Write your minds, share your thoughts – other ideas

SilverHairsClub is your club; for members who are 45 years and over.  You can share your thoughts with other members to find better value for your money.

For example, you can pool buying.  And assuming, you are looking to buy, say, an IPAD3.  And, you have discussed with Apple that if you can get 20 buyers, you would be able to get a 15% discount.  Please feel free to write a new Post, find out who’s interested, and when you reach 20, you can get these interested buyers to buy an IPAD3 together.  Obviously, the discount has to be good to attract fellow members.  This is only an example.  But, do not use this as an advertising platform.

Another example, you want to join a SPA but you need 4 people to get an "out of this world" discount.  Sure, go ahead and share with other ladies your idea.  Do remember there are  cheats around.  Again, this must not be an advertising for the company.  You can discuss with fellow members via email too.

Feel free to discuss comparative prices of NTUC, Tops, Cold Storage and Seng Shiong stores for products like chicken, milk, bread, plums, eggs, etc.  If you start this comparison, please remember to keep track of the Post and not leave it dangling.  This will encourage other members to regularly give their feedback, even monthly.

It’s ok to compare insurances which are essential to us, especially as we get older.  Only thing is to avoid getting into direct selling.

Feel free to get into this if you are comfortable doing so.

  1. Haha, Terence

I’d talked about forming a co-operative many moons ago and there was no interest in it from SHC members.

As you said, we can get great discounts and wholesale prices if we can pool our needs and mak e a quantity purchase.

The “official” way to do this is to form a co-operative i.e. register a co-op and operate like NTUC but on a much smaller scale.

Now I need to buy Horlicks, Milo, 10kg Thai fragrant rice, condensed milk and sugar… are there any other members able to combine my order to get a discount price?

Insurance? This is difficult to compare as companies don’t make it easy to compare their products. You may be fortunate to have a broker who can do comparisons for you like which company has the best wholelife policy in terms of premiums and projected returns.

I have a quick and cheap travel insurance from my Chartered Bank card: an annual policy is only $88 although the cover is rather low but it suffices for me.

I will look forward to many members coming forward with ideas on this.

  2. Hi Kenneth #1,

Let’s discuss your concept on this forum. And, see if we can take this to a workable project. I guess to be workable, we need to have some form of mass, ie the ability to buy in mass. Maybe you should share your thought as to how you see we can get a discount with day-to-day consumables. Are you thinking of negotiating of NTUC? Or are you thinking we can take orders, and order a container load?

Sam Goh has a way of getting good value from Malaysia. But again, we need mass buying to be effective.

Yes, I like the idea. Any ideas how to proceed?

  3. Hi Terence

I would like to consider myself fully retired… hopefully with enough funds to outlast the remaining years of my life.

Hence I want to keep my life simple, stress-free if possible, and not taking on mammoth projects or tasks which would make me pull my hair!

I think this concept of pool-buying can best be handled by the Blue Helmet group. The best way to go about it is to register a co-operative society which will give a legal entity to make deals and purchases. You must also address the problem of storage and delivery/collection like when you buy 500kg of rice!

I can only give my blessings and support to the forming of a pool-buying group or co-operative if that happens.

  4. This place is quiet like Chia Chu Kang in the Gohst Month with only Kenneth and Terence whispering eerily to each other.

Since this thread is to write one’s mind and share one’s thoughts, it asks for sound, notably from earthlings who are in touch with this world.

Vehicle growth will be stymied to 0.5% come next August. Residency here will continue to grow unabated. Longer and more frequent train breakdowns due to a higher stress level. Queues at polyclinics and hospitals are likely to snake to snakes’ habitat. The reptiles will hv to migrate to make way for the queues.

Sounds of gigi gokgok from mouths communicating a language very un-Sporean will get closer and closer to our ears. Even when we sleep, we’ll still hear gigi gokgok.

    Omnipresence. Omigosh!

    So how?

By August, I dont think my legs can stand any more, least stand up for anybody. Bcos of the sting I cant sing. No, dont Count on Me but you can add me into your count.

High time then to go up to the 57th storey for a last look at the foreign wealth on display, your aunties serving them tea and yr uncles look blur blur, and take the last ride home. Free and faster than any MRT ride. And when you hit the ground, it’s more than likely you hear gigi gogoks. Many gigi gogoks as bones break and their screams in their vernacular as they are crushed.

    The counting continues…………..

  5. Pool or Group buying is very popular in China. There are thousands of group buying sites there.

In Singapore there are at least 46 such sites according to penn-olson.com/2011/05/03/group-buying-singapore/. You may also google “group buying singapore” to have a feel of the industry. Different sites focus on different products.

In order for SHC group buying to take off, I feel you will need an internet infrastructure to gather an interest amongst members. With the current site we are having it will be difficult to maintain an vibrant group buying. Do not forget it is about volume buying in order to get the discount that is attractive for members to continue or else they can just walk to their neighbourhood supermarts or malls.

Just my one cent worth of comments.

  6. Hi StevenN #5,

Thank you for the feedback & suggestion. I had a look at the website you gave. Can you elaborate how this works for interested members.

I have been eyeing an IPAD; and was hoping to get a good discount if other members are interested. Has anybody another good discount?

  7. iPad price is controlled in Singapore. But if we can get maybe 100 units, we can get a dealer price on them. In Oz or HK you don’t pay GST, so may be cheaper.

Pool buying is just another online website which lists down offers/sales items and usually attracts other like-minded buyers (youths or fashion followers) to buy anything from restaurant vouchers to spa treatments.

I will put myself down for an iPad and a 5kg tin of Horlicks!
