SHC key convenors – Did the concept work?

Sometime ago, we started with the concept of key convenors.  The intention then was to see if these leaders could draw out more members into its activities.  This convenor concept had been proposed by members, and we had given it a go.  It was also intended as a means where members can contact the convenors.

Well, let’s listen to the convenors and hear what they have to say.

  • Walking activities – Charles Wee
  • Cycling activities – Yew Kwong
  • Dancing activities – Dan Huang, Lily Ho, Dolly Lim, Jeffrey Gan
  • Scuba diving activities – Jeffrey Lim
  • Civic activities – Jassmine Teo
  • Dating activities – Susan Chan
  • Johore Bahru – Daniel Kang
  • Johore Bahru & JB Orphanages – Sam Goh
  • Yunnan – Feztus Lim
  • Indonesia – Abel Tan
  • Thailand – Terence Seah
  • SHC match maker (Group 1 members joining SHC in Oct 2010) – Sam Goh
  • SHC match maker (Group 2 members joining SHC in Sep 2010) – Frisna Tan
  • SHC match maker (Group 3 members joining SHC in Aug 2010) – Richard Wong
  • SHC match maker (Group 4 members joining SHC in Jul 2010)  – Margaret Tian
  • SHC Business Network – Jeffrey Lim, Susan Chan

Convenors, please feel comfortable to give your feedback.

I request members to give opportunity to the convenors to voice their views.  We should respect their views and feedback, even if if you feel you could do a better job or have a better idea.

  1. The concept of identifying a single Convenor for an activity is good for a start.. But to sustain the momentum, the Convenor should try to identify at an early stage those participating members who are willing to lead and organize… even if it is only for a period of time. To keep the activity going, renewal of the organizing team is a must and new team members should be given ample opportunities to organize events to sustain their interests.
Although I initiated the monthly walking event, Christina Chan is really the main driver nowadays. She in turn had recruited several other walk participants into the team and is still on the lookout for new ones as normal attrition will inevitably happen over time.

  2. Hi Charles,
Thank you for the feedback. Yes, you, ChristinaC and your team have done very well to sustain the walking room. I do agree the strategy has worked well.

Yes, we can eagerly awake the feedback from the other convenors.

  4. This topic on feedback from the convenors puzzles me. We don’t get to hear from the convenors, except from CharlesW and ChristinaC. We don’t hear from members too, The idea of getting some feedback from convenors and members is to see how we can have better attractions to members.

On this forum, many members have offered thanks to the organisers, EOs and ECs. Give the number of thanks a count, and you will be surprised they form a substantial part of this forum. But, yet few members put up their hands or voluntarily organise activities for fellow members.

Sometimes, I see senior members and new ones too, at certain events, but I will not see them organise an event for the group. Can you help me and other EOs understand why this happens?

SilverHairsClub works based on the concept that every member organises ONE activity and acts as EO during the life of his/her membership. I hope to encourage members to enjoy the activities organised by members like Dan, Dolly, Sam, Jacqueline, Yew Kwong, Ah Nee, Lily, Karen, BoonLiang, KingSeng, Serene, Conrad, Tian Soo, SueChan, Fetzus, Jeffrey and many more.

Perhaps, in our Singapore society, most seniors have still to work, so got no time. Is it because organisers don’t get paid, and instead get to receive headaches organising events for other SilverHairsClub members. Or is it because some of us are shy and rather stay in the background.

I am afraid if this is the meaning of status quo, we may not have new events or new ideas. The regular EOs may also be stressed out.

I hope you can look around your other SHC friends, and ask them to be an EO for just one activity during their membership term. Everyone has some experience, hobbies and interests. Do make an effort to share with others. It is nice to enjoy what others have organised for us, but do a share for others too.

A thought on one Saturday. Actually, this has been a long concern of mine for a long time.

  5. Most online forums/clubs have incentive to motivate or even ‘pressurized’ members to contribute toward the forums/clubs.

Maybe you can copy or even improve on it. Most people like to be acknowledge/appreciate after they have contribute to a certain cause. However most of them would not admit it but it does make them feel good especially it is announce to the community. They have a certain status.

Whenever they make a posting or contribution to the clubs/forums they are appreciated by the community/members in the form of points or ranks/reputations in the forum/clubs. This not only encourage/pressurize members to continue to contribute/share to the forums/clubs. For those with low points/reputation it may ‘pressurize’ them to find ways and mean to contribute to the clubs in order to keep up with their peers.

Here is an example of points/ranks/reputation in some forums – powerfullistbuilder.com/shc/1.jpg

This is just my one cent worth of opinion. It may or may not work here since people with silver hairs tend to have thicker skins. lol

  6. To me, the term “convenor” is a misnomer.

The people who are named in this thread are event/activity organisers (“EOs”). Not convenors?

If at all a convenor exists, he is the one who arranges and convenes meetings for these EOs to meet to?for example, work out the event calendar for the year so that no 2 events will clash, and together also other issues not limited to logistics, feasibility and maximise resources………

Be that as it may, the EOs have all done well, thank you and kudos from me.

Again, to me, EOs need a certain temperament which i find myself lacking.

He/She is very patient, with a nimble mind to react swiftly and correctly in a situation which suddenly turns sour, has to have a high tolerance for people suddenly going berserk. Under these criteria i set for a EO, I will never qualify but will try to make it up by helping out in the activity I participate.

Insofar as the suggestion of earning points or credits to get a status or reputation is concerned, I demur.

SHC is liked becos it treats everyone equal whether or not the member was a Chairman/CEO of a $100m company or was a key member of the Black & White Minstrels.

With the passion and the love for an activity – sometimes it is a hobby e.g. origami he wants to share – or he writes to share a message, it’s all of his own initiative. No compulsion. No carrot, which is for bunnies, and no stick which is for walking.

Not least, whether a person has a good reputation of not, it is from interaction with that person. Not from hearsay and certainly not from points he works hard to pile on himself.

    ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

  7. Hi Terence,

To keep you posted, the Dating Activity is still Active & Ongoing!

Activities for the singles are organized privately & on an ad-hoc basis. Given a declining ratio of male single members present at most functions, one may wonder if the group of singles are really that complacent with their current gallivanting lifestyle or perhaps pure ‘idleness’ to be on the look-out for companionship.

Armed with an objective to assist a group of female members to widen their circle of social contacts, I liaised with some private clubs & co-ordinate more activities for this group of people to meet & interact with each other. Confidently, the success rate is higher and there’s bound to have a couple successfully matched thru’ interaction of such social events held in the long run.

PRIVACY is observed and only registered members will be updated of such events~!

    Cheers!

  8. Hi SusanC #8,

Very nice of you to give an update on Dating activities. The idea of keeping this activity private is very appropriate. SHC activities generally do not attract enough single men to participate, so keeping the events small would enable the small groups to stay focused, and hopefully successful.

Again, thank you for being the Dating convenor.

  9. For the convenors, who have responded and given us an update on their feedback as a convenor, thank you. We shall just play by ear, depending on the degree of interest.

The convenor page will be removed.
