SHC Fishing kakis registration

This is just the beginning.  Nobody has step forward to say he/she is going fishing.  But, never mind,  let’s have a show of hands.  How many of you are interested in going fishing?  I mean catching fish in a pond, near the shore or deep sea.

Please raise your hands.  We should compile a list first.  Leaders or diehard fisherman, watch this list, and do volunteer to organise something for the group.

  1. Aiyah Terence (sigh), – Why are you always in such a hurry.? Caroline is not in office and so have not read the comments yet. May be Susan and Daniel also have not read it. Can’t we wait just a little to see if they response first meh? You so very the kancheon leh.!

  2. Hi Lily,

Yes, yes, really too kancheon and excited. I also luv fishing, but havent learn how to tie a hook. Next time, I shall be less kancheon.

    Terence Seah

  3. Dont worry Terence. If nobody goes fishing with you, I’ll take you to the jurong fishing port to buy up all the wholesalers there and on yr lucky day you might find a mermaid in 1 of the baskets.

  4. How about going to kelong overnight to fish, cook the fish caught.
Provided someone volunteers to remove the fish from the hook. I cannot do it seeing the fish struggling in pain.
Unless you have another reason for fishing – for novelty and throw the fish back to the sea.

  5. Both hands liftd up…can see?

    I am a die hard enthuasiast.Sarted fishing since I was 10
    years old.
Have been on many trips out at sea.Did some fishing last 2 days at Seletar, caught nothing,as usual….:)
My best fishing experience was in Perth, anywhere you go there are fishes.
Looking fwd to a fishing trip with you guys & ladies.

    cheers!!

  6. Yes, my hands are up too!

I am another die hard fishing gal. Have been fishing for a long time in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Mauritius and now in Perth. I look forward to fishing with any SHC fishing kakis coming to Perth…maybe after the wildflowers?

    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  7. Hi Terence

I am interested. Just like to try for fun, ever try in Elias Fishing Pong, Lim Chu Kang when I was young. Looking forward to Kelong fishing & stay also.

  8. Daniel

Terence and I were hoping that you will volunteer to organise this event either singly or jointly with Susan Chang and Caroline Gee (Pls see comments in Caroline Gee’s profile). Seems like you guys know quite a bit about fishing to take the lead. How about it huh?

  9. Hi Lily,

Ok will look up my contacts and see what I can come up with….:))
Btw need to know how many are keen, ‘cos there are few places around sg where we can spend few hrs having a picnic cum fishing.
Just like Terrence always say…..those in favour please raise yr hands..:))

    cheers…

  10. Hi,

This is just to give you all a picture of what a trip to a kelong off the coast of M’ysia is like.

I have been to a kelong off Mersing. I am not trying to be discouraging, but it was disappointing.
Though, it is equipped with dorms for sleeping, go with insecticide spray or you’ll end up with sandfly bites which is very itchy.
Fishing is very poor. The largest fish caught was 3-4 inches long max.. No one caught anything bigger than that in the 1 week we were there. And even when a boat took some out to deeper waters, the result was hardly worth the fare paid.

The kelong sanitary facilities were very poor. Everything..toothpaste,soap waste etc.. goes into the sea which was disgusting considering that it could be possible for someone to have diarrhoea as the kitchen was swarmed with flies. No wonder the fish kept away!

Some SHC members may know of better kelongs. Boat trips to such place is enchanting and the view may be great.

However going deepsea fishing is much better but, of course, it can cater to a small group only. And costs more.

  11. Veron(Wong), hahaha, if you hadnt baited the fish, why wd it be on the hook struggling in pain leh? So, maybe better to remove the hook from the line than to remove the fish from the hook?

Daniel, you dont hv to lift yr hands for me to see……..you hadnt shaven since puberty and yr hair stretches longer than princess di’s wedding gown did.

Deepsea fishing is excellent and perhaps Terence can start building the next ark, preferably with a gym in it for the health conscious, a mahjong room for the mj queens and not least, a bowling alley for benson & hedges.

  12. I am interested in fishing mostly done pond fishing – at Pasir Ris at the sure-catch pond. If deep-sea, it should not be a problem. Hope to land a big Sail-fish which I have seen on TV show. Count me in. Thanks
    Jeffrey

  13. Hi Terence,

I agree with Daniel. Great to have a fishing cum picnic trip. Used to do that when we were children. Waiting for the catch and having a bite. Fishing requires lots of patience.

Please include me in your list.

  14. Hi Daniel,

I have been to Batam Fishing kelong many times, many years ago. I like it very much , the kelong was very clean and we get to eat the fresh fish after we caught them. At night the sea wave (lullaby) all of us to a good night sleep. Can play Mahjong at night also…I don’t mind go for an overnight stay at the kelong out in the open sea.

    Ah Nee

  15. Agree with Ah Nee, I’ve had very good kelong experience too. Clean room with clean attached shower/toilet with running water, no moizzy, KTV and mahjong rooms, 3 delicious & fresh seafood meals, etc. In fact, overly commercialised compared to my other kelong experience when I was a teenager.

Terence, – I think you should assign this post to Daniel, so that he can keep track of people who register their interest here.

    Daniel, – please include me.

  16. Yeh! I ‘d been to Kelongs a couple of times many years ago wif diff gps of frenz. However, they ‘r all quite a disappointments. Both the Kelong were filthy n poor sanitry. No clean water to brush yr teeth! 2 many dogs ard 4 comfort. They’r either had mahjong or karaokes 4 u 2 enjoy. However, BBQ were horrible. They half cooked curry chicken wings ready 4 U to BBQ !Wish 2 go 2 a better one than sleeping on floor wif out mattress at all!

  17. Seems like those reporting horror experiences at kelongs went thry hell no better than the 530 rescued from brick kilns ……….heeeeeee, Daniel, does he not look like that foreman?

  18. Hi Daniel,

My experience staying in the kelongs and floating farms off Pulau Ubin, kelongs at Penyambong and Riao Islands have been very enjoyable. Some of them have mattresses but I prefer to sleep on the floor and feel the cool air from the sea. Catching and cooking the squids, prawns and fish for supper has been a wonderful experience. Plan your trips during the neap tides (avoid 1st and 15th day of the lunar month where the current is too strong).

    Mary Lee (from Perth)

  19. Wow…..we sure have a good number of fishing enthusiast.

Thank you Terence for assigning me the task of organising…:))
I would like to request those of you who have been to such kelong trip in Batam to pass me the number.

I went to this kelong on Tg Pinang and had a good time.
What do you think of it?

    http://sg.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/yadkca8/album?.dir=b6c7

  20. So much interest in kelong and fishing.

Would people consider a modern kelong for RV? We could get one for a song compare to other seaview homes at home.
Don’t have to be ricketty coconut piles. It could be an ultra modern, eco-floating village. Modern toilets, jacuzzi, infinity pool and broadband. Towable with sonar finders. We’ll go to the fish, if fish doesn’t come to us.

    Try this for size.
    http://www.westbayfloathomes.ca/float_home_designs.htm

Enblocers dream. No replacement land cost. Keep your millions. Yippee!!!!

Imagine all the things you can do. Tow to boat quay and beat the CBD charge. We can beat the system!

Be sour grapes. Anchor in front of The Sail at Cliiford Pier. Demand $1m to sail away and restore their $5 m view.

Fish everyday. Crayfish lunches and lobster thermidor dinners. Life can be floating good.

  21. Hi Daniel,

I am looking forward to a Kelong trip. Can’t resist having a ikan merah at the end of the line.

This Post has been assigned to you. Please feel free to change it. Anything goes. Just let your ideas run.

    Terence Seah

  22. Hi Daniel,

This place you mentioned, more like a holiday Chalet than a kelong. I try to find out the contact for Batam Kelong that I went to many years ago. I lost the contact after my father-in-law passed away as the owner of this kelong was my father-in-law’s buddy. This kelong has a very clean toilet with spring and cool water for bathing and washing. No other activities except fishing, Karaoke, Mahjong, playing “black Jack” and eating & eating….The kelong has individual rooms with mattress on the floor.

But if I can’t get the contact, I don’t mind try this place you mentioned lor.

    Ah Nee

  23. Hey Daniel,

Count me in if it is a kelong trip as there will be other things to do (mahjong, karaoke) instead of waiting impatiently for the fish (if any) to bite. Freshly caught sotong ‘panggang with sambal’ hmmm……sweet and succulent….need I say more?

  24. Gourd-damned with kelongs………..it has to be a kelong for mexico to beat brazil 2-0, and Ecuado (finalist in the last world cup) to lose 3-2 after leading chile 2-1 at half-time.

Better start building our own kelongs b4 copa america ends early next mth…….the catch can still be good and with the money made, we can go on a kelong hopping as 2nd choice and a luxury yacht bigger & better than sea shaw or the rabbit or the sultan’s aminah……………or even qe 2 as the first choice.

  25. Hi Daniel, – My kelong experience was booked yrs ago thru friends of friends, so unable to obtain further info. Whichever kelong you choose will be ok with me.

Tim Liu, – You are cluttering the post with irrelevant comments.

  26. Lily Ho, you can kelong I cant kelong so?

So long lor…………………. I’ll go play baylong with Terence, tape worms on Kenneth and lie on longkangs with Ben’s son….you dont follow hor.

  27. Hi Daniel,

Pls put my name down for this activity. I volunteer to help out for this.
Please let me know what I can do. Actually, so pai seh. I only know how to fish but I dont know how to tie a hook because I either buy the ready ones or my husband did them for me so I never found the need to learn he he.

So do you still think you want me as assistant ha ha!

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  28. Hi Caroline,

Sure why not….like the saying goes ”many hands make light work”.

Well I myself use to buy the ready tied ones too until I realised how much profit they were making. Now I tie them myself, quite simple actually.

I am still trying to get the contact from my cousin, but apparently he is away in the Phillipines. Will wait for his return…..please bear with me those who have expresed interest.

    kam siah

    Daniel

  29. Okey Dokey Daniel. I am very patient thats why I qualify to do fishing.

Actually, with your reference to Posting #10, I enjoy this fishing cum picnic thing. We can start by having this. I am game for anything.

If many members enjoy this, especially for first timers, we can then arrange for something more adventurous. Just a suggestion.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  30. Yes Caroline, we are in the same boat…. I don’t know how to tie a knot or hook, as my husband will help me do it. I remembered the first time I caught a fish, I just hold onto the line and wait until someone help me to get the fish out of the hook.

  31. Hi Sue & Caroline, – lucky you.! That’s the kind of fishing I’d like to do. “Just hold on to the fishing rod/line” and let someone else do the dirty work. Shiok huh?

And since I don’t have anyone to do that for me, I think I’ll play mahjong at the kelong instead of fishing, that is, if Dolly is coming along. No news from her, so far huh?

Aey Dolly, – going or not? I know, no dates yet,! Sign up first lah.! If date cannot then cancel lor!

  32. ha.ha.. lily, I’ve learnt to do some “dirty” job myself nowadays, as I can’t always depend on him. He needs to enjoy his fishing too. :)
If I have a big one, then bo bian lah. Small fish, aiyah, sep-sep-sui, I will do it myself, only afraid when the fish is struggling.

Anyway, good to hv you & Dolly’s company. If no fish, then we can play MJ together. Andrew, Oi Cheng, YK, Renee – what are you waiting for ??

  33. Aiyoh Susan
You very bad hoh! Every activity I see, I also “sum yok yok” but then hoh.. have to be selective at least for the next few months. Those already committed, bo bien.
I really miss being with all of you.
Daniel, Can I put my name down and if I can’t then back out?

  34. Hi Lily,

I know what you mean. Yah. When I catch the fish, I just stand there and then my husband takes the hook out from the fish. I feel very “girlie” when the fish wriggle. Also, He will hook the bait for me cos I am very afraid of the worms or live prawns.
But now, I am in the same boat as you, no pun intended so I have to wait and see if any gallant hero will come and help me. Otherwise, just watch people fish lor.

Susan, you so lucky still have your lau heelo to help you when needed.

Hi Mary, you are so lucky to go fishing in Australia. Someday, if the opportunity comes up, I would love to go down under and hopefully, you can make time to take me fishing. Till then, I will wait patiently.
Good luck on your fishing trip with your grandson.

    Warmest Regards
    Caroline Gee

  35. wahpiangz Oi Cheng, sum yok yok, must hunk tung mah.. chope chope first la and if date confirmed not ok, until then cancel lor. Rather now gian gian and lau chwee luan oli lor… hehehehe

  36. Hi Oi Cheng

Daniel only want a show of hands for the time being to see how the response. So, you can still put your hands up. If time and date permit then go lor.

We hope to see you too in the next activity.

    Cheerio

  37. Hi Daniel, count me in to re-learnt the art of fishing. Had been eating more shashimi than fishing and this skill should help me to cut down my eating cost. Teowchew “Hea Tow Loh” anyone over and above raw fish?

  38. Hi Daniel,
Perhaps you shd list down the name list of those interested so far so that you can roughly gauge the headcount lor… How abt this har??

  39. Hi Daniel

Thanks for the link on Hotboy Kelong. Around Sibu Island there are quite a number of kelongs. The one I hv been to is called “Ah Yu” kelong. Haven’t tried HotBoy Kelong. Activities and rates in your quotation are thereabout the same as Ah Yu. I don’t mind to try out this kelong if you are organising. Point to note, though, from our experience, Sat. & Sun are always crowded, so depart on Friday and coming back on Sat. preferred.

    Thanks,
    Susan

  40. Hi Susan,

I used to fish at “Ah Yu” Kelong in the 90s with my brother and his colleagues who were once very keen. I caught a 18kg barracuda as tall as me and the guys had hard time fighting with fish for more than half an hour b4 pulling up. Till now, I still dun noe how to tie hooks bcos the guys prepared everything for me. I would like to join if time permits.

    veronlee

  41. Wow Veron, finally I found another female angler.. not bad to land a 18kg barracuda huh ? You must be expert lor. It’s definitely hard fight but a good one. When there are season for kunning or seklah… it’s more interesting. Just buy those ready made seklah hooks that comes with a feather and you can fish as many as 3 or 4 one time. It’s really fun.

I have not been to Ah Yu’s kelong for quite a while but my husband told me they have expanded and much bigger now.

Daniel, pls count me in for Hotboy kelong rather than the Sunplanner. Pls include my husband if you are planning to go on a Friday. Thks.

Looking forward to fishing with you guys.

    Cheerio,
    Susan

  42. Hi Susan

I’m no expert but was juz lucky on that night happened to be a team competition among us. My team won bcos I got the 18kg fish. My brother’s colleagues were experts and I used to call them “fishermen” teachers. In order to get barracuda, u need to have a suitable rod and parang fish as baits. I talk like expert hor! don’t even noe how 2 tie hooks leh?

    Pls include me, Daniel. Thanks!

    veronlee

  43. Hi friends,

Count me in . Had been to kelongs with friends but never for fishing. Just sit there idling, dreaming and enjoying the sea breeze to destress.

    Julie

  44. Hi Daniel

Never been fishing but think it should be relaxing to enjoy sea breeze and watch sunrise. Any one been to Pangkor Laut Island in Malaysia?
    Count us in.

    Eyvonne Chew and Josephine Yap

  45. Hi Yvonne and Josephine,

I have been to Pangkor Island. On a 10-day round trip Spore to Hatyai by car, I stayed at Pangkor Island, Perak for 2 days. Took the ferry from Lumut. Went around the island on motorbike to savour local durians and ice-ball. Lots of yummy seafood, fishing villages, unspoilt beaches and beautiful sunset. Another place I would recommend is Port Klang (40km from KL) – to watch fire-flies and makan bak-kut-teh, then adjourn to Ketam island (everything on stilts) for crabs!

    Mary from Perth

  46. another sum very yok very gian le, chope chope first hor. if confirmed date not ok, then cancel.
I cant tie the knot, cant unhook the fish only hold line, got fish also cant feel hor hahahhaa yah was at a kelong long time ago. Whatever was caught was cooked the same evening by the kelong owner for us to feast! boy what a feast….no sauce, no chilli yet yummy!

    Eyvonne & Josephine:
Pangkor Island is worth a visit if you intend to relac, do nothing! Dare to ride a motorbike! you are licensed to ride one…no legal license required and it is the best way to move around the island.

    Cheerio!
    Christina Chan

  47. Dear Daniel,
Keen to join but wat tx & date???

As for fishing, when goin, wat tx & venue?? Are we planning to stay overnite? If timing is suitable, my 4 friends (all SHC members) will join me in this activity. Look forward to more news on the fishing event. Cheers :)

  48. He he…so sorry, forgot to mention that it is during the day as I am semi retired.

I usually go in the daytime to various places to try. Have not been to East Coat Park for a long time now, so was wondering if there are kaki’s who are semi retired too to join me during the weekdays.

It will be nice to camp ove at Pulau Ubin for an overnight fishing trip….anyone keen

    Daniel

  49. Hi Daniel

There is a walking and cycling event on Pulau Ubin next month. Maybe fishing can be included to make it a 3-in-1 event.

    Oh no, mozzies again…

    Joy

    Pearlynn Tan

  53. Hi Daniel, count me in for the fishing trip. The last time I went fishing was off the coast of Pasir Panjang at midnight. I caught a spike fish, got a plier and pull out the two spike from the fish. Halfway through the night I gave a loud yell and found that I actually sat on one of the spike which went through mu backside. I almost fainted.

  54. Good day Terence, I have forgotton my password to SHC but apparently I am able to view your website. As for the forthcoming fishing trip as mentioned to me by Dennis Wee and wife, myself and wife would like to go next year in April 2007. Please book me for 2 places and let me know the charges later. Please confirm by return email to “paullp@singnet.com.sg”or call me. Tks and regards/Paul Leong

  55. Hi, Daniel:

Please count me and my wife (also an SHCian) in for the kelong trip.

As for fishing at East Coast Park or walking/cycling/recce trips to Pulau Ubin, please call me when you are going. I am retired, and frequent ECP and Pulau Ubin regularly.

    Ron Koh

  56. Hi Paul L,

no worries about an incorrect password. As you are able to write a comment, it means your password is correct.

For fishing, please do follow up closely as we work out the fishing trip details to a kelong in April. Cheers.

    Terence
