Party with Capt. Beer

First of all let me introduce Capt. Beer.  He is none other than Kaushal, a SilverHairs Clubber, who has turned around from being Master Mariner to Master Brewer in year 2004, when Singapore made it legal to ‘Brew Your Own Beer’.  Not only that, he is a good cook as well.  That is what he thinks but wait!  He is willing to let you decide, if he is in fact a good cook or not.

He would therefore like to host a party with Capt. Beer at his residence (16 Lichfield Road, Serangoon Garden, Near Chomp Chomp Hawker Centre) on Aug. 11, 2007 (Sat) at 5.30 PM*.  The healthy menu is likely to be made of a Starter, Sweet & Sour Chicken Wings, Mutton Biryani, Chicken Curry, Lightly Fried Plain Rice, Salad & Yoghurt.  To go with it, there will be home-made Dark Malt Beer (Light & Strong and it is FREE) and non-carbonated soft drink.  The charge is S$15.00 per SiverHairs Clubber.  Due to space constraint, the party is limited to the first 20 Clubbers***. In summary:-

  1. Event: Beer & Dine with Capt Beer
  2. Date & Time: 12th August 2007(Sunday) @ 5.30 pm**
  3. Venue: 16 Lichfield Road, Serangoon Garden

Menu*: Starter, Sweet & Sour Chicken, Mutton Biryani, Chicken Curry, Lightly Fried Plain Rice, Salad & Yoghurt plus home-made Dark All Malt Beer (Light & Strong). Those interested are requested to contact and register with Capt. Beer by email (rafflesmarine@yahoo.com.sg) and you will obtain more information from him.

Closing Date for registration is Aug. 04,2007: It’s Housefull now.  Thank you.

Capt. Beer is very excited and looking forward to meet some of you on Aug. 11, 2007.

Cheers!

Kaushal (SRI)

*I will include a light spicy dish for those, who are vegetarian.  I may also include Deep Fried & Plain Indian (wholemeal) Bread, called Puri.  Any help during the party would be very welcome.

**By now, you all know that Edwin, our Music Man is coming alongwith his instruments on Aug. 12, 2007 (Sunday).  As others have suggested, the party is therefore re-schedule to Aug. 12.   I am now looking forward to see the following Clubbers on the party day:

1.     Dennis Wee

2.     Wendy Goh

3.     Patrick Yeo

4.     Ann Lim

5.     Tim Liu

To those, who could not be accomodated this time due to space constraint, I would say, there may be another one next month.

  1. Captain, a day has passed but the first taker has yet to show up. Maybe, few in SHC are beer drinkers ?

Terence can tell you how lousy a lager-licker I am so while I like your idea, I am afraid I cant support you here.

Lichfield is just a walk away from the s’goon gdn sports club so cd you be another of my football kakis in the early 70s to hv played alongside the 3 bayi brothers, andy yeo, eddy, melvin the humped goalie…and if so, we cd come together again to re-live those golden years.

    Cheers…………..

  2. Dennis, I aint a beer drinker but pleased if you wd support the captain.

Will join you to cheer yr mate whatever for if you dont find me intruding into yr private life, hehe…….no problem here.

    tim

  3. Hi Tim,

First of all, let me thank you for the comment. And at the same time, pls. allow me to inform you that “Party with Capt. Beer” is all about getting together socially and enjoying it with Home Made Food and a glass or two of either Fresh All Malt Beer or soft drink or plain water. So one does not have to be beer lover to enjoy the evening with other SHClubbers! I am sure that every one loves healthy and tasty food. I am just trying to provide that, good food, good drinks, good setting and good company to enjoy the evening at my place. What more one could ask for?
I have just started brewing a Light All Malt Beer (2% Alcohol), hope it to be ready just in time for the party and it is FREE. I will prepare non-carbonated soft drink on the day itself alongwith the food.
Hope, you will not miss such an opportunity.

    Kaushal

P.S. This is a second time, I am holding such party for SHClubbers.

  4. Hi Kaushal,

I would love to joint you for a drink but saturdays evenings are out for me.I have to play music for other club socials.I may consider playing some music at your next party i.e. if timing is right and you have the room for SHC social dancing fans.

    Regards & best wishes,
    Edwin Chen

  5. Hi Edwin,

    Thanks your email.
In order to accomodate your talent for the benefit of SHClubbers, I will try to change the date to Aug. 12, 2007 if signed on SHClubbers agrees to it.
I can always creat a dancing floor by shifting sofas outdoor then we will have a clear space of 18′ by 24′. Is it big enough for SHDancers?
    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  6. Hi Kaushal,

My goodness, Kaushal! Please don’t go about changing the date because of me! I am not sure about the dimension of your make shift dance floor as I really don’t know the requirements of SHC party goers. But one thing is for sure,I have seen some of the lady SHC members in action recently, they can really gyrate and float!

By the way, I am a “one man band” for all oldies music. All I need is a floor space of one dining table to set my keyboards and amplifier etc.and hey presto! Elvis,Cliff Richard etc.comes alive!! By way, I need transportation too!

    Regards and happy partying!
    Edwin Chen

  7. Hi Gingko, Susan, Ai Nee, Molly, Caroline and other food lovers and beer drinkers or learners( Andrew), Ron Lai , Robert & wifes .
Just to recommend those who have not taken advantage of Cpt Beer’s kind hospitality to cater especially to SHC members for a night of good NOrth Indian food and home made Brew beer (fresh live beer ) to his home for a nice quiet evening. Hopefully as promised by our good friend, Edwin, will marinade (serenade) all of you with his enchanting music as well, while you discover and enjoy North Indian cuisine and beer. Good also to tell him if you want it rather hot and spicy, same for the beer , there can be different flavours and you will learn more about beer.

A few of us have enjoyed Cpt Beer’s hospitality and i would say for $15 for such an evening with good authentic (uique) food , beer and music (hopefully) , SHC members should take this as a good exclusive offer.

Even going for a pot luck may cost you more in time preparation, cost also not to mention the headache to decide what will be enough. There is a cost to everything ever so now, as the GST hike constantly remindes us that never take anything for granted of expect it to be free , especially also from friends of SHC for whatever little things they do for you.

It is always good to remember to say thank you and not take anything for granted, and return in kind ensures more of such gatherings and fun will be readily accepted by others to act as host for such events.

So for a night of good enjoyment to CPT Beer’s house for wine, food and music, we should appreciate and hope that it can become a frequent affair. I had to wait about 6 months before I finally managed to get a group of members the last time . It also seems CPT Beer prefers celebrating such an occasion with SHC members during our country’s birthday ?

So Cheers to Cpt Beer for this invitation , and many more too from other SHC undiscovered Chefs or experts to share their joys and fruits of their labor. Talking about that , still wondering when Ken will start inviting me to try his Tiramisu ?

    Cheers,
    Allrounder

  8. Allrounder,

Yes! North Indian cuisine, home brew beer with music from our very own SHC musician, Edwin! entertaining everyone to a great party. But hor, wrong timing leh, most of us will be away for the long weekend. Some go fishing, others tour Malacca and me JB getaway. Sory, another time…”boleh”?

    Ah Nee.

  9. Hi Ah Nee,

Thanks your lovely comments. Could you tell me what date would suit you so that I can re-arrange it if the rest do not mind as the music man, Edwin is not available on Sat. due to his commitment to clubs. I will re-confirm the date soon after consulting already sign on guests. I feel party w/o music is not complete.
    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  10. Hi Edwin,

I am sure signed on clubbers would not mind the change of date, if there is a music and dance floor.
I will re-confirm the date soon after consulting already signed on guests. I feel party w/o music & dance is not complete. I will provide you the transport for your instruments a day before as I will be quite busy with cooking on the day. What do you say, our music man?

    Kaushal

  11. Hi Ah Nee,

You are right, I thought we should have it another time too. August is such a busy time for “kay poh” people like me. With National day celebrations all over the place, it is my time to work for some “finger lickin’money”. Just received an informal “national” call to play at a “ah lau’s” cocktail for one of the matadours, oops sorry, “mentors” group of sisi helpers.

Kaushal,I will be there next time round alright? If Ron Wie is your secondmate, I am sure to be around.

    Regards,
    Edwin Chen

  12. Hi Ronald,

Thanks a lot for such lovely email. I am so touched and hope, you would join the party. The date may change to Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007 to accomodate our music man, Edwin. I will re-confirm it soon after consulting already sign on guests. I feel, a party w/o music is not complete.

    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  13. Hi Kaushal,

We have not met but from your writings and plans I gather that you a great guy to be with and have around. However, I have mentioned earlier to Ah Nee/Ron Wie that August is really a hectic month for me or other bees like me with “heart land” activities to shoulder. Can we have this party at a later date? Less rush for timely announcement and also letting the girls(regular dancers)decide the date and we will try to compromise. For me, Sunday evenings are workable.

By the way, I can’t leave the equipment overnight as I need them for other pre-engagements. Maybe, Ron Wie could work the logistics,no worries.

    Regards,
    Edwin Chen

  14. Hi Ronald

In #18, you mentioned I’m a beer learner and bracketed my name. Why? Can you drink more than me, hm……? Based on you recommandation, die die must try lah.

    Hi Kaushal,

As I read thro the comments of this post, I knew that the party will not be hold on August. Reserve a seat for me of the party when the date is confirmed. Thanks

Heard your name long ago but never meet, Long to see you soon in the party.

  15. Dear Kausal,

I usually skip the computer on wkends. Read yr reply only now after the website has been fixed after some problems in the morning.

Good it’s not to be an all drinking binge. I am on, whether it’s 11 or 12 August.

Shd there be any change, kindly post.

    Cheers,

    tim

  16. Dear Capt. Kausal,

I enjoyed the last two beer drinking/dinner sessions at your place. I do not mind for another one. Please count me in at whatever date in August or may be in September. Let me know in advance.

    Cheers,

    Ronald Lee

  17. Hi Kaushal

Molly, Ah Nee & myself would be there to enjoy your food cum entertainment by Edwin (if he is singing). Count us in when you hv the time/date fixed. Will there be 7up ?

    Thanks,
    Molly/Ah Nee/Susan

  18. Hi Ronald

    U r asking the gals 2 join the party, how abt u? Will u b joining the party? I was the 1st 1 2 do so..vry kiasu

    Kaushal, i m okay with the date change as i b’live a good party w/o music is lyt a bird w/o wings. i m in favour of having music entertainment;

Edwin, we have not met but i think u must b a good music entertainer. Looking 4ward 2 ur music. I m a music listener not a player but i mix with musicians.

    Tim, u joining the party? Dat’s good..man!!

    Cheers, Dennis

  19. Hi Kaushal

You got our support. Bessie and I will join you gals and guys in the merry making. Any day will do, just give us ample notice…

We anticipate a lot of ‘yum sengs’ besides the good food, entertaining music n dancing. Not to dampen the spirit, go enjoy and make yourself drunk, but please dont drive.

We volunteer to send the drunkards home …….. in a taxi…

    Cheers
    Bessie Lam / Ann Lim

  20. Well Done Kaushal,

I believe the 20 seats are overwhelmingly taken.

I will be glad to fetch those who get drunk after drinking your home-brewed beers in my MPV 7-seaters Taxi only after 9:30 pm. for a minimun sum only.

I’ll be attending the National Day Dinner @ my Community Centre.

    Thanks for your invitation.

    Cheers.

  21. Hi Kaushal,
I will be able to attend if it falls on 12aug and there will be a few of us at the serangoon club doing the walk & jog in the morning. By the time we complete everything, it shud be around noon. We cud hang around the club and drop over your place just nice for dinner & happy hour.
Will let you know the nbr of ppl.
    Tks
    Molly

  22. Susan, dont worry, if the captain cant brew 7-up, he will find 8-down for you and if he cant do that I’ll make him lie-flat……..rather 9-flat, and get the old salt to pump out his creme de la ocean.

Dennis, since I am absorbing strange words from you like lyt……..I’ll also return some like knn, tgl…… to you.

Ann, with you and everyone including Patrick at the steering wheel drunk, if the taxi does not end up in mandai zoo, I’ll wash all the plates and cups for the captain, including his aprons & diapers.

  23. Hi Molly,

Since Edwin, our Music Man is busy during Aug.’07, I will have another one next month, when he is available. For the benefit of signed on members, I will keep Aug. 11 as the day of the event.
Hope to see you and others next month.
    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  24. Hello there Dennis,

I am not a fantastic musician nor a pro. Just one of many crazy hobbies of mine. I have been performing at almost every annual D&D organized by the local general insurance industry since the day I waltzed into the profession. Ions ago!!

    See you someday soon!

    Regards,
    Edwin Chen

  25. Hi Patrick,

Thanks your email. Have a nice National Day Dinner @ your Community Centre. Hope to see you next month, when our music man, Edwin is availble.
    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  26. Hi Dennis,

Hymm, i thought you will be busy with the food, beer, and ladies but you still need my help in some way ?

Will definitely join in if am around and if there is any more place by then.

Cheers, have a good party, food and company of our ladies and Cpt Beer’s hospitality.

  27. Hi Edwin,

Thanks once again. We all are amature in our hobby and interest but still we all are looking forward to party next month, where we hope to have food, drinks, dance and music. So pls. let me know what dates will suit you in the month of Sept. 2007 and I will try to have a party on one of these dates. No party is complete without music and dance. We will miss you on Aug. 11.
    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  28. Hi Dennis,

You are in as per your last email unless you chang your mind. The party is on Aug. 11. We all looking forward to you joining the party as they ‘More the Merrier’.
    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  29. Hi Kaushal,

You are one great guy and very modest. I am just a crazy retired fellow trying to kid myself by bringing Elvis/Cliff/Dean/Frank all back to life! Sunday evenings are fine with me just make sure its alright with the other SHC folks. As you know, I am already labelled a braggart!!

    Regards,
    Edwin Chen

  30. Oui, Captain, if you continue to send acknowledgments to everyone personally, you bet Capt Beer’s thread will hv the most replies/comments in the history of SHC forum.

No need lah………the standard practice is to hv a name list at the top where yr first posting is, which makes it easy for folks to read the who’s who.

Btw, I am a vegetarian but will make an exception come 11 August 2007.

    See you…………

And Edwin, whoever dares to call you a braggart, send him to Nanyang with 1 left hook of yr nanchuen.

Heee, seriously, dont worry what people call you so long as you know what you call yrself. Read of the high accalaims in orbituaries? If the deceased cd rise and raise objections, many wd bcos many know they aint that good.

And those who dont hv $ for a say in the papers, surely, some of them must hv been good.

    So……………?

If you’re good you’re good; if bad, bad. Ultimately it’s one’s conscience and not another wagging tongue which makes the final judgment.

  31. Thanks your advice, Tim. I was just wondering about it. I am always learning. I have got the list, which I will publish at SHC site on the last day of registration i.e. Aug. 04 or ealier, if I reach the desired registrations.

    Kaushal

  32. Hi Edwin,

We all are so delighted to know that you can make it on Aug. 12. It will be wonderful to have you alongwith others. Now I will go back SHC and give the good news.

    Kaushal

  33. Dear Capt Kaushal

Glad that you hv accepted me in your list. However, I hope that u can put me in the month of September instead as I understand that our musician, Edwin will only be availabler in September. I believe party with music will be more complete.

Please register me for the month of September only. Thank you.

    Linda

  34. Dear SHClubbers,

By now, you all know that Edwin, our Music Man is coming alongwith his instruments on Aug. 12, 2007 (Sunday). As others have suggested, the party is therefore re-schedule to Aug. 12. Hope, Cheryl Ho would be able to attend it now.

I am now looking forward to see the following Clubbers and more on the party day:

    Linda

  36. Hi Kaushal

    Cheers, Dennis

  39. Hi Kausal and Edwin,

I have indicated that i will be going if i am around in town, but i may not be during this time, as i cant confirmed yet.

Edwin, get Thomas to join SHC and it will be good if can come along and help you with the logistics.

So Kausal for the time being dont reserved a place for me, better to let someone who have not tried your beer and food have that seat. But if i am around and there is still a place available i will join in definetly.

Hey Ron Lai and Robert are you away during this time , if not dont miss this opportunity.

    Cheers ,
    Allrounder

  40. Hi Ron Wie,

Thanks for the reminder. Yes, I have sent in a membership application for Thomas Ong c/o my email address. Would like you to attend this party but if you need to go on your usual excursions to the north, carry on my man.

    Regards,
    Edwin Chen

  41. Hi Bro.Dennis,

We are in the same age group, so you should know how tough it is when you have to heave your equipment and still play reasonably good music! So if I am not up to your expectations, lets both climb into a time machine and travel back to the sixties! And whoosh! wala! “Tropicana”,”El Amigo”,”Flamingo” is up for your selection!

    See you, Edwin Chen

  42. Hi Clara,

I thought you were on vacation! You did not join me at KWS on mondays to entertain the aunties & uncles. What’s up?

    Regards,
    Edwin Chen

  43. Weiwei Captain,

You ‘mabok’ already huh ? My name appeared twice and Lee Ah Nee’s not there ?!

Wakey wakey, dont start drinking yet ….

    Cheers
    Ann Lim

  44. Sorry about the oversight, Ann. I think, I got ‘mabok’ while brewing fresh beer.
We are looking forward to see you on aug. 12, 2007.

    Kaushal

  45. Hi Chua,

Welcome to the party. The venue is close to Chom Chom Hawker Cenre and lies along Serangoon Garden Way (SGW). If you are coming from Lorong Chuan then at traffic junction near SHELL gas station, turn right along SGW. You will pass a Methodist Church, which is located on Lichfield Road (LR), which is one way. So you can enter a parallel road Ripley Cresecent and go around it to come to LR.

If you any difficulty, pls. call me at 62846263/94234640.

    Kaushal

  46. Hi Kaushal

My crazy gang have informed you to add my name to your guest list, am wondering if I am in or out….he…he….heeee

    Thanks, Ah Nee.

  47. Hi Ah Nee,

I got ‘mabuk’ while brewing fresh beer. I didn’t notice untill I was told. Sorry about the oversight. I am pleased to confirm that you are in the party.
    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  48. Hi Kaushal,

As I have mentioned in my earlier comments, you are one straight guy right through!

If no free transport is available, I have to booked a maxi-cab to transport my equipment to and from your party at $75/- two way and you are now telling me that you are waiving the charge of $15/- due. Is that suppose to be a bonus for me!or what? or am I suppose to laugh or cry? Rejoice??

Hello, Kaushal my new beer friend what is happening?

    Regards,
    Edwin Chen

  49. Hello Capt Kaushal,

Don’t know you “mabuk” or I “mabuk” leh.. you have posted 3x from #68 to #70 to tell me my hubby already included in the party…Ha.ha.. and at the same time I received your email too..

Wow, brewing fresh beer can make you drunk, so can’t imagine when we drink it..ha.ha.. and I noticed you kept saying “Cheers!” too.. so you are having a cuppa too hah ?

  50. Ahoy!

    Dear Captain,

Glad I am still in time for the ship. I would like to join in the party to savour your home-made Dark Malt and Northern Indian cuisine.

Though we have not met, I could imagine Captain, you are a tall, dignified, charming man with a well-groomed beard, in distinctive rank-wreathed cap and immaculate nautical attire decorated with rows of epaulets.

See you and the rest soon.

    Gingko

  51. Hi Ginko,

    Thanks for your lovely email.
I am looking forward to meeting you and others on Aug. 12 and having a good time together. I have not met some of you, that’s why I attach an article, which ws published in SGCC magazine as a brief introduction. The “Party with Capt. Beer” is in fact a ‘Get to Know More People’ opportunity and enjoy our golden years, when our children are grown up.
    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  52. You have hit a ‘Bull’s Eye’, Susan.

Normally in the afternoon, I do have have a glass of beer, while enjoying reading lovely emails and replying it. It’s a great mix. I do not have many vices because I can not afford but I do have atleast one, otherwise I will be called Saint Beer!

    Kaushal

  53. Capitan, I hv been rolling my tongue trying to get the correct pronunciation of yr name…. Call-shell? Cow-shore……………..?

Finally, “Cool-shawl” rolls out the smoothest and so he who calls you Cool Shawl that evening has to be timothy.

(And if you too find it silky to call timothy dim mouldy, that’s fair).

Btw, you really dunno Sue. If she is mad with a bull, she wont waste time hitting it on the eye but will grab it by the………….ooops, almost “there i go again…..” so will let you guess……..yes, that’s correct !

  54. Hi Molly,

Thanks for your offer. As I would be extremely busy on Aug. 12, I would appreciate, if you would just walk over to my place, which is within walking distance.

    Kaushal

  55. Hi Bro Edwin,

Oh yes, i know it’s tough 2 load and unload the equipments. I had experienced it b4, helping my friend 2 do so. Sori i cant help u in transportation as i m car-less but can help u unload the equipment wen u reach Kaushal’s hse.

    Cheers, Dennis

  56. Hahahaha, Dennis Dennis, when the equipment arrives in a taxi, even if you refuse to unload it, the cab captain will, and at no extra charge…..he cant be dropping off the pax and then leaving with his artillery of equipment to let the next passenger ping ping pong pong in his car.

I do see the ferrying of equipment to the Beer Gdn as not a small problem……….

  57. Hi Tim Liu,

During my professional career, I was addressed as Capt. Sri. If Kaushal (Koa-shal) is tongue twisting for you then you may simply call me Sri. Hope, it is easy.

    Kaushal

  58. Hi Edwin,

I thought, you had arranged transportation for the equipment. I had offered to transport it in my van a day b4 and after the event, which still stand. I had waived the charge as a token of our appreciation to your music. It has nothing to do with the transportation. I feel that you should cahrge $5.o per Clubbers for the music. I am sure, they will not mind it as the whole event on cost recovery basis.

    Kaushal

May I ask Clubbers attending the event to cover the cost of transportation by paying $5.0 to our Music Man, Edwin.

    Kaushal

    Kaushal

May I ask Clubbers attending the event to cover the cost of transportation by paying $5.0 each to our Music Man, Edwin.

    Kaushal

  60. Aye, aye Sire……….so immediately $5 is raised.

Seriously, I am more than happy to help defray the transporatation cost, whicih can be quantified, but the immense effort & energy Edwin will put in which is worth a lot more, and for which I am obliged.

  61. My Dear Edwin,

First of all, I apologise for hurting your feelings, which was not my intention at allI will never do such thing. And after all you are ‘Our Music Man and My Guest’. I will ever hurt your feeling knowingly. I did not see my gesture that way. I am therefore really very sorry. My thousand apology!

We are infact very greatful to you and appreciate your effort very much.

Not at all, Edwin. Whoever provides you the transport will be attend the party for free.

    Kaushal

  62. My dear fellow SHCians,

Thank you all kindly for appreciating the fact that I am still a crazy old man doing a one man act! The equipment that I need to ferry to and from the party consists of about five large luggages and accessories. You are jetsetters, you should know,it is no mean feat!

If I am punctured, my performance is really in jeopardy! Ginseng or Chicken Essence won’t help!

It is not so much a case of the fare for the taxi; I rather have a guy like Ron Wie(with car)to come by and help me load up and unload. And,of course, also a guaranteed return trip! Unfortunately,Ron is not available for the party.(maybe, because drivers are not supposed to drink??)So now by hook or by crook, I have to find another SHCian to replace our invaluable Mr. Allrounder!

Kaushal, thank you for your kind offer of moving the stuff a day earlier. I am unable to accept because that means leaving my equipment over night at your place. I need my “barang2” to “chari makan”.

    Regards,
    Edwin Chen

  63. My dear Party People,(oops!sound similar!)

All is well, Thomas Ong a new SHC member has just called to say that he will make the necessary arrangement to ferry me to and fro. My creator is listening!!!

Thanks all for the warmth comaradie.

    G’day mate,
    Edwin Chen

  64. Not at all, Capt, was only taking a cue from you. As a Chinese, I too believe in “you do the 1st day, I’ll do the 15th day (all of the lunar calendar)”.

In the event a car isnt available for Ed, I shall under-write the cab fare of $75.

    Cheers all !

  65. Hi Edwin,

It is nice to know that your transportation needs has been taken care of by Thomas Ong. Our sincere thanks to him. That’s party spirit. We are eagerly awaiting for your lovely music on Aug. 12.

    Kaushal

  66. Hi all,

We are very glad to hear from Capt BEER Kaushal that Thomas Ong has come to the rescue for transporting Edwin Chen’s musical barang barang.

And we are all looking forward to listen to Edwin’s 1 man band song and music and also to sample Cpt. Kaushal’s fine North Indian Maharaja’s Cuisine and his HOME BREW MALT BEER.

Just to share, have anyone sample the UNIQUE flavour and taste of Guiness Malta, a non alcoholic malt ENERGY drink sold only in Malaysia ?

I have hunted high and low in Spore supermkts but disappointed that they do NOT import this brand. p’haps not enough for M’sian consumptn.

I had also try other brands of malt drink sold in S’pore but none of them can beat he unique flavour and taste of G.Malta

Whenever, I visit JB I always ENSURE that I buy back 2 cartons of it and stored some of them at my refrigerator.

When chilled,it taste better than at room temp.

    Drink it to convince yourself.

    Regards,
    Steven Chan

  67. My dear Capt.Sri,

Rest assured, my “one man band” will churn out music & songs as far back as the 1940’s! Even your neighbourhood grandpops & “bibi’s” will come alive! Days of the swing, middle of the road jazz, bebops, cha cha, rhumba, rock & roll, slow fox, waltz, sexy Hawaiian 2 steps ……… you name it, I will try to play. I am taking this outing as a trial run entertaining SHCians to gauge whether I am good enough for a bigger “ah lau” open dance extravaganza in a 5 star ballroom! Also my dear Captain Beer, many years back, I performed in the Piano Lounge on board the “Nippon Maru” from here to Tokyo bay. So, I am quite familiar with entertainment on board with a Captain around! I was also a Compere/Master of Ceremonies for the “Neptune Crossing” too. You know what that is right?

Now with less hair, grown shorter and rounder, have to accept the fact that compering is out! Maybe radio broadcasting is still okay, can give Brian a run for his money? I agree with Terence, better to have comperes with more hair on top and taller! Nevertheless, if you need guidance in voice projection, pronunciation or diction? Microphone techniques? Stage etiquette, gestures, postures, even dress code? Remember, I train insurance sales executives at SII once before too. I must apologise if you see of them still walking around with a twisted “you cha kuay” hanging around their necks or still can’t distinguish between an American knot from an old English knot! Not my fault, huh, I have retired ions ago!

Have a laugh each day, it is good for health!

    Regards, Edwin Chen

  68. Capt, I am already inebriated in the Captain’s Spirit before the Captain’s Beer, and will bring with me not tubs but haha, barrels to bungus just a little of yr brew home.

I dont drink beer much but I do know of a hot market at serangoon and another at golden mile. Heee, spend $15 to get back $100……..very good deal.

  69. My dear Edwin,

Thanks your lovely email. It is nice to know that we have such an acomplished musician as a SHClubber. We are really very lucky to have you as a SHClubber and to know that you would be coming to the party with your instruments to make it a memorable one.

Pls. do not worry about anything. I am sure that you will be shining as a star on Aug. 12 among all the clubbers and every one will be swaying to your music.

    See you soon.

    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  70. Hi Tim Liu,

So there are now two who are already ‘mabok’ before the party. See you sober before the party on Aug. 12 and ‘mabok’ with good music, food & drinks after the party along with many who are not driving.
    Cheers!

    Kaushal

  71. Dear SHClubbers,

I just had a name change. Since most of you find it difficult to pronunce Kaushal, my first name, you may call me SRI as I was called Capt. SRI during my professional career. I am sure, it is sweet & short!

    SRI

  72. Capt, no qn that there’ll be good music, food & drinks but do pray that I wont become mabok after the party ‘cos I wd jump on the first bed I see. If that anyone not you tells you the next morning that I am a strange bedfella, it’s true, hehe.

  73. Dear Capt.Sri,

The one good thing about growing old is that we have many of those wonderful memories (good ones) to cling on to and cherish. In my collection, mostly great parties, in exotically contoured birthday suits!

I don’t drink much these days unlike those crazy young upstart days, where half a bottle of Johnny Walker Black is just a thirst quencher. Especially, when my cherubic old English friend, Robert(Bob)Brown, author of numerous Marine Cargo and Marine P&I Club books comes into town.

Now, I think I probably can still manage to walk the line( not the Plimsol line,I hope) after one glass of your homemade brew of beer!

    Keep those mugs tinkling!..Edwin Chen

  74. Hi Clara,

Sorry I cant give you a ride to Capt house as I will be at the club the whole day from 7.30am but can give you a ride home in the evening.
    Tks Molly

  75. Dear Molly,
Thank you for your reply. Ive already made arrangement with Agnes..Thanking you in advance for giving me a lift back home. Meeting u soon :)

    clara ..

  76. Dear Captain,

With the passing of the Red Tide yesterday when babes & babies alike wore red, saw red, I too will shed my red & drop my red herring.

I aint a vegetarian and from what I know at makan outings, most if not all SHCians are omnivorous so if you’re intent to do some vegetarian dishes, perhaps the portions shdnt be too large.

I am reminded of the great feast at Caroline’s party where the best of food was served. Regrettably, altho we tried to eat everythg, there was still a lot of food left.

Ultimately, let the Captain’s beer brings on rounds of cheers.

    tim

  77. Hi Capt Kaushal
Due to some personal commitment, I am unable to attend this party. Please accept my apology for the short notice.
To all of you who can be there, have a good time!
    Oi Cheng

  78. Hi Kaushal,

I am sure everybody will meet more and new friends, and the evening will be very enjoyable.

Can I ask you to take about 10-15 digital pictures of the evening? We can share these pictures with other SilverHairsClub members.

    Terence Seah

  79. Hi Cpt,

Since Oi Cheng cant make it and I am still in town, is it ok if i come and join the fun.

Save the trouble for you and Oi Cheng on the refund, and also will try to help Edwin with the logistics and maybe jump on Thomas car too.

    Cheers
    Allrounder aka Ronald

  80. Dear Ron,

I am sure Capt Sri does not mind the replacement arrangement. What say you Capt?

An extra pair of hands for me is a blessing!
This is old goat won’t have to crank on overdrive! I am bungling to your place with my load from church my dear brother.

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  81. Hi Terence/Capt SRI

The count-down is on, waiting for the party to begin, and let Edwin to let the hair down (Silverhairs), to the music of “Begin the Beguine”. Capt. SRI maybe too busy, with his hands full, hosting the party for the Silverhairs, so let me lend him a hand to snap some pics on his behalf, so that other Silverhairs will have a chance to enjoy the party thru the pics.

    CHEERS

    Ronlai

  82. Hi CPT Sri and Edwin,

Thanks for the untiring hours of preparation and cooking to serve the delicious North Indian cuisine and homemade Beer, that is a treat not usually found easily in Spore. Also the hospitality of your wife and daughter in making us feel at home and making a mess of your place with our merry making.

Edwin and Thomas, also for volunteering to move your equipment and do a performance (taking precious time away from your wife, not sure how much it will cost you lah ) for SHC members for our listening pleasure of unending favorites oldies, and the chance to practice our dances.

Cheers to one all and all for a wonderful simple evening that many can just sit back and enjoy without having to do much work.

I will surely come again anytime rather than going to any crowded noisy disco ,without good food, free flow of beer and listening, singing and dancing to oldies with Edwin and Clara and others.

To those who missed it, wait for the next National Day ,2008. Remember limited capacity for this CPT Beer Party.

    Cheers

  83. Hi Kaushal,

Please accept my apology for not able to turn up for the party.

I was trying to get to you but wasn’t able to contact your phone.

I had a last minute tour guiding to take care of.

So I hope that all SHC members have a wonderful time @ your home.

Thanks and regret for not able to turn up.

    Regards

    Patrick Yeo

  84. Dear Sri,

It was truly a feast of the Captain, a captain equal to if not surpassing the stature of Admirals Nelson & Cheng Ho.

I didnt know what the meat was but did it matter when the food melted in my mouth, lingering with sweetness?

Captain’s Beer was smooth and bcos it wasnt gassy, I gulped 3 mugs doqn and hid 1 bottle in my pocket.

It was a fascinating insight into beer making as the Master Mariner took us thru the finesse of beer, lager & stout.

(Not unexpectedly, Dennis came over and asked whether I had a white cock for him (silverhair I am but where got white cock?) cos he wanted to immediately cut its head & swear allegiance to the Capt so as to come under his intensive tutelage).

Equally, my appreciation also goes to Edwin who is still very professional in his mettle. I particularly enjoyed his low, husky & powerful voice which, like the Captain Beer, soothed me to a high minus the hallucinations.

Yes, Terence & Patrick, you missed them all but nvm, hopefully there’ll be another time.

Thank you Sri & Edwin and all others who made the nite one for the memory.

  85. Hi Capt.SRI

“THANK YOU FOR THE PARTY’ a song that will be well sung, if it is done, that will be very appropriate for last night party. With the support of Mrs Kaushal and his daughter, Arti’s help, the party went on very smoothly.

Edmond: With the beautiful music provided and the lovely songs sung by you and also from members of Silverhairs, especially Clara and Steven, and not forgeting the dancing that glided along throughout the night.

We will definitely like to hear more of Edmond’s music and songs in future gatherings and Kaushal’s Mutton Biryani, Chicken Curry, Salad Yoghurt and not forgetting the Dark Malt Beer and finally a lesson of beer-making by Kaushal to end up the program for the night.

    REGARDS

    Ron N Alice Lai

  86. Hi Kaushal,

Thank you for your kind hospitality and your home brew beer. It is indeed a great party, with Edwin singing to our favourite tunes and our fellow SHCians dancing…. waltzing….to the tempo. We really enjoyed ourselves!
Once again, thanks so much to Edwin for the lovely songs,Thomas for the transportation, Kaushal, the great host!

    Ah Nee.

  87. Dear Captain,

Thank you for a wonderful evening… the warm hospitality, good dinner, excellent home-brewed beer and a little blessing of light evening shower. So glad I came to the party and had the chance to taste your specialty beer. Am not a beer drinker at all, but was amazed that I really enjoyed your brew and not being knocked out. Must probably have consumed at least three glasses… I am embarrassed.

Thank you once again Captain… and please give Usha a big hug for me for working untirelessly preparing the dishes and being so entertaining with the interesting family history.

Finally, the pleasant company of SHCians. Nice to meet Grace Kok, Wendy Goh, Edwin Chen and Thomas Ong.

Edwin, I can’t wait to hear you sing and play your music again. Do keep me in your guest list when you next perform, okay?

    Gingko

  88. Hi,

First of all, I would like to thank you for coming to the party. Also many thanks to our music man, Edwin for his lovely music to match our favourites songs, which enabled us to dance to its tunes. I must say that he made the party alive and vibrant with his music & songs.

I also must add to this that now there will not be another ‘Party with Capt. Beer’ w/o Edwin.

I am also glad to know that you all enjoyed the food, drinks and the ambeince and look forward to another occasion to meet up with you all at the party. Pls. check out another post next month under titled ‘My Beer My Way’.

  89. Dear Capt Sri,

Thank you my dear shipmate for a wonderful Sunday evening. Many thanks also goes to your charming daughter and wife who worked so tirelessly to make all of us feel comfortable. My dear ladies, please accept my heartfelt appreciation.

I wish I could have done more for you and SHCians but I had a long Sunday. The performance at your home being the third call and final engagement before I could relax and dive into my bed for forty winks! I was really tired and seriously working on reserve battery! The welcoming hug from Capt Sri really helps!

Anyhow, once again a big thank you to all those present for easing on their expectations and making my haphazard presentation acceptable. Most of all, it was a blessing to know that Tim is an awfully nice guy afterall! Thanks Tim for the directions, otherwise, Thomas and I may have been shipwrecked or ran aground somewhere!

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  90. Hi Gingko,

Thank you for your kind words. Ron Wie, is the unofficial key SHC party organiser, he should be able to keep you abreast of party happenings!

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  91. Wow, I really missed the food, music and friendship. From the comments, i see everybody had a great share of the fun.

Kaushal, you are an execellent example when you initiate this home gathering. And, I have yet to meet Edwin Chen.

    Terence Seah

  92. Dear Lee Ah Nee,

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement. If an opportunity beckons, I am ready to waltz with you, even it is without Straus!

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  93. Hi Ron Lai,

Just a slip of the finger, no fault of the mind!
Glad you are happy with the proceedings and my tattered performance. Nice to have met you and your wife.

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  94. Hi Capt Sri,

It was really a great feast and thanks to you and your family for their kind hospitality and the deliciously prepared good food and beer.

Edwin – Your music and singing was superb. Thanks for taking the time and trouble too. We all enjoyed very much.

    MOlly

  95. Hi Molly,

Thank you. You and your regular SGC group of dancers are really very sporting.I could see from my focal point, the mass consumption of tissue paper! That’s proof of the amount of heat you guys radiated!

    Cheers,keep in touch,Edwin Chen

  96. Thanks Kaushal( Capt Sri ) for demonstrating and sharing with us the fermentation of hops, malted barley sugar not sugar cane ,yeast and water to produce organic beer. NO chemicals or preservatives FULL of Vitamin B too. A Healthy drink indeed.

The organic beer you made taste SUPERB with slight bitter and sweet taste unlike the commercial Guiness Stout,Tiger Beer and Heineken.

I was speaking to a friend abt your specially brewed beer and she told me that he had read an article recently in the newspaper abt a capt that brew beer.

Was it you ? becos she could not remember the name but remember it was a captain.

Thanks for taking so much trouble to cook your Northern cuisine. Waking up at 4am to specially cook for us is a sacrifice. In one word, your food taste yummy.

It was good to meet your wife and daughter too who have helped too in the cooking.

Sri,is it ok for you to share your life experience with SHC in the comments column abt your life as a Captain ?

Thanks to Edwin Chen, our 1 man band. By wearing dark sun glasses and playing the organ , he reminds me of the singer Stevie Wonder.

The popular song …No summer rain to celebrate…….I just called to say I love you..was echoing in my ears.

Edwin,I love your proffesional style, music and singing. How abt sharing with us, how you built up such a beautiful voice?

At Sri’s party, everyone was letting their hair down. The ladies were more SPONTANEOUS than the guys esp. on the floor dancing to the rhthym of Edwin’s Cha Cha and line dancing.

On the whole, it was indeed great to see SHCians enjoyed themselves Happily Chatting , Karaoking ( sha la laing… ) Dancing and Perspiring away.
    Very GOOD exercise.

    With SINCERE Appreciation,
    Steven Chan

  97. Dear Steven Chan,

Thank you for the accolade, you and SHCians are making me float like I am now on cloud nine!

Our vocal chords, like training any part of our physical self, can be trained to articulate in a manner close to our desire. Thanks to my early days at SAS where we had excellent strict teachers of the English language, for which boastfully I can say, resulted in my proficiency to hail a little better than the average “kwai loh”that I chanced upon to communicate with. For this, I am forever beholden to the late Vivien Quek Esquire for speech training(making funny faces), the late Hon.Francis Thomas for pronunciation and diction and our past President Devan Nair for English literature. The late aussie Rev.Barker for spiritual guidance and the final amalgamation.

I guess, for the most part, like in sports or any activity, you have to get in the flow of things. Practice makes perfect. I was very active in debating societies, meet the people MP forums, organized and moderated international seminars and conferences, represented and spoke for Singapore at youth conferences abroad etc. All these activities gave me the opportunity to speak off the cuff and so, there is really no secret formula. It is through the grind of things that the end product inevitably would have to surfaced.

In my early years as a liability claims expert, I have to make appearances in courts of law almost every other day week. Sometimes testifying in Malaysian courts too. All these contributed to this natural flair to articulate in a precise and clear manner. Fact is I have never ever given any magistrate or judge the opportune occasion to question any defiency or clarity in my speech. With due respect, unlike some poor barristers who were actually told off by the Court for their mumbling when making representations! Sad isn’t it, working with a blunt tool of trade. Likewise, if you drive a vehicle for a living, you can’t afford to drive along like doing a Sunday leisure drive, right? My sincere apologies, if I have unconsciously hurt anyone out there.

My dear Steven, always remember to praise our creator(God,or whatever you want to call Him) for giving us a perfect, healthy body and providing us with the accompanying intellect to organise and make full use of it in a wholesome loving way. Work on it, work hard if you desire it, get guidance if necessary!

By the way, I wore tinted glasses because the glare from the keyboard monitor is quite disturbing when you have to perform through the evenings, mostly in darkness. Without the shades, I have to squint my eyes.

My heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all brothers & sisters in SHC who have made my contributions really worthwhile and meaningful.
    Edwin Chen

  98. Edwin,

In #134 you said “….from my focal point…. proof of the amount of heat you guys radiated…”

Had you moved yr focal pt a little to the shaking bums you might hear a melodious “poooooooooooooooot”.

In the same heat & sound generated, someone also farted. In fairness, that chap was only releasing a little bit more than stress.

You said thanks to accolades…wonder what wd you say to me if I give you marmalade chocolates?

(Heee, hope by now you’ve descended from cloud nine but if still cannot must call 999 b4 all those late monsieurs push you over to join their line and b4 the late justice Punch Coom punch you black eye).

…..love me. loath me but that’s me, lalala…lalala……….

Ok, tim be serious ! (June Lim calling out to tim in exasperation).

I hv inadvertently omitted my tribute to Thomas Ong, the unsung hero (or as well, the hero who can but didnt sing that nite).

Thanks Thomas for coming with Edwin and his sound system. Without your kind assistance, the nite wd have been very different.

  99. Hi Tim,

Wow, you are great, I did not pick up that “pooooot” during the heat wave, it must have been at a very low frequency!

Thomas says “you’re welcomed”, whatever that means. I just bought him a curry fish head lunch at the MYMCA cafe. Now he is resting at my place. So, I guess he is quite ready to let off another “pooot” at a much higher decibel!

    Thanks again for your help..

    Cheers, Edwin Chen

  100. Hi Steven,

It’s always nice to know that you all had a good time with Capt. Beer and his cooking and brewing. We also enjoyed the evening throughly with you. I am prepared to do it more often but need to organise it better so that some willing SilverHairs can lend me some support in organising it.

I am planning to have another one on Sept. 07, where I will a Live Demo on ‘How to Brew World Class Beer & SAVE MONEY!’ Therefore next party is titled ‘My Beer My Way’. More info. on this event follows soon.

Capt. Beer has been featured in print media, radio and TV in Singapore.

Every Capt. has lots of tales to tell as he has seen so much in various ports and at open sea. I will love to share it over a glass of beer.

    Sri

P.S. I have asked my daughter, Aarti to download a few photos of the last event. Let’s see, when she gets the time as she is working full time unlike me & my ‘Young Lady’.

  101. Hi Capt Kaushal

Thanks for your generosity in opening your house for this beer party. I can see that you have a very close knitted family. Your lovely wife and daughter are both helpful and accommodating. We appreciate the time you and your family spent in making this event a success.

A big applause for Edwin who did not even stop to take a drink upon arrival to set up his musical instrument to entertain all of us. We could not have enjoyed more without his music and songs. We truly enjoyed your presence, Edwin. Thank you very much for your entertainment throughout.

    Cheers,

    Susan

  102. Hi Suzhang,

Samurai spirit! Finished task first then “banzai with sake”! Glad you like the “gado gado” music, watashi do better next time.

    Domo arigato, Edwin Chen

  103. Kaushal

Thks 4 the wonderful hospitality, the food and the homemade beer that you, ur wife and daughter, Arti had churned out. Wendy and I really enjoyed them,

    Edwin,

Tks 4 the wonderful music. It liven up the party. Keep it up, man.

    Tim,

I dont knw wat u r talking abt.

    Cheers, Dennis

  104. Hi Dennis Wee,

Thank you so much for helping me with the shuffling of my equipment and for giving me a quick thumbnail tour of the local baking industry. I will certainly put persons who are interested to start this line of business to go to you for technical advice.

Keep in touch and best regards to your wife,
    Edwin Chen
