Starting 2nd half of 2013, we shall use a committee style for SilverHairsClub

As my travel schedule gets tighter from the 2nd half of 2013, and as no member has volunteered to run and take over SHC, I have decided that we shall have a committee to manage SilverHairsClub.  I assume that most of the current guidelines and practices will continue to be the same.  But, I shall leave them to the committee and the head of this committee.

The SilverHairsClub.com as a website is owned by SilverHairs Enterprise Pte Ltd.  SHC will have its freedom to organise and manage as it is now.

After the Cabaret night and the Membership drive, I shall call a meeting for members who would like to be in this committee.  Those who wish to offer suggestions and ideas can also come.  However, it is likely the committee will comprise of do’ers.

The date for the meeting is set for Mon 5 Aug Fri 2 Aug 2013  1830 to 2100 hrs. (2.5 hrs). Place will be advised.

For those who are interested to be in the committee or to head the committee, please keep this date in your diary.  Anyone who likes to lead the meeting can also let me know.

  1. Dear Terence,
I believe it will be only effective to form Committee to park on the Web-portal with authorised permission from Silverhairs Enterprise Pte Ltd. Thus getting Mr. Seah Kim Seng ( as he is hold all the Issue & Paid up Capital of 50,000 share) as the Committee Chairman is pre-requisite.

  2. Hi Terence,

Am I correct to say …
Interesting to note that there is a possibility the future of Silverhairs Club is likely to merge with Silverhairs Enterprise Private Ltd with a committee running it’s (Silverhairs Club) day-to-day affairs. This may also set new directions for the club with this recently organized membership drive in Life Matters. Who knows, new blood with new ideas.

    1. Hi Hew Lee, and members,

As clarification, past polls have indicated strongly that members prefer SHC to run in its current format, to remain prvate, simple and unregistered. This was polled a few times over previous years. This was agreed at that time.

SilverHairs Enterprised Pte Ltd is run as a business entity, instead of a registered society. SHE owns the website SilverHairsClub.com.

The new committee will decide how SHC is to be run. But, it must takke charge. SHC committee or members ccan work with SHE, if projects are viable and finacially feasible. The new committee does not run SHE.

Members who have responded will meet this week for a first and one time time. They will set plans and format of the new committee. A head will be appointed. If you think you can contribute to the meeting, write to me today or tomorrow. All other members candiscuss their opinions, suggestions over this forum.

  3. Terence,

I just have an additional comment to make. I believe all existing Silverhairs Club members including me would like to know the make up of key personnel in Silverhairs Enterprise Pte Ltd. (a registered company) and the coming appointment of new committee members for the Silverhairs Club (an unregistered private club).

    1. Hi everybody,

You may make your suggestions, but effectively, I would like the new committee set the tone. I would prefer not to prejudge what the committee has in mind and plan to do. If you feel strongly about certain directions, this is your change to help make the change.

For those who have expressed coming, see you soon.

  4. From mid this year, I will be spending more time out of Singapore; and lesser time to follow up on SHC activities. You know I have announced that I will make all efforts to have a committee run the SilverHairsClub. Members who have responded will be meeting this week.

Since the announcement, I have received a number of emails and Whatsapps from members who have expressed their thoughts.;. I prefer more communications to be done on the forum but many members prefer to try direct because they feel that maybe their voices would be heard. Since this is an important and critical change, I would share with you what has come in, even though I may not act on the suggestions.

    1. Not, one but a few members expressed that a committee is likely to slow down decisions. The loud ones will not consider the quieter ones. They prefer one head, whoever he/she, may be, and he/she makes the decision.

    2. Many or I would say the bulk of the feedback insist that I should stay on as the head of SilverHairsClub as they do not mind me being out of Singapore, and as this is a virtual club. I can say that even as a virtual vlub, SilverHairsClub is still very time intensive. I would like to see someone who has the energy and the time. This month, i will be out of Singapore for 3 good weeks. Someone wrote me and say in my position, there is little things to do, as I have many assistants.

    3. One 2-year old female member asks that the head of the committee be a male, so that the Club will not be dominated with females.

There are other comments; but I would not highlight them.

The meeting will be held soon this week. If you have any opinion before the meeting, please share them here.

  6. As of today, we will have 7 members who will be attending the Brainstorm meeting on Fri 2nd Aug. It appears nobody else is able to attend or is not interested. Meeting starts at 6.30 pm sharp, as I need to leave early the following morning for Hong Kong. See you soon.

  7. SilverHairsClub on Facebook has many members. However, we have not planned to energise it for a few years. We are now ready to open SilverHairsClub on Facebook to the public and members.

I am looking for someone to manage SilverHairsClub on Facebook. Comments on Facebook will be more liberal and not moderated. However, it will still run under the same taboos especially politics, race and religion, sex, direct selling and MLM.

If you are familiar with SilverHairsClub and its culture, and would like to run SilverHairsClub on Facebook, do let me know. You can also email me.

  8. Hi everybody,

This evening, we had a meeting to brainstorm on a committee to run and manage SilverHairsClub. Those who have responded to participate in this meeting, as well as those who have contributed their opinions have expressed broad support for a committee. As such, we shall plan ahead to have a committee. In principle, the meeting also supported having someone to head this committee, after 6 months of operations. Thank you to the members who have come to the meeting as well as those who have fedback their views.

The taboos of the club remain and will continue to be maintained under the new committee. The committee is not allowed to shut down the club or the website.

This new committee is likely to have between 5-10 members. The Club committee has not been appointed yet.

Under the new committee, the current practice of having EOs and ECs shall continue. The committee shall also be responsible for ensuring that the contents of the forum are kept within the Club taboos. The roles of the committee members shall be announced in about one week’s time. Major decisions concerning SHC or major events will be decided by the SHC committee.

Please note that SilverHairsClub.com is owned by SilverHairs Enterprise Pte Ltd, and has only one shareholder. The committee does not own or manage SilverHairs Enterprise.

  9. Now, that the brainstorm committee has supported the idea of a committee to manage SilverHairsClub, I have itemised the roles which will be offered to committee members. If you have some roles that you think is important, and I miss out, let me know.

Some basic understanding. I shall let the committee manage the Club in general. At the same time, each member has a specific role.

    Criteria:
    1. Fast response among members is not expected, but all members must have a working Whatsapp account.

    2. The entire committee (odd number) will report to a head, which will be selected and agreed from within the committee, starting 1 Feb 2014. In the meantime, the committee reports to Terence Seah. If the committee agrees to take over by Dec 2013, the committee can decide the person, and I can then hand the the work over to the committee.

    3. As a guide, each committee member has a role to play, may or can discuss with other committee members, but is finally responsible for the decision and action.

    4. There will be no need to meet physically, but discussions can be held over Whatsapp. Each member takes turn to hold a meeting monthly. Feasible or not, depends on your time too.

    5. In principle, committee members must be familiar with what’s in the Club. All notes of meeting must be placed in the Club’s forum, tagged as PRIVATE and password protected. Individual members cannot read these post.

    6. Tenure: 2 years, and renewable.

Please respond by. 15 Aug. After this date, I shall announce the roles of each committee member.

Members interested to manage these roles in the committee, plse let me know. Thank you.

    Roles of committee members:

    1. Website readership role:
    * To promote and increase SilverHairsClub.com readership.

    2. Event Organisers EO Role:
    * To increase the “One member, one EO activity” target.

    3. Event Coordinator EC Role:
    * To increase EC activities, ie members sharing their interests and hobbies with other SHC members.

    4. Corporate membership Role:
    * To promote Corporate membership to companies and institutions with an interest to support SilverHairs activities and needs in Singapore.

    5. Non-active members role:
    * To increase activity participation from non-active members.

    6. Finance Role:
    * To develop projects and schemes to make SilverHairsClub a self financing social group.

    7. Forum content Role:
    * To approve, moderate and resolve content of the SilverHairsClub website, based on current guidelines.

  10. Dear members,

As of today, 4 members have offered to run and manage SilverHairsClub. I am targetting a team of 7 members.

The Brainstorm group has suggested 6 months for the committee to elect a head, and i have agreed.

Role 7 has been volunteered by one member, and i have agreed too.

Whatever the number, the new committee starts 15 Aug 2013.

After this date, the committee runs the show.

    Terence Seah

    1. Thank you to the more than 10 members who have written to me about handing the Club to a committee to manage and to bring SHC to the next level. The feedback varies from concerns to disagreements and also to allow the status quo to continue.

For various reasons which i have explained over the last two years, we have invited the nembership to participate in the running. However, the response has been cool and non-commital. Added to the fact, I have little time in Singapore. I have slowly build up the next strategy, and this is the direction of a SHC committee. I am determined to give this a chance for it to work. Thus, I am not able to accept many of the suggestions from you via private email. I shall give the members who have the guts and time to contribute to SHC.

Currently, 5 names have volunteered, and each has a role to play, towards the management of the Club.

For members who are concerned, the current roles of EOs and ECs will continue with similar mode of operation.

All announcements will be made after the 15 Aug 2013. If you feel you can contribute as a committee member, plse let me know.

      Terence Seah

  11. I like to make an announcement re the management and operations of the SilverHairsClub.com.

    1. The purpose of having a committee to run and drive SilverHairsClub is to increase creativity and a broader experience for SilverHairsClub members.

    2. The other purpose which has become more critical is I have lesser time in Singapore, thus making me ineffective in running the club and participating in many of its activities.

    3. After the brainstorm session, we have created 7 roles for SilverHairsClub members who are in the committee. 4 of these roles have been taken up. Two others are still pending.

    4. The roles of each of the committee members. I shall expand on the roles in the coming days.

    A. Website readership role: Geraldine Ting.
    * To promote and increase SilverHairsClub.com readership.

    B. Event Organisers EO Role: Dolly Lim
    * To increase the “One member, one EO activity” target.

    C. Event Coordinator EC Role: Not taken up yet.
    * To increase EC activities, ie members sharing their interests and hobbies with other SHC members.

    D. Corporate membership Role: Not taken up yet.
    * To promote Corporate membership to companies and institutions with an interest to support SilverHairs activities and needs in Singapore.

    E. Non-active members role: ChristinaCL Chan
    * To increase activity participation from non-active members.

    F. Finance Role: Not taken up yet.
    * To develop projects and schemes to make SilverHairsClub a self financing social group.

    G. Forum content Role: Lily Ho
    * To approve, moderate and resolve content of the SilverHairsClub website, based on current guidelines.

Being in the committee takes up time, effort and the challenge of doing a good job. I know many members support the committee members, yet at the same time, many are also critical of some of the committee members.

My stand is clear. The transition to a committee has to go on. They have volunteered, and I have accepted. I shall therefore support their ideas, plans and decisions. Members who wish to steer the Club and would like to be in the committee can write to me via email or whatsapp.

The Club shall still listen to the views and opinions of members, but finally, the committee and the responsible Role member makes the final decision. I hope all members will work with the committee to make SilverHairsClub vibrant and the Club for Seniors in Singapore.

    5. There is another person whom I have mentioned from time to time. Yew Kwong shall hold the keys to SilverHairsClub.com, should something happens to me. He will have full access to the Club, access to our domain name, access to the hosting company, passwords and the right to close or shut SILVERHAIRSCLUB, plus access to all membership details.

Yew Kwong shall not sit on the committee, as this is not an operational role.

    6. There are other portfolios which I shall still keep for now. They are Paper Clips, Men’s night and the Business Round table.

    7. As agreed at the Brainstorm session, the committee will select a Head of the committee at the end of 6 months ie by 15 Feb 2013.
Meantime, I shall still head this committee.

    Yeah, have fun everybody.

    Terence Seah

  12. Hi Peter,
Welcome to SHC… Wow, you are the 1st 2 come forward with a new activity since Committee was formed… Very good…

Any kind of activity proposal is always welcome.. and I would suggest that you start a new post to be EO for this activity. BTW, can tell briefly tell us what kind of activity you are suggesting? .

    Cheers… Dolly

  13. Dear Dolly
Thanks for your reply. My activity is called “the Ministry of Laughs” (Laughter-the Best Medicine sessions), It’s rather lengthy – it has to be because of the relevancy of info flow. can i post it here for you to create a new post for me separately? as i can’t find any button at this website that say “create a new posting” or you can give me your email? i will send the content and you can evaluate it.
    thanks and regards,
    peter tan

    Cheers

  15. Last evening, the SHC committee has its regular monthly meeting. It was a serious discussion, and we discussed how effective the committee was since it started in Aug 2013.

The unanimous view was that the roles of the committee were redundant, as the Event Organisers (EOs) and Event Coordinators (ECs) are already doing a good job. At the same time, many subgroups have already been formed, and no longer need a committee to manage them.

The committee still has one more month to go. Before we firm up a decision, I like to ask members for your opinion.

    Terence Seah

  16. Terence

    Your comment confused me.

To my understanding, the function of the committee is to replace you and not the EO and EC. The performance of the EO, EC and the subgroups should not affect the existence of the committee unless you have another plan in you mind.

    Am my understanding wrong? Confused!

    1. Hi AndrewY,

I have not thought of how to move forward yet. Maybe, I shall enjoy my CNY festivities first. I do like to hear from other members too.

Meantime, to help you with an understanding of the background, please read through this post and the background to the committee.

      Terence Seah

  17. Hi Terence, since you ask for opinion, here it is.
Pardon me if it does not sound nice. Sincere words are not sweet and vice versa.

I gave you my opinion (via email) before the committee was formed. I told you that it was not practical to assign a role to each committee member. (See comment above dated 8 Aug 2013). In stark reality, what do you expect them to do?

In theory, more people provide more energy and synergy to a project. In practice however, particularly in volunteer work, people do not want to be encumbered with too many regulations and obligations.

For example, an event organiser (an adult of more than 45 years old) looking for participants is not allowed to share his email address and mobile phone number even if he does not mind. He is not allowed to “advertise” the names of companies, sponsors, partners and non-member helpers. For all intent and purpose, how then can an EO widen his reach and resources?

With all the restrictions, how can a committee member, tasked to improve the situation, perform her role effectively?

When the “minefield” becomes dense, volunteers will share their indulgence somewhere else, where life is more unrestrained. I am not sure whether this has indeed happened in our Club, but if it does; before we brand any “deserter” as disloyal, we ought to examine why it has happened.

Let’s hope the HORSE will trample all Draconian Rules to the ground.
    ?????????

    1. Hi DanielC,
I am not sure that SHC implements draconian rules. Our rules were already in place before the member joins the Club.

EOs and ECs have full jurisdiction over their activities. I like to invite you to clarify your otherwise observations. Dont have to worry about raising feathers.

      Terence Seah

  18. Hi Terence, I was busy the last 2 days – CNY duties etc. On CNY eve, I was at another forum site, debating political and social matters when I switched to SHC. Sorry about the emotion then, and hence the rather inappropriate word.

It is not true that “EOs and ECs have full jurisdiction over their activities”. Kindly read my full text above, besides the word “Draconian”. Of course it is “caveat emptor” when members choose to join. Could this be the reason why there are so many members and so few EOs and ECs? Not sure but I am sure we want to study and improve the situation. Remaining status quo is not the best way moving forward.

    1. Hi DanielC,

When you are ready to be an EO for an event for members, this would be great. I look forward to your initiative for the New Year. Have fun at the other forums.

      Terence Seah

  19. No Terence, I am not ready to be an EO, just like the thousands of members out there. But unlike them, I respond to your call on Jan 29, quote, “. The committee still has one more month to go. Before we firm up a decision, I like to ask members for your opinion”.

I will certainly do my part when I judge the condition to be more favourable, bearing in my mind what I have had stated on Jan 30.

    Regards
