perform 150 card tricks.

Thomas volunteers to give a demo of a few card tricks; and he is willing to share with us how some of these tricks are carried out.  Perhaps, if I can learn a few card tricks, I can be an entertainer and maybe make $1000 per month entertaining the young and old.

Thomas will schedule two sessions, each group about 15 pax, on a Saturday, time between 11am and 2pm.  Place and date will be scheduled soon.  Thank you Thomas.

  2. Hi Terence,

i mustn’t miss this golden opportunity to learn a few card tricks. Please put me down for the 11a.m. session. TQ Thomas for your generosity. :)

  3. Sometimes, when we have talks especially with small groups, we find it difficult to see what the presenter is showing. So, I am thinking of getting a projector with screen. And, maybe a little computer, where the presenter can use, just by loading his/her USB.

If you know of someone wanting to sell a used projector, and not costing a bomb, please let me know. TK.

  4. Hi Terence and Thomas

Confirmed that I’ll attend on 23.10.10. However, I’ll have to leave a bit earlier, around 1.30 pm for another function.

    C u all then,

  5. Hi Dolly #10

    Food for thought….

To bring in more business for the cafe, perhaps you would like to consider inviting SHCians for yak yak sessions on Sat between 11 am – 2.30 pm? Ah Ha?

We’ll sure order drinks and snacks from the cafe. Just a suggestion cos I’m sure there are others, like me, feeling bored staying at home…. empty nest syndrome lar… Hence,
this can be a win-win situation for you and us?

    Cheers
    Gabriella

  6. Dear Gaballa/Gabriella……..

Able said “to stay indoors the whole day and it happens that one does not make a phone call throughout the whole day and neither is a incoming call received, then one becomes dumb for a period of 12/13hours” scary as one aged…….I am in if this “yak yak sessions” is on……shall we yak yak what other options we hv if we do not sign up for C P F Life?

    cheers

This weekend I will be away, hope you can organise another session. Although I have been watching my son performing all the cards tricks in the past, and giving him feedbacks….I would love to watch or pick up some tricks from another individual like you. hehehe… :)

    Ah Nee

  9. Hi Freda #13

Great! Found a yak yak kaki…..

It’s scary to be ‘dumb’ for more than 12 hours as we age and living alone. Hence, now is the time to get ready before our time comes, by NETWORKING! kekekeeee….

    Cheersssss……….

  10. Hello Thomas and Terence:

Yes, I would like to come in and pick up a few card tricks and also catch up with my sexytary at the same time. What an opportunity! Thank you and cya!

  11. I am pretty impressed at how this hobby event is progressing, with the demo by Thomas Lau. Many members have a lot of hobby skills. But for some reason, we have not explored doing more such events.

Let’s see how Thomas’s card tricks and origami gets going. And, for those who have hobbies, and like to share and teach, please raise your hands. Feel free to also discuss with Dolly Lim, who is one of SHC’s oldest birds.

Thank You for the good suggestion,I have under estimate the number of participants, hence the limited pack of cards that I have will not be enough,so participants who have pack of cards,to bring it along.

  15. A tutorial about to begin, in a cozy cafe…

    He walked in, unaided,
to where the early birds had gathered.

    A corner seat he sought,
and placed aside the plastic bag he brought.

None knew, till the Sifu’s whisper:
    “That’s my card trick master”!

A talented man with no airs is hard to come by.
Another surprise – the Sifu’s SIFU is 89!!

    The cards on the table the grand-maestro lay;
his instructions he gave in a systematic way.

His learners all displayed quick learning ability,
thanks to the grand-maestro’s guiding efficiency.

    Grand-sifu, now a card-trick entertainer I can be,
but hor, thy healthy longevity – is there a recipe?

    *********

Thank you very much Thomas and Uncle Lim for the fruitful session. Very interesting – so glad i was there. :) If we forget some steps, could we meet you at your regular haunts for a refresher?

TQ Thomas for bringing your Sifu. :)

  16. Jass-T, that’s a nice poem but the mere inserting “copyright” below doesnt afford you any protection. Withou fling an application, you’ll need to watch over it 24/7, holding a roller=pin in yr hand.

Btw, dont let yr adoration for your sifu ????turn you into sigu (????hehe.

In my kampong days, there was this boy who cd throw playing-cards to slice off leaves? His biggest feat was cutting down a young banana tree branch over a fortnight. Alas, he didnt grow up to be a ninja as his parents wanted him to sell turtle soup……..

  17. #30 Tim L

Hmm looks like you don’t know this word (copyright) has magic. By stating that my work is copyrighted, it instantly becomes a property – an intellectual property! lol! :)

Ok, seriously – there’s no registration for a copyright. It subsists when a work is published.

    cheers,

  18. So Jass-T, you arent going to register yr copied work??

(Wonder what will happen at IPOS when the officers see a not so young lasy holding a roller pin in 1 hand and waving a stack of papers n the other, ask for protection. They might probably resign en masse).

Heeee, you must hv tried it before to know…………

  19. # 32 Tim L!

tsk! tsk! how could u say that my work is ‘copied’ when they are all original! Go sit in a corner and reflect on your lapse in concentration that resulted in a lexical choice with grave implications. And no karaoke for one month, understand?
    :(

  20. Alamak, Jass-T, why are you jumping up and down like a sun-bear after honey?

It has got nothing to do with lexical choice or my laxity in the language.

See, if registration of copyright works was available, you need to make copies for filing. You can make your good mind work on new poems but still, you need to copy them as is the case for trademark registrations (and the need to register a TM is not a joke).

Yes, me just back from another k’ok session, all cha cha songs with some ah sors, waiting for their turns to sing, breaking into dances. I stood there ??, occasionally doing the cha kway teow with my hands, and that wont do. So. will pick up dancing next year and then my ?3? will not be like now,??300 ?………

  21. #34 Tim L
So the problem is semantic confusion. No way can your sentence (with ‘copied’ placed immediately before ‘work’) mean what you wanted it to mean (ie. copies of the original) :(

As mentioned earlier, no registration is needed for copyright of works, unlike registered trade marks, designs, patents, yet the copyright owner gets the copyright protection…so it’s important to include a copyright statement in your work to identify the owner of the work.

Refer to Singapore Copyright Act website for more info…

  22. Jass-T, had I not given any compliment in the first place, I wdnt hv this need to explain.

I know enough of not merely what the website says but also what the legislation has to say, and know enough people & matters of the IPOS. Do you know that its chief’s mother has passed on and her orbituary appears in today’s ST? This you wont know, yeah.

Anyhow, expect no more compliments from me henceforth.
