“Stars in Concert” on Sun, 11 Jan 2009 at SGCC

This event is now firmed for Sun 11 Jan 2009.  Will this be a dream come true?  "Stars in Concert".

Performers on stage can perform solo, duets or in groups.  Everybody on stage will be dressed in their best, red lipsticks, polished shoes, straightened hair, and look smashing from far.  For the audience, Cheongsams would be a delight; a tie would be great.  No shorts, slippers, singlets.

Performers cannot just come up to the stage to sing and perform.  There will be an audition.  Participants would be required to submit a recorded CD of their song performance.  Any language, any dialect.  Preference given to groups or duets.

  1. Very tantalising……….finger licking good. And a few hours later, crossing midnite, the married will have to give away angpows………Great !

  2. Terence..Im not raising my hands yet, just jotting down in my calendar 19.1.08 as an important event!
    Yep!..i ticket for me pls.
kiasu lah..since only for 200 seats..:))

Tim…Chinese New Year falls on 7&8 Feb 08,so no angpows for you!

  3. Hahahaha, Tuan Mohd Ali’s beloved daughter, you fell for it……..I wanted to know when CNY 2008 is but too lazy to check and you just helped me.

(Contented, I can now happily scoot off for my CNY liao…………..lalalalalalala)

  4. Tim,

Good try. My calendar does not have the lunar months, so I could not tell when is next year’s CNY.

Prepare yourself, Get a partner to sing with you, and do a duet.

Time to show the better part of you.

    Terence Seah

  5. Thank you and all the more oomph when the encouragement comes from my better half Terence.

Folks, shine yr eyes on that evening bcos Tim is to parade his better half, or in his words, “part” Terence.

In a duet, we’ll be ready to do yr beck & call, be it the fox trot, the doggy crawl or the bare-back cat purring up to yr most ecstatic (some say erotic)imagination….just anythg and ads he has promised to bring you that Top of the World feel.

    Long for that day……………

  6. Hi Terence,

    Mama mia!

Talent time (20/10/2007 ) still not over yet.

    Now comes the Star concert.(19/01/2008)

No wonder they say S’poreans are indeed VERY KIASU. Very TRUE indeed.

    Steven Chan

  7. Steven, dont mama mia or papa pia when you shd be inviting mama & papa to join SHC and then they too can come in their party best to do the chirpy chiry cheep cheep song which has a lot of mama & papa in its lyrics, and, for the finale, mama lifts up papa to pluck papayas.

  8. Steven Chan…that’s not kiasu, its called efficiency!, plan ahead, book yr diary.hhmm:)

    Tim,Timbaktu!..nice try
Terence..im very sure that CNY date is correct..cos im planning for a get-away with my primary school classmates(plus our families) to Bali! (long weekend!)
AnnTo…don make me malu lah…broadcast like that hor…ooii!

  9. It’s simply tim but it became tim ah liu, tim tim liu and now timbuktu……….fated that I hv to carry so much on my back when I only hv space for one…………..and I can see that the beloved daughter of Tun Seri Mohd Ali is placing her umbrella to chop 2 places in the queue……………

  10. Ok lah Nor, since you malu, then call in June, Nee and the rest of the teocheow “ah nius” and do the play on “Lady Precious Stream”, English version. Still have vivid memories of that play, remember? That was a good one.

  11. “Kiasu” maybe use as a “word” in other sense, but not in this context, where Terence have a far-sighted idea to incorporate it into reality, once the talent-time shoot off. At least, from the talent-time, he can scout around for participants for the forth-coming concert, at least in part, even if, not in whole.

    Ronlai

  12. helo, dear simply Tim…
u better not mention my late father’s name ok..he will know u always ‘bully’ me,one peaceful nite he come & haunt u & squeez u till u bcome tim-sum…i dono ah!..hehehe:)

  13. Nor, I hv been seeing Tuan Mohd Ali almost nitely…..he is still as prolific as ever, comes to me for numbers and has no qualms with the meaty tim-sum I buy from chinatown.

Back to a serious discussion on the topic.

Before putting down a deposit for the concert hall, we really need to carefully weigh the possibility of a “solid two-hour evening of entertainment of non-stop song, music and dance performance” actually taking place.

Do we have the performers if they’re to come from SHC only?

Not many of us has this knack to put up a show. Mere singing or cracking a 1-off joke is easy but to hold court?

Granted, if we dont try we wont know but before attempting on a bold & ambitious event dished out to an audience of 200, we must at least be satisfied that we have enough in the 2-hour programme to engage, if we not fascinate, the audience, and try to keep them rapt & on their feet.

  14. Tim,

I like the non-serious part of you.

Any event which is 100% run and organised by SilverHairsClub would make us proud as SilverHairs in Singapore. I believe you and many do feel likewise.

Performers will be 100% SilverHairs. For those participating, we have a plan for the singers and performers to rehearse, under capable SilverHairsClub trainers. This explains why we announce the event 6 mths ahead.

Even amateurs who have not performed before will be surprised how well they perform. We can do it.

  15. Terence,

I dont like the serious part of you which is your optimism, usually with only 3 legs to stand on.

Be that as it may, I love you too much to want to dampen yr enthused optimism more. Rest assured, being a SHC activist, I wont run away even when the feet get cold.

Yes, come what may, we’ll do it together.

    tim

  16. The Talent-Time was a good occasion for us to identify the Super Stars. Unlike the Talent-Time, the intended “Stars in Concert” would have a live band, an auditorium plus singers and performers.

The initial thoughts were two music groups, an auditorium location, plus inhouse singers and performance.

After thinking about it over and after the Talent-Time, I feel the timing may be too rush, and the theme was not very clear. We have a few keen members prepared to take the key positions.

On this note, we shall hold the “Stars-in-Concert” to a later date, likely middle of this year. We wont give this up. The SilverHairsClub has enough talents and experience to make this event workable.

And to those whom I have contacted to participate in the organising committee, I shall get back to you at a later date. Thank you very much for now.

    Terence Seah

  17. Dear Terence

Your 2nd last para “…we shall hold the ‘Stars-in-Concert’ to a later date, likely middle of this year.” Helloooo, we are already at the tail end of this year leh. We know, by yourself confessing, that you cant walk straight, you cant get the month straight, but now, you cant even get the year straight. What are we going to do with you???

  18. Hi All

E TT was wonderful n enjoyable. E attendance increased, e funs doubled, e fever lasted longer n seemed 4evr. E best I enjoyed was e dancing in e finale.

Susan hd done an xcellent job. A big “HUG” 2 U fr me. I oso believe it was e most stretchful one tat resulted in her nursing her nerves 4 e nx 48 hr. Not 4getting ur gang hd been most supportive.

Lily n Daniel did us proud by playing judges 4 e nite 2 judge e contestants. Unfortunately, 3 contestants did not participate.

Ron, U r just superb. Din noe tat ur chicken dance is so “chic ken”. Reli loved it. Joy, U reli stole e show as being e lady in red. 4 a moment after stepping into e plc, I tot U were a new member who I hd not met.

Ronald Lee, wow ur one-man KJ was fantastic in keeping e music going n made us all felt young once more pouring out e numbers of yesteryear.

Looking fwd 2 more funs, joys n laughters in 2008.

  19. Terence, in the Chinese world of wuxia (pugilists), you have “zo huo ru muo” liao, that is to say, you hv run into fire & demon which, in Hang Tuah’s language, is gila sudah.

According to the treatment in Shern Tiow Xia Nu, you’ll hv to lock yrself in a room with me, down to our birthday suits, and I will then pump my gas into you but during this healing process no one shd disturb us and I think Ben’s son will be too happy to be the guard, with his camera in hand to catch any peeping toms or marys………

  20. Tim Liu spoke with me a few times, and he thinks the idea of Stars-in-Concert is too wild a dream. I nod my head as if in agreement, but really and secretly, I hope we can make it come true. So, I am not giving up.

I am about to go to a concert in a short while, here in HongKong. It’s all songs and music. Yesterday, my son with a group, sang at a stage performance; the song “”Greatest love on earth’ by Whitney Houston. Never heard of the song before, but the group sang well, after two weeks of training. Good English too, they learnt the song by heart.

Please read the original Post. I shall come back to you again.

    Terence Seah

  21. Dear Terence

The reason you never heard the song before its because it is “The Greatest Love of All”.

I will attend the concert if it is organised.

  22. Yes, over bottles of Blue Label, I did say to Terence that doing our very own concert appears to me a wild dream hatched in the wilderness. Terence nodded and continued to nod his head for the rest of the nite……………was told that he was still nodding at the DnD.

Seriously, altho i hv my reservations – not least, do we have enough performers, the target audience (is it to be a SHC event only SHCians to partcipate/watch, or opened to the public), the time needed to practise – I threw in my support, convinced that every improbable starts from dreams, esp when Terence was wide awake when he shared his dreams and an ice cream with me.

Let’s wait for him to initiate the discussion and SHCians give their views.

    tim

  23. Hi Hanniah Chiang,

During our last gathering at Hans, we discussed the possibility of you being our choreographer for a few “song and dance” entertainment items during Stars-in-Concert. The plans are still progress, but I shall let you know, once I have the other details pin down.

    Hi Jeremy Tan,

For Stars-in-Concert, I have in mind, and would like very much to ask you to be the Marketing manager, for Stars-in-Concert. When we next meet, I shall catch up with you.

    Terence Seah

  24. Updates on Stars-in-Concert:
For this evening event, the compere and co-compere have been identified, and shall be announced closer the date of the event.

Venue-wise, the concert location has not been found yet, although I shall work with Venue hunter, Molly Chua to identify the location. The venue should be an auditorium, complete with lights and stage.

The task of selecting the singers and entertainers has still not been filled. But, we do have a number of qualified talents, whom we would approach soon.

    Music, still a debate.

    Terence Seah

  25. Hi LydiaC,

I read you can sing Silver threads and Golden needles. Will catch up with you one day. I think you can entertain too.

    Terence Seah

  26. Hi everybody,

We are closer to having our “Stars-in-concert” come true in Jan 2009. To share with you, what is being done in the background is we are getting in principle acceptance by the singers and performers. Over the last couple of months, I have been on the look out for singers who can perform and entertain on stage/concert. We have many talents within SilverHairsClub.

In my mind, this will be the first time, we will have an event that will be open to children, families and members of the public. Hopefully, with this concert, our friends and families will be able to know what SHCians are doing together when they get together. Details on how this will be done, will be announced at a later date.

I guess some of you may think this event is not workable or crazy, but I believe it will be craziness that will get us there.

Two comperes have been identified to provide professional bilingual coverage of the evening’s event. I hope to have their acceptance too.

A nice beautiful auditorum with lighting and sound system, has also been identified; and I hope to have this booking done asap.

If you think you would like to help me get this running professionally, please feel free to let me know. And if I have missed you out to perform on stage, please write to me via email directly. This event would be organised by SHC members only.

    Terence Seah

  27. Hi, this is an invitation to SHCians who would like to sing and perform during our coming Stars-in-Concert, in Jan 2008. If you love to sing and perform, in any language or dialect, please contact me direct. You can also participate as a group.

I would be organising a pre-performance rehearsal, sometime in Nov. Currently, we have 6 persons who have been supportive, in participating. We are likely to limit the number of singers/performers to 10, with a max of 2 songs each. Final selection will be completed around 5 Dec 2008.

    Terence Seah

  28. Hi Terence

This must be the event you spoke to me about during May SHC Monthly Gatherings at Hans. I just knew that this event is confirmed from Rene on 02 Oct asking me if I want to form a grp to perform.

I will try my very best to contribute 2 items but if not in time then only 1 item & will keep you updated once I hv finalised it (need to discuss with my gang first). Fyi, I’m going 1 week holiday on last week of Oct, as such would appreciate if you could arrange pre-performance reheasal towards end Nov otherwise too rushing for me to prepare.

    Tks & Rgds
    Hamidah

  29. Hi Hamidah,

I thought you had forgotten about the event. Do nite the concert focuses on singing, not dancing. I am about to identify the program choreographer soon. So, I hope to give more details next week.

    Terence Seah

  30. Hi Terence

Tks for replying. I did not forget this event & thought it would be posted on the front page of SHC website, so kayu of me I just wait for yr write up. When one member told me abt this I asked where she got this info from & how do I go abt to view it & she taught me. Fyi, I’m still not so familiar with SHC website & just started to hands on in Sept. Yes I’m aware abt yr focussing on singing & not dancing.

    Hamidah

  31. Hi Terence and all would be performers,

I have been toying with the idea of doing one or two, sing and dance routine something like John TraBotak and Olivier Newton’s “Grease”, for the fun , fun and fun of doing it.

So if you feel you are game and have what it takes to want to do this for the fun, do email me. But on the serious note, I will do it in a very laid back way, more for the fun so dont expect it to be turn into anything serious, or uptight must not lose face or lose this or that, etc.

Only thing I will be serious about is that we can enjoy ourselves doing it and improve our musical ability in some way working as a group.

Maggi, are you game for this ? You laughed 3/4 of the time on the badminton court but yet we managed to win the game. You indicate you can sing rihgt, so that’s is how I will like to do this event, game for this, for fun and laughs, maybe Cat Ho and Yeo do the jiggle ,”ooh” “aahs” and side distractions and Boon providing the Beat ? Of course Lydia will like to be Olivier so Maggis have to be Sandie, that leaves between be and Boon to be the baddie??

Hymm, daydreaming after a good round of badminton, table tennis and coffee shop talk, while relaxiing in this ChiangMai-like rustic old rented bungalow that seems a world away from our FI Singapore City.

Heard STeven said that our SHAG cycling/blading group activity in Desaru has been pictured on front page Vogue? Hymm SHC going places lah, so Terence you stars in Concerts already starting so twinkle in broad daylight. Cheers

  32. Hi RonaldW,

I have already approached LydiaC, and I guess she will work with her team to create a sing and song item. If you are looking at something laid back, then I suggest not to start in the first place.

I shall ask the program choreographer, and we shall get back with firmer ideas soon, likely next week.

    Terence Seah

  33. Hey Ron

Your spelling needs a bit of polishing leh. First off, pls spell my name correctly hor….it is MaggiE. I think you must be hungry all the time to think of Maggi Mee la.

Of course Lydia will like to be Olivier so Maggis have to be Sandie, that leaves between be and Boon to be the baddie??

Anyway thanks for your vote of confidence but as Terence said, let the program choreographer decide la. Who is the PC anyway? Me got time but no talent leh…hehe

  34. Hey some of the comments got cut off??

The second para I wrote after baddie was <I think Olivia is a lady and Olivier is a guy. who is ‘be’? Wah lao , you get the sexes mixed up leh.

  35. Hi Maggie and all,

Sorry lah not hungry but too laid back almost having a siesta in this quiet rustic place, only those who have been to Bangkok would know. Imagine an old house between 2 modern tall Buildings in Bangkok, then you can get the feel of what I am talking about being here, in the room surrounded by trees, with a window view of the forest outside and birds chirping away, you don’t even know they are neighbours around ?

Yes it is Olivia not Olivier and also ‘be’ should be ‘me’.
Thanks for picking up the mistakes.
Terence, a surprising comment from you but as Maggie pointed out, if there is an audition, should not the selection be done by the judges? As for Lydia, she is not that famous as Olivia yet but yes she can decide to choose to work with whoever she wants to.

Btw, I was just have afternoon dream, trying to be creative, musically ,etc, just dreams lah, so dont worry if it does not take off, just thought of it is fun enough. Maggie must be all the laughing gas I got during the badminton game lah. Cheers

  36. “Stars-in-Concert” is now set to be held at the Serangoon Garden Country Club Auditorium. Fully equipped with an excellent sound and lighting controls system. Numbered seating, with a capacity of 196 persons, sloping from front to back, and in clear view of the stage.

Unless the world goes into a full scale recession, and we cannot make this dream come true, the date has been set for Sun, 11 Jan 2008. Time: 1800 – 2130 hrs. Please keep this date in your diary.

Please read original post for details.

    Terence Seah

  37. Huh? Terence, I think you made a mistake on below :

End Oct – Selection of auditorium/concert hall – isn’t this now confirmed ?

Am glad you have found this place. Alas, your dream comes true !

    Suzhang

  38. Suzhang, Stars-in-Concert will be made possible because of the support of a number of SHCians. The venue is made possible because of Molly Chua. She will assist in venue and F&B decisions.

Now, for an announcement on the singers who have indicated their support to perform on stage, without script and in full view of the audience. They are LC, PY, CG, TL, AL, TBL and SC. I am hoping to get participation from DL, SK and JC.

For comperes, we shall have CY, plus another person whom I am still waiting for the raised hand.

I use abbreviations, as I would still like the names to remain a mystery. But I got to write them down, in case my memory fails.

There will be a program choreographer, who would be taking up the difficult responsibility of scheduling the singers, sequencing the different stages and cordinating the singers with the songs & music. This will involve 1.5 hours of hard and creative work.

Currently, all singers would have to put their song performance on CD, which we would give to the audio maintenance technician. However, if you know of person/group (must be SHC members) who can provide a band, please have the person contact me directly.

    Enough for this week.

    Terence Seah

  39. I am pleased to inform that Lily Ho has agreed to be the Program Choreographer for “Stars-in-Concert”. She would be in charge of choreographing and scheduling the different singing performances, from the time the concert starts to the time it ends.

Individual singers will still have to create their own performance, within the time slot given. Singers may also have their own background dancers, and may sing solo, duet or in a group.

For those participating, please be prepared to give a short overview of the performance. Singers would be required to put all their recordings on a CD, which will be given to the audio technician. Further details on rehearsals and when to submit the CD will be given later.

    Terence Seah

  40. For “Stars-in-Concert”, there will be an auditorium seating plan. Ticketing, fixed seating and registration will be managed by Janet Heng, and assisted by a team. Once we have more details, we can open the concert for booking.

Stars-in-Concert will be opened to SHC members and their famiilies. More details later.

    Terence Seah

  41. As you would have known by now, we are putting in place “Stars-in-Concert”.  This is a live stage performance, and is intended to showcase SilverHairsClub to other Singaporeans and SHC families.  The date is fixed for Sun Jan 11, 2009. We are planning to invite media participation, and plan for a 200 person audience participation or full audience.

The tentative concert schedule is as described on this Post. This event is not confidential, although we would like to give an element of surprise to our members. All performers would be keeping their performance confidential from other performers.

    1. Molly Chua will be in charge of the venue auditorium and F&B. Molly has always been very active with SHC activities; and she works very well behind the scene to get many logistics issue operational.

    2. Lily Ho is our program cordinator. Her role is to piece, string and choreograph the concert proper, except for admin and logistics. She has the final say on who sings first, second and all the way to the last performer, basically from curtains up to curtains down. Lily will also be choreographing the last item of the evening. She is excellent with this role.

    3. Catherine Yeo, one of two comperes, may speak with you at some time to know more about you. The other compere will be announced soon. Our two comperes will handle the introduction of the singer performer, and will manage the floor from curtains up to curtains down. Catherine is very pleasant, always with a smile, and great to have on stage. Will definitely get our concert smooth running;; including all the oops and wows.

    4. Janet Heng will lead the ticketing and registration. We will have an auditorium seating plan. Ticketing will start soon and there will only be fixed sitting. As many of you would have known, Janet is meticulous with registration; and she thoroughly enjoys this role.

    5. Performers:
This concert focuses on singing/songs, not dancing or music. However dancing and music would be added as part of the performance. All our performers have proven to be great entertainers; and I am sure they will be a delight to our parents, friends and fellow SHCians.

Our concert will focus on songs whih are popular, known, and in line with the 60’s and 70’s period. Each performance is limited to one song. The program choreographer may allow a second song, if the song fits the program. All songs can be in English, Chinese or any language or dialect. All performers may come in as an individual, pair or as a group. Again, the focus must be on the song and singing. The final decision rests with the program choreographer.

There is no band. There will be no screen, TV, scripts or prompting. All songs are to be pre-recorded on CD and will have to be given to the program choreographer.

We will be advising soon the dates of the submissions and rehearsals. Dec 5 is targetted to be the date for the final selection of the performance.

There will be dates for auditions and practices. In the meantime, the performers will be preparing a short description of what they would be singing or performing on stage.

I am looking for urshers to help with registration on that day. If you have the energy, I hope to see your raised hands. Make sure you can read A-Z and 1-0. Haha, plus walk and climb when the lights are off.

And, not finally, I am also looking for stage decorators. If you like stage decor, even if you dont have the experience, please raise your hands.

    Terence Seah

  42. Hi Terence,

I’ll be more than happy to help
out towards the success of the event.

Just holler when you need a extra
pair of hands or legs on stage decor or
    ushering.

    Cheers,
    Constance

  48. We are getting closer to our Stars-in-Concert, in January 2009. Last Friday, the Stars-in-Concert team met at the Serangoon Gardens Country Club Auditorium. The team looked at almost every corner of the auditorium, from the audio room which is above and behind the seating area, to the toilets, the entrance and exit, and to the stage.

One new addition to the organising team – Karen Thio and June Tan. They are in charge of stage and auditorium decor.

Our singers and performers have been busy selecting and preparing their song items. We look forward to your support during this concert.

  49. Last night, we had the audition for Stars-in-Concert. The organiser team was pleasantly surprised that the audition turned out well. Of course, there were some hiccups, mainly with getting the music formats right. Our music manager Ronald Lee and Program Choreographer Lily Ho confidently went through the audition at the Serangooon Garden Country Club auditorium; and finally we can say Stars-in-Concert is now closer to our dream.

Good selection of songs, wont tell too much, but can only share with you that the SilverHairsClub has indeed many singing stars.

Karen Thio came, and reviewed the stage and background. Still in the process of design, Karen is working many hours to stitch the decors for the backdrops. Last night, she helped to queue the singers and performers. Our Molly Chua was the best contact we had with the Serangoon Garden Country Club. She was able to cordinate with the SGCC staff, persuade the club to offer us a light finger food menu and the use of the auditorium for audition and rehearsal.

Our compere Thomas Loh was fun, getting to know the participants, and preparing for what could go wrong during the concert. Both Catherine Yeo and Thomas are co-comperes. You should see Thomas, as he participates with one of the singers.

For our singers, this event is different. They get to enjoy singing live on stage, without script and in full view of a 200 person auditorium.

Some of you may have heard me say, that we want to make SHC activities fun. We strive hard to make it a success; but a little disorganisation is good for us. So, come along and enjoy the hiccups. Do book the seats for your family and friends soon.

Now, as for dress. I think it would be nice to dress up nicely for our concert. For ladies, a nice crimson lipstick, trimmed eye lashes, some patches of blonde SilverHairs and a broach on the dress would be fabulous. For men, a pair of black pants, pink socks, a colour batik shirt and some wet-look gel on the hairs would make the evening concert an evening to remember.

And, finally, bring your name tag. It’s the SHC way to get to know one another better. Also, for the photographs.
