We support Ronald Wi’s participation in the StarHub Challenge

Hi everybody,

Ronald Wi has been leading our retirement living discussions. He has a passion to showcase SilverHairs’ hobbies, skills and crafts.  To do so, he plans to participate in the StarHub Challenge.  It goes like this:

Escape http://app02.vocanic.net/draw/dreammachine?path=1

If you had $50,000, what ambition, passion, or adventure would you make happen?
Tell us below in 100 words or less.

Ronald visualises that with the money, we can have a place to showcase SilverHairs’ knowledge and skills.

If you have a  hobby or skill, traditional or modern, let us know here.  Please write 2-3 paragraphs of your hobby.  Examples include:  porcelain painting, wood carvings, making dolls, glass blowing, bonsai planting, cooking paranakan food, secial traditional foods, pre-war collections, traditional candies making, old paper making, etc, etc.

You never know.  Go back to those years when your hair was black.  Share your hobbies here, Ronald Wi will do the rest.

  1. Hi Ronald & Terence,
The RV meeting of 2 Dec was an eye opener. Hopefully something comes out of the discussions and not just hot air.

The Starhub Challenge of $50,000/- sounds ideal if we have enough to put it together to get it. Have been cracking my head as to how???? But the deadline of 31 Dec. 2006 is a little tight. Maybe Ronaldlike what you said, a proposal could be made with what little we have, and hopefully appeal to their sense of giving something back to the senior citizens whilst waiting for that so-called “Jurong Kechil RV ”

    Or whatever???!!
Maybe ideas will be a little clearer with the New Year.
Merry X’Mas, Health and Peace of mind to all.

  2. Idea from Ronald Wi:

One idea that i proposed and seems acceptable to most of the attendees at today’s RV meeting is the plan to use the SHC’s name, to showcase our passion to participate in the Challgenge to win the $50K (Starhub Passion $50K challenge).

The idea is the proposed usage of the $50K to pay for the startup and rental to have a SilverHair’Club Center for Passion, Diminishing Arts, Craft, Cooking and Culture Practices to house, showcase and promote dying passions of Silverhairs group, such as :-

    1. Jocelyne passion for her Art of Porcelain painting, and with her abundance of art pieces , she can be one of the tenant of this SilverHairCenter.

    2. Another Craft is that of Jade decorating – to be sponspored by Daffydil Tan.

    3. We encourage all to look out for more of such people with passion in doing what they do and to help promote their interest, be it cooking forgotten recipes of food or cake, drinks, that is no longer found, crafts, etc.

It is just an idea, an off spring from the RV meeting. Take note as the closing date is 30th Dec, we will need feedback as soon as possible. I have asked them to email me direct if they know of anyone that has such a passion.

We feel, that the Dover Road , Colonial House that is for rent at $2000 a month , will be an ideal place to act as the SHC Centre and also as the Showhouse, clubhouse, training and meeting centre . So with the $50,000 we can rent the place to start up this vision for at least 2 years. Hopefully we can help it to be
run as a commercially viable centre, through members usage, of it as Cafe, cum Clubhouse and training Center. Profits can be made from products sold as Art & Craft, Souvenirs and also exoctic food and cakes.

This is just a draft plan, and needs further planning and visualisation to beef up the actual Proposal for the Challenge.

What do you think, Terence ? Also , pls do not put this up in the forum yet, as we need more ideas first and also as suggested to keep our proposal away from others who may view our proposal for their advantage.

  3. Hi Ronald,

When I received this email from you last night, I was very pleased to hear of your idea. On a scale of 1-10 (10 is excellent), I would give mt support at 10.

Sure, you are free to use the name of SilverHairsClub, as it is your club. Maybe not a registered club, but sizeable enough to bring your idea to fruit.

The idea is participate and the opportunity to get a sum of money for a place to display skills, crafts, hobbies and interests of SilverHairs is excellent. This meets SilverHairs medium and long term objective.

You go ahead to develop the idea. When you are ready, we can getthe support of the entire group.

  4. Check on this website on the Starhub Challenge, and u can even see many of the submissions already.

Though we have a good plan, it is going to be
difficult to convince them with a short write up, but i have some idea and will also need some help of more ‘Anchor tenants ‘ like Jocelyne. Terence, has said that SHC will support the idea of a Clubhouse serving as Showcase, a Cafe, a learning and meeting centre
maybe a Guest house for special Guest also?

Can anyone help me on this ?
    1. There is someone in SHC who has written Cook Books on Perankan cooking , who is she and her contact? Like her to be another tenant, to showcase her passion and talent.

    2. Any other such people with passions ?

    3. Anyone, has the article about the Houses for Rent for Artistic purposes at Dover Road ? (Lost my clipping somewhere )

Thanks for the support, and encouragement from
Terence, Lisa , Daffydil, and all.

Remember if we do win by any chance, we have to run, upkeep and maintain the place. Guess that will not be a problem with the number of members we have ? (By the way with us our registered number of people?)

Some comments from Lisa, and Terence on this idea for the Starhub challenge.

Please feel free to flow in your ideas.

    From : Lisa,
As for the StarHub challenge for the $50K, I say we go ahead with it after seeing Jocelyn’s work. She’s definitely a gem of S’pore and her work will definitely win us a place to showcase her talent if not win a prize at StarHub. I’ve told her that I’ll be most happy to help out for this StarHub challenge, so just keep me posted on the logistics and admin work needed since we’re so near to the actual event.

  5. The Starhub Challenge is a competition for the prize of $50,000 for someone or a group with a passion of doing something. Only 1 winner .

Check the website for more info and what submissions are being sent in to get an idea.
    http://app02.vocanic.net/draw/dreammachine?path=1

SHC as a group, is for the idea to win this money of $50,000 to pay for the rent of a place in Dover Road (those old colonial house) to SHC centre for showcasing passions of SHC members, also as a Cafe, featureing memebers cooking, cake making, drinks making, etc. and a also for meetings ,etc.

So, as a participant you can get to use the Cafe to showcase or even conduct cooking lessons and weekends cookout for members etc.

But all monies if we do win ,will go into renting, maintainng and operating that house as the SHC Center.

So, if you agree, to participate as part of SHC, we will list your passion as one many other passions of SHC members. So far we have Jocelyne art and cake making, Daffydil Jade Art & Crafts, Mr. Beer Making, IT Center, Health promotion Meridian point 312, Gibson’s Ayupedic Accupressure ,etc., Retirement Village and travel club activites, and the monthly
    Walks, and Cycling acitivities.

Terence , may need you help in answering further admin issues.

    Ronald
