Participate in SPH event “Life Matters” on 27 & 28 July 2013 Suntec Hall 404

We receive an invitation to participate in an expo “Life matters”.  I thought of participating by taking a booth, with the objective of increasing our membership.  Often we advertised in the papers, but the costs are high.

This event is specially tailored for seniors in Singapore.

Where and When?
* Venue: Suntec Singapore, Hall 404
* Date: Sat & Sun, 27 & 28 July 2013
* Time: 10am – 8pm
* Feature dates: The Straits Times & Shin Min 26 July (Friday)/ Lianhe Zaobao 27 July (Saturday)

The SPH organiser has costings, starting from $4,588 for one booth.  It’s a standard size booth.

Is there any member/s who would like to share the booth?  We can share out; and it would be fun to have our members to also attend the Expo on a Saturday and Sunday.

  1. Hi Terence,

    Not enough info leh.

    1. Do you mean voluntary contribution? If each contributes $100, you need 46 members to come forward. Might be possible, about time we do something in return for all the work you have done for us in return for nothing.
    2. Need to volunteer also to man the stall?
    3. It’s basically to create an awareness, to do outreaching and recruit more members? Nothing else?
    4. Why not also do some advertising for Eldersitters service?
    5. How about the physical props – who will put up the design, pictures, etc?

This one looks like a big task! Eh eh, Hope you dun think I’m excited about this because of my questions hor. Just curious only. Dun mind the contribution part but I don’t think you’re looking at half half hor?

    1. Hi Susan and fellow members,

I was thinking that the cost of the booth is rather high, but life events focusing on Seniors attract many visitors to the booth. So, I thought the idea of sharing with interested members make sense.

I believe we can increase our membership tremendously, and bring more mass participation to the different activities. We may even balance our club sex imbalance. We will meet new people too.

SilverHairsClub culture is pretty well developed, so we can be sure of having a strong core.

What I was looking for was for members to participate. Obviously, the booth is not huge. I guess we can have pictures pasted on the wall, individual posters of the different interest groups and maybe individual services.

We would definitely do membership recruitment. Volunteer helpers would be needed on either Sat or Sun.

Members visiting the Expo can drop by and have a coffee 3 in one or tea, take a rest and meet one another just like a SilverHairsClub gathering.

No, I am not expecting members to foot a huge bill. Perhaps a share for a poster, I rather this be at the descretion of the member. We should hope to be the noisiest booth at the Expo.

      Let’s dream.

  2. Sir, still not clear enough.

    1. When is the deadline?

    2. How do we contribute. Make pledge here and pay later? I suppose you’d want to make it transparent?

    3. I think in fund-raising, we’d like to know what is the range of $ proposed. Perhaps anything from $20 to $200?

    4. You might create 3 groups: Group 1 for $ contributions. Group 2 for volunteer helpers (any shifts?). Group 3 for registration for the event.

Pardon for such direct questions but I think it’s better to be clear.

    Asking only……..

  3. Good idea to publicise SHC to the masses. I support the idea of making a contribution n would also volunteer to duty at Booth. Maybe to recruit members for monthly cycling.

  4. Hi Terence

I’m willing to make a contribution (max of $100) and volunteer to help at the booth depending on my schedule and the duty roster. Think, it’ll be FUN …

    Regards….

    1. Thank you YK, Susan, Gabriella, for the participation.
I have not given it a thought in detail, but let me work on it.

It would be if we have two days to promote the interests of different groups. Everybody, please think about it.
We should aim to add more people to our activities.

      Terence Seah

  5. Hi Terence,

$100.00 contribution from me as well. Hopefully can be of some help. Will confirm whether can help at the booth when closer to the day.

    Jac

  6. Hi Terence,
same like jac, . Hopefully can be of some help. Will confirm whether can help at the booth when closer to the day. May I contribution a $100/=.

    Irene

  7. Thank you JacQ and IreneP, and members,

    Thank you for the contribution.

Basically, I think that membership increase is vital to SHC or else we might see the same faces each time. Organice growth is slow, via word of mouth.

What I am hoping to achieve is to jump on SPH vast media resources by participating in the “Life matters” Expo for seniors. This will help increase our membership. Interest groups can also bring in new participation.

    I thought about it.

    * First, I am hoping to find enough members to HELP share the cost of the booth at the Expo. This is $4500.

    * If we receive more, we shall keep the cash for nationwide membership drive only

    * If we receive less, SilverHairs Enterprise shall pay the balance.

Over the next few days, I shall appoint a volunteer treasurer to keep track of this amount and Expo expenses. All balance monies will be kept by SilverHairs Enterprise PL in a special account. Future expenses will again be for nationwide memmbership drive. Can I have a hands up for a volunteer treasurer. The records of the expenses will be announced on this website.

If you or your interest group wishes to participate at the “Life matters” Expo, please do write here, so we can have it in our plan. Please note booth is not big.

Can I also have someone to deal with the media? The person must be active and have been in the Club for at least 2 years, is aware of the activities and understand Club culture, basically someone you can call the SHC core.

    Look forward.

  8. One way to get a subsidized booth is to find who are the partcipants (exhibitionist) and speak/write to them to piggy ride or “tong pang” from the organizer. We can add value to their booth with our SHC data base or even provide volunteer to their booth. Most suitable candidate would be one that do publication for elderly or promote ageing care product for health or well being.

We can co-bundle our aim of recruitment of SHC with ther offer/services. Just a thought to ponder.
July being quite a few months away does allow time for such
developmental work if we agree this is the way to go.

Wish I could help in some ways but currently heavily involved in many projects. Believe there should be no lacking of volunteer to man the booth .

  9. Hi Leon #11,

Some members and myself had earlier ask some publications to go along with us. We had tried that. Most do not like the idea of tompang. For many others, they feel the booth is too small, for another party.

But, if you could talk to some media or other organisations, I would appreciate it. I guess you do know of some contacts whom we can tompang. Please help to follow up.

  12. Hi Sam #15,

I am sure we are all glad to see you come to life again. As a member, your offer to help distribute flyers during the membership drive at the Expo is already a big contribution to SilverHairsClub.

I look forward to seeing more members come forward to contribute their share as a member of the Club.

    Terence Seah

  13. Thanks Yew Kwong and contributors for the support.

Meantime, Susan CH Tan has volunteered to liaise with SPH organisers on the Expo event. We have secured a booth space. Susan is also helping to find funding options.

Thank you Susan for your help.

Meantime, I reiterate my call for members to support the cost of the booth at the Expo on Life matters, so as increase our memberhip.

    Terence Seah

  14. Terence,

Can I suggest a few ways for members to contribute:

1 Members who want to contribute a smaller sum, say $10-$20 each, but would like to find a few others to pool together and get someone to pledge their combined sum. Just like attendance at SHC events, very common, remember? One person will come out and say attending with so-and-so, etc, etc.

2 Members who dont have a group but may go solo and pledge $10-20 can email to the treasurer (to be appointed). After gathering a few names, the treasurer will post the combined sum on their behalf.

Will this work? Hope we will be able to get better response.

    1. Hi SusanT,

Sharing of the Expo booth is voluntary. The objective of securing a booth is to do a membership drive, allow groups to co-share the cost of the venue.

Your idea is perfectly fine. Members can contribute any amount, either solo or in small groups.

A treasurer will be appointed soon.

      Terence Seah

    1. Yes, it may take some time before we habe our membership drive the the Expo “Life matters” organised by SPH. Susan Tan will be discussing the details with the venue operators.

Meantime, I am pleased to announce that ChristinaCL Chan (Our walking leader) has volunteered to be the Treasurer in this fund raising event. Christina has been organising the monthly walk every month since the Club started.

Thank you ChristinaC for raising your hand.

A registration list will be set up soon.

      Terence Seah

  15. Good morning, Terence!

I was visualizing how SHC’s booth will be like. These are just some of my input and fellow members can also give theirs. At the end of the day, you can choose whichever ideas you feel works best for SHC’s membership drive.

    1) Representative (regular EOs) will be at the booth to
let the public know what are the respective activities
that are held regularly for members. To avoid
overcrowding the booth area, perhaps a time slot will be
    allocated to each EO.

    2) Posters decorating the booth will feature the past
activities participated by SHC members. The pictures
must be selected based on the spirit of fun exhibited
    in members’ expressions.

    3) The EOs who are into line dancing or other forms of
dancing might want to do a performance on the stage.

    4) Members to assist in booth on 2-3 hours duty. I guess
there are sufficient members who can do this.

That’s all for now. It’ll be good to hear from others what
suggestions they have to make this membership drive a
    mammoth success!

  16. Hi Terence

What’s LIFE MATTERS about? can we sell anything to get back the booth cost?
I’ll pop by either sat or sunday late afternoon to help in whatever necessary

  17. Yoo-hoo Terence, where are you, got my email? Lost in the mountain? You gotta sign the contract and send to SPH tomorrow.

Hi Frisna #24, found something in the web that best summarizes:

“Life Matters is an event that aims to promote both active ageing and fearless consideration of end-of-life matters.

Organised by SPH, the event is intended for individuals belonging to the silver generation who want to find out more about matters relating to health, wellness and interesting activities, while discovering what practical services are available to guide them and their families through the process of approaching the close of life’s journey.”

Google “Life Matters 2012” to look at how they did it last year, if you got time.

    Cheers!

  18. Thanks Susan. briefly read it and what came up more prominently is Nirvana the after life “residence”. still wonder if we can sell anything at the booth??

  19. Hi Frisna,

We are taking this booth to promote and increase our membership. The booth space is rather small. It is not likely we have the space to sell any physical things. If we take another booth, selling may be possible.

However, we are open to ideas. Let us know once you have something in mind.

    Terence Seah

  20. If we have the fund to have our own booth, good.

In case we dont, I suggest a lower cost back up plan which is just to print a very catching brochure for distribution
just for membership drive at the event.
Distribution point of these brochure can be at the organiser registration counter (if there is one or other exhibitionist booth, if they gracefully allow us)
Brochure dont take up a lot of space.
The reason I am suggesting this is
    a) there is a high chance we wont be able to raise enough fund for the booth and the membership form
    b) some of my business comtemporaries felt it is an overkill to have a S$4,588 booth just for recruiting members.
It does not create an impression that we are a non revenue
    generating organization.

I pledge S$50.00 as contribution whether booth or membership brcohure if the project does materailize.

I response only intermittently for SHC activities as there are too many website I need to access daily

    Regards
    Leon

  21. Hi Terence
If we can’t sell anything and paying $4000+ just to recruit members, I agree with Lau ES, it’s quite high. Better “tompang” someone or just distribute SHC leaflets by our volunteer or thru the organiser.

$4000+ can do many press insertions/adv if you really want to recruit members that way or use the money to organise a national event and advertise. Am sure we can recruit new members and get part or all the money back too

    1. Hi Frisna,

I sense you have something which you would like to sell at the Expo. Can you please speak up re your suggestion? I am not able to read what you are suggesting to sell.

On press insertions and advertisements, I too like the idea. If you can help to organise a national event to recruit members, we would be most happy to hear them. By the way, what do you mean by we can get part or all the money back?

  22. Terence

Logged on this morning and read this post.

I would like to contribute $100 and help at the booth. If I strike toto or big sweep, I will contribute more, hahaha.

    Great going!

  23. Hi Mary,

Thank you for the contribution to the booth. It’s our membership drive for the year.

And I wish you win a big Toto prize too.

    Terence Seah

  24. This is a call to members to support the membership drive by participating in the “Life Matters Expo”, organised by SPH. We will be taking up a booth, which will cost $4,588. The event will attract many seniors, our age group, and we would like to attract more of this age group, males and females, to join SHC.

Susan Tan is our coordinator with SPH and Daniel Chan is our media coordinator. We are working with various EOs to take up slots to promote their activities during the two day show on Sat/Sun 27/28 July 2013.

Increasing our club’s membership is key to the success of many of our activities. This is an opportunity to meet new and more friends. Perhaps, more varied activities.

I encourage you to support this event so that we can have new members. I look forward to your contribution. A Treasurer has been appointed, and will be in touch soon.

    Terence Seah

  25. Our next big event is the Club’s membership drive at Suntec Expo where we participates in SPH “Life Matters” Expo in July. The booth will cost us almost $5000.

We have not had a major membership program since 2005/6. This membership drive is important as it will provides members an opportunity to meet new and more members. We will also see an increase in the male members, and perhaps help to balance the sex ratio in the club. We will also have more activities, as the group of SilverHairs get bigger.

I hope you will sponsor and contribute to the cost of this booth. Whatever the amount, Christina Chan will take note, and start the collection process soon. I hope to see your support with this membership drive.
