List of Registrants for Kelong Trip on 19 – 20 April 2008

Hi, Gang:

Apart from some former colleagues and pre-SHCian friends who have joined SHC, I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting any of you. I find it a little odd, being new to SHC and all, but I did agree to help Terence with the organisation of the Kelong Trip.  So here I am, you got me, for better or worse. :o)

I had a bit of bother compiling the list as not everyone registered on the same thread, and a few registered more than once on different threads. As far as I can make out from the two threads that I know of, the #33 people listed below have registered for the trip.

If I have inadvertently left anyone out, spelled your name wrongly (blame it on feeble eyesight) or there are others who have not yet done so but wish to register for the trip, please let me know as soon as you are able.

If there are more than 42 people wanting to go, we will have to work something out

Thanks and best regards,

Ron Koh

  1. Hi Ron,

Pls put Wendy Goh’s name in your list as her name does not appeared in the attendees’ list.

    Thks, Dennis

  2. Hi Ron,

You have left out my name. Pls refer to #54 of the thread which Gingko registered for me. Thks.

  3. Hi, Dennis: Re #3, my wife (Rosalind) has been in touch with Wendy regarding this. I couldn’t find her name registered anywhere. Have since included her in the list.

Hi, Dan: Re #4, have also included Chian Wah.

Hi, Veronique: Re #5, my apologies. Missed your name amidst the banter in Gingko’s comments :o).You’re now included.

Thanks, everyone. Please get your kakis who intend going to check the list and give me a nudge if I’ve gone awry anywhere.

    Cheers,

    Ron

  4. First & foremost, RonK, well done and you hv done very well. Nothing at all to suggest that you’re a newbie. On the contrary, the confidence you show is sky high….if you need some help here & there, do buzz me.

Yes, the coast is clear for me now.

  5. Hi, Tim:

Re #7, thanks for your comments and offer to help. I am still feeling my way around, not at all feeling as confident as I may seem.

Will most probably need to your help, but I won’t buzz you – I’ll holler. :o)

  6. Hi Ron Koh

From one Ron to another Ron, am Ronlai, as Terence had passed the baton to you, and we are yet to meet, maybe in the middle of the South China seas, so it will be good if you will register Alice Lai and myself Ronlai, together with two other Silverhairs, namely Alan Bock and his spouse Ann Chew for the kelong trip.

    Be seeing you…..

    Ronlai

  7. One Ron replying to another Ron Re #12: Done, and be seeing you!

41 people have registered for the trip so far. Looks like we may need to find a solution if this keeps up and we exceed the 42 passenger capacity of the bus; e.g. get a second bus, use some personal transport, get some to practice early for the marathon next year, draw straws, tikam-tikam, chiam chiam pas, etc.

    Ron

  8. Ron, please register me. My name is Vincent Wong; my nick is vincewong.
We should book the whole kelong and do something similar!!

    Vincent

  9. Ron Koh

Pls include Gwyneth Lee and myself. However, both of us are tentative subject to leave approval.

    Thks
    Eliza

  10. Well, if mohd refuses to go to the mountain, bring the mountain to mhd. Likewise, if all 4000 SHCians were to go, the kelong will become kosong as it sinks into the sea.

There’s still time to build our own steel-stilted kelong next to the merlion b4 end April and help to boom boom the booming construction industry.

VinceW to RonK “We should book the whole kelong and do something similar!!”. An offer fr 1 guy to another guy to do smthg similar………..heeeee, can I miss that kind of a chance to do the similar thing, and in a kelong?

    Wa lai liao………………..

  11. Vince (#14) & Tim (#16):

What, am I supposed to play Phua Chu Kang now? :o)

By the way Vince, thanks for the link to fishing kakis. Great photos – especially of the pair of dirty legs. Hope we will have as good a time as those guys in the photos.

    Ron

  12. Hi Ron

Since you hv reached above 42 pax, cud you tentatively put my name down at #45 and will find my way up to the kelong to meet you guys there IF I am going later… as wud prefer driving in.

    Cheerio
    Suzhang

  13. Hi, Suzhang (#19):

Okay, will do. There are a few other tentative registrants, but if we eventually end up with more wanting to go than a bus can accommodate, will you be in a position to ‘tumpang’ a couple of SHCians more?

Just checking on alternative transportation available.

    Ron

  14. Ron, much as I like to but unfortunately, I am not the driver…. am waiting to see if my hubby is available to go with me…. if not, I won’t go too… so at this point in time, can’t promise if I can tumpang anyone…we’ll see when nearer the date.

  15. Tim @ #16

Get a floating wooden platform instead. Much cheaper than steel kelong structures and pilings. Move it around and change your scenery. Choose a nice sheltered area to moor.

Still feeling sea sick? No problem. Get a water bed.

  16. Hi Ron Koh

You have left out my registration under Terence’s postings – April 2008 Fishing Time, comments #79.

    Rene Leong

  17. Rene (#23):

My apologies: your registration has been included.

I read your comments at #79 of Terence’s post earlier, and thought you were just seeking clarification regarding the date of the kelong trip.

You did state then that you were ‘marking your calendar’. To me at that time, this was quite different from saying you want to be included in the trip if it was in April.

    Cheers,

    Ron

  18. Roh Koh,

Sori, I didn’t make myself clear to your understanding.

Thank you for updating my registration

    Rene

  19. Hello Ron Koh,

Plse register me this Kelong trip. ThankYou.
Can I submit payment via your DBS ATM account.

  20. Hi, S K:

    You have been registered.

Will let everyone know when we are ready to collect payments, after we have firmed up the details with representatives of the kelong.

    Thanks,

    Ron

  21. Hi Ron,

Pl include me for the kelong trip. We discussed this during the monthly gathering today and I think it is quite interesting.

    Best regards,
    Andrew Koh

  22. Hi, Everyone:

Just a short note to keep you in the loop: Terence and I were supposed to meet representatives of the kelong today, to get a better understanding of the facilities at the kelong and what we can expect during this trip.

Unfortunately, the representatives were not able to meet us today. We will probably be in a better position – hopefully – to provide you with the information many of you are wondering about during the following week or so.

It was nice meeting some of you at Han’s today. I couldn’t stay long, but I did enjoy myself.

    Ron

  23. Hi Ron,
My wife ( Sally ) and I wish to register for this trip. Looking forward to the trip and the opportunity to meet more friends.
    Rgds.
    Jimmy Chew

  24. Hi Ron,
Do register the below paxs for the kelong trip. The names are :

    1. Pearlynn Tan
    2. Wana Tay
    3. Catherine Chan
    4. Jennifer Ong

    Rgds

  25. Hi, Eyvonne (#40):

I am taking care of the registration for the kelong trip for Terence.

Your name has already been included in the registration list for the kelong trip (at no. 24 of my post at the top of the page), based on the two similar requests you made in ID 869 and 1315 in December.

Unless, of course, there is more than one Eyvonne Chew in SHC, as there are at least two Christina Chans and Rosalind Kohs that I am aware of. :o)

    Thanks, Ron Koh

  26. Wow! So many kelong people. When I first saw this, I was very excited. Then, my head took over. I can’t swim and what if…

So all you folks, have fun!

  27. Joy #44:

I’m sure some of the people who are going don’t know how to swim. Don’t be so pessimistic – your chances of falling in the water are very low, and I’m sure there are enough able-bodies SHCians who can fish you out.

Then again, your comment is number 44 (sei-sei = die die in Cantonese) – maybe we should just forget what I just wrote. :o)

    Ron Koh

  28. Ha ha Ron. So funny. How coincidental that my comment is number 44. Guess I better stay on land. Anyway, there are no mermans out at sea.

  29. Comment #47

Gd Question!!! 4 reason we know the mermaids hd gone out wif the se(a)men. Guess the only choice left is 4 the mermen 2 look 4 wo-men.

  30. Hey Andrew, women/men, but it is not merwomen. How come mermen?

What is the masculine of “maid” ah? I can’t find it in my “The New First Aid in English”. Remember this little blue cover book with a white cross that we studied for PSLE? I still have the book. Hee hee…

  31. Hi, all:

I sent an email to the management of Hotboys Kelong a few days ago, for clarification on some of the issues that a number of you are concerned with, and am waiting for their reply.

I will be in a better position to finalise arrangements and keep you updated on receipt of their reply.

Meanwhile, thanks for your patience, and hang in there!

    Ron Koh

  32. Dear Joy at#49

My old Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary at page 779 has mermaid, merman; plural – mermen.

I still remembered the basic The New First Aid in English and its suggested answers which I used to teach my children sometimes ago. An useful handy book.

    Hehe

  33. Hi Ron, recfmed my interest for the April Kelong trip -a little bit Kiasu ok? since 42 may be the cut-off target?

  34. Ooh Andrew. Ya, I just checked out the online encarta dictionary. Mermen is listed. Wow!

So what new word shall we learn today?

  35. So, Joy, incentives to go kelong with the discovery of mermen around and to learn about them.

  36. Ooh la la…very tempted to go now, but with Ron Koh’s comment at #45 about my comment at #44, I think I got a little superstitious. And with the recent news about the drowning of the school boy who is supposedly a swimmer, I think I shall do my swimming on a water bed.

  37. Let no superstitions mingle with great thoughts and action; just do it like Nike.

Mermen need mermaids, vice versa, otherwise dwindle in growth, beauty and development………

  38. Andrew and Joy,

It’s not superstitions or mermaids or mermen that is my concern. Safety is the top priority. I have been out to sea several times, in Krabi, Koh Samui, even in New Zealand.

Joy, you don’t really need to be a swimmer to go sailing. In the open seas, even the strongest swimmers can succumb.

The most important item is the life jacket. There should be more than enough, if not exactly enough to go round.

The life jacket has to be in good working condition and has to fit. If it’s too big, it can rise up and cause a person to choke as it anchors around the chin. Worse, a person could slip through and sink.

According to safety regulations,it also has to be worn the moment one steps onto the boat, but most people don’t bother, believing erroneously, that there will be time to put one on in an emergency.

Another concern of mine is overcrowding on the boat. It can affect the stability of the boat.

I know I will enjoy the kelong trip but I need assurance that the above are taken care of before I will commit myself. So Joy, I am just as concerned as you are. Do join in if our safety is taken care of, ok?

  39. Hey Ron Koh.
Are you the same Ron Koh who has offered to teach us origami? I’m confused.
Regarding the kelong, I hope my concern in #57 will be taken care of.
    Thanks.

  40. Dear Mary, Joy and Ron

Agree to ensure that they must have life jackets and common sense fundamentals: safety principles and practices.

About two months ago, five Singapore national paddlers drowned within less than 50 meters from the shore.

    Safety first.

    : )) Andrew

  41. Yo, kelong kakis –

Boon Liang @ #52: I have you down as no. 34 on my list. Unless something goes very wrong, your place is quite secure. The earlier limit was because the coach is able to take only 42 passengers (I believe the correct number is now 40 passengers, excluding one driver and one reserve driver). There are options to hire additional, smaller coaches. Some of you would prefer to drive up on your own, and some registrants may decide to forego the trip. As such nothing is really firm until the kelong management/owners provide the clarifications we are seeking.

    Mary Chan @ #57:

Your concerns with overcrowding on boats and availability of life jackets are noted, and will be raised with the owners of the kelong. At the moment, I am having difficulty getting answers for simple concerns like the type of ‘beds’ that are available, nature of toilet facilities, first aid kits, etc. If any of you have additional concerns, please let me know asap. If possible, we will meet up with the kelong management/owners to address the additional concerns.

    Mary Chan @ #58:

Yes, I am the same Ron Koh who does origami. How does kelong origami grab ya?! :o)

    Ron Koh

  42. Paddlers do drown in water so I prefer to do it above water….peddle my belief in fate, in karma.

Lifejackets wdnt hv saved those dragon boat rowers at cambodia bcos you cant surface thru concrete pontoon……………

Since I’ll be going, those who are afraid of drowning, fear not. Just hold on to me, any part of me, and you wont drown bcos I’ll leave it to fate. And I am not fated to drown or let someone holding me drowned.

But no guaranty that you wont be half drowned but fully bloated.

  43. Yes, those five paddlers were washed beneath the concrete pontoon and ………… .

In fact, the undercurrents pushed the other five paddlers and they struggled to the other end of the pontoon. Their life-jackets were “hindrances” to the five survivors during that circumstance.

Let common sense of safety and divinity/fate decide.

  44. Ron Koh,
I thought I was introduced to a Ron Koh at the SHC meeting at Han’s, but I can’t quite recall the face.
When I went into your origami website, the photo of you didn’t ring a bell. I thought the person I was introduced to that day appeared stouter and didn’t look like the one in the photo.
Well, now I know. It’s one and the same person, kelong-origami. What a combination, hahaha.

  45. Andrew Kuan @59
Yes u r rite..safety first,so be sure u sleep with yr life jacket..sori..juz kidding lah

I wish i cud join this trip..but as i say..saya takut the open sea.so u all hv fun, after this can follow us up to Chiangmai mountain ok…no more water around, only greeneries, good for the body & soul!

  46. Hi Ron Koh,

What about some form of insurance to ease those concerned minds. Not so much about having creepy crawlies on menu :-) Seriously.

P/S. I thought you look like a “Japanese Master” when I first browsed your origame site. So dignified…. is that really you?

  47. Gingko @ #65:

I have raised the issue of insurance with Terence. His considered opinion should be forthcoming.

Personally, I feel that the question of insurance should be left to each person. There may be some who feel they do not need or want insurance, and should not be made to pay for what they may not want/need. But that is just my two cents.

Yes, that old critter is me – about 10 kilos ago.

That photo was taken by a trigger-happy photographer during a video session for Animal Planet. I had to put on that silly long-sleeved T-shirt (swiped from my son) because they wanted to focus only on my hands against a black background.

    Ron Koh

  48. Dear Norlinda

The life jacket can be windbreaker during the chilly night. Just make sure no sleep-walking.

    Everything should be fine.

On insurance, let individuals decide for themselves what is best on personal basis, otherwise poor Ron has to handle a lot of incidentals.

  49. Thanks, Douglas @ #68:

I was planning to call that number as a last resort. Just called Zen today, and he gave me the answers to most of the concerns raised here. Will follow up with details on this thread soon.

    Ron Koh

  50. hi ron would like to be included in the trip if that is still possible.
i can be reached at 91078714.

    margie

  51. Hi Ron #60 – Guess my seat belt is fasten tight to the Kelong already. don’t rock the boat, hei Hei “Gong Xi Fa Cai”

  52. Hi, Alfred (#70), and Margie (#71):

I have included you in the list, and will try my best to accommodate you. We have 62 people on the list as of today (5 Feb), so it appears that some alternative transport arrangements will have to be made.

    Boon Liang (#72):

Remember what happen to the poor slaves who were chained to their seats on Roman galleys that were rammed during their wars? Trust me, you don’t want a seat belt on boats to the kelong – you will want a life jacket! :o)

    Cheers,

    Ron
